I am going to paint Zulu, Mexicans and Texians in 2014.
Any Zulu army worth its salt would have a lot of figures. I don't like painting loads of similar figures.
So in order to have just a reasonable chance of completing some Zulu I have chosen to use the method described below.
Here is the first test Zulu:
I simply painted the entire figure with a gloss brown spray, blocked in the details and washed it with a black wash (Army Painter).
I then painted up the colours again.
I think the result is good. In fact better than hoped for. And within the realm of realism with regards to completing 64 of the blighters.

Very nice indeed, simple yet very effective. :)
I look forward to seeing more :)
-
the result is very convincing.
but - what do You mean by:
"I then painted up the colours again. "
everything but the skin colour? with the same colours as before?
-
That is a damn fine result.
:-* :-*
Seconded. :)
Awesome sauce :D
-
Great end result!
The sprayed "before" dude looks horrible though, so great thing that it works out in the end.

Yeah, well, thanks! Hardly a new approach, but I just found the results were good. :D

Thanks and so do I!
the result is very convincing.

Well, I suppose I mean 'highlighted all colours with the colours I used for blocking out before washing'. The skin colour was highlighted with Bloodtracker Brown (which seemed suitable).
I varnished it all with dull cote.
Seconded. :)
Awesome sauce :D
Cheerio!!
Great end result!

Yeah I was a bit afraid after looking at the sprayed ones iniatially. lol

The entry for August - a twelve man rifle group.
I will be using Triumph and Tragedy for my games of Zulu War and in these rules up to a quarter of the force is allowed to wield rifles. I thought it was a nice starting unit to make.
The rules also state that one unit must consist of at least 20 figures. Making this unit will be my aim for September. All other units can be between 12-20 figures. I think I will go for the lower figure in most cases.
I was surprised to learn from the leaflet in the Warlord Games box, that the zulu had organized their forces inspired by the British. Especially that shield designs were not random but rather uniform!

For such a simple technique they look the nuts mate 8) 8) 8)

Impressive, looking at the 'before' figure I'd not have thought you'd get such good results on the finished item.

this!

They do indeed look the danglies.
Nicely finished, sir.

Bloody marvelous looking poltroons! :-*
"The generality of Zulu warriors, however, would not have firearms – the arms of a coward, as they said, for they enable the poltroon to kill the brave without awaiting his attack."
The end result is amazing, gorgeous work. Yet I am quite sure if I were to try that, the end result wouldn't look half as good. So you must use some kind of magic :)

..... So you must use some kind of magic :)
Crazy Viking Magic!
:D

Very nice indeed :-)

Outrageous! :-*
Yes, you are correct about the shields. Wargames Factory has an excellent article on Zulu regiments and shields.
I've included the .pdf document for you to take a look at. Scroll down about mid way where they start describing the different regiments and you will see pictures of their shields.
Look at bottom of my post for .pdf attachment.

Thanks, well yeah I guess the Zulu army just takes well to this process due to the colours.

Hehe well, I had my doubts too!

the unmarried impi of Shaka Luwless. The world's population of marsupilami probably suffered a lot from making these.
And there we are... I need to paint another 16 of these to complete my army painter!

Top quality paint job there - very nice indeed

Wow :o That looks so damn good!

Excellent, I love seeing massed up Zulus.

Fantastic work mate 8) 8)

Thanks people! You spoil these figures with your kind words. It is actually still the very fast speed paint strategy (by my standards) that I laid out in the very beginning of this thread. lol

More great stuff :D

Amazing to see that such a simple painting method can yield such great results.
If ever I'm painting Zulu's then I'll have to remember it.

A little overdue but I have now finished 96 of these!
Still enjoying it all. I have promised myself not to buy neither Warlord nor Wargames Factory plastics again. The Warlord ones are actually decent, but I simply detest putting together plastics and having to scrape off mould lines... I find metal miniatures are less problematic with regards to this. So no more plastic Zulu for me. Unless the Perry's make some... then I will buy those.
So for the next 96 I will go for metal miniatures. There are plenty to choose from.

Great stuff mate and they look rather bloody en masse 8) 8) 8)
cheers

Impressive, love the ageing Indunas at the front. :-*

Thank you. Now I have time to get back to boot Hill figures. Haha.
No, I really ought to get this topic moved to the colonial board.

With results as good as this I have to ask, where did you get the brown gloss spray and which manufacture?
Darrell.
-
I believe it was a Plastikote brown standard spray. Nothing special.
-
Brilliant!
That is a most impressive sight, CV.
:-* :-*
-
Just amazing!
Thanks for sharing.
You have the skill I will always miss, painting lots of miniatures in a very fast time to a great standard.
Impressive.

A little overdue but I have now finished 96 of these!
So, you only have to do 3904 to get Rorke's drift. I think you can do it until the next tactica in February. ;)

I a aiming at a modest 400 though. It will be a couple of years yet.
I finally found out how to base it all so that is well.

Aha!
It is the 21108 chestnut brown.
About the tut - I will happily do so... Once I get some Zulu. I ran out.
But it was very simple. Block colours Armypainter Dark Tone and then colour again. Eyes, tongues etc ad libitum.

Great, i'll order some now.
I've pretty much got the rest down- had a little bit of painting experience :D
Darrell.

Just before I order, it was the Gloss, yeah?
Darrell.

I did indeed use gloss. I don't kow if it makes any difference. The thought was that the armypainter wash would flow in to the recesses more smoothly with gloss.
I hope you can make it work. There's no magic to it.
