Title: Early 16C crossbow formations
Post by: olicana on August 27, 2014, 05:19:42 PM
I'm in the process of painting up and basing another load of crossbowmen for the Italian Wars. I've based most (118) as skirmishers, mainly to represent the Gascons and the like that accompanied most French armies in their thousands until quite late on. But I still have several dozen more to base and I'm wondering how to base them.

I'm at a loss on this one. I think 118 skirmishing crossbowmen will be enough for any battle after about 1509 so the extra units will only ever be fielded as early Italians. A couple of WRG army lists give Italian crossbows the option of forming up as formed units (in 'order' rather than 'open order') but everything else I've read suggests that they too tended to fight as skirmishers. I'll only be fielding these extra crossbow units as early Italians as I would probably automatically convert them to arquebusier from 1509 (possibly earlier). BTW, I don't play WRG rules, so I don't need to follow the army lists.

What would you do?

Do you know if formed units of crossbowmen were commonly fielded?

Here's a shot from one of my games. Just for the 'eye', you understand.
