Been hacking away and have now run out of usable bark. The hill that can hold a tower that was this:
(http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u26/scotsbrigade/photo4.jpg) (http://s164.photobucket.com/user/scotsbrigade/media/photo4.jpg.html)
has been worked up. Base size is 350mm x 250mm. Front:

With the tower on it’s 270mm high.
Need a new tower but here’s some 28mm Foundry to show scale:

With the tower off it’s 150mm high:

(http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u26/scotsbrigade/photo31.jpg) (http://s164.photobucket.com/user/scotsbrigade/media/photo31.jpg.html)
Have also made another 5 pieces of varying sizes and heights.
The light is not good so I’ll post better images of all of them when it perks up.
This one is a low rocky ridge 550mm x 310mm. Front:

Empress 28s for scale:

The sharp-eyed will see the damn mdf is warping a bit.
C’est la vie. Next time Marine Ply or thicker MDF.
Seems only to happen when the Recticel foam is not covering the majority of the MDF.
More later….

That looks the bees knees as do the rest of the rock seections. ;D :-*
My only comment would be the rectangluar bases on the rock formations makes them look quite regimented. Any reason why you didn't cut them with a more irregular shape?
-
Thanks.
Yes, I intend to build sections that butt up and are irregular shapes (that stick out into the table).
I may well (if I can get more bark) make some large ones up the way you suggest though....
-
Excellent stuff- I love the way you managed to get the bespoke aspect of the terrain to appear seamless 8) 8) 8)
Darrell.

hats off!!! :-* :-* :-*

Low ‘pass’.
Useful as an objective:

Tremendous :-* :-* :-* :-*
Don't mind the little bald fella - he rounds the corners on his scenery bases for some reason but we don't all have to follow suit ;)

lol
It wasn't meant as a criticism, just a question :)

Fantastic terrain!
I've tried using bark as well, but the layers have a tendency of peeling/falling off while in construction. Any tips on how to keep the bark in tack as you build?
-
Cheers Ray
Hot glue gun and work out where you can cut ledges to 'rest' sections on.
Mamalute: crit is welcome, no worries

Flattop hill. 550 x 310mm.

Some (very) old building for a hilltop village. I may well build a new village that fits on the top and/or a crag:

Large Hill.
550mm x 310mm x 160mm.
Thought I’d have a crack at doing pathways.
Probably do them windier next time…

That’s it for now. Might try and do a terrain group shot later.

Please do! :)
Brill terrain and it would be a pleasure to see it all together.
Darrell.
PS. Question for you on the SDF :)
-
Lovely. Really captures the NWF. ;)
Group shot if you get a chance would be wonderful.
-
Brilliant, love the look of your terrain, wish I had the imagination / skill to have constructed my own.
-
Hot glue gun
Thanks... but to be more specific, do you mean that you glue the edges together so the chip doesn't fall apart when you mount it?
BTW... if at the end of your project if you decide that after all that work you don't like it... please PM me and I'll give you my address. I'll happily take this terrain off your hands.
I'll even pay for the postage! ;)
-
That looks the business.
-
Sorry Ray, no the kind of bark chip I used means it's very solid.
Hardly any flaking,
I did think about washing the finished hill before painting with PVA but did not bother....which I may live to regret...
I'll let you know
-
Boy, you have some great looking terrain there.
Really like how you did the hill for the tower. Just super.
-
The large hill is my favourite. It really is a very effective technique. Well done sir :)
-
Wow... :-* :-*
Lovelly terrain and it suits several themes too.
Excelent work Smirnoff.

Hmmm....
I'll have to chat to the porter of our building and ask him to buy a better quality bark for the garden.
The stuff I stole he has is crap and flakes like crazy. ::)
Keep up the good work, mate. Your terrain is gorgeous.
-
Where doyou get the bark from ??
-
Great stuff 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Great work, I'd like to do something similar but then I'd just chuck it in a plastic box and it would get chipped to buggery lol.
-
Where doyou get the bark from ??
I got lucky and a wholesale garden supplier gave me bags of old samples of something called 'Spanish Bark'. Dense and hard stuff. No longer imported into the UK.
Garden centre bark I found too small and brittle.
There is something called Reptile Jumbo Bark chips but I cannot find them in UK (ordinary Reptile Bark chips are no use).
Thanks for the kind comments Gents.
-
That would look splendid with my NWF project ... [gnashes teeth!]
Lovely work Sir
-
Those hills are the bees knees and useful in so many arenas of war. Superb.

I know!! If only I could source the correct type of bark chip! I've been at it on and off all afternoon and come up empty handed! :'(
Darrell.

Few shots of the terrain lobbed together.
Must get a better camera than my phone.
Still….as the sun sets across the North West Frontier the Pathans gather for action…..

I take it all Back. The way the tiles join up is a triumph. I love it. :-*
-
That's a great set up :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Bloody lovely. :-*
-
Humph! :)
-
That is gorgeous work. I love the paintjob I really thought they were rocks and not tree bark at all. I am going to try and steal many of those ideas for my own NWF project. Inspirational stuff.
-
Lovely work Roger.
Do you think this stuff might be what everyone is looking for?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2L-Coarse-13-18mm-Pine-Orchid-Bark-Chips-Substrate-for-Mantis-Spiders-Plants-/261486363183?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects&hash=item3ce1cd422f
There are a few other suppliers of bark on there too.
-
Thanks Hobbit.
No it is too small '13-18mm'
There are sone 35-60mm bark bits available but some of the big bits I have used are 100-120mm
Smallest 30mm (ish) and all sizes in between
-
Wonderful build.
It all ties in well together.
-
Bleeding lovely!!! Can't wait to mow down some of the locals with the Gordon's and their chums :-* :-* :-*
-
Amazing!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Really Impressive :o :o I love how these all come together. I hope that there is more in the pipeline. Perhaps a series of sangars along a ridgeline?
LB
-
Thanks LB
It all depends if I can get more of the bark.....
-
Wow! I... Wha... Wow!
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
This is amazing stuff! I want to play on these! So bad!
-
I've noticed that the play area in a local park uses the larger sized chips but, of course, there's no telling how long it's been there. The only stuff I can find online is £150+ industrial size batches and there's still no guarantee that it is the right size.
-
Fantastic stuff, pm your address and we will send you a few of our Afghans FREE to help defend them. :)

Now, there is a kind offer I can't refuse.
PM sent.
-
11 very nice Afghan infantry turned up gratis today from Studio Miniatures.
I do not own any of their kit and these are really good sculpts.
Many thanks Stuart-H.
I'm off on the Mongol Rally end of next week so I won't have time to do them justice.
When (if) I'm back I will paint them up and take some pictures on the NWF terrain.
-
Glad they turned up, we look forward to seeing them securing the high ground :)
Stuart
-

-
Lordy, those look frigging fantastic!
