Title: Glorantha (photos all gone, don't bother)
Post by: Duff on July 13, 2014, 08:11:43 PM
To celebrate the soon to be delivered Guide to Glorantha, here's a showcase of everything Runequesty I've painted over the last few years, whether for myself or commissions.
Creatures first:

Fantastic stuff for my favourite fantasy world!

You've done an amazing job on all of them, but the beetle-blue/black carapace on the troll-scorpion hybrid (Gorakiki cultist?) is stunning.  Love the Fenris models - I have several of them in my painting queue and I can see them ALL being future purchases.  Your take on the Morokanth (tapir-men) is ace, and the Jack-o-bear and Walktapus.  The Rhino broo is superlative in a very understated way.

Who makes the Lunar figures?

Do tell about the Guide when it arrives - I foolishly skipped the Kickstarter, and £175 is looking a little steep

WOW...what a great collecting and what awesome painting on them  :-*

Great stuff, love them all.

Could you please tell me who makes the tentacled beast in the first pic, the Lunar guy with the 2 raised daggers/shortswords and the Orlanthi "Celtic" Warrior (between the on in green and the woman with the red cape/foot on the orc-head)?

Thanks for the kind comments.

The Walktapus is from Fenris Games (as are most of the beasties), the lunar is a Crusader Celt from the new release (available through Northstar) and the dual armed Storm Bull berserker is a Red Box Games body (from the first KS) with a Warlord Games plastic Celt head.

First one is a conversion, he's a Hasslefree roman hobbit with the head from the Mongoose duck set. The other two are both available from Fenris Games as they are.

Oh wow! :o
I really tried to like Glorantha, and believe me I really do, but when I started to collect the rpg, there was just way to much to find and read. A bit sad that I missed the kickstarter, but I hope to borrow a copy from a friend that ordered two...

Between Duff and the boys at Fenris, I'm being slowly dragged back into RQ, after nearly 25 years away! Still got all my old books, just couldn't bear to sell them off. If those new Trolls turn out as good as they look to be, I'll be back 100%!

Great painting! Glorantha does seem intimidating when you first start, but it is such a fascinating mythology and setting, discovering what it is all about is half the fun...

Love Glorantha but couldn't deal with the weird changes over the last 30 years.

Moon Design/Issaries Inc publishes reprints of the classic RQ2 supplements Pavis & Big Rubble, Borderlands, Griffin Mountain and a Cult Compendium (Cults of Prax/Cults of Terror).  Everything is polished and updated - Cults Compendium, for example, contains more additional religions.  Printed and PDF formats.

So you can play like it's 1983 all over again!  There's enough material in there to keep you going for years.

Design Mechanism, who make the rather splendid RuneQuest 6, are planning a Glorantha introductory supplement called Adventures in Glorantha.  Funnily enough...

And if you fancy trying RuneQuest 6 but don't want to pay £40 for it, the excellent RuneQuest Essentials is free on their website.  At 200 pages, it's as long as some older full versions of the game!

http://www.thedesignmechanism.com/resources/RuneQuest%20Essentials.pdf

Until Adventures in Glorantha comes out, fan-made RQ6 cult write ups can be found in their forums.

A lot of the Mongoose Glorantha material can be found cheap on EBay, DriveThruRPG, or under the Mongoose Legend imprint.  Legend is the immediate precursor to RQ6 - the authors were limited in their page count and RQ6 is what they WANTED to make.

There's at least two Mongoose books that cover Dragonewts in great detail, including PC character generation...

Oh wow! :o
I really tried to like Glorantha, and believe me I really do, but when I started to collect the rpg, there was just way to much to find and read. A bit sad that I missed the kickstarter, but I hope to borrow a copy from a friend that ordered two...

See my post above - get the free RQ Essentials, and then I'd go for the Moon Design Classics.  These really are the core of the setting, although focus has shifted from the Plains of Prax and Pavis to Sartar vs Lunars in the past decade or two ;)

A lot of the Mongoose (2000s) material is for 2nd Age Glorantha - basically the rise and catastrophic downfall of two over-mighty empires.

The Classic (80s) and Avalon Hill (90s) material is set in the 3rd age, and the most common setting sees the players either 1) in Dragon Pass witnessing or fighting in the Lunar Empire's invasion of Sartar, or 2) the nearby Plains of Prax and City of Pavis, as Sartarite exiles, Lunar invaders or general treasure-hunters and adventurers.

Lastly (!) the Issaries Heroquest material (early 2000s) is close to systemless and may be of general use to you as background.

Start there, then work your way out - there's a whole world to explore.

I never got into Runequest. That said I was always intrigued by the Ducks. I picked up only one RQ book, and that's the Mongoose Duck book. Your miniatres have me thinking about taking a closer look at Glorantha. After all, I need some way to use that box set of Mongoose Duck miniatures I picked up.

Oh, and the Walktopus. I need a Walktopus. Who couldn't love a Walktopus?   :D

The two Orlanthi are Tanatus Saxons,

and three of the Lunars are Agema Republican Romans, from their metal packs
http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=6326
http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=6325
There is a LE resin Dufficus from Fenris Games, the top half used on one of the pirates, the legs on a lunar:
http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGWC05-Roykius-Chunca-LE-resin/p/39242433/category=8977041
or there is a metal version without helmet which is a bit cheaper

The rest are kit bashed from various plastic kits (Warlord Zulus & Celts, Agema Velites) a head from Maxi Mini
http://maxmini.eu/conversion-bits/head-swaps/Tribe-Black-Lotus-heads-bits
and a torso and legs from the Red Box Games 1st kickstarter marauders (which I don't think are available anymore).

Spectacular! It's not just the painting (which is jaw-droppingly beautiful), it's the way that you've drawn miniatures from different ranges and have made them look like they are all part of the same world. I played Runequest fifteen or twenty years ago, and loved it - these wonderful miniatures are making me want to return to Glorantha! Superb.

A quick question - where does the first of the Wolf Pirates come from? (the one with the plumed helmet and breastplate?)

THIS.

Very much this.

These are almost entirely miniatures that I'd either never seen before, never seen painted, or conversions that I couldn't recognize where all the bits were from.

Stellar work!  WOW!  I love all of it!

Thanks for the kind comments guys, I love Glorantha and if anyone gets re-inspired to game there because of this thread I will be a very happy man.

A quick question - where does the first of the Wolf Pirates come from? (the one with the plumed helmet and breastplate?)

That fella is a chop shop special. The top half is from Fenris, with his pectoral plates shaved (you can see his legs used to make one of the Lunars):
http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGWC05-Roykius-Chunca-LE-resin/p/39242433/category=8977041 (http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGWC05-Roykius-Chunca-LE-resin/p/39242433/category=8977041)
There is also a metal version available without the helmet:
http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGWC04-Duffiokus-adventuring-tailor/p/36123869/category=8977041 (http://fenrisgames.com/shop#!/FGWC04-Duffiokus-adventuring-tailor/p/36123869/category=8977041)
While the bottom half is from the 1st Red Box Games Kickstarter resin marauder figures. They are now available from the shop in metal, which makes conversion a bit tougher, but by no means impossible.
http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=227 (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=227)

I'll be working on the Fenris stand all day at Salute, so if anyone has any questions about the conversions, painting, or just wants to say hello, do pop by. I think we are on the back wall near Hasslefree.

Thanks, Duff. I can see it clearly, now that you've pointed it out. That model is used here and there with different heads and/or weapons, or chopped in half, and it never really looks like the same model. I love the pose, and the armor - I think I'll be ordering four or five of them when (let's be honest here, it's when, not if) I start my Glorantha project.

Wonderful work on these. Beautiful stuff.

That figure's pose and weaponry was specifically designed to make customisation as easy as possible. Plus the model the figure is based on must have been a fine figure of a man, and devilishly handsome to boot. :)

[EDIT]: Crisis averted! I found him tucked away in an odd corner of the store. No need to worry. Nothing to see here. You can carry on with your business....

Unusually for me, I used metallics (nmm bronze is tough to weather and age). I used the two VGC bronze paints with a little gold for highlights, then weathered it with various pale greens, green inks and brown washes.

This entire thread brings a tear of nostalgia to this old 1st edition Runequest player and turns me green with envy at your painting and modeling skills, Sir! You've really captured the flavor and diversity of the world of Glorantha, and brilliantly so using so many cherry-picked historical ancients (which is what my old high school gang and I did with Ral Partha ancients figures in the '70s to get our characters!). Would that we had such impressive figures back in the day...

From one old fan of Glorantha to another, I salute you! Your work makes me want to pick up my brush and see what I can accomplish at least in building some Glorantha-themed skirmish warbands...8)

As soon as I got my copy of Frostgrave I knew I was going to use it for gaming in The Big Rubble. I'll be doing spell lists for the various cults at some point, but first I thought I'd post up the first couple of figures for my gang.

Great stuff, and wonderful painting!

As many of you Grognards doubtless already know, one of the first Glorantha-related products ever released was the boardgame "White Bear, Red Moon". We must've played that (and its sequel, Plains of Prax) and least 40 times back in the 70s, at the Iowa City Wargaming Federation.

Plains of Prax was the one that introduced the strangest bunch: tribes of impala riders, giraffe riders, even rhino riders. Not to mention the chaos snails, shamen and other oddities. We even made homebuilt rules to link the two maps, which did overlap on one corner, and made triangular map additions to help link the two.

These figures would look great on the battlefield, recreating some of the epic battles of "White Bear, Red Moon." Can't wait to see more.

Cheers,    --- Phil from France

I've always loved Glorantha--especially the strange creatures of that world: the elves as organic plant matter, the machine-like dwarfs, ducks (love 'em!), broos, waltapus, etc...You've done a beautiful job on your collection. Very inspiring!

Can't wait to see the whole entourage!

Plains of Prax was the one that introduced the strangest bunch: tribes of impala riders, giraffe riders, even rhino riders. Not to mention the chaos snails, shamen and other oddities.

Currently we are playing characters from the Impala riders' tribe in our RQ campaign whereas in the 80's when we started it was mostly Orlanthians. :)

Cracking figures! I played a game of WBRM with the pre Avalon Hill version. I did not have a clue, I think I was Sartar and with hindsight the Lunars were attacking Wintertop, the game pretty much ended when the Tarsh Exile player hit the Lunars with an earthquake......

I'm keen on Frostgrave but not on the setting so I'm thinking a a Big Rubble setting or a city sliding into a swamp a la Doomed Valyria in GOT

Bish Bosh? You madman! What are you saying?
Fantastic builds and conversions - just amazing. I spy some Warlord Celts under that lot, amongst other things.
Trying to work out where the hell you've stitched the parts together from is a fantastic challenge.
Superb craftsmanship, to say nothing of the painting, which is also superb.
I take my hat off to you Duff. You are a grand master.
The thief is my favourite. What a great use of one of those strange Warlord Celt poses. Brilliant.

Wonderful Broo! Such a great part of the Gloranthan/Runequest experience, and these are fantastic! Those shields! Those NMMs! But the best part - the faces! Heaps of character there - it's in the sculpts, but it takes a paintjob like this to find it and bring it out. Great stuff.

Those broo are really well painted, but they just seem too clean to me.  Broo and filth are two things that go together in my mind.  Then again, I suppose they could be Lunar auxiliary troops, and therefore been forcibly cleaned up by the public relations department as part of their "See, Chaos Is Your Friend" campaign.
