I thought I'd start my own thread for my part in Jimbibbly, Malamute and mine's LotR project. Don't want to derail James's as no doubt it'll become another epic like his Mars one, especially when he starts building Minas Tirith, Helms Deep and Rivendell, all in 10mm :)
First up - a Heroine of Rohan

Very nice! :D
Now don't you be getting ideas David - get back to your WWII minis!!! You're already doing two projects in different scales!
Although hmm... 10mm LotR. Hmmm... ;)
Cracking paint job Dr D!

More temptation... You guys must be the Unholy Trinity! >:D

Lovely! :-*
So who of the three of you paints all the baddies?

So far it's Jimbibbly, he's bought the Orcs and Gondorians, I've got Rohan and Malamute's got the Dwarves.

Well there are orcs of Saruman and Mordor, then the Haradrim etc… clever of you to "let" James to do the dirty work ;) I wonder if he will have time for all of his builds though :D
-
Malamute's got the Dwarves.
How appropriate :D
(Sorry Nick, cheap shot, open goal ;))
Very nice painting there Mark :)

OK, somewhen, next year, I'm going to start collecting and painting a 10mm Isengard army... I have to complete a 15mm GoB barbarian army first, though, and some 28mm forces for GoB and SAGA, too. And some more modern zombies... *aaarrrghhh* ;D

Gandalf the Grey

Nice work, Mark.
Excellent result for such a tiny little fella.*

Awesome ;D
I thought you couldn't see them ;D
Looks good but needs a bit of shading on the shield ;)
cheers
James
-
Nice work on the hero but agree about the shield, I think you lose the white design a bit in the photo. It probably stands out better in real life though. ;)
-
Started on two terrain pieces for the Rohirrim, a hall and a farm. They'll work as standalone pieces and as two halves of a larger terrain feature.
Unlike another individual working on this project, I won't be using individual bricks in the construction (life is too short for that kind of madness)

Coffee stirrers and lollipop sticks are excellent for terrain making, well done :D

They're fair game poachers are making big money for teddy bear pelts on the Chinese black market. ;)

Dr De'Ath,
That is the best roof fur I have seen in a long long while :o
Is it one piece and combed back / upwards while wet or did you use separate strips to create the layered effect ???
-
Dr De'Ath,

It's one piece. I wet it with thinned pva and then starting from the top, separated the layers using an old paintbrush to make them stand up. I trimmed them slightly with scissors before flattening them back on to the roof. Not too easy to explain with words, I'll take some photos of the process later today when I make another roof.

As requested:
Barn and terrain board finished - just need to build the hall to go atop the stone foundation. Both buildings will be removable so I can use the base for other things

Agreed. :-*

Started working on the hall. It will be thatched to match the barn but looks like I'm going to have to fix in in place as I need to add some posts to support the front portico.

But you haven't started your thread yet ???
lol lol lol
Not the first time I have heard that statement either..... ;)
-
What impresses me the most is how you finished the board before you finished the buildings that go on it. What he said... that other build.
-
Hi Mark,
Excellent work on the hero figures and the building. James would also compliment you on your thread but am only low to post on Mark's.......,!
Cheers

I'll take some photos of the process later today when I make another roof.
NB: It's best to do one side of the roof fully and let to dry before doing the second side - this avoids sticky fingers and messed up thatch :)
Started with a solid card former
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_11_34_4.jpg)
Cut the fur fabric slightly oversize and make sure its cut square to the warp and weft - this is important in order to allow the separation of the layers
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_11_33_3.jpg)
Glue the fabric to the card former using a non-waterbased adhesive (I used UHU) - if you use water based it will come unstuck in the next few stages. The 'join' at the top is the edge of the fabric which gives a reasonable impression of the hazel 'liggers' used to secure the thatch
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_11_33_2.jpg)
Liberally coat the fabric in a thinned (50:50) mix of water and PVA glue and then working along the warp thread, separate the fur into ridges
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_10_13_4.jpg)
Using a pair of sharp scissors, trim the tops of the fur ridges by a couple of mm. The more you trim off the more pronounced the layer effect on the final roof
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_10_12_3.jpg)
Picture of one side of the roof with all the ridges/layers trimmed
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_25_08_14_11_10_12_2.jpg)
Finished roof - just needs to dry before being painted. To speed up the painting process next time I'm going to add a dark brown paint to the pva/water mix so the roof is shaded during the build. As it is now I will need to ink or undercoat which can cause the PVA to loosen a bit.

True, Malamute's advice is invaluable lol lol lol

Are we looking at the back of the piece of fabric in the second picture? Very effective piece of work. I am thinking about some lost world/ Island At The Top Of the World Pulp action

Yes, it's the back of the fur fabric. The trick is to cut it at right angles to the grain so you can separate the fur in lines along the length of the roof.
-
Great thatch technique - I fought with teddy bear fur once, and lost rather badly ... :(

You can get PVA which, when dry, doesn't soften again when wet (well, unless the water is very hot). I think I got mine from B&Q - it's a few quid more for a litre, but I found it to be worthwhile.
Colouring the PVA mix for a pre-shade also works well! ;)
-
Excellent work, museum quality I'd say. The roof technique is genius.

Here in Denmark it's known as outdoor PVA. A bit more expensive, but well worth it!

Fantastic end product :-*

You created a LOVELY, IDYLLIC scene...VERY WELL DONE!

Cor that's luvly.

Fantastic work! So that's one tile out of how many?

Lovely little creation Mark.

Cracking job :-* :-* :-*
Love the ground work, outstanding.

Fantastic work! So that's one tile out of how many?
I'm not sure how many I'll end up doing, but the Hall is one of a pair, the second is a Farm which I've started work on. Some WIP shots below.
2mm mdf base with initial texture covering

Wall and stone barn made from individual blue foam bricks - I'm blaming you for that madness Mr Bibbly ;)
Vegetable plot is done - these are home made tufts with ground foam added to give the effect of leaves
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/18/1512_28_08_14_7_05_35_2.jpg)
The idea is that the two will work as standalone pieces or can be combined to form a 12" x 6" piece.
-
Loving the veggies mate :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
That's all looking great Mark! I don't know how I missed this thread! 8) 8)

Looks bloody wonderful, mate, full of promise.

Dunno how that Baluchi fella is going to get through that door though...... ::)

Yip, will be another great terrain piece that. 8)

Brilliant. :D
Individual bricks though...

Stunning work. :-*

That shows scale nicely, the crops are fantastic. Individual blocks.... and you where doing so well until the madness took you. ;)
-
Very nice work, the greenery is very effective against the building.
But can we please stop with the individual blocks? Soon we'll be seeing miniature nails in the wooden structures...

They're not bricks, they're stone blocks ;) Picture with a 10mm figure will have to wait till tomorrow now when I post the finished farm square - the glue hadn't dried before I left for work this morning :)

Brilliant. The groundwork with all your home made tufts etc is wonderful. ;D
-
Stunning. Once again LAF is making me look at what I'm currently working on (6mm terrain) and seeing what I can do to lift my game.
-
Nicely done. :D
-
This looks beautiful. That said the stone blocks on the earlier building and wall are a tad large the block size is a little better on the 2nd building. But very nice over all. :-*
-
Looking great, Mark!
:-*
Tell us about these tufts then... :D

Don't hold back, I think you should get in now so when GoT is 'so last year dahling' and 10mm LotR is massively popular and everyone is doing it you'll be able to say 'I was there at the beginning'. :)
We're all 100% committed, I've sold all my 28mm stuff to fund it* and Nick's looking for a buyer for his Boot Hill range** so he can build a huge dwarf army (assuming that's not an oxymoron). ;)
You know it makes sense :D

It's quite therapeutic, once you get used to the occasional static shocks; they're not painful or dangerous but do make you jump a bit.
I bought the Mk1 (dish) version and use it with an aluminium sheet to get a larger surface area. I've also modified a flour sifting cup to charge the metal sieve so I can load it with the static grass and sprinkle it onto the larger terrain areas directly - that's how I did the long grass under the trees on the farm tile.
You need to make sure your hands are glue free when you do it or you end up with flocked skin.
You can also use it for flocking your nails if you've a mind too; here's a picture of Malamute's that he insisted I did before one of his recent big nights out (I've lost the picture of his toenails)

Blimey! That's something new.
Thanks again for the info! I think that's gonna be my next new toy. In the meantime, nice work on the farm. ;)

Those farm houses are wonderful :-* Looking forward to seeing more of this pan out. Great work.

Those are phenomenal, all of it, and particularly inspiring to someone about to embark on a 10mm fantasy project himself. Your terrain pieces in particular are excellent.

Loving this project!! 1) I LOVE LotR. 2) I love the Copplestone line. 3) I have a unstarted project to make my own Collector's Edition of the War of the Ring Board Game. (http://erima.me/miscellany/EM/images/444277489.jpg)
After a year's hiatus from gaming, I'm getting my hobby mojo back:
- Photographing, packaging and eBaying my WFB, 40K, FoW composting in the garage in order to fund:
1) Paying to have my GoT project painted (reinvigorated with the potential of "Lion Rampant")
2) A renewed commitment to my 28mm LotR collection by designing a 6 player Pelannor Fields showcase game for a local gaming con next year. Tons of
models, half painted. If that.
Maybe some pics this weekend. (Photography is the hardest part...)

Correct. They're OOP and currently sell for Smaug's hoard - or the gamer equivalent of it...
