Title: Cthulhu beasties I've painted.(photos gone, don't bother)

That's a byakhee, this is a Mi Go:

I applied basic gem/glass theory to get the yellow translucent effect (and on the Polyp and Shoggoth). The trick is balancing the upside down dark to light highlighting and getting the spots of pure white in the right place.

That first post has so many things in it that are just amazing. The glowing yellow eyes...creepy and yet mesmerizing. A few of the photos don't even look like painted figures, they look like highly rendered paintings.

Way way WAY beyond my skill set. Top notch work!

Is Duff's work brush, air brush, both? Oils? Inks? Acrylics? What kind of primer? o_o

I havn't picked up a brush in over 20 years. *sigh* I must be insane....

Post by: Duff on January 16, 2015, 07:23:36 PM: The colours on the Cthulhu Wars pieces were chosen to match their "team" colour in the board game. Cthulhu is green, Nyarlathotep is blue, the byakhee belongs to the yellow team, the Formless Spawn to the orange team etc. Other than that, I just go with the colours I like. Even with historicals I never let accuracy get too much in the way of pretty colours.

They are all painted with brushes, and I do a zenithal prime with three coats of various Halfords spray primer.

Alfrik does inks and dry-brush. I have usually done wet on wet blending (but that was before I had ever seen dry-brushing- pre MR.Alfrik)

The customer wanted it to be the same as the first one I did but I went a bit heavier on the OSL this time.

I love all the eyes on Chaugnar Faugn, too. Making every one different really ups the otherworldly aspect of the figure.

This one is a plastic playing piece from the game rather than a resin model from Fenris. It is a lovely piece, but given the choice I prefer the crisp detail and ease of clean up of the resin.
