Title: Looking for Fantasy Naval rules
Post by: Lord GreyWolf on July 10, 2014, 12:03:47 AM
I have a number or fantasy style ships and looking for a basic rules set I can use the minis so my 6 year old son and I can do some navel battles.

Most of the ships I have are similar to the Bretonian ships from Man O war and the Nurgle fleet.

Any help in this would be great. I don't want to have to print off a bucket load of counters/templates/data sheets/rules etc just something that would be fun to play and quick.

Cheers

The old Pirates Constructable Card Game springs to mind, fast and easy to play, not sure where you'd get the cards from though. There may be an online community like there are for other defunct CCGs?

I have a bucket load of ships just need rules that are basic and not overly complicated. Most of I have found are a bit over the top for my boy to grasp. It needs to be a game that he can learn to play.

I have around 20+ ships.  Some have paddles, sails or oars ranging from small, medium to large scale ships.
Any ideas?

So, if it is man o war scale, you can try uncharted seas.  Its a pretty simple game which (unfortunately) never took off as well as Spartan Games' other offerings.  Not sure if its in print anymore, but you should be able to source the rules easily enough.

Haven't touched any Spartan games product due to a failed group order I did fell through and cost me $$$ in exchange rates when I had to refund everyone's money... ( left a sour taste)

I do have the uncharted seas rule book on PDF may take some time and have a read see if the lad can grasp it.

A couple of places to have a look at for you:

Strange Tydes http://www.blease.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/WG.strangetydes.html  (be warned the site dates back to 2002 in style and content but they are still around)

Pirates of Yendor http://www.jimwallman.org.uk/yendor/poy.htm (designed for a MEGAGAME - crawl around the floor having fun)

Flagship Games Pirate! http://www.flagshipgames.com/html/pirates.html (full set of rules and may well be to complex for an intro game)

You may also be able to adapt these http://theminiaturespage.com/workbench/83687/

Good luck and post a battle or two!

Simplified 'The Uncharted Seas' may work.

Begin with just the movement (including the turning arc templates), shooting and damage. If he gets that you can add wind, boarding actions and terrain. I don't think you need bother with the cards and other rules.

I think I may even have the turn templates some water that I had printed back when uncharted seas first came out. Will hunt through my stash and see if I still do.

The next thing is what races do I use a fleet of bretonian and nurgle ships in uncharted seas?

Imperial Navy for Bretonnian and Bone Griffons or Orc Raiders for Nurgle.

Also, you should be able to find uncharted seas product and rulebook either second hand or as a clearout from retailers for next to nothing.  The game never really took off, so it seems everyone is trying to liquidate stock.

I really liked the orc ships, and have a good amount, along with some other fleets.  The sculpts were nice and fun to paint.  The rules were pretty simple, so more to my liking.

I have a bucket load of ships so won't need to buy any more.
Down loaded the Uncharted rule book and I  have the turning templates .
I guess all i need to do is figure out what Uncharted seas ship best matches the man o war versions I have. I have all of the various Bretonian and Nurgle ships. (At least 9 of each ship type except for the chaos death galley which I have only 3) so any ideas?

If you go with Uncharted Seas you can download most of what you need:

http://www.spartangames.co.uk/resources/downloads

The templates etc are in the digital rulebook

Looks like I may have print off the tokens and templates the ones I have are not complete and extra types have been added sine I originally got them printed.

Will hunt out the ships I have and see exactly how many there are and types then need to sit down with the Uncharted Seas faction list to see what I can proxy from my minis so we can make up some fleets.

I shall be watching this place, as I just unearthed my Man'o'War stuff when going through some boxes in the garage last weekend...  :D

I found all of the ships last night.
1x daemon Plagueship
2x Plagueship
9x Plaguecrusher
3x Death Galley
1x Bane Tower of Tzeentch

2x Bretonnian Galleon
9x Bretonnian Corsair
12x Breton Ian Buccaner

Had to dust them all off. Fixed up a few sails and masts. Still quite a few that still need masts and sails made up.
Would love to play Man O War but the cost of getting the box set is horrendous.
Have down loaded a number of different fantasy naval games for me to read through.

Will update as I go.

I own the boxed set, AND the two smaller expansion boxes. Shall have to go through them to see if all the rules are still there (I had a bad habit of putting rules in magazine files, away from the boxes, back then).
