In my first foray back into 40k for some time, I've decided to go for a long planned project, a genestealer cult. This particular cult has corrupted a Forge Temple, so lots of bio-mechanical goodness. Think Giger and you're there.
I'm trying to combine visual traits from the mechanicus with obvious cues from genestealer infestation. Here's my initial sketch for a brood brother/skitarii.
My first unit is a squad of hybrids led by a neophyte. The test model is a 2nd generation ymgarl hybrid. Here he is before priming:
And finished. The basing is ruined urban, pretty neutral so as not to clash with the colour scheme.

Interesting take on the theme 8)
It'll be good to see what you come up with :)
(coven limousine by any chance? ;))
cheers
James
-
Wow that guy looks fantastic!! :o
Hope to create something like that myself one time...
-
Cheers.
coven limousine by any chance?
You know it.
-
You know it.
Good man :D
cheers
James
-
Yup, just what every cult needs; a flash motor to get around in. ;)
Lovely work and an interesting take on the theme. :D
-
Wow. I'll be watching! :-*
-
Indeed. Most impressive. :)
-
I've got a cult on my 'to do' shelf so I'll be watching this for ideas to steal :D
-
Thanks all. I'm building the next four hybrids now, including the first of the larger hybrids. I'm using these as special and heavy weapon carriers as they'll stand out some. After that another 5 hybrids and then the first Magos.
-
They could make a great start to a necramunda or some other such skirmish game.
-
Oh you bet. A Necromunda cult gang has been on my to do list for years.
-
Well if this is the standard (and based on your other work I know it is), then we're in for a great ride.
-
Great use of bitz! You will have a very unique and characterful army if the rest looks this good.
-
Very interesting!
I like what I see so far.
8) 8)
You have my attention now.
:D
-
Damnit Saturday, that one's nice! :-* Consider this project well and truly followed!
-
Very much looking forward to seeing this in action. I have a few dozen hybrids that I need to get painted. Really want to see where you get your limo from I'm already planning on stealing the idea :)
For brood brothers I bought some of these with bald heads and great coats https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2004599158/meridian-miniatures-steampunk-army
Hopefully they should fit the theme for me at least. Will you go down the cadian GW minis for brood brothers with some conversions to them?
-
Thanks all. As an army the cult throws up huge options for conversions, which is ma bag.

@Beefcake, I actually picked up some Meridean great coats myself for the same reason. I won't be using Cadians. As my cult is a corrupted mechanicus temple, they'll be more like skitarii. Like the chap in the centre and right here:

-
awesome and icky at the same time!
-
Its great to see this project get some honest-to-Hive-Mind, painted miniatures in hand traction. Its going to be a good one :)
Regarding limos, if you go for the full on luxury vehicle in spaace (rather than some sort of AdMech vehicle with limo pretensions) then the Marx Cars of the Future have long struck me as a good coven limo chassis.
Image borrowed from Emperor Penguin
Lots of people use them for Fallout tables and I think that they fit in a Mega City One environment too. I picked up a couple of sets for general civilian space cars (and a planned unit of future Ghostbusters) a few years ago and I can spare one or maybe two if you are interested. I can take a photo with some suitable weirdos alongside for scale later if you are.
they'll be more like skitarii.
I far prefer the High elf skirts on those guys to the Dark elf one on the hybrid, which I think is too immediately identifiable. The plain robe/skirts are more in keeping with what I see as apt for Mechanicus. I feel that I should say it now at this early stage rather than bring it up sixty miniatures later :)
-
Cheers, they do look good. With the ad mech thing though, I wonder how to keep things in theme. A tricked out limo is what I want, BUT, it has to fit into the mechanicus approach too. I fear industrial rather than sleek Jetsons style is the way I'll be going. It's a conundrum, and it's already giving me a headache. Cheers for the offer though, most generous, but I think I need to investigate further.
As to the robes, the high elf ones are less specific for sure, and I am going to use a bunch. A couple of people have mentioned they're not sure about the dark elf legs. I like it though, and went on anyway for this guy. This chap is a squad leader, maybe he'll fit in when the unit is done with his swanky boots and expensive skirt.
-
I think this might work. Just add different 40k bits to it, to make it more Grim Dark.
http://dreamforge-games.com/products/eisenkern-apc-1
-
It's got potential for sure. Maybe a little too sleek for my tastes, but it could be tarted up some.
-
It may be well worth looking through the Ramshackle catalogue as you can buy parts.
You should be able to make something suitable from that amount of bits.
;)

I picked up a couple of sets for general civilian space cars (and a planned unit of future Ghostbusters) a few years ago and I can spare one or maybe two if you are interested.
As he's not interested, can I wrest them from you? I've had an ebay search running for months trying to get some for my Genestealer cult.
-
I have a marx car and it looks great but I also thought (my historical war vehicle knowledge is very poor) that the armoured cards from Copplestone would fit with industrial Grim dark stuff really well. http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=VEH especially the very first on the list of vehicles.
-
The Marx cars are great, and I got them for the same mixed purposes as cheetor.
I would suggest Minarions' Spanish Civil War armoured truck:
a very nice kit, resin but done as if it were a plastic kit. And just right in scale.
-
I would suggest Minarions' Spanish Civil War armoured truck:
That does look just the ticket.
I would be tempted to lose the turret, but otherwise looks just like an armoured Limo.
8)
-
Great start! That Minarion car(with the right conversion) would look amazing! Just change the gun in the turret and loose the wheels for some sort of anti-grav units.
-
There are two turret options, and eliminating both only leaves a small hole easily filled. Grand model, that. In the limo version I'd keep the wheels and add a 6mm scale genestealer as a bonnet ornament :D
-
In other words, this:
Hey, genestealers may be disgusting alien bugs, but they've got good taste in music!
(And don't forget to add three texan scrunts to the cult)
-
I've seen the Minarions' Spanish Civil War armoured truck before, and noted it as a definite possibility.
In the limo version I'd keep the wheels and add a 6mm scale genestealer as a bonnet ornament
Genius.

Another hybrid finished. This time we're going old school. This is one of my favourite models from the Rogue Trader era. I didn't get this guy in a fortuitous ebay bid, no. He's been in my possession since he was first released. He's had to wait some decades, but here he is at last. Quite a fiddly model to paint, with a lot of recesses and awkward little details, but for all that a real joy to have finished.
I did agonise over what colour to paint his armour. Black, purple, red, all were considered. In the end, with the scheme I chose, a simple metallic seemed to work best. It also has the advantage of highlighting all the wonderful detail in the armour ribbing and various joints. I did paint the little backpack/powerpack on his back green, which I'm using on guns, satchels and so on as well.
Here he is with his new school brother. Now to give them someone to boss them around.
-
Nice work, mate.
One of my favourite models too.
:-* :-*
-
Love the skin tones 8)
cheers
James
-
Very nice!
-
WELL done :-*
I've many vintage genestealer cult miniatures too, one day I should decide to finally paint them.
-
Fantastic work.
-
Lovely. An iconic classic. It's nice to see that model in an original colour scheme too.
-
Splendour all over!
Have you considered using some of (or parts of) the Iron Brotherhood from Micro Arts?
http://shop.microartstudio.com/iron-brotherhood-c-36_43.html
-
This is very good.
And definately has my attention.
-
That does look just the ticket.
I would be tempted to lose the turret, but otherwise looks just like an armoured Limo.
8)
I have this for my Genestealer Cult (2 of them in fact). I too tossed the turret and will plan on building up crenelations around the top with a hatch and heavy lascannon with cultist gunner sticking out the hatch. The other will be buttoned up and more of a "limo" for the patriarch/magi.
It is just a tad smaller than I wanted, but will work on the tabletop.
-
Just won the magus for the seated patriarch on ebay. I've had the patriarch for a few years but never had the magus. Now I have the whole thing, woohoo. You're really getting me wanting to start painting my set too. Loving what you have done.
-
I love the fact hat the paint job seems to be retro AND modern at the same time, and as everybody else has already said, it helps if you have one of THE classic GW sculpts...
The new scratch build is nice, and again, painted superbly, but when put next to the original there is no contest for me!
-
Thanks for the feedback everyone, cheers!
Have you considered using some of (or parts of) the Iron Brotherhood from Micro Arts?
I looked at an obscene amount of miniature sites while looking for components. I did consider them, and they may yet appear among the Contagii. (Who knew there was already a term for genestealer infected adeptus mechanicus?)
The new scratch build is nice, and again, painted superbly, but when put next to the original there is no contest for me!
Hard to compete with Jes Goodwin! I do like the way the converted hybrids are going though. They should mix reasonably well with the old Goodwin and Olley sculpts.

The first magos is finished. He was a very satisfying miniature to rescue from the brink of destruction and return to the cabinet converted up and with a shiny new paint job. He takes to the part of magos very well I think, especially with the addition of some cables and his floating pal. He really needs a couple of servitors though, I am thinking.
Here's the cult so far. Small, but growing...
-
Good choice, lovely conversion and some nice paintwork.
Love that vibrant red.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Wow. Nice project. Nice mix of old and new. Also that Chaos Champ Magos conversion is inspired. :D
-
I remember that mini. I may even have it, somewhere... o_o
Big fan of your use of vibrant colours on those minis. This cult is going to stand out like a bleeding wound when 'coming out' in the middle of an urban environment! 'Here we are, watch and despair!'
-
Thanks folks.
This cult is going to stand out like a bleeding wound when 'coming out' in the middle of an urban environment!
I am digging on the red right now. The scheme is starting to come together I think. Three models is about the minimum to start to see if it's working over a group. So far so good.
-
After a bit of a hobby break, the next hybrid is done. With more mechanical alterations than the others, he's going to have issues with shoelaces.

I'd be more concerned about reloading that autocannon if I was him ;D
-
Or wiping his bum.
-
Or wiping his bum.
lol lol lol
-
Guess that's why he looks so angry (great painting by the way). Guess he needs a loader/assistant now.
-
It's not all sunshine and roses in the army of the allfather. A life without hands would make anyone cranky.
-
Heh, he's lucky. Try shopping for a nice shirt when you've got three arms! :D
You're doing a terrible thing, you know? I'm getting close to wiping my noble space hulk cleansing astartes off my painting table to make room for some evil alien hybrid monstrosities...
You nasty man, inspiring me like that! lol
(Lovely conversion and paintjob, by the way!)
-
Excellent. More recruits for the cause.
I'm doing more aberrant hybrids next. I'm guessing not all human/stealer mixes work out, and these wretches are put to whatever uses suit. Hence this unfortunate. He needs a lot of work, pipes, cybernetic do-das and such, but he'll come out much like this.
-
Nice. The KOW Troll body suits really well. Can't wait to see this one with paint on.
-
After spending a long damn time on my painting table, the heavy weapon hybrid is done, and he brings the hybrid squad up to half strength.

cheers
James
-
Love that ugly bastard!
Great vision.
:-* :-*
The group shot looks great too.
8)
-
So many nice details.
Is "Bog Pools" from the Warhammer project?
-
Genestealer cults were one of the coolest GW things, too bad they don't support them anymore.
Yours is fantastic!
-
Great to see this project chugging along. That is a truly horrifying group of minis you've got there.
-
Nice work :)
-
Great work. Love the blue liquid container at the top.
-
Thanks folks, he was a lot of fun to do, the big weirdo.
The bog pools are part of a terrain set for my fimir. I only have 6 more to paint...
-
Freakishly awesome.
-
Not bad at all Dave! :D
-
very inspeiering
i will call your boss and tell him that you have better things to do than work!
So you can paint more and show it to us
-
I love that!
-
Thanks all.
After a hideously long time on my painting desk, the next hybrid is done. A meltagun toting 2nd generation, or brother Char to his fellows. The base model is a Mantic Games Plague model from Deadzone. I added a masked head to give him a little adeptus mechanicus feel. The gun arm took some work, a I had to change the position to lower the weapon so I could add the strap to give it some weight. A little greenstuff, an extra arm and some talos bits for stim injectors and there he is.
-
Lovely - but you don't need to hide the detail with a small picture.
-
Is it too small? Sh*te! I must take another.
-
It's as wide as your other ones - but I want to see the detail as on the heavy weapon hybrid at the top of page 5.
-
Really like this project a lot. Great combination of old miniatures, conversions, and new twists and concepts on an old theme. Great work all around.
I had never considered one of those SCW armored cars for a coven limo. Excellent idea.
-
Honestly, I was a little sceptical of the plans for these initially Mr S. As it was you putting them together I knew that they would be lovingly converted and painted of course, but not whether I would warm to this particular take on the cult. They are growing on me steadily though.
As the group comes together they are getting a little more Cronenberg, a little more body horror and the bio-science gone mad aspect appeals to me. I like Giger as much as the next guy, but I think that your obviously mechanical, rather than biomechanical add-ons are a better choice here.
Good stuff Mr S. Give us more.
-
Thanks all. I'm loving this project, it's a chance to got nuts on aspects of sci-fi that really appeal to me, and finally give the cult a go, as I've been wanting to do one for years.
Honestly, I was a little sceptical of the plans for these initially Mr S.
I could tell, you had that look in your eye. ;) It's always a danger mashing two themes together. Oddly enough, these two meld most pleasingly.
As the group comes together they are getting a little more Cronenberg, a little more body horror and the bio-science gone mad aspect appeals to me.
The force changes a little with each model in the aesthetics I want to pronounce. I had very specific ideas on the structure of each type of hybrid, large and small initially. As bits accrue, you see things you like and so on, it leads you in it's own direction, and some ideas shrink and change, and it's best to roll with it. A little exaggeration and somewhat less subtlety suits minis at times, I think. Especially when you want two themes to be identifiable in one group of models.
I'm working on a Castellan class robot right now, to give the cult some oomph. In time he'll (and his robot brethren) will have a groovy controller magus, but one thing at a time!
-
The first off the assembly line is this venerable castellan. It's my favourite of the old robots, and was a real treat to paint. I've kept him in mechanicus colours, albeit somewhat tarnished and battle worn. I figure the cult isn't too big on keeping it's machines in parade condition when it's fighting for control of the cities.
-
Continuing on with the cult, I painted one of my all time favourite miniatures, the cult magus with scanner. He took some tracking down, but once I had this fellow it wasn't long before I had to paint him. As with many Olley sculpts he's a riot of gorgeous texture, and was a treat to paint. He painted up nicely in my adeptus mechanicus scheme.

-
Oh, sir, I hadn't commented for a while, but I am totally amazed by the work you are doing here!! Stunning, really stunning!
-
Lovely!
That Magus is one stunning figure wearing a worthy paintjob.
:-* :-*
I have a couple of the new FW robots and had not thought of adding them to a stealer coven.
Top idea.
8)
-
That Magus is great. The figure is full of character and you've really brought it to life with a superb paintjob.
-
Great painting and great pairing of miniatures.
I get a kick out of seeing miniatures associated in thematic ways that may not spring immediately to mind. This covers those bases admirably :)
-
I'd already spotted them in the AAR.
A lovely duo and excellently painted! :-*
-
That's great. The scanner combined with the robot is a nice touch.
-
That's great. The scanner combined with the robot is a nice touch.
Agreed. Lovely job and now we know Bob Olley invented the i-pad. :o
-
Excellent and inspired work. I particularly like the big fella.
-
Thanks Folks! Taking a little break from the cult now to do something more tripod-based. Who would've believed eh?
-
A new addition to the cult. This little treasure is not a conversion! He's from the Malignancy range from the new game Macrocosm (http://"http://www.macrocosm.co.uk/"). They are literally ideal for hybrids.
And for comparison...
They have about twenty sculpts for the range. Leaders, heavy weapons etc.
-
Awesome - I was wondering how they would look but based on your pic I will get some for sure. Nice paintjob too ;)
-
Lovely models, always a pleasure to see some oldies again :)
-
Thanks folks. Actually Demi, this guy is literally brand spanking new, only just released.
-
A lot of great stuff in this thread: I love the model choice, the concept, the colour scheme, the modeling, band the PJ is very well done!
This last model is wery fitting: as a cultist is really perfect. Very inspiring!
-
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hQ_oQDXVSPE/VgrzUBR4jpI/AAAAAAAADw4/Rtz4z4y64qI/s1600/GSC_05.jpg)
It's been a while since I added to the cult, but today brother Scrivello steps up. Scrivello is an apothecary of sorts, a loyal retainer to Magus Kurgan and an expert in human and genestealer physiology. He can sew wounds and repair organs that shouldn't even exist. He's also an expert mechanic, which is handy when you're a half-cyborg alien hybrid with a broken ankle. The adeptus mechanicus parts are from the kataphron servitor kit and the dark elf wrack kit, both conversion gold. I did replace the syringe needle with brass rod, I could see it snapping in his first game.
-

I like their stuff, reminds me of early 40k ,might have to buy some lol
-
Yeah. I spotted the macro cost stuff just recently. Very nice genstealer stuff.
New conversion looks great Mr S. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Wow! I love your take on Aenur!! :-* Magnificent, sir! I could swear this is an original mini, not a conversion :o
-
Thanks very much! He was a ton of fun to do.
-
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HeLjwpEsjEY/VjDuBbULxvI/AAAAAAAAD0A/Cae2CehpsYE/s1600/GSC_07.jpg)
Today sees a long overdue addition to the cult in the shape of brother Faust. He's a 2nd generation hybrid, and a big fellow at that. That's a ripper gun he's got there, so he'll operate as support for his smaller brethren. A fun model to paint, I do love the ribbed armour. Here he is with one of his smaller fellows.
There's probably some ogryn DNA is there somewhere. Heck, that's probably his granddads gun. I'm looking forward to getting some game time in with him. Praise the allfather!
-
Lovely. What's the base figure for Brother Faust or is it from scratch?
-
Cheers. He's from a private commission.
-
He's my favorite one so far!! :o
-
Cool! It reminds me strangely of a Bob Olley Scrunt, but at that size it can't be... can it?
-
Nope, he's no scrunt!
-
Wonderful! I guess we are soon treated with a group shot?
Aenur conversion is excellent! :-*
-
Cheers. He's from a private commission.
It'd fit in very well with the Microcosm range. Any chance of making them available?
-
Not up to me I'm afraid. OOP.
-
Really eye catching, bet he shocks a few opposition. lol
-
Brilliant!
Great painting, great sculpt and he fits in ever so well.
:-* 8) :-*
-
He's very nice.
-
Cults really taking shape, time to call in the order xenos.
-
This cult is getting cooler and cooler :-*
-
Cheers all. I've a few new hybrids and such I'm keen to finish off now I'm doing more stuff for the cult, gotta get this thing to a decent size for larger games.
-
Brilliant conversions, lovely painting - fantastic thread!
I've been eyeing the Microcosm range for a while - think you just tipped me over the edge...
-
Thanks Momotaro. The Macrcocosm range is great, and with the recent Kickstarter they'll be expanding quite a bit. The jetbike riding host (hybrid) is a must have for me. I also have some mounted hybrid torsos that'll work great for conversions, so jetbike mounted hybrids are not far off for the cult.
-
Fantastic painting! :D
