Title: (Army Painters 2014) Darkest Africa Force Publique
Post by: Dr Mathias on July 31, 2014, 01:52:24 AM
Having decided to pursue the Army Painters challenge again this year, I settled on tackling some more Foundry Darkest Africa. I've had a box of Foundry Darkest Africa Force Publique going on twelve years now, so its high time they get painted. I did a unit of ten and some miscellaneous leaders and mutinous askaris about eight years ago, pretty much the same situation as with the British last year. The paint on the older figures is not great, they're kind of glossy and some have a case of the sealing 'frost' so I might strip them. We'll see.

The force should end up being four or five squads of ten, a bunch of leaders, and maybe some other ruffians and slaves. I may try to find a good machine gun if anyone knows of something suitable.

I feel a little dirty having collected these guys- considering how vile they were historically- but then again they're aren't many good guys in Darkest Africa. Press on!

First up for new painted figures is a squad of Askari and their white Lieutenant.

I also finished a station chief, with the rank markings of a capitaine-commandant. His eyes came out a little wild looking, but I think that's a requisite of many Congo Free State employees.

More to come :)

I was going to make a comment about this being a rather... fraught... choice of game. But that about summed it up.  lol

Nice painting! Agree with the blue looking great!

They look great, Matt! You should see if you can get an audio version of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" to listen to while painting. I just read this on my Vietnam trip this summer. Definitely some wild-eyed characters, there!

Thanks! I've read it twice, along with King Leopold's Ghost. Gruesome stuff. I'll try to find an audio version though- that's a good idea. It would be amazing to have some audio recordings of Livingstone, Burton, Stanley, etc. !

Thanks for all the comments gentlemen, appreciated.

I finally managed to finish basing last month's unit and send them into a village to plunder the goods of the inhabitants, who seem to have already fled the notorious Force Publique...

I painted up two white officers (one's actually a NCO). I like the unhinged looking chap with the sword and pistol quite a bit. I painted him a little more dingy than I normally do- I'm thinking he hasn't washed his shirt in a fortnight at the least.

This mutinous askari is also making his appearance in the Congo, along with his three plantain bunches.

Without a doubt. I made these over ten years ago- and the huts, colonial buildings, boats, etc. are all too clean and fresh. I wasn't weathering tanks at that point either :)
With so many half started projects I can't bring myself to revisit stuff that I labeled 'complete' :)

I plan to do a Belgian station house (and Azande huts when I get to them) which should be more realistically weathered.

no seriously, Your wonderfully realistic force publique really stand out against the huts. A bit of smudging ink at the bottom would probably do. The doors are amazing btw, did You have examples for them?

Splendid brushwork, I'm in awe.

Wonderful inspiration, thank you!!

I can only hope to emulate, & try'n get close!!

Love the mutinous Askari

Is Mister Askari Rebel a limited edition?  I saw his picture on the foundry site, with several other mutinous murdering scum dressed in the bloodstained clothes of the valiant men they'd butchered, but couldn't seem to find them for sale...

If anybody has any spares they'd care to make available....

I too would admire your door treatment files!!  My own huts cry out for something better than coloured glue soaked tissue...

Yes, they were offered as bonus figures if one bought a 'collection' of six packs.

It's a damn shame they aren't available, I have to say they are characterful, if only a ''British'' version where done, African tribesmen in oith helmets and tweed, a chieftain with a decorated elephant gun or a witch doctor packing a revolver.

It’s time for a long overdue update on the Force Publique project.

Now to business. First off is a squad of Force Publique askaris, being mustered and inspected by Lt. de Wouters.

Here is a second squad of ten on patrol, being led by de Wouters again.

Called ‘The Heron’ by his friends and his enemies, de Wouters was a tall man and habitually dressed in an all-white uniform. Despite being quite a target, his enemies were convinced that some sort of magic protected him from gunfire.

The Force Publique artillery crew find a clearing.

The Force Publique used a cannon to good effect at the battle of Redjaf in 1897. I believe it was a 75mm Krupp gun, which I acquired from Askari Miniatures. The crew are from the Foundry Mountain Gun pack, with some greenstuff additions so they matched their compatriots.

I painted several officers and NCOs. The first is a Copplestone Castings British naval officer with a slightly modified cap device.

I need to go back and give him a mustache, so he looks more like this guy:

The next fellow looks like he just got off the last steamer, a real ‘by the books’ sort of soldier. He’s about to get a rude awaking in the Free State.

The officer with a fez might be my favorite Darkest Africa figure, I’ve always liked this guy.

My faithful followers know that I like me ne’er-do-wells- and I’m sure he is one.

Speaking of miscreants, another mutinous askari joins the ranks of the rebels:

“But why would anyone rebel against the Free State?” one might ask. I give you Leon Rom’s garden.

This cultured gentleman was said to enjoy painting and collecting butterflies. Also, decorating his garden with severed human heads. It is commonly believed that Rom was the inspiration for the character Kurtz in Heart of Darkness. The fence is from Renedra, the foliage is Siflor and some random plastic plants. The heads are on separate bases just in case I want the garden for a less ominous setting.

Here are some pigs and sheep that I painted for the Dark Ages project I was on.

Apparently de Wouters really enjoys inspecting things. The sheep are formerly Mega Miniatures, the pigs are from Architects of war. I plan to gloss coat the bases so they look like they’re rooting in mud. The fencing is Renedra plastic wattle fence.

Last is a shot of most of the figures painted since the last update, traipsing through the jungle under the leadership of a mounted Commandant.

Thanks for looking, more to follow, hopefully in a month instead of two ;)

I'm prepping the last thirty or so figures for this force, so the end is in sight. Luckily I have the opposing 'Arabs' pretty much done except for some wangwana musketeers so I may even get to play a game! Then on to Baluchis or Azande, or maybe pygmies. I have a serious Darkest Africa addiction.

I've always had a fascination with that adaptation/novel use you can see when you mix modern concepts of warfare with primitive cultures.

Look at the cargo cults, great inspiration, warriors with clubs shaped like m1 carbines and air control towers made from wood and thatch with imitation radios and headphones carved from coconuts(forget the article it was on the bbc website).

Quick question, would the natal native contingent sprue's be useful for darkest africa?, bought a few on sale along with some british soldier sprue's to convert up  a little expedition.

Ona nother note the minsi are again topnotch, they will get much use once tomahawk games new Congo! miniature game is released.

Or, the reverse!!

I think we need some proper expertise in the form of Allan Quatermain. He may drag us into an unwanted civil war if we stumble upon a lost civilisation, but he's also the man you want around to get you out of such a scrape.

Fancied doing something a bit different to your average movie-inspired Quatermain, who usually looks like some sort of 20th Century Pulpish Big Game Hunter in a Safari suit Roger Moore would be proud of. Thought I'd go for something with a little more Victorian period flavour. So...

No.37 - Quatermain vs. Cetshwayo

"This is not your quarrel. You and your servant have horses. Slip out, if you will, and gallop hard to the lower drift. You may get away with your lives."
Then my white man's pride came to my aid.
"Nay," I answered. "I will not run while others stay to fight."
"I never thought you would, Macumazahn."

H. Rider Haggard, "Child of Storm."

Allan Quatermain, at the Battle of 'Ndondakasuka, Zululand, 1856.
(Perry Miniatures conversion)

Late in the battle and Quatermain has lost his gun, so he has armed himself with the weapons of a fallen Zulu. But the tide has turned in this succession struggle, and Prince Cetshwayo's uSuthu have triumphed over his brother, Prince Mbuyazi's iziGqoza faction.

Quatermain finds himself on the losing side and is now fighting for his very survival.

I sincerely admired this entry into the recent Colonial Painting Expedition, I love the culture clash imagery, Well Done Plynkes!!

I'd love to see a sprue shot of the NNC bits

Quick question, would the natal native contingent sprue's be useful for darkest africa?, bought a few on sale along with some british soldier sprue's to convert up  a little expedition.

I have a box myself, and planned on using them in central Africa. There's some descriptions of auxiliary tribesmen fighting with Lugard and their 'uniform' was a bright piece of cloth tied around their head, which the NNC have. Those particular warriors would have had cloth wraparound loincloths, so that's off, but they're still probably good enough for Nkonde warriors that grabbed a musket. I think the NNC sprue has a firearm for each body which is way out of proportion for the NCC as I understand it, so they must have anticipated my needs :)

There were all kinds of tribes that were Zulu-philes in south and central Africa, so the Zulu style loincloths and shields wouldn't be too out of place either, although I was going to use them for legit NNC anyway :)

Ona nother note the minsi are again topnotch, they will get much use once tomahawk games new Congo! miniature game is released.

Thanks for the heads up on the game- it is the first Ive heard of it! I've played a little M&T and Saga, they're fun. I'll have to get it.

''I think the NNC sprue has a firearm for each body which is way out of proportion for the NCC as I understand it, so they must have anticipated my needs''

Mine too, going to arm 8 with firearms and have two of the plastic chaps from the soldier sprue as converted nco's.

I managed to squeeze in the last figures for the Force Publique project before 2015 :)

Here's the last weeks output:

A squad of askaris investigate some burned out huts (they were made earlier this month).

This one has an unfortunate inhabitant.

A second squad advances through tall grass, perhaps in Azandeland?

More mutineers, the savage with the impaled head is from another Foundry tribal pack, with a little greenstuff added to the helmet. The mounted character was a pretty rough casting and the painting shows it, I'm pretty sure he was a recast. I acquired him on eBay about ten years ago.

Tribal goods, along with a guy that cares little for the uniform regulations.

I wanted to make a new leader for the 'Arab' slavers to represent Rumaliza or Sefu, two warlords that caused some problems for the missionaries and Belgian interests in the region. This guy is from a Foundry pack with a new rifle from a Reaper weapons pack.

Last but not least, the entire project in a group shot.

I had about twenty figures already painted, from several years ago. After starting this project I estimate that I added the following figures:

53 askaris
20 various character figures
Mountain gun and four crew
7 huts
Flower garden
15 bases of tribal goods

There's still a few things on my list including a station house, chapel, along with some White Fathers and slaves in need of rescue, but I have finished up the figures appearing in the Foundry catalog under the Belgian section, so that feels pretty good.

Thanks for following the thread, much appreciated. I'm thinking of going in catalog order from this point, which means more Baluchis for the Darkest Africa eternal quest :)

Great looking force Matt.  I am curious though, did you pick up all of Foundry's Darkest Africa line? :)

Thanks :)

Yes, I picked up the last packs I needed a few years ago. The reason it's taking me so long to work through them is because I've done quite a few figures more than once (I think I have about eight gunbearers) and I'm making fieldable forces. I sold quite a few I painted on eBay as well, and I ended up reacquiring them when I decided I wanted a complete collection.

I still have to do regular tribals, the various variants of the tribals like archers, women, weird hairstyles etc., pygmies, Azande, and some more cattle. Four more Army Painters should have it sorted.

Then Copplestone's German, Somali, and Ngoni ranges  lol

It's an addiction and easily my favorite period.

Outstanding work, Matt. You beat me to doing Congo Rebels, you swine!  ;)

Only your chance mentioning of it in the "It's Alive" thread drew my attention to this. I had no idea all this was going on. LAF is so big these days it's easy to miss stuff. I never think to look for Darkest Africa stuff in "Workbench" otherwise I would have chimed in with some praise much sooner.

Thank you sir! You beat me to everything else like Somalis, Ruga-Ruga, Ngoni, etc. so it's only fair :)

The rebel faction isn't really formed yet either, I just did everything in the Foundry Belgian section :) I'm not 100% sure what I'd use for the main troop body. I have sixty or so Congo tribals with varying headdresses painted but I'd really like some riff-raff with rifles that the regulars use and the black cartridge box.

Rough anti-goat crowd here on the LAF  lol

Astute detectives may have noticed the top right compartment in my first picture contained some figures that didn't get the attention they deserved- until now, that is.

Unfortunately, War in 15mm beat me to the punch by about a week- his excellent Darkest Africa pictures contained some of the very figures I was just putting finishing touches on :)

I wasn't excessively enthusiastic about painting them because of their sketchy anatomy but like many things they look pretty good after being based. My Dullcote has failed me and left them with a satiny finish instead of the matte I expect.

These figures pretty much finished off the container, although I have a chapel started along with a few bare metal figures that will end up as 'White Father' missionaries. So, there may be one or two more updates :)

I used some sort of plastic aquarium plant, small fish breeding grass.

If I recall correctly I took out the centers and inserted another plant, and used the centers as smaller tufts. I then sprayed them with a couple colors of spray paint. I made them quite a while ago and didn't take WIPs, and my sieve-like mind forgets how I did things :)

Next time I set up for photos I'll take some shots of the grasses.

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen :)

I've managed to finish the roof on a chapel I've been working on. It will be the center of a mission station run by White Father missionaries in Central Africa games. I still need to make a little cross or crucifix for the wall (not to mention convert some White Fathers :) )

I don't think the satin detracts from the figures that much, it is warm in the jungle and I would imagine that the overseers might not let them rest that often  ;)

Yes, it's an old one  lol

Funny enough, I have been considering returning to finish off the Darkest Africa project. I am about ten or twelve packs short of finishing the entire range. It's been a few years since I painted any historicals for myself... been deep in 40K, Rangers of Shadow Deep, and painting for Wargames Atlantic.

Now that I know a bit of 3D design I can probably model and print off the oddball shield types I had long wanted... when I made this thread I'd never considered the possibility that I'd own a viable 3d printer some day  lol

Wow.  This is such an exciting thread!  I too have plans to have a similar game topic, so I am truly inspired over what I’ve seen here.

About tropical vegetation … To make the battlefield or exploration area look more authentic, I’ve found these three useful suggestions for vegetation in much of Latin America, SE Asia and Africa.

- For sharp thorn thickets:

https://wargaming.info/2011/an-aquarium-of-thorn-thickets/

- Making tall grass from artificial grass rugs:

https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/01/23/more-terrain-pieces-for-my-vietnam-project/

- Using washes on aquarium plants:

http://1000footgeneral.blogspot.com/2017/06/making-jungle-terrain.html

I hope it helps.

Dan
PS.  I found a source for the “thorn thickets”.  Just select Type 3:

A question for Dr. Mathias: how late would you say the Force Publique wore the uniforms you painted up?  I am hunting down some figures to do something similar, primarily for World War I but I also want some earlier figures for my Slightly Cracked Colonials collection roughly set in the age of exploration and colonization - not historical in any specific way, just a fun collection.

And anyone with advice for figures to use in 15 mm, I'd love to hear your suggestions.  One way I'm leaving is some Spanish American War figures in straw hats.  Probably take a bit of conversion to make them work but I'm not looking for precise models, just things close enough to paint up.

Oh, and, yes, a beautifully done collection - I especially liked the burned out huts and the one with the dead person in it.

Thanks!

If I recall correctly, the uniforms didn't change much (if at all) after the Belgian government took over the Free State, around 1908. The uniform was supposed to change to khaki around the start of WW1 but as with most things I think there were probably garrisons that didn't get the new kit until well into the conflict. I'll dig out the Foundry Africa books :)

You guys dredging up this old thread have reminded me that I still have several packs to finish to complete the Darkest Africa range :)

Might need to be my 2024 project!
