Title: A 20mm aka 1:72 Kraal
Post by: Faustnik on July 15, 2014, 07:42:03 PM
Lads,

Recently we started preparing some scenarios for Force on Force/AmbushAlley set in Africa, ranging from Border Wars, Portuguese Colonial Wars and Bush Wars, and for that I discover I need more terrain, namely some familiar homesteads, named Kraals

Technically speaking a Kraal is a round fence for cattle, but as most of the cattle fences, in Rhodesia, north of Mozambique and Zambia, are inside homesteads, themselves protected by palisades, they also receive the same designation.

Getting the S&S Modern African huts, which depict a more modern pattern than the Hovels ones, I started imagining the family homestead set in some unmentioned area of southern Africa.
And this what I’ve made:

S&S Huts, and a base in 3mm MDF – cut to size, already primed and sealed with gesso paint

More planning….

The cattle pen… the real Kraal

Crops walling done and painted…..  things started to look like they should be….

And the final product:

Now fill in with some animals (Preiser ready painted ones – sold as 1:72, but exactly the same ones as their 1:87 models), as I don’t have African cattle, I used the ones from Preiser, plus some Elhiem Africans, sculpted and painted by Nuno/Kingcarbine. Weaver baskets from Nikolai, ceramic vessels S&S adapted.

I agree, nice attention to detail. The weathering is also top notch.

That is great! :-* I've been looking to build something similar and this is a great guide. Guess I need to hit up the Japanese dollar store for some mats.
