In typical Gamer fashion I have recently thrust aside numerous projects WIP in order to get my pulp air-force sorted PDQ. ;D Fortunately this project is based around a selection of ready to paint models so I should be returning to my usual routine of painting a never ending selection of 20mm WWII Soviet kit in short order... ::)
The plan is to mat spray and weather a couple of 1/48 scale diecast aircraft and give them some nice pilot figures. Also on the project pile there is a Dust Tactics 'Horten' which comes primed, ready to paint. Last of all, there is a Flying Wing 'ornament' from the Sky Captain film, which only requires a mount for a flying stand to make it ready for play.
First up, pilots
The superb Copplestone Castings half-figures by Will Hannah. These paint themselves. I should have let them... lol These two will pilot a 1/48 Boeing P-12E and a Hawker Fury, both from Hobby Master.
Some minor filing was needed to get a good fit in each cockpit and a spot of greenstuff will get them into the right position once everything is ready.

These two pilot the Dust Tactics Horten (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/dust-tactics/Fleds.jpg). Mostly hidden under a cockpit canopy, bright and colourful seems the best way to go.

Mr. Peabody, those are great pilots, looking forward to seeing them in their flying machines! :-*

What he said.
What are your thoughts on the Horten?
Its been on my want list for awhile, just waiting for funds.
-
That stuff is awesome Peabs! We'll keep you off the 20mil Soviet stuff yet!
-
Gents, thanks.... I still feel like I am just finding my feet with the 28's.
What are your thoughts on the Horten?
Really happy with it. Looks like it will be huge fun to fly about the table. Will likely only run it as a bomber though. Don't really like the big cannon.
-
So feeling a bit like Bader?,....looks like you've found your feet. :-*
-
Thanks Prof. Lets see how long I can stay on the 28mm hobby horse. It's more fun than I remember. :)
-
Ok, it's time to get airborne. Probably went overboard with the weathering. But the grubbier these diecasts got, the more I liked the look of them...
A coat of matte varnish and some simple weathering with oil paints for the Hawker Fury and the Boeing P-12E.
The pilots are mounted with a small blob of Milliput.
Start with a good sized lump and carefully push the half-figure down to the right height, then let it all set-up.
This diecast Fury starts out (http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/l.aspx?k=106572681) as a very plain model, but it doesn't take much to get it ready for the tabletop.
The P-12e is a cool looking aircraft.
Classic inter-war style.
Here is a 'before shot (http://www.aerodrome24.de/out/pictures/master/product/2/ha7902-1.jpg)' of this Boeing P-12E from Hobby Master.
The pilot figure that comes with the plane may be closer to scale, but the Copplestone half-figure brings the diecast to life...
There is a lot of detail and texture in the wings.
It's just waiting (http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss321/CruverCollecter/BoeingP-12E005.jpg) to be picked out.

Next up, the Horten...
-
These come prebuilt?
Oh dear, you just sang the siren song of mister lazy. Meaning me.
-
Outstanding! :-* :-*
Let's get those boys in the air. ;)
-
ACK! Forgot to mention adding the mounting for my flying stands... A short bit of 5/32" brass tubing is epoxied into the bottom of each fuselage, close to the centre of gravity / fulcrum.
These come prebuilt?

Yes indeed... Like all diecasts, you want to watch out for a decent price because these can be pricey, but they are ultimately worth the convenience of being almost table-ready.
Outstanding! :-* :-*
Let's get those boys in the air. ;)
Thanks Dave. Pulp Alley has me inspired to get stuff done. I tip my hat to you & to Mila.
-
Man, I can't wait till playtime!! You worked wonders with those! :-*
-
Don't forget this one from the same set. 1/48th.
-
Hello all
Mr. Peabody, that hawker Fury belongs to the Portuguese Air Force. :D
Very nice plains sir.
The weathering results very well and those pilots are a most.
Well done.
Cheers
Rui
-
some really intriguing and well painted pilots and aircraft :-*
-
Nice work on the die casts, the weathering really makes them pop. The pilot models that you're going to use in the Dust Horton - did they come with the model or did you get them somewhere else?
-
Ballardian, those are the pilots that come with the Horten.
One of the best things about the Dust models is that they come primed (in dark grey) and ready to paint. Even the canopy has already been masked and primed....
-
Fantastic! :-*
-
Excellent painting!
I am especially impressed with the weathering as thats what has me currently stumped on my rocket planes.
Thanks!
-
Very, very nice. Might there be an auto-gyro in the future?

Here is a link to a decent youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJH6LqczUK0) that introduces the techniques I'm using. You can jump ahead to 14:00 minutes and to 24:00 minutes to get right to the parts that cover the washes and streaking that I'm doing. Also, this short 2 part video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxwE4M5KLn0) by Scale Model Medic is priceless.
In the first video the chap demonstrates several AK Interactive products. You can save time and money using these. They are a great way to explore weathering techniques and you may never need anything more.
The second two-part tutorial uses artist's oil paints. When I want to put some effort into a piece, I'll make my own washes, filters and streaking effects using artist's oil paints. You get more control working this way but it costs a lot more to get set-up with a useful assortment of colours.
Always put a good acrylic gloss coat down before you start doing your pin-wash, and be ready follow up with a coat of satin or matte if you want to try out a filter or other technique.
However, I've found that weathering diecasts can be fast and easy. On the diecast cars I'm working on right now I decided to work right on top of the factory gloss coat and the results are great. I made sure to first test an inconspicuous area to make sure my solvent wouldn't eat away the finish or the paint. I'll spray on a matte coat before doing any other weathering, so the effects have some matrix to cling to.
I know that Mason does all his weathering with Acrylic products, so don't feel obliged to work with solvent based products. This is just what I know and I hope it gives you a useful starting point for that awesome rocket plane you built!
-
Very, very nice. Might there be an auto-gyro in the future?
Heh... Now I have the air-power bug, anything is possible. I'll admit that I am very drawn to the P-26 Peashooter that the Professor so graciously pointed out...
But, there is one* more aircraft on the bench yet to come. The Horten will shortly be getting some love.
*That is, if you don't count the two Rocket Bikes!
-
Thank you very much for the info regarding weathering!
....The Horten will shortly be getting some love....
I really look forward to this one!
-
I look forward to our combat while it rolls around to airstrip knocking stuff down! :D
-
Heh.... Taxi!
-
Ok, here comes the Horten.... I really like this model. It comes primed, ready to paint and is loaded with lovely details. I promised myself that this project would be about quick results, and not lingering over silly details, but man-o-man, could you ever spend some time profitably coaxing the potential out of this bird.
Base-coat, modulation and trim laid down.
The cockpit also got some basic detailing. A few details will be picked out and then on to the gloss-coat. Will see if I have any suitable decals hiding in the stash before I move on to the pin-wash...
-
Holy cow! Look at all those bombs! :o :o
-
Wow, thats looking nice.
I cant wait to see it finished and in action.
-

Heh... It also comes with a bad-ass cannon, but I think it looks over the top. But I'm painting it so I can use both load-outs.
Wow, thats looking nice.
I cant wait to see it finished and in action.
Soon, I hope!
-
Waitaminnit...This isn't going to be ready this weekend is it? Do I have to build an anti-aircraft battery?
-
Nice stuff Peabody! Love the weathering! Models look fab! lol
-
Thanks Shawn! This is definitely the year of Pulp for me it seems.
"Pulp Year" was supposed to be about three years ago, so I guess this is business as usual for most of us....
-
I thought Pulp Year was every four years...
-
That's looking really nice. Any plans for pilot/nose art? After getting a pack of their apes, I find the Dust Pelican is making romantic noses to my wallet...
-
Yes but Gary its a Pulp Leap year so ......
-

If you mean you buy something and then three years later maybe get around to painting it, yeah thats me too.

I buy for three years and paint on the forth. lol lol
-
Right, carrying on step-by-step... ;)
Pulled off all the masking tape, and was happy to see the trim & the bombs were looking good. Details were picked-out with Humbrol 27004 gunmetal (why don't I use this stuff more often?) and then buffed a wee bit to bring out the 'metal'. Then it was on to gloss & decals.

Pin-wash and weathering coming up after Gary42's weekend marathon gaming visit. ;D
-
Lookin slick. ;)
-
Really great job on all your planes
-
Yes but Gary its a Pulp Leap year so ......
This is where you bolt up from your chair, yelling "Jumpin' Jehoshaphat!", right?
-
Lovely job on the Dust Horton so far, you've sold me on the model (about which I was previously a bit iffy - I'd been trying to get my hands on one of Dragon's OOP Ho-229's, but as they seem to be mostly in the US the postage/import tax to the UK has so far stopped me).
There are a few things I plan to change - the vectored jets underneath for one, so will make some Harrier type nozzles which'll look better & the skids, which I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to replace with yet, but I think, (now I've seen your excellent example) that it'll work. Many thanks for the inspirational models - can't wait to see it finished!
-
Fantastic bits of aero-kit Thomas!! :o
The P12-E is a GREAT looking pulp plane indeed. Though $65 USD for a diecast seems a wee bit steep. But perhaps well worth the cost for it's look alone. :?
-Todd
-
Thanks Todd. :D
I got a lucky hit at Hobby Link Japan and only paid a fraction of that for my diecasts. $50.00 for both the Fury and the P12-E, including shipping.... To be honest I didn't realise at the time what a bargain they were; I get email from HLJ with sale notices and I bite if something looks good and if I have the spare change on hand.

Very happy to hear it sir. I think you will be impressed with the kit. Lots of potential for leisurely conversion and careful finishing.
-
The pics don't do it justice! It looks waaay better up close and personal!!

Well on gary's say-so, I'll have to plan an adventure downtown again and see these beauties close up. Like I really need an excuse to visit Thomas' place. ::)

Any time Todd, I know it's a trek across time and conflicting work schedules, but you have a standing reservation at this Chinatown joint. :D
-
All that gaming PLUS Dim Sum!!
-
Well thank you Mr Peabody. I appreciate that!
All that gaming PLUS Dim Sum!!
I know, right? Thomas has the perfect gaming locale. Slightly seedy, slightly exotic. Something for everyone. ;)
-Todd
-
Not surprised Tom ended up in Chinatown, Vancouver! We spent enough time eating there in high school! :P
-
So are we going to see a pulp aerial extravaganza at Trumpeter Salute 2015, sir?
Hope so!
-
That's how it's looking from here... I have a stash of vehicle kits to put together to add to the fun; trucks and sedans from Company B, Blue Moon and E-Bob.. ;D
I might go more 1950's sci-fi rather than pure 30's Pulp, but we'll see how the pieces fall into place.
Oh, the Horten is pretty much finished now. Just trying to make up my mind on some additional weathering, but I think I could call it a wrap at this point with no regrets.
Pictures coming up directly. ::)
-
50's sci-fi?? :o
-
I have just discovered this wonderful thread, Mr P, and have to say that there is some wonderful work going on here.
:-* :-*
This plane lark is obviously seriously addictive as I have just realised that I have spent the last half an hour looking at various options.
Dammit!
:o
I think that I will hooked if I dont leave quickly.
::) ::)
-
50's sci-fi?? :o
Yeah, who am I kidding!!! lol lol lol
I really liked what those U.S. WWWII troops added to our three-player game this last weekend... All the more reason to get that big stash of Pulp Figures USMC in tin hats & ranger hats painted up. A much more colourful faction for the game I would like to put on...
In any case we will just have to see what bits end up on the table on the day.
-

Call in the army to fight the alien invasion? :o
-
That's what I was telling you last week! 3 act campaigns! Meteor crash...Soldier gets infected... GIANT PLANT MONSTER!!!
The army is ALWAYS in those movies...Particularly the British Army. Those poor Cockney privates are always getting killed or transmuted or something!
-
USMC vs Radon Zombies for sure... But where?!
I have a sinister plan that should prove entertaining.
-
Sinister plan? You? Pfft... ;)
-
The Horten is finished. Suppose I should re-christen it now that the German livery has been painted over... ;)
This new version could be flown by any capable villain or hero willing to invest in advanced super-secret rocket-science aircraft.

Still not sure about the jet-exhaust effect. Maybe a dab of oil paint to tone it down...
As it stands the contrast is nice at three feet where it counts the most.
Pilots and cockpit detail manage to 'pop' out nicely through the canopy.

The fit of the main weapon might be a sore-point for some, but you really can't see how the bombs or the big-cannon are attached when the thing is on the table, so this is a minor detail.
I like that you get a choice of bombs or a big gun... o_o
(http://imageshack.com/a/img909/9113/hNdyuF.jpg)
This completes my 'Pulp Air Force' mini-project. The three birds have all been fun to get ready for the table-top, but this last one was the best. It really reminds me of seeing the Vulcan Bomber fly overhead at the local air-show when I was a kid. I thought that was the coolest thing ever...
-
(Stands up... Slowly claps... Whole room begins to clap... Standing ovation... Roaring and howling... Chairs and tables get thrown about.)
Man I cannot wait to shoot that thing outta the sky with my Rat Patrol .30 cals :P
-
Whoa!
That does look sweet!
:-* 8) :-*
-
:-* Holy crap that looks amazing! :-*
-
Sir P, that is some damn fine work! :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely work, have now succumbed & have started my own!
-
Best thing about this last bird was that it was 'paint & play'... After assembling a lot of 1/72 scale kits these last few years, this feels like cheating! lol
Don't know where on the scale that places weathering diecasts, but I think it must be a very good place indeed as it gets our friends gathered around the table to play that much sooner. :)
Lovely work, have now succumbed & have started my own!
Superb news! Looking forward to it!
Gary, Paul, Dave, Mila, thanks for your encouragement. I do love a bit of quality time with my old airbrush. :D :D :D
-
Peabody,
I went looking on ebay for those models. Did you really pay $40.00 + for each of them??
Nick
