I have tried painting the tartan a few times, with out much success so I am going to get one of these paint pins and just draw the lines one, and see how that works

The trick for tartan is to enlarge the check pattern otherwise it looks too busy on the model as we cant (or at least I cant) get the feel of how a kilt hangs and the weave.

I would go for a large check of a blue and then a thin red or yellow interspersed, Thats what I did when I painted my Argyles for the Boer War :D

Well I had tried some thing simmuler, my self but as you said the pattern just looked to crowded to me. I might just take the simple stupied approch and leave it as is. ever one knows that the man in the skirts are my highlanders anyways. (waiting for the flameing over calling the kelt a skirt)  lol
