Title: My Perry War of the Roses collection. Small update: The commander and his buddy
Post by: Percal on August 05, 2014, 12:42:06 PM
For the moment, it's just part of a box of plastic mercenaries and one of bows and bills, as well as some metal commanders, but I should receive today some reinforcements. So, without further ado, some pics taken in one of our club's tables. Please excuse the quality of some shots, but I took them with my phone in not the most adequate lighting conditions, but they look nice enough.
I still have to take some pictures of the last group I added, some Florentine mercenaries, but I think I'll leave them for later, when I finish the crossbowmen and the command group. Hope you like them!

Thanks Captain! I've been a fan of your works for a while. Wouldn't be an exageration to say that you WotR minis inspired me to get mine painted!  :D

Anyway, here are some pics of the Florentine mercenaries.
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/p417x417/10425182_10204381919168053_6104889238913022375_n.jpg?oh=8df93f1477c4737c1ccb67ed0169096a&oe=54432651&__gda__=1413978439_1e12450d51d3506c2a4cc89be1c12f06)

And a little closer

Also, a closeup of the ones I posted earlier.

And a closeup of the scots. The one with the blurred sword is a german mercenary I finished yesterday.

Next in painting list are some genoese crossbowmen, eight handgunners and the rest of the bow and bills box. I think I'll paint those as the troops of the Duke of York. Then I'll get my hands on the mounted men at arms I have waiting on their box. Those figures are a blast to build and paint!

Those money-hungry Florentine sell-swords look great. Can't wait to see the mounted men at arms. And forgot to praise earlier the heraldry, superb.

Thanks everyone! Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I decided to stay computer free this week so I could make some progress, but I didn't get that much done. I finished the genoese crossbowmen, as well as the venetian condottiero and standard bearer, and some of the Duke of York's retinue. The actual Duke is still to arrive in the mail, but I hope it gets here soon. Regretfully, I couldn't get more than the scurrer out of the mounted men at arms box due to a glaring lack of 40mmm round bases. Those are due to arrive soon, too.
Anyway, less blabbering, more picture-showing! XD
Here are the genoese
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/10509658_10204419793154879_2964887228405971886_n.jpg)

Back shot of the pavises (at least the ones that actually have them on their backs)

Scurrer from the Duke of York's retinue

The duke's standard bearer (with the livery standard from the paper banners on the box. I'm thinking of giving a man at arms the Duke's actual standard, depending of whether I use more than one in my skirmishes or not). Also, I think I got the colors mixed up with this one. Blue should be the right arm, and white the left, isn't it?
(https://scontent-b-mad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10606031_10204419795154929_7222145048604609601_n.jpg?oh=d04b9c9cccbfb63ca8d0b8ae6b2f42aa&oe=546FD289)

The venetian standard bearer (again, the paper banner from the mercenaries box) and condottiero. Blurry pics, sorry. My phone was more interested in the background trees.

And the last one, a yorkist man at arms. He will probably be one of my captains in future games.

This week, I plan on getting my hands on the venetian swordsmen/sailors (The Perry's italian light infantrymen), and maybe some of the bowmen from the Duke's men. I also have a second rider from the men at arms box that I built today, thanks to the generous donation of a base by some old GW model. I hope to get some pictures of a game soon, too!

Really nice work and a great collection. One of my main problems is I finish a few figures then my minds drifts and I move on to something else...very little available to skirmish etc even after nigh on 40 years in the hobby!
Title: Re: Some pics of my Perry War of the Roses collection.
Post by: Percal on August 17, 2014, 01:15:13 AM
I'm thrilled you like them so much :D @Happy Wanderer I mix and match a lot of things while painting. Chaotic, really, but fun XD. The metals are the most consistent thing. I use a base of boltgun metal, let it dry really well, and apply a wash of GW black ink. Nuln oil, I believe. The thing about letting the metal dry well is that I don't know why, the ink tends to... move the paint. Only happened to me with the boltgun color, though. Anyway, once the ink is dry, I outline some of the plates to give the armor more definition, and highlight with boltgun again, and then a mix of boltgun and mithril silver.
The flesh and the clothes are usually more chaotic, as I glaze here and there depending on how I see the face is turning out, or if I see the cloth is not the right color. If you want to know something particular, just let me know, I'll be glad to share what I can :)
Now that I remember, I've got some pictures of the venetian infantry and a couple of extras. I'll post them tomorrow night, along with some pics of what I paint tomorrow.

Hey everybody! Sorry for the long absence and lack of pics. I forgot to take pictures to my most recent additions to my collection, so I'm a little behind schedule here XD.
I finished the venetian mercenaries, and also the full retinue, at least for now, of the Duke of York. Next on my bench are the superb mounted men at arms and some mercenary handgunners. I also plan to get the foot knights. They're just too good to resist!
Anyway, here are the venetians and the first heavy knight (the second one in the box, really, as I painted the first as a scurrer)

And a quite germanic looking knight. I only have this pic of this one, but he's holding a hammer in a ready to strike pose. I really like how this one looks, even if it's quite dark. I think he looks more menacing like this.

Hopefully, I'll get some more pictures this weekend. I hope you like them! Cheers and happy painting everyone ;)

Greetings everybody! I'm awfully late with this post, sorry for that. I had the pics snapped for a while, but I always forgot to upload them. I finished all the troops in the Duke of York's livery, and also the Duke himself, so I took some pictures of all of them, bannermen included. As of now, I have as a WIP a group of mercenary handgunners and a bunch of knights to distribute amongst my three retinueas, as well as some of the mercs. Also waiting for a box of foot knights to arrive so I can split it with a friend and add some more guys to my army. I'm also putting magnets on all bases so I can transport the whole army without danger and maybe add some more pics for you all to see.

And now...

The Duke of York arrives.

His loyal longbowmen

And the fierce billmen with their captain (and a sneaky scurrer)

And a pretty group shot (not that pretty, it's a bit dark)
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/6725_10204779091137104_7995411346344539284_n.jpg?oh=1c7a08bc69771a052ba23a2ec6ebfce5&oe=54C14BC6&__gda__=1418186026_5d2fe7bae858eb69af20d7b69b0c1727)

Now to carry on with the rest of my little guys. If things go nicely, I'll snap some pics of the whole army once I get the foot knights. I'm starting to regret deciding to split the box seeing how amazing they are, but they would be a lot of them, son half a box is nice, I think.

Thanks for all the nice comments, by the way. I'm happy that you like them so much  :)

I presume Shaun means the ones on your 'yellow and green' units. Great work by the way, I'm in awe.  :)

@Shaun - If you have ten thumbs like me, Citadel Six (http://www.citadelsix.co.uk/) do banners and badge decals for figures, they're listed under Products - Historical and look quite the part. Hopefully someone reading this will have used them and can comment on how good (or not) they are to use.

Oh, the checkered part, you mean? It may seem hard, but I think it was more tedious than tricky. First, I did vertical lines with green all along the white part of the livery. Next, I painted the horizontal lines. And once that was done, I began filling the green squares. As highlighting all that would have been a pain in the bum, what I did was apply a glaze of Scale75 's african fleshtone through the shaded areas. It's a somewhat dark purplish color, and it goes quite nicely to shade a lot of things.

I have a couple more knights finished, by the way. I'll snap some quick pictures of them this afternoon at the club.

Feel free to ask anything that comes to mind, I'm glad to share all I can about my work.

Here's the knights I promised. I took the pictures at home with a led light and some things may be... over illuminated. But they look almost as IRL, so that's not bad.

First we have the second scurrer I made mixing a mercenary head with the men at arms box. I added the spear to a side of the saddle, as if it was held there with a strap, and a buckler to show that this guy is not afraid to fight on foot.

Next is this one from the Duke's retinue. I kinda like how the horse looks, even though I was not at all happy with the base color. The lighting and shading really did their part

And the final one, this fine man with my attempt at blued armor. The green ended looking quite different from the green his comrades wear, but I think I'll leave it be. It's green anyway, and looks nice.

Quite a crappy picture, though. Looked better on my phone.

Anyway, here they are. I'll post the next batch once it's finished, if I muster enough time to paint them between comissions.

Hi everybody! Sorry I've been a bit absent on the forum recently. I've spent some days away from home, and couldn't post nor paint.

Short update on my collection/project, as I finally didn't get the foot knights, and the project has been in a slight hiatus while I got my hands on some 15mm WW2 germans and a lot of commissions that kept me away from my own minis. (I'll post the germans on the relevant WW2 area of the forum, if you're interested)

So, here we have a couple of new pictures of one of the scurrers I posted a while back, reshot with a portable photo studio, complete with good lighting and all that jazz, and oh boy, does it show.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/1509290_10205173044345688_4427293035802378612_n.jpg?oh=b56a122d432551cc7a168d52b3184233&oe=5513FF82&__gda__=1423418557_311ce3b68fa6be6836b1298e97a9dd3d)

A closeup of his pretty face (I'm really proud of it, I won't lie, one of the best faces I ever did)

Aaaaaand... My new commander, for the yello and black retinue. I have to give them nice names, but as a Spaniard, I'm not able to come up with nice noble english names. I thought of Sir Allistair Crowley of Westwood for this guy, but I don't know how... accurate it would be. Sure sounds cool to me though.

Blasted helmet shadow... The eyes looked good, no need to obscure them :(

That's it for now, but now that I have some time, I think I will at least finish the handgunners and maybe some of the remaining mounted knights. Then, I hope to get me some foot knights too, I got some pretty nice ideas while on holiday in Italy and I'm getting pretty desperate to get my hands on them. Fingers crossed for Christmas XD

Also, I don't know why, but some of the previous pictures broke. I'll try to fix them.

Thaks a lot, everyone, I'm really happy you like them! :D

I think I might reshoot all the other minis I have finished, I love how they look with this lighting.

I thought of Sir Allistair Crowley of Westwood for this guy, but I don't know how... accurate it would be.

Alisdair (or its earlier form, Alaxandair) was a purely Scottish name until fairly recently, so that name might not work. Unless he's meant to be the ancestor of this man: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleister_Crowley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleister_Crowley)?

Fantastic painting all around, especially with the knights.

Blast, I had this topic more than forgotten. I'm mighty sorry. I finished a bunch of guys a while ago, and my collection is almost complete. I now have another mounted commander painted, as well as some foot command figures and a group of mercenaries with arquebuses and melee weapons. I'll try to take some pics this week, with the good setup. Again, sorry for letting the post fade for such a long time. I got absorbed by 15mm WW2 and even with that I didn't take pictures.

The pics appear to have disappeared.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Well, all be damned. I couldn't find a fix for the broken pics, and I decided to pick up the portable photo studio and snap some good new photos. But unlucky me, one of the small lights fell off the table and broke. You see, they're some crappy plastic little lamps, and the cable usually tends to either get tangled and pull them, or it simply pulls them due to its own weight. Needless to say, I'm without the studio for a while until we can fix the damn lamp. I managed to snap some of the old mercenaries though, but only one new mini among them. Sorry, folks.

I'm sorry to hear that.... get it sorted as soon as possible- we need to see those pics!  :)

Will do! We somehow managed to fix the lamp, so tomorrow I'll set up the studio again, and this time, put something so the damn lights dont commit suicide again!
