Title: Quick Play Sci-Fi rules wanted
Post by: 6milPhil on August 08, 2014, 03:50:32 PM

I've realised I can finallt squeeze a game in this weekend with my sci-fi bits from my seemingly never ending project. I'm looking for quick play, simple rules which are free.

Recommendations?

I've heard lots of good things about FUBAR.

I heartily recommend KR16 http://angelbarracks.co.uk/rules.html (http://angelbarracks.co.uk/rules.html)

The rulesets below lean a bit toward pulpy sci-fi (like void, 40k, etc) but are fast and free.  I like fast-play games and have found rulesets I like for most every scope.  I've played and enjoyed all of the games below except Warpath 2.0.

For Warband size games, "In The Emperor's Name" is a great choice.  Though nominally set in the 40k universe with lots of 40k warbands listed and grimdark scnearios, it's actually a great generic skirmish engine (based on Fubar but modified for a bit more detail) with a good unit creation mechanic. I strongly advise skipping the current 3rd edition as it's not actually finished and using the 2nd edition as seen here. http://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/in-the-emperors-name/
It's the game that was developed into "In Her Magesty's name"

I really like WarEngine (though you've got to join the yahoo group to get the rules now). for Platoon V Platoon, with light vehicles.  Very flexible, unit creation mechanic.  Lots of army lists at the group as well.
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/WarEngine/info

Warpath 2.0 (the current verison) looks like another good option also for games between platoon and company size..  It's free from Mantic games. No unit creation mechanic, but there are 4 armies, with enough profiles to represent most anything.
http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html

If you want to play a huge 40k size game in the company size range. the Warpath 1.0 rules are still around on the interwebs. IIRC, Lots more official army lists were released for it, but at least 4 are still avaialble and it's even simpler, being basically Kings of War "In Space".  I find 40k hard to stomach nowdays, but really like Warpath 1.0 as a way to get my old 40k armies on the table for a very fast moving game. Warseer still has it.

FUBAR , one page rules that cover everything in a simple elegant manner, and two pages if you also download one of the many available supplement sheets for any of the more popular sci fi genres

cheers Tom

Just noticed your screen name. If you're playing in 6mm, then Panzer 8 Sci-fi is an excellent choice.  A 2 page ruleset,  that plays quite fast but still gives an engaging game.  Though it might be being overshadowed by Alpha Strike at our club, we've played Panzer 8 sci-fi a number of times and enjoyed it. We even tweaked/reorganized the rules slightly and used the unit creator to make a full list of units.

You can find the Panzer 8 rules (comes with variants for most eras) here:
http://panzer8.weebly.com

You can get our club's version here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/downloadAttach/140892.page
And the Force list we built :
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/downloadAttach/140893.page

The main difference is a slight tweak to the rules for artillery and friendly moving through other units and a reorganization of the layout so they are easier to understand.

A couple of battle reports are here:

Fubar is more or less what I used for my demo game Phil. One sheet of A4 rules. Just how you like them.

Yep FUBAR has it chums.

Just noticed your screen name. If you're playing in 6mm...

Thanks for the recommendation, however I have been drawn from the true path of 6mm, and this is 28mm - I cry myself to sleep at night about this...  :-[

I find incredible how many threads with this same topic there are, and how each of them is full of different rulesets!
I never heard of KR16 and "in the emperor's name" (although i've IHMN), both of them are really interesting!

We've all got our favorites…
As for In The Emperor's Name, if you have IHMN, you've pretty much got all the basic mechanics. ITEN is set in the 40k universe, so it's got force and weapon lists for most every 40k faction (and many obscure sub-factions) and it has a different campaign engine that looks quite good.  ITEN came first and went through a couple revisions before the mechanics  got a "major label" debut as IHMN.

Both are great in their intended genre's/settings or as generic rulesets for porting into other settings.

What kind of sci-fi setting are you planning on using quick-play rules for Phil?
I find that IHMN works really well for the more dirty, grungy type of sci-fi like Post Apocalyptic, space westerns or pioneer colonist type stuff.

As well you should, heretic!   ;)   lol

Seriously, I know few people who stick exclusively with one size (and 1970s 25 mm not = 2014 28 mm in the same army, before  a certain party - you know who you are - says they do.)   :P   lol  Temptation can lead us astray... (bad pun intended.)

Gracias,

Glenn

Glad to hear it!
You'll like it over here in 28mm land.  If nothing else, it's bigger!

My main 28mm games have already been listed, but what type of sci-fi and scope of engagement are you leaning toward.

It's a Aliens type bash... should have some photos up soon.

Hmm. In that case I'd go with my initial suggestions. They'll all handle a pulpy Aliens style battle quite well, depending on the size of the engagement.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

IHMN was created by the same folk as FUBAR if I get things right. And is essentially a more complex version of it.

I'm pretty sure it's a matter of size too. IHMN is a small scale skirmish game while FUBAR is intended for slightly larger combats. Few squads and a couple of vehicles maybe. I've read the rules but not tried playing it yet but that's the impression I get.

you could give deadzone a try, very fun and you can download all the stats and rules from mantics site.
They also have warpath 2, which i personally love for how simple it is.

There is a cut down version of 40K listed online - I have the PDF but can't find the link - more than one page rules, but a lot simpler and more streamlined than any of the official sets, if you want the PDF (it's a freebie so no harm sharing) drop me a line / pm (email is hug_aliensurfer AT HOTMAIL DOT COM)

ITEN/IHMN are for squad-sized engagements - IHMN was written from the base of ITEN.  FUBAR is for platoon/battalion sized engagements and to my knowledge shares an original author with ITEN and not much else.

You can also have a quick look at Inquisamunda, it's based on nercomunda, but adds in lots more warbands and fun.

That be a bit incorrect. http://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/

If you can gain access to the forum, as I can, you'll find that there are development threads for both.

Some of the stats are very similar, definitely elements that are shared between games.

I'm certainly willing to be wrong...I've played a LOT of FUBAR and no ITEN.

One other suggestion for an alien's type engagment is the Ganesha Games "Swatters" rules.
http://www.ganeshagames.net/product_info.php?cPath=1_9&products_id=168
It's designed specifically for Aliens vs humans, with 20-50 minis per side.  It's doesn't do much for vehicles, being an infantry centric game, but might be worth checking out. I've read it and it looks good, but have not played it, so take my opinions with a grain.

Swatters looks good. (Same thing, I've read them but never played).

Angel Barracks' KR16 also looks good for a fast & simple SF rule set.  It was written with 6mm in mind, but is designed for skirmishes with singly based minis and limited vehicles, so you could adapt it to any scale by tweaking the distances/ranges to your liking.

i'm afraid those are definitely not free. :S

But the stripped down version "Chain reaction" is.
http://www.twohourwargames.com/free.html

Still, THW rules are not what I'd call "Quick Play". They're excellent for solo play and have a fairly innovative reaction mechanic, but 5150 is not an easy set of rules to get one's head around.
