Title: First few games of Pulp Alley...
Post by: deflater mouse on August 19, 2014, 06:47:50 PM
So, after months of twiddling around, I finally got to play a game of Pulp Alley, featuring an intrepid group of archaeologist adventurers against the French colonial gendarmie...

The scenario was a smash and grab in a dessert souk...  Featuring an ammo cache, box of explosives, market vendor, alter, and a digging site for plot points...

We got a couple rules wrong on our first game, but nothing too off-base...  We did get confused between perils and challenges in resolving plot points, but sorted it out afterwards...  Overall, we had a great time and are excited to start building up a campaign...

I'm really impressed with the Pulp Alley system and it's flexibility to play out a strong narrative and hope to rope in a few more players for some multi-player games...

Thanks...  I like to scratchbuild, and I think one of the real attractions to pulp for me is that I get to build all kinds of crazy scenary and think up scenarios for them...

Crazy scenary? In Pulp??? Nah...

Ok, getting the table ready for my second game of Pulp Alley...  These were the first buildings I ever built (can't really play the interiors)...

The ship will be the main plot point, and you'll have to bring a minor plot point to it to activate...  An escape to sea!

And some mad doctors and a "Carnage-bot"

We also had Caesar on hand as the Initiative Monkey...

Mesut in the vineyard, scanning the windows...

The Baroness KO's the Fat Man and gets the boat moving (and secures the main plot point!)

Thanks Dave--we had a fun game, and the three of us are planning on starting a campaign in a couple weeks...

We did have a rules question though...  During your activation, if you run into base-to-base with an enemy, can they shoot or brawl you?  Can they only react if you attack them?

Heya -- I'll try to clarify...

First, moving into contact with an enemy (aka "rushing") always starts a fight -- no if, ands or buts. You could still choose to Dodge, but the fight is not optional.

If you do not intend to start a fight, then you can't move within 1" of the enemy.

If you were over 3" away at the start of your activation, then the enemy could choose Brawl or Shoot (or Dodge).
Otherwise they can only use Brawl (or Dodge).

I hope that helps.

Please let us know if anything else pops up.

Thanks, I think we got confused reading the movement rule that says you can't take an action when you run.  I take it this means that "actions" (might, cunning, finesse) are defined separately from "fighting" (brawl, shoot dodge)?  If so, then I could also run and shoot (at -1d running penalty) during my activation?

Glad you guys like the pics!

You don't have templates for the cards you created do you?  ;)

Yes, you can run and shoot or brawl during the same activation. Enjoy the mayhem.  :D

This has come up a couple times, so let me try to clarify...

An "action" generally relates to a non-combat activity that is important to the scenario. Here are some examples --

1. Attempting a Plot Point is the most common action in Pulp Alley.

2. Any ability that includes something like "as an action for this character...", is an action.

3. Maneuvering a vehicle is an action.

In Pulp Alley, if it counts as an "action" then it is clearly indicated as being an action in the rules. Otherwise, it is not an action.

Moving is not an action, it's moving. Fighting is not an action, it's fighting.

The idea here is that an "action" is something that probably takes just a little more time/concentration than punching/shooting someone in a combat situation.

I hope that helps.  :D

What ole Snappy said!

I just stumbled on this thread.
The buildings and ship are fantastic, & I'd love to see more if you have the time.
Thanks for posting such inspiration!
