Yes, I've been infected by it. ;D
Like others, I've decided to start by painting up what I need to replay the dodgey scenario in the back of the book, The Battle at the Farm.
So here are the first five of the 16 Crimson Fist Marines in that scenario.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/newboard017_zps814b56e6.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/newboard017_zps814b56e6.jpg.html)
And the orks I have so far, painted almost two years ago for the LPL. The Hvy Bolter and the flamer won't see play in the game.

Brilliant. :D Love the marines.

Sweet...But decals are evil. :D

Yarp True dat. :'(

They look great 8) 8)
cheers

Horaay! Another one for the cause of RT! :D
Those minis look spectacular, you really got the vibe of them. Eager to see more!! :)
-
Both forces look great. Im more partial to the orks these days, but I would have had more interest in the marines back in the day.
I have plans to play/replay some of the old published 40K scenarios including this one soonish, but nothing is locked down just yet. I will keep an eye here for the undoubtedly inspirational ruined space-farm terrain to come though.
You may know already, but BatF was rewritten and revised into a mini campaign for modern 40k in White Dwarf for some anniversary or other back in the 2000s. Regardless of what system you plan to use to play the scenario, it might be fun to take a look at that to expand it out if you feel inclined.
-
Thanks for the info Cheetor. Where could I get hold of the scenarios, is there some on line source?
-
Really nice. I very much enjoy seeing rogue trader era minis painted to a modern standard.
-
Very awesome!
-
Brilliant!
Beautiful paintjob on both the Orks and the marines! :-*
-
Very cool. 8) awesome paint jobs on all those minis as well; they look great.
-
they managed to put a lovely amount of menace into those beakies didnt they.
yup - I think the uncluttered approach works best with the marine models.
-
I'll be watching this! Always love good old RT era stuff. :)
-
Thumbs up! Great work.
The beakies are the only real marines for me...

Some searching reveals that it seems to have been in US WD #338, March 2008 marking some anniversary or other (http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/White_Dwarf_Index_326-350_(US)). Thats just a link to info on the WD contents, not the article.
I dont think that I have the UK version of that WD, but I may have picked it up because its was commemorative. I have read the revised campaign somewhere, so I will dig it out tonight if I have it. Its based on a Battle at the Farm expansion article from WD #96 (I think), if you plan to actually use Rogue Trader rules.
-
Thanks, good man :)
-
It used to be freely available as a PDF on the old GW website, but was taken down in their last webstore update.
You can find it on scribd here (http://www.scribd.com/doc/62710948/Rynn-s-World-Campaign), but I think I may have it on my computer at home if you'd like me to email it to you. :)
-
I found the scenario in the book rather boring. Maybe I just can't imagine an interesting far-future space farm. Good paintjob, the darker colours suit them well.

...I felt the same way TBH. More and better scenarios is definitely something that has gotten better with each edition of 40k. :?

lol
Here's an interesting 40k space-farm, from the Tales From The Maelstrom blog:

I do have the PDF still - drop me a PM if you want it.

Great, I'll shoot you a PM with my e mail address.
On another note, I've just spent the entire afternoon flicking through White Dwarves 94 to 149, with the vague aim of seeing if I could find said campaign. Needless to say I couldn't find it, but how good was the White Dwarf back then compared to the crap they put in it of late. No wonder they had to bin it in the end and start over.
It's odd 'cause now I've thought about it I could have sworn I've seen something like follow up scenarios somewhere.
Oh well ::)
Also found my battered, falling to pieces copy of Chapter Approved. I can still remember buying it from GW Derby, oh the glory days lol

I found the scenario in the book rather boring. Maybe I just can't imagine an interesting far-future space farm.
40K space farms probably ought to be a bit grimdark. Horrific battery farms and abattoirs that make the worst of today's look like paradises, and each one is the size of a city, to boot. Fertiliser and pesticides used on such a vast scale as to render everything but the farms themselves a polluted hellhole.
Alternatively, the pollution has done something Fallout-like to the wildlife. The farms have to be fortified against ferocious predators and beasties. Or maybe algal blooms and fungus have got out of hand and, outside the hermetically sealed agri-hives, blight and corruption run rife, tending by escaped workers who have turned to Nurgle.
Nigh-endless plantations worked by convicts, serfs or surgically-altered slaves and servitors. Battery farms producing nothing but soylens viridiens. Even if the main focus of farming operations on a world isn't this, I can imagine it being a side product. If you don't use the dead farmhands as fertiliser, you've got to get rid of them somehow and you might as well get some use out of them.
Then there are the social practices of the farmers and their local variants on the Imperial Cult. Take every cliche about farmers and make it worse. They're inbred and hate outsiders. They build wicker men in the shape of the Emperor and burn criminals and outsiders in it. Or they slit their throats and feed them to the fields!
Basically, take the worst rumours about the countryside, farms and farming in the modern day, and turn them up to 11.
Alternatively, just make it like a normal farm. But with dinosaurs. Or killer space badgers. You know it makes sense and it would probably help more for gaming than any of the previous. :D
I like to imagine that corn is a proscribed crop in the Imperium. Having conversations about it would just cause too much confusion.

No. 94 had a follow-up scenario - "Skirmish on Rynn's World".
-
Your Space Marines are lovely.
-
Alternatively, just make it like a normal farm. But with dinosaurs.
Actually, I think this is pretty much it - basically, you do have dinosaurs Grox (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Grox#.VBs8pqNEtIo) on planet-wide farms agri-worlds (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Agri_World#.VBs8vKNEtIo).
-
Love those orks.
-
I found the scenario in the book rather boring. Maybe I just can't imagine an interesting far-future space farm.
Quite frankly I think the point was that sci-fi gaming was in its infancy back then. They probably wanted a setting that could be played using terrain that most gamers would have handy.
I even recall pics from that era of Space Marines visiting "low tech worlds" complete with WFB human figures standing in for the locals. The game had stats for muskets and crossbows.
-
Yes, It's not the most involved scenario in the world, as I remember it, it's almost impossible for the orks to win, but it's the nostalgia that attracts me.
This was the first ever table top war game I played. Back when I first played it, we used books for the hill and multicoloured lego for the farm and walls, and some dead leaves from the garden for the wood. Non of the figures were painted and it was all played on my Mum's round, rather small dininng room table. The idea of going back to it and playing with fully painted figs, proper terrain and on a proper board is my motivation.
I guess it's about having all the toys I couldn't have as a school kid. lol
-
Thanks, good man :)
I looked for the appropriate White Dwarf last night, but no sign Im afraid. It looks like Major_Gilbear has come to your rescue anyway.
I would be interested in seeing the WD#94 version too if anyone has access to that.
-
All good. :)
My WDs actually start at 95, not 94, although I do vaguely remember reading it.
I'd also be interested in reading it again if anyone comes up trumps.

I'm away from home until after the weekend. Next time I'll be at home is Tuesday evening. I'll see what I can do then. :)
-
When will you show us more of your nice figures. :D
-
Hope to get the rest of the marines finished this weekend...

Looking forwqard to seeing them. 8)

Looks promising already ;D
-
Great looking marines! Have a bunch myself but can't quite settle on a chapter. Looking forward to more
-
Minor update with a pre-varnish snap shot of some orks.
Hit a little speed bump with the marines as I don't think I let the Klear dry long enough and it went permanantly tacky when I put down an oil wash. :?
Hopefully got it sorted now and just have 10 orks to get done before I'm done with the initial forces for Battle at the Farm ::)
Then I may have a few other bits and bobs to add o_o

look really nice

That's the marines finished, and half the orks.
I seem to be suffering from shitty photo syndrome, sorry.

Just ten more orks to go for the initial game. :D
-
Very nice. Are you working on terrain for the scenario(s) too?
-
lovely paintjobs on both the marines and the orks. :-*
-
They look grand as owt :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Oh man, that's so awesome. Fantastic paintjobs. It is amazing what you can make out of these old figures if some time is invested in painting them with modern techniques and the huge amount of paints and washes, glazes etc. that were not available 20 years ago. I love the bare-headed marines. I wish I could paint faces that well. :-*
-
Very nice. Are you working on terrain for the scenario(s) too?
I've got most of what I need. I want to have a go at the ruined generator that sits a top Bulther's rise, I fancy using it to try out some weathering techniques.
Aside from that I may need to make some low walls to go with the ruins I've already got, then I'll be using palm trees for the orchard.
Thanks for the feedback folks.
-
Top stuff as usual.
-
Brilliant. :D
-
Awesome stuff!
-
Very nice.
If anyone is looking for the scenario in WD 94, PM me.
-
Great project! I think the Crimson Fists are more popular now than they have ever been ;)
-
Finished the last of the orks for Thrugg's patrol.

And a hopefully clearer shot of the whole patrol.

Just got the low walls to do and the defunct generator, then we're ready for the game, but, as these things have a habit of doing, one thing leads to another and I find myself wanting to flesh out my Squat mercs, finish off my original Aly Morrison Imperial Army, repaint my old Eldar pirate company, paint up all my Nid Hunter Slayers, and flesh out the orks some more with a couple of Dreads and some powered armour shock troops. lol
For now here's a photo of a swashbuckling Squat hero who's trying to muscle his way up the painting queue.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Squathero_zps41a1f750.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Squathero_zps41a1f750.jpg.html)
-
Cool.
Love the group shot of the Orks. They look amazing. :D
-
They look great 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Excellent work; the orks look great. :)
-
Wow, they look gorgeous, you really got the essence :)
-
Got the generator done and the walls, but still no game as yet. I'll ty to fit it in next week and get an AAR done.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/generator_zps163c88c4.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/generator_zps163c88c4.jpg.html)
In the meanwhile got some Imperial army troopers done as a test for a new colour scheme, (i.e. different to how I painted them up way back when.)
Tried to keep it pretty close to how they were painted up in the original WD ad, what do you think?
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/new014_zps9f89290e.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/new014_zps9f89290e.jpg.html)
-
They look great, you already knew that ;)
Fantastic painting!
-
Those Imperial Army troopers look splendid! :D
-
Big thumbs up for the Imperial army guys. :D
The generator looks the part too. Are those printer cartridges?..
-
Cracking :D
cheers
James
-
Excellent work. The IG troops look good to me, and the generator is very nice.
-
Nice work on the Guard, but its the generator that I particularly like. Its minimalist, but I mean that in a positive, like-a-real-life-industrial-construction way. It looks like more modern take on a period gaming piece. Its cool 8)
-
Love them! :-*
And that leo tart on the orks are just mmm mmm mmm!
-
RT classic! Nice work. That book and those figs got me into this hobby 1987...
-
Awesome idea and a great trip down memory lane. Keep up the good work! ;D
-
:D
-
Gentlemen, there seems to be some confusion here. There are no Imperial Guard in this thread to date, these figs are the Imperial Army, the Guard do not exist. lol
Slow going for various reasons not related to the figs themselves, but I'm slowly getting there.
Still haven't played 'the Battle at the Farm', but hope to do so soon.
Meanwhile, working my way through the original Imperial Army release, 12 more to go and I'm done with them.
Here's what's been finished to date:
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY001_zps628d124d.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY001_zps628d124d.jpg.html)
And some close ups of the members of the platoon:
Here we can see Major Valentine, shadowed as ever by Com-officer Schmitt, and the Major's escorts, veteren troopers Hadfield and Gosling.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY002_zps578bcba9.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY002_zps578bcba9.jpg.html)
Sergeant Hopper, Captain Armstrong, Vet Sergeant Whistler, Sergeant Monk:
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY005_zps2e5543b4.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY005_zps2e5543b4.jpg.html)
Corporal Stiener, Lieutenant Dorfmann and trooper Uglow
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY006_zps7605458e.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY006_zps7605458e.jpg.html)
Trooper Lever (Objective Marker) and Trooper Holland:
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY004_zpsd1cfa980.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY004_zpsd1cfa980.jpg.html)
Sgt Hicks and Troopers Ciego, Hanley and Morgan:
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY003_zps90b370c2.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY003_zps90b370c2.jpg.html)
And here is my dilema, to strip and repaint or to let lie?
These are the Imperial Army figs I've had since I was at school, painted in the early 90's, I had intented to paint them up to match the additions from e-bay, but I'm loath to do so, what do you think?
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/aRMY011_zps072ff10a.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/aRMY011_zps072ff10a.jpg.html)
Thanks for the feedback so far :)
-
Amazing! So many old beauties painted to a very high standard. Keep it coming!
-
Keep the old paint, but touch up if you have too. It's what I did with mine.
-
Keep the old paint, but touch up if you have too.
Oh I quite agree!
Leave the Green Jobs as they are, delightful!!
IF you think it best hit 'em a lick, or two, as needed.
These are incredibly far from my interest, or inclination, yet I LIKE 'em!!
brute squad
C3I staff
forlorn hope
goon gruppe
last chance chalk
punishment platoon
security section
spec ops team
secret squirrel stick
Surely there's room for one, or more, assignments for the oldsters.
Valerik
hangin' out in the History Heavy half of this happiness
-
I'd strip and repaint. There's nothing wrong with them as they are but they won't quite fit with the new figures and you might end up kicking yourself if you don't :)
cheers
James
-
Army never die!! ;)
I'm with James on this one, strip 'em. The standard you're turning out now is so different to those early figures. They'll look amazing with a new lick of paint.
It's a tough decision but its what I've done with my old Rogue Trader Marines.
Excellent paintwork by the way. :D
I'd love to see you add a Rogue Trader era dreadnought to the force. ;)
-
Big thumbs up for the Imperial army guys. :D
The generator looks the part too. Are those printer cartridges?..
Sorry, yes they're printer cartridges.
Thanks for the feedback. Into the brakefluid they go. :'(
-
Bloody loving them mate! :-*
And I'm with Jimbibbleslydo - Strip, strip miniatures and repaint :)
-
And lo, they came from the brake fluid and thus were reborn unto us....

And finally, we have Jip Seerozli, a wandering fortune teller who had come to the attention of the local authorities shortly before the invasion, believed by those in the know to be an un-sanctioned psyker. However, all records have been lost under more pressing issues, (the ork invasion) and so Jip continues at large for the time being.
-
Excellent. :D Well worth the pain of all that brake fluid.
Still say they need a dreadnought in support... ;)
Lovely work on the Psyker too.
-
So good!! :-*
-
Absolutely great! Bravo! :o
-
Lots of fun, those Troopers are brimming with idiosyncratic charm.
No cookie cutter, faceless military machine here, but a group of personalities... destined to be ripped limb from limb by extra terrestrial horrors with appalling regularity I suspect, but y'know, thats just the way it is.
Great work.
-
@ Cheetor
lol lol lol
That's a fine recruitment slogan right there.
@ Ray Earl.
Nothing more RT than an army dread. One on the way.
Out with the break fluid once again ;D
-
Like them all, the psyker is especially a very lovely idea.
-
Finally got around to playing the 'Battle at the Farm'.
Here's a sort of AAR.
I only remembered to get my camara out after we'd finished the first turn lol
Still not much was missed, the Marines were in hidden deployment with just two sentries on the board, and the orks deployed behind the burnt out generator on Bulther's Rise.
Thrugg split his forces, he went right towards the orchard together with Hruk's Squad and another squad of five troopers, moving flat out to close the distance to the farm. In the great tradition of Orky leadership, Thrugg stayed at the back, behind the two squads, purely so he could put the boot in and keep his boys moving of course.
Hruk, in contrast, led from the front. Huzzah for Hruk 8)

The other two squads moved over the hill in a direct line towards the ruined farm buildings.
We join the action in the second turn where the orks continued their rush to get into bolter range. The two squads moving over open ground were suddenly fired on by a marine toting a missile launcher, fortunately for them the marine's aim was off and the plasma missile fell wide. Brown trouser moment for all the ork troopers in said squad.
On the right flank a squad of 5 marines broke covered and moved in to the orchard.

The orks on the right flank moved into bolter range and opened up on the squad of marines, needing 5 on a d6 to impact. after the smoke cleared a marine lay bleeding out in the dust. First blood to the orks.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm005_zpsba15bb4e.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm005_zpsba15bb4e.jpg.html)
The orks in the centre also moved into range and opened up on the marine with the launcher. However, as the marine was in hard cover in the ruins, the orks needed 6s to hit, their shots riccochetted of the ruins and the two squads grunted in frustration.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm007_zpsfc7b7ce1.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm007_zpsfc7b7ce1.jpg.html)
In the Marine's turn, the launcher once again fired on the squads in the centre, this time scoring a hit but only eliminating one of the orks. A squad of marines also emegred from the rubble, they opened fire on the same squad and dropped another two troopers, but the orks could smell fear in the filthy 'umans, and their resolve held.
The marines in the orchard returned fire on the orks, and although they hit they failed to penetrate the orks hides.
The orks continued to advance, the orks in the centre scored a devasting salvo on the marines in the ruins, taking down the marine with the launcher and another marine, cheers roared through the ork ranks.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm008_zps3c6d4529.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm008_zps3c6d4529.jpg.html)

The orks on the right flank have now moved into the cover of the orchard and from here fire once more on the squad of marines that stand in their way, dropping two more.
The return fire of the marines drops Hruk. (That's what you get for leading from the front dumbass. lol)
Thrugg grins as he sees his profit margin suddenly double.
The rest of the marine fire proves to be ineffective.
Things are looking pretty bad for the marines, but their moral holds and they dig in.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm010_zps41e1f32c.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm010_zps41e1f32c.jpg.html)
The orks now advance into the short range of their bolters, (a fact they will later regret,) and their fire becomes more effective eliminating two more marines, the sole survivor of the squad breaks and runs for the hills.
Just as the orks jeer and shout in triumph, a weary Pedro Cantor leaps from the rubble of the farm stead, and charges head long into the nearest ork squad, twin bolt pistols blazing. Despite recieving a volley of bolter fire that penetrates his armour, he shoots down one of the troopers before slamming into another, the unfortunate ork is pulped with a power fist to the head.
The marines remaining in the ruins follow Cantor's example and charge to meet their foes. The marine who had fled hears their cries and rallies to join the fray.
Hurrahhh lol

The orks in the centre are in disarray, one squad is all but destroyed, the surviving member embroiled in vicious hand to hand combat with an angry marine, the other squad have formed a gun line and pour fire onto Cantor, but their efforts prove fruitless and the are charged in reply, slain but for the squad leader who flees screaming only to recieve a bolt shell in the back from Pedro's pistols.
The balnce has been re-addressed. :o
On the right flank a sole survivor from the marine squad is holding up the ork's advance, to add to their perplexion, A gore splattered Pedro Cantor is now advancing on their position.
Thrugg roars to advance and fires on the marine with his plasma pstol, but the orks have used all their luck and the shot fails to wound.
[(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm016_zps090b8a74.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm016_zps090b8a74.jpg.html)
The three surving ork troopers fire on Cantor, forcing him back into the shelter of the ruins, the other marine also moves back to the ruins as Thrugg races towards him.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm017_zpsd916d3d2.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm017_zpsd916d3d2.jpg.html)
Grown bold with greedy thoughts of buried riches, Thrugg continues to advance, his plasma pistol slaying the last surviving marine, but before he can reach his hidden cash, Cantor steps from the shadows to confront the grizzled ork warrior, their eyes meet in a steely stare as time sudenly seems frozen on the smoke filled field of battle, then Trugg twitches and raises his pistol.
There is a crack and a fizz as bolt pistol and plasma pistol fire almost simultaneously.
Cantor is not ready to die today, and Thrugg groans before dropping to the floor in a crumpled heap, a smoking hole in the middle of his chest.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm018_zpsd48ea80c.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/Battle%20at%20the%20Farm/battleatthefarm018_zpsd48ea80c.jpg.html)
On the seeing their commander fall the remaining orks fire on Cantor but their will is broken and they are no match for the marine hero.
Cantor silently surveys the bodies 0f his fallen men. It is a hollow victory :'( :'( :'(

YES! Awesome report. Looked like a hell of a fight and it brings back great memories of wargaming for the first time in my own basement all those years ago (except your terrain and minis are much nicer than mine were at the time!).
I'm pretty close to finishing what I need to run my own Battle at the Farm. Just need to finish a few scenic items and put together and paint a Pedro Cantor model.
Thanks for the report.
-
Very cool :)
I may have missed this- did you use the original stats for the marines?
-
Lovely AAR! Great terrain, great mini's, a real treat! :-*
Great blend of modern sensibilities with old school charm.
-
Very cool :)

Yeah, marines with toughness 3, power armour saves on a 4.
Works out well as the marines hit, but only have a 50% chance of wounding the toughness 4 orks, whereas the orks really struggle to hit, but when they do they often wound.
Cantor was a monster though, he pretty much single handedly turned the tide.
Over all we had a fun little game, although it was odd going back to an IGOUGO system.
I can't imagine ever playing 40k in any of it's versions with more more than a handful of models each side. The last time I did so, probably about 8 years or so ago, it was mind numbing lol
-
Great stuff 8) 8)
See, aren't you glad you stripped them :D
cheers
James
-
One of the best battle reports I've read for a while, it sounded like a really fun game. I must say your board and terrain is very atmospheric, well done sir. A great read and a lovely trip down memory lane. Ahh a handful of small units aside, where 40k plays best; thats why I only have a 500pt force to game with now.
-
That's a lovely desert table. And those Guardsmen are brimming with character and beautifully painted.
-
Thumbs up for letting me once again dive into nostalgia and see such praise for the good ol' days of WH40k as it was still fun to play. Keep it up, we want more, MORE !!! 8)
-
Lovely models great battle report!!!! :-*
-
:o :-* :D
That is all. ;)
-
Nice AAR! :)
-
Are we going to see the "Battle for Jadeberry Hill" as well? I would also love to see you doing a tutorial on how you've painted up your forces, especially Orks and Crimson Fists. :-*
-
Awesome battle report :o
-
Agree, absolutely awesome! And also want the Jadeberry game too!

Shame. Could have swooped him for an upainted one. ;)

I got a bit lost along the way and ended up painting these two ork dreads instead of the other two imperial ones.
Still, enjoyed it and it's given me some more enthusiasm as I've been struggling of late.
Crappy photo.

Very nice to see these older models.

Great work. Some lovely painting as usual.
I particularly like the 'gunfighter' pose on Burt. :D

Well done, can't wait to see the Imperial Dreadnought suits.

:o :-*
Those are brilliant :)
-
I'm loving the Dreadnought! The guy with the goggles looks cool.
The whole force is looking really cohesive.
-
Top notch work, mate! :-*
-
Just so awesome! I'm not one to go for the old models over the new much, but you've painted them so well that they look amazing. Totally in the spirit of oldhammer 40,000 but with a modern skill level of painting. Really inspiring me and reminding me that I have to finish off my new versions of Thrugg and Hruk and get my Battle at the Farm scenario on the table...
Nice stuff! Keep it coming.
-
Excellent!
-
Lovely, lovely, lovely. :D
All the way to the little 'die' markings on the dreadnought.
Beautifully painted marines. Love 'em. :D :-* :D
-
Love what you've done with these, and the details on the Dread are both a nice nod to the old style as well as a much better version of those old paintjobs.
The Marines are just brilliant all-round; I love the sculpts and the paintjobs. :)
-
Fantastic paint job on these. That may be the best Oldhammer Dreadnought I've seen so far. The whole marine force looks spiffy.
-
Outstanding down to the graffiti on the dreadnought suit! Brilliant. 8)
-
These are really lovely. The marine with the bare arm and his mate with the little goggles are sublime.
I like what you did with the classic toothed mouth on the dread too. That decoration is usually placed lower on the "face", but it looks better where you have put it. Do you have a close up of the mouth by any chance? I might snaffle that idea.
Fantastic work.
-
Everything is said here, I can only join to the applause!! Wonderful, seriously. I concur, the teeth look grim and menacing up there. Great work!!
-
Sheer brilliance. I love the multi-ethnic Army troops - a refreshing sight - and the Orks are just incredible!
-
Absolutely wonderful, I'm just going to ask for more.
-
Was any more work ever done on this project?
Are we going to get more tales of derring do on Rynn's World?
8)
-
You're actually making me sad... You've managed to capture somthing some completely- so perfectly...
-

Hi,
The only thing that I've done since is three more orks.
I do have a lot more planned, I've had another group of 6 half painted orks sitting on my desk taunting me since early November, but I'm struggling with time and motivation; when I have the time, I can't be bothered, and when I get the urge, I've never got time
There's definately more to come at some point, including the battle of Jadeberry hill :D
You're actually making me sad... You've managed to capture somthing some completely- so perfectly...
Thanks for that.
-
Finally got those orks off my desk and feel a lot better for it.
The colourful ones are the latest batch, the dull ones are the previous batch that have already been varnished. :?

Masterful paintwork. Really awesome looking stuff.
-
Fantastic stuff, brings to mind my childhood, looking forward to the next instalment
-
Awesome! Love 'em ! :-*
-
You can't stop now!! :o
I really want to see you painting an Imperial army dreadnought! ;)
-
Huge bravo to you!!!
-
Hey, I've been away from the forum for shops while but on my return I spotted this thread...I'm about to embark on a very similar project, thanks for the inspiration! This all looks fantastic. :D
-
Cracking! :-*
I've never seen Orks painted grey before, but that REALLY works.
-
Thems is great :D
cheers

Finally got those orks off my desk and feel a lot better for it.
The colourful ones are the latest batch, the dull ones are the previous batch that have already been varnished. :?
I really like both of them, although I do admit they look rather different to each other.
Even though they are varnished, could you not use some very thin green and yellow ink glazes to help "colour in" the grey ones a bit more? You can still re-varnish them again afterwards, and that would help them blend in with the new ones rather more.
And, I will also say this: I know the bright green Orks are a bit of a GW cliché, but given that the their weapons and equipment are supposed to be made from scavenged scrap, I actually quite like the brighter contrast of the skin against it more than the other way around (i.e., dull skintone but brighter/more gaudy armour and equipment).
Ultimately though, they are well painted and done (which is far more important!)... So, er, well done I guess! :D
-
@Major_Gilbear
Thanks for the feedback. I think what'll happen in the end is that the new bunch will gett dulled down when they get varnished. I've tried to purposely up the contrast and make them more colourful as away to compensate for this. So kinda accepting the dulling effect of the varnish and trying to incorporate it into my painting style if you will.
However, I was going to varnish this morning but discovered to my surprise that my compressor blew a small hole in the storage tank just as it got up to full whack. Scared the shit outta me and shot rusty water all over the floor. lol
I guess it's rusted through on the inside of the tank, I have had it about 6 years and it was a cheap one, so I'm not complaining. Still whacked some green stuff in the hole and covered it with duct tape. I'll give it another go tomorrow and if it doesn't hold I'll have to get another one.
In the mean time some more orkyness.

First up we have Spanna, the gretchin and ol' Dok Feelgood.
Spanna reluctantly became the group's Mek, after IrnJock, the former mek boy dissaperared while enthusiastically demonstrating his new 'Teleporta'. Truth be known it was always Spanna who fixed most stuff anyways, IrnJock was always too busy with his 'theorik finkin'
Dok's just your average fun lovin' painboy, likes nothin better than gettin out Rusty, his favourite bone saw and doin' a bit of 'amputatin'. Wierd thing about this partiular sculpt is the dead snotling the good Doctor seems to have strapped to his back.

Group shot of the latest additions still waiting to be varnished.
Just a group of 8 'Powah Arma' shock troops and Warboss 'Narg ear Bitta' to go, then I'm finally free of space orks :D
-
Lovely Ork group. :-* One minor complaint: drill holes into the muzzles, please. :D
-
Fantastic! :-* These are bringing soo many memories back. My brother used to have these and I'd be facing off against them with my Space Marines every week!
-
Thanks chaps.
As to the muzzels, yes you're right, there are a couple that I should have done, but in general I find most of the orky bolter muzzels too fiddly. On the Hvy Plasma guns, I like to think that they differ from other weapons and that the plasma builds up around the smaller side holes.
Started varnishing this morning. Seems like my botched repair is holding.
-
I had a little go at knocking up a table for 'Jadebury Hill' using my existing scenery, what do you think?
Now I just need to rustle up a couple of players.

That's a great idea

Just three more to squeeze in before the end of Orctober
-
I always enjoy seeing your work - these look brilliant, well done! :)
-
The last three!

Jadebury Hill looks bang on to me. I do love those old armoured orks, lovely miniatures.
Beautiful painting too of course. Its nice to see that Bad Moon boss in a different colour scheme. I am tired of seeing it in various yellows, but that scheme makes me look at the figure all over again. Tasty.
-
Really nice! :-* Love the various skin tones across the different models and the dark colour scheme of the armour on those last few works really well. Love the rusting too.
-
This whole thread* is so full of amazing work!
So inspirational.
It makes me want to paint my RT Marines right now, although they will not look as good as yours....
:-* :-* :-*
*No idea how I missed it until now.... ::)
-
These are superbly well done, especially the skin on both the Orks and the humans.
-
So cool! :-* You certainly threw a new perspective on this! The Jadeberry Hill scenario is pretty fun, looking forward to seeing your approach! :)
-
Stunties.
This first lot were painted early 90's. and the rest have been done to match up., more or less.
I'm resisting the temptation to go back and give them a touch up.

The rest of them follow. I'm still missing 9 of the original releases and the rest of the heavy weapon crews and command squads, if anyone has any unwanted examples knocking around drop me a PM.

Painted in the early 90s? blimey I don't want to think how bad my paint jobs looked in the early 90s certainly not that good..
-
Lovely work all round so far... but those Squats are a notch up... ecxellent :-*
-
Brilliant!
I love Squats, so I may be biased, but you cant knock that brushwork even if you do not like the little fellas.

That is pretty much my thinking too.

I have a few of the old Adventurers (the type with no arms) if they are any good to you.

I don't know if I was clear, only the five in the first photo, the smaller slightly fuzzy, don't look at me too closely photo, were painted then.
The others were finshed yesterday ;)

Thanks but it's the warriors that I'm after.
Thanks again for the feedback folks:-)

No you were quite clear but the guys in the first photo are still way beyond anything I was churning out in the 90s lol

Stunning :o

Next up, army dread from the 53rd mechanised division, to support the forlorn remnants of the 4th.

Nice,
I never could quite figure out, what the weapon arm is actually carrying? In the early days GW had a tendency to let the same weapon look differently on various models.
-
It's the missile launcher.
It's not the most obvious, but if you look at it from the side, the horizontal bars just in front of the yellow and red cables are the missiles on a cylindrical rack. The muzzel of the thing is not that dissimilar to the marine launcher in the original box of beakies.
Took me a while, it's definitely grown on me over the years, to the point I now actually like it.
-
Absolutely stunning. :D
Now that is what I call Rogue trader.
Lovely paintwork.
-
Cheers Gents. :)
And now for something completely different.
A Zoat attack squad. The first of three. ::)

wow, those are a blast from the past!
Great stuff Hubba!
-
I'm so happy to have found this thread. It is amazing how much excellent brushwork is assembled here and how much the spirit of Rogue Trader lives on in it!
Thanks for sharing!
-
Whilst the Zoats are great, I have to say that my mind was completely taken back with that Army Dread.
Amazing work on that big lad!
:-* :-*
-
I wouldn't want to meet that lot in a dark alley after fetching a pineapple pizza! :o
Really interesting group - it looks good!!!
-
Lovely stuff here hubbabubba, well done! :)
I personally always had a soft spot for the RT-era IG armies, not least because I never saw all that many of them over the years.
If you would like some suitable chunky robots that would fit right in with these old models, I would suggest having a look at Pig Iron's Wardroids (http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/wardroids-c-7.html) - they look perfect with the right paintjob (despite what they look like in the store pictures), and are the right size too. :)
-
Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen those Space Zoats - they still look good, nice work!
-
Love the army dread, and those squats are just awesome
-
Oh, how did I miss your latest additions!? :o So absolutely great!!
-
Such a cool project :-*
-
This is probably me repeating myself, but this is great stuff!
-
Brings back memories (not the painting that is far superior to my efforts then - and probably now).
I do wonder if GW are going to bring out a retro set for Rogue Trader?
-
I do wonder if GW are going to bring out a retro set for Rogue Trader?
I can't quite figure out why GW hasn't made a set of plastic beakie marines. They would be printing money.
I suspect that they will do it eventually- from what I understand they have done two earlier marks of power armor in the Heresy boxes, and it's a matter of time before Mark 5 and 6 show up.
-
Haha. My evil plans for reducing all known life down to the level of nutrient soup grow closer to fruition ;D
Another Squad of unstoppable zoat warriors ready to squish all that they encounter.
One more to go. and then a couple of squads of their vicious little masters before I move on.

That's the most Zoats I've seen assembled in one spot :)
Great painting as well!
-
[Insert colurful insult here as a show of my admiration] :D

After what seemed like a long time, I finally managed to get hold of the missing first release squats for what I considered reasonable prices. I was helped out by a particularly decent fellow on the Facebook Squats group, (thanks once again.) It then took me a couple of months to get round to painting them all.
Here thwe are in all their pint sized glory :)

Nice colour transitions on the ambull.

Hello. Motivated by the need for some Swifts for 5 Parsecs, I've done a bish bash bosh job on these venerable fellows.
They should do the trick despite them having no visible wings, and as a bonus I can use them with the Zoats for a Rogue Trader skirmish or three.

Oh wow, that's the largest group of Zoats I've ever seen together! 8) And to think I've only now discovered this thread, even though you already posted them way back in 2017 :o
Love the Termagaunts too. Their paintscheme is very similar to my own horde of the critters (which, I just realize, I've never shown here).
A very awesome force, when all together. Worth a pretty penny too by now too...
