Hoy lads! would the new plastic universal carrier be usable in vbcw? when was the mark 1 made from? basically was it kicking about in 1938 or would I be better off getting some carden-lloyd tankettes instead?

According to the Osprey book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Carrier-1936-48-Story-Vanguard-ebook/dp/B007X3JV9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404892516&sr=8-1&keywords=universal+carrier) (kindle link), it was in service from 1936 to 1948, although some of the early versions looked slightly different

The 'Universal Carrier' was only introduced in 1940, but the Scout, Machinegun and Cavalry carriers came in around '36 iirc. These were similar but did not have the box body of the Universal. I believe that there weren't even any Universals in France in 1940, although I wouldn't be prepared to put money down to back that belief.
I think Army Group North make the Mk. Is, at least the first two types anyway.
The Carden-Loyd 'tankette' was used more as an infantry support weapons carrier than a scout vehicle, although it was used as such in the RTR for a time, alongside the Vickers Mediums up to around 1938 at the latest, although I expect most would have been retired by that point.

the Universal Carrier No. T8288 was captered by German Troops in may or june 1940, so some had been part of the BEF. A second one carry a no. 23 on its front, together with german soldiers in 1940. In 1928 the Italian army bought 4 Carden Lloyd MK VI, 1929 the army of Poland some and a licence for own use. 1934 bought the belgian army up to 300 Vickers Utility B Tractors, there had been big enough numbers of this little things to use them in 1936 or 1938 games.

The Vickers Utility Tractors were used extensively by the British Army in the pre-war period, that much I do know. Again they were used as weapons carriers and I did have a photo of one used on exercise, which mounted its Vickers Gun in a 'ready to fire' position to the rear of the driver (presumably fired by someone standing on the ground). British tractors did not have the 'armoured hood' of continental models, but otherwise looked the same.
