Title: Urban scenery
Post by: Suber on September 18, 2014, 01:57:48 PM
One of my long(loong)-term projects has been about building a proper urban board. I got some buildings about a couple of years ago, but never really got into it. The absurdly gorgeous Ferrograd (http://theleadpile.blogspot.com.es/2014/08/the-mean-streets-of-ferrograd-boyl-2014.html) has been the final inspiration I was requiring  (of course I won't reach half the awesomeness of Ferrograd, but I must credit Colin for the inspiration) :)

My first building would be this tavern. The set wasn't designed to be played in the inside, so I made some modifications. First of all I added a foamboard floor:

The bar was made with some more foamboard and cardboard:

Then some posters, every local tavern has some dirty posters with concerts, ads or just the menu:

So this is the inside after I placed a couple of tables and seats:

The outside was just grey primed. To do some proper weathering I would need an airbrush (which I do not have nor plan to buy). Buuut I had more primer sprays 8-). They work for me, it was just a matter of making it dirty :D:

The final touch was to add a sign. I opted for a hanging tavern sign. As you can see, a coffe stirrer makes the deal. Now you can see here the Firefly influence on me. I already painted a Blue Sun container, so I went on the same way. According to Google Translator ??? it says 'sparkling pulsar'

This is the final aspect:

You can follow the whole process on the blog:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/09/the-sparklin-pulsar.html

Hopefully this will be only the first of many (and better) buildings, I'll keep you updated!

Really cool. Love the inside work. Personally, I love adding such details to your scenery. It's real zen to do and adds a lot of fun and realism to your stuff.

Thank you! :) I enjoy building these dollhouses :D to the extent of my skills, of course. I aim to build some dirty slums, I'm not really sure where will this lead... ::)

Second building for the project! Same manufacturer, MDF built. As I now have a  trader of... extrange and usually forbidden objects ;) (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=69419.msg875707#msg875707), I definitely was in need of a place where to trade. With that idea in mind, I set a place with two separate parts, the 'public attendance' and the back room, using a piece of foamboard:

The floor was the same for both parts:

I've finally found a place where to set this old examination table! :) (for years I thought of a diorama about a Mechanicus lab, but I've been too lazy ::))

So I've discovered that my bit box should better be known as 'junk mess of different crap', but hey, it has served me for this purpose :D

If I were a genius like the Star Wars production team (http://www.filmclub.es/2014/10/140-fotos-de-modelos-de-naves-y-vehiculos-utilizados-para-la-trilogia-original-de-la-guerra-de-las-galaxias-1977-1983/) (sorry, the link is in Spanish, but I believe the pics are quite self explanatory o_o) I would do quality stuff like that; for the moment this is all I got, but well, looks enough for me:

I wanted it to look shabby and crowded, but as I told before, I must not forget this is a piece of scenery, not a damn dollhouse :P, so it must be somehow playable.
As you can see, nothing complicated for the outside:

As this is a... discrete business, the owner doesn't want any sign. If you are coming here, it's because you know what you are looking for...

As I look at it I realize it needs severe weathering effects. I must dare to try grafitti effects, signs or stuff like that...

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/10/a-place-for-obscure-trades-and-sales.html

I have some Sarissa Precision stuff on the way home 8) and I'm beginning to come around some ideas for the board. I'll be posting all that over here...

By now I need a board to house all my stuff, so I've finally commited myself to build something! (but don't expect the wonders I tend to see over this forum... :'()

My idea is to use a few 120x60cm boards I have at home. Using some foam, I've come to these basic shapes for a beginning, this will be my port:

There will be an additional level in the back, but still haven't decided the shapes or height. I just begun the 'first floor' ;)

I intend to use that not only for my RT settings, but also for Fantasy, historical or whatever other scenarios I may come up with, so I needed a generic paving. Some tests led me here:

Well, this is nuts! :?  I might do bigger paving stones on the second floor and in futures boards, but for the moment this is what I got.

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.gr/2014/11/besenval-port-stage-1-of-well-many.html

Well, let's see where this leads me...

Thanks! More incoming soon (I hope). Now I admire even more those wonders that I often see over here in this forum! o_o
Title: Re: Futuristic scenery

I finished the first board! Hooray!
Found a spray that doesn't dissolve foam that much:

So I was definitely going in this direction:

For the second level, I had to start the process all over again. Measure, cut, carve...

Stairs, I love stairs :?

After various (and very colourful) insults and swearings, I got that:

Which eventually turned into this, when some more paint & glue work was done:

So this is it, ready to be inhabited!

You can find a few more pics of the process here:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/12/besenval-port-stage-2-first-board.html?m=0

I won't start the second board immediately, as I have to take care of several different projects (and my sanity and will need to be restored!), but I'll let you know when it starts again...

What someone who has the know how needs to do is make a 3D printer file to make a press you can push down on the foam to make the brick pattern. If you make it right, it might even work on foamcore.

I'm totally nuts, can't believe I forgot posting my stuff (d'oh)

Some time ago I got some stuff from Sarissa Precision. I'm making some slow process (lot of stuff!), but I can show you these two bridges.

Not future aspect at all, but what the hell, I liked it enough, don't need anything else:

How could I resist this? ::)

This is how they look on my ongoing board:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/01/building-bridges-for-new-year.html?m=0

Apart from that, I also got a few industrial walkaways from Bandua Wargames. Again, MDF stuff. I used the same technique and got this:

This is supposed to be 'designed for Infinity'. Meh, I can use that as well :D

Whenever I get to build some more proper buildings using foamboard I guess I'll use that as a walkaway between them, that kind of stuff.
Here you have it all on the blog:

New goodies! If I'm doing a harbor, I need harbor stuff. That's why I included this canal barge by Sarissa Precision.

Following my traditions, I thought of making the interior detailed, but this time it really made no sense, you cannot attach a single mini inside of the cabin :(

Of course the kit is designed to look Victorian, so I had to add some stuff to warhammerize it a little. Not too much, just small bits here and there:

So it finally looked like this:

I used the Kev Adams mini as the captain. The coat and the wool hat drove me that way ;)

So he's the man for the ship!

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/02/sailing-through-river.html?m=0

I should have a look for an industrial crane, it's just the stuff the port is missing. For the moment I've just seen the gorgeous Ichabod by Fenris Games, but I fear it may be too big for my humble board. Do you happen to know of any other kit suitable for my purposes?
Title: Re: Urban scenery

Should it not be driven by cherubs and have a few more skulls over it? ;)

Title: Re: Urban scenery
Post by: Suber on February 11, 2015, 08:13:45 AM
Well, I'm afraid I have no real cherubs to drive the barge (something I may have to solve at some moment...), but I remembered that I got this from the Imperial Chapel kit:

Enough for the moment ::)

On the othe hand, I was also reminded that life in the Imperium is hard. A guy who lives wandering all over the rivers and canals, from hive to hive and to the outlanders domains, for sure must have a little bit more firepower than a single gun:

So with these two simple additions, the barge now has a little more personality :D:

I made a mini-entry for these:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/02/bonus-piece-ship-v2.html?m=0

So thanks for the suggestions! Appreciated! :) Now I'm on the look for cranes and stuff, but I'm on my way to make another addition to the industrial area. Coming soon! :)

Another crane option...

http://dapol.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=563

OO plastic kit, similar to an old Airfix one I think - may be slightly small, but might work and has an industrial feel to it

The barge is wonderful, Suber! The extra details - subtle, small - are excellent. The bolter/autogun on the front is inspired! The bridge is damned nice too - I'm tempted to get one for a Death Race-type project I'm working on, as it would make for a great little bridge on an industrial board, I think. Looking forward to more of this thread!
Title: Re: Urban scenery
Post by: Suber on February 19, 2015, 03:48:39 PM
Thanks, pals! Hmm, that Dapol crane looks sweet. Maybe too small, OO scale, but for that price I believe it's quite a nice option and something could be arranged. Hmmm... Thank you!

In the meantime, I've put my hands on this warehouse, Sarissa Precision again:

I didn't want all the board to look extremely dark and rusty; I mean, didn't want to take all to the extreme. That's why I went on light colours this time, to give some variety. Of course it couldn't look bright and clean, I had to find the balance...

I thought of working on the inside, but I still don't have enough crates & stuff, so for the moment I'll be using it just as a box for storage purposes (well, in fact that's what a warehouse is supposed to be :D). After handrails and ladders were properly weathered, this is the final result:

You can find it all on the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/02/port-warehouse.html?m=0

I really need to work on a new board, but I'm too lazyyyyy...

In the meantime, I just have finished another kit. I've used this Helipad to build an Arbites Station:

I painted the Arbites shield, but used a decal for the fist. 'That will save me time; besides, it will look much better; blah blah blah'. The fact is that the decal totally flaked off so I finally had to paint it again. All for nothing!

The sign was quite easy (maybe too simple? :?)

It happened to be perfect for my Arbites Arvus!

After all these buildings I think it was definitely time for some places to live in! All those citizens need a home, after all! I think I have a thing for these real estate issues... :D

The kit is provided with just one floor, but it's modular, so I got another one. You can get as many as you want, but for the moment I'm OK with these:

But at this point I lost control . I really thought that, if I was to build an apartment building, I was going to need some furniture and stuff! Shamefully I lack the patience to wait for another purchase (though I admit there are some pretty cool items out there that I may use in the future). By now I have enough MDF bits to buils my own Ork fortress :D, so I thought I could use some of them ;).

These are going to be shower heads:

Some beds (maybe too small, but these are only to give the impression of a bed...)

Wardrobes and/or fold-away beds:

Generic stuff:

Just to end losing my mind, I'm sure you'll agree these are mere houses, but not cozy homes. What would make the difference? What do actual people have at their homes? Pics of your beloved ones! ;D

You can find it all here on the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/03/my-own-dollhouse-pt-1.html?m=0

Still working on this madness, let's see how this ends ;)

Pretty cool, is each floor an individual apartment or are the rooms all separate tenants rooms? If it's separate apartments in each room. Might make the center room a common area, kitchen and laundry.  Maybe also have a TV that is stuck on the imperil public broadcasting service,  with only two other channels that cover sports and 24th religious services  lol.
For the individual room's,  books,  magazines, flowers,  individual computers, religious icons, posters,  sports equipment,  and items of a more private form's of entertainment.   :D

That is awesome. Interior is also one of my concerns about scenery. I always thought it was strange with empty buildings or missing bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and such stuff.

Title: Re: Urban scenery
Post by: Suber on March 06, 2015, 07:15:54 PM
Thank you all! Right, my idea is using both central rooms as common areas, with a washing machine or whatever. I'm only trying to make this an interesting, but still playable place, so giving the illusion of homes will be enough. I'm facing serious difficulties regarding space and individual bathrooms; I'm implementing a controversial solution ::), but I hope it will fit in my purposes in the end. I'll be improving the household goods as I build more homes and get my own real estate emporium :D
Title: Re: Urban scenery

toilets and kitchens might be obsolete in the future. With food taken in pill form and thus no waste product ;) But I guess people still need showers unless they are nano coated.

Sleep can be replaced by pills too, probably.

So in the end steaks, toilets and sleeping is only for the rich.  lol

showers are easy, just make them a few inch square in a corner with standing room only. And have the crapper right next to them.

Post by: Suber on March 07, 2015, 11:04:07 AM
Yup, that's the way I'm going, I'm adding just a shower space; the hole will be used as a latrine (you may want to cover it with a grid when taking a shower... ::)) The kind of gritty solutions we already can see in the movies (I'm thinking of the fifth element apartments ;D), when space is an issue. Let's see how this turns out...
Title: Re: Urban scenery

Multi Pass! I was totally thinking of fifth element also.

OK, dollhouse finished! Here you can see what I was talking about regarding the shower/latrines. Besides, by using more MDF bits I made some TVs and shelves:

As Commissarmoody pointed out, central rooms will be common areas. First floor will have a couple of microwave ovens (or whatever they use in 40K):

I've placed a washing machine on the second floor:

OK, enough of the inside! Let's get some dirt on the outside! Some posters and signs on one side...

And some grafitti on the other:

You can spot a classic quis custodiet ipsos custodes?, not much explanation needed. The Lux Mundi was a funny idea that came to mind as I was painting the very letters. They are considered a subversive heretic cult accountable for several recent riots. The word is that they even have attracted attention from a misterious Outworlder who has recently come with a bunch of lookalike thugs... ;)
Bottom left you can see... a Golden Throne ;D and well, several other stuff all over the wall. Some experiments for future grafitti ;)

This is how the building looks:

You can find all the specifics here :):

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/03/my-own-dollhouse-pt-2.html?m=0

Truly enjoyable, but if I've ever want to see this board finished, I must begin to build regular buildings with no inside performance, I cannot afford a dollhouses city! :?

The golden throne made me laugh :)

I love what you have done with the interiors.  Too much of that sort of thing is impractical if you plan to game in the terrain, but the implied use for the rooms using the little touches is really nice.

After loong searching, finally the suggestion by S44lade appeared to be perfect! Thank you!

The issue was the scale. I was OK with the structure, but the cabin was quite problematic. I enlarged it a little using the first piece of card I found:

I thought a Servitor was the most logical option to man the crane. I found an old 1/48 plane pilot; with the severed GW head, it could work...

The crane itself looked neat to me:

For the inside, there was no point in sculpting it all over; I used the oldest trick in the movies, just painted card! :D

Well, it works! You are not supposed to pay attention to it!

So after some more work, it finally got this aspect:

It's totally enough for my standards, it fits in perfectly in my board:

The whole work, on the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/04/scale-is-not-issue.html

Thank you to all who suggested ideas, they all were extremely helpful to define the project!

Thank you! This was an element I've been trying to add to my scenery almost from the beginning, but hadn't found the right piece until now. Once I got it in my hands, it was nothing but taking the obvious (i.e. easier :D) choices.

The thing I was needing now was a few more shipping containers. I placed an order toLaserCutCard (http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/index.php?route=common/home), (great product and even better service!)
I'm totally satisfied with the containers. This is what you get:

I decided to make them all in a row; I think it's less mind harmful ;D

When finished, they look like this:

But that was the easy part, hehe, now you have to paint them! (now it's when I miss an airbrush or something like that...)

You can find it all here:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/04/card-is-new-sexy.html?m=0

I cannot but recommend these. They are cool pieces and the price is unbeatable. I also have a couple of buildings, will have to put my hands on them ;)

Title: Re: Urban scenery
Post by: Suber on May 21, 2015, 08:20:55 AM
Sorry, missed your comment! Yup, they are unexpensive and really nice :). In fact, today I'm bringing the first of the buildings I still had pending:

Though I painted the locks, I later realized I was going to spray the whole building all over, so please ignore the blue windows there, just my scattering lack of planification.

It's a two storey building. I didn't glue these pieces for storage reasons:

Grey primer spray and then let's begin with the rest:

It definitely needs some dirt...

For the signs I tried the same style I've already used for other buildings. Blame Google Translator if they are not accurate :P

The whole set looks this way, once I added some simple grafitti and stuff:

You can find it all over here :):

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/05/unsuspicious-building.html?m=0

Once again, card is surprisingly good stuff, better than I imagined. I still have another building, but I need some stuff for it before I start it. Soon, soon...

Thank you!

Today it's finally time to pay my debts ;). Loong time ago Whiskey Priest organised a giveaway over his blog (http://theleadpile.blogspot.com.es/) and I was fortunate enough, not only to be granted a mini, but two BOYL14 gaming tables:

Thank you, man!

What I thought I could do was... an arcade room! ;). And then the gamers generosity came up again. Cheetor (https://sho3box.wordpress.com/) sent me even more tables! Yay!

Thank you too! Guys, you made this possible, thank you very much :)

What I hadn't found was a proper facility. I was thinking about building something up out of foam board, but then I saw this from LaserCutCard (http://lasercutcard.co.za/shop/):

I finally had everything I needed! So let's go for it!

I decided to add some more flavour to the arcade room with these other beauties from Resinaplanet, from their Euphoria ranges (http://www.resinaplanet.com/euphoria/escenografia):

(Oh, come on, you know it was needed!)

I guess everyone over here has played this pinball...

For the two arcade machines I had some inner struggle. So many options! I finally paid tribute to Tron:

And the latest version available of Street Figther :D:

I also scratchbuilt this simple dejarik board:

So this is the final result:

With a couple of minis for scale purposes:

I called it 'Flynn's' after the arcade from the Tron 2 movie.

This is it! You can see it all on the blog:

Awesome arcade setting. I was so hoping you'd call it Flynn's. The painting is a nice blend of clean and grubby, as opposed to war-torn or super clean.
I surprised you didn't have a 'Space Paranoids' machine, although that might be too much of an inside joke.

This piece may require some prior explanation, as it is quite a local issue...

Beyond all the topic regarding Spain and bulls, it is true that the animal itself has become quite a recognizable icon all over the country. In fact, if you ever make a road trip over Spain, you most probably will get the chance to spot one of these at some point:

Former ads for a brand, the ad themselves were removed about twenty years ago or so, but the 14m tall bulls remained as 'artistic heritage'.
Well, anyway, this was just for you to know then how irreverent and cool this looks to me:

Coming from Surus Creations (http://suruscreations.com/es/), this post-apoc piece is terribly sweet. Simple in its design, that is what makes it so nice.

This company produces some nice scenery and they are planning to turn on the post-apoc side, so it is worth of keeping an eye on them. Here you have a size comparison shot:

Back again with scenery after a shamefully long hiatus. I still have plenty of MDF stuff to build, but I have recently felt the urge of doing something different. I've got some foamboard and plan to use it, but for the moment I'm risking to do some really unexpensive, so you can expect some scenery on a budget ::).

The other day I just had this follow-on milk can in my hands...

This could be a huge oil tank for my port, that makes sense... But a building makes more sense! (Seriously? That makes sense?)

I used one of Roebeast's Doors, really gives this the touch it needs :)

I only added a handmade sign on the top, as it was way too flat:

The Chinese stuff also allows me to use it for any Firefly setting (that in time will come. One day...)

You can find it all here:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2016/02/follow-on-milk-building.html

In time I guess I can build a full neighbourhood of these ;D

Back to the buildings!
I have quite a number of MDF buildings (and yet more in their boxes, glups!). But, being amazing as they are, they lack the... chunky entropy look I am aiming to for my board :D I mean, I'm not looking for a shanty town, but more for a medieval-like uncontrolled urban growth. Houses are just built wherever they are and streets and alleys simply happen to be those tiny hollow spaces in between, some of them maybe even being buried under more houses.

So, take the pics above, add some retro sci-fi to the mix, shake it at will aaand... let's see what happens. I started with some basic shapes:

I think this second building is too bulky. Anyway, it was already built! I needed it to be that way as I made some inner stairs:

I thought of a walkway between the two buildings, but the roof looks more medieval-appealing:

That red box is an (empty) air refreshener :P

This is pretty much it all. I may add some more details, but for the moment it's ready for painting. Here's the blog post:

Let's see how it turns out!

Loving this latest batch of structures. I think you're really nailing the haphazard looking medieval feel you're looking for.

Some close-ups:

I tried to add some chaotic electric wiring all over. Far from my desired effect, but I've learned some things.

I also added a religious icon over the arch, in resemblance of medieval walls.

From medieval to urban art. Apparently the Imperium is not well perceived here:

The Keep Calm posters are mine. Easy to design and fun to post here. I made an English version to make it recognizable and a Gothic version, as the Imperium obviously print them in the oficial language:

This is pretty much it, here you have the blog post (with some references for the posters)

I've learned some things about these buildings, I'll try to improve whenever I decide to make another one! ;)

I'm bringing a new piece :P. I got some stuff from MadMechaGuy (http://madmechaguy.kong365.com/en-gb) some time ago, time to open the box!
The first kit I'm assembling is the elevated monorail station. As soon as I saw it, I needed one. The problem is that all the kits come with no instructions, your only reference are the pics on his web. I'm no new to MDF kits, but I had some problems when having all the pieces spread for priming and not being sure of what goes where. Anyway, the kit is great. Ultra simple painting, just sprays all over :P . Green base and then priming sprays of different colours for weathering/dirt effect.

I made some props to enhance the subway looking.

Just a little more weathering and rust, this time with brushes:

I used some MDF spare bits to make a sign:

Finally, some signs and posters:

The full kit includes two shelters. One for the ticket vending machines:

And another, just plain. I believe I can use it as bus stop if I just add a sign.

So this is it!

I've finished the metro! You'll see I specifically aimed for the easiest solution. I'm afraid I was kinda of in a rush, so there are some really crude examples of bad work that will need a proper review. But for the moment this is it.

The metro car itself bears no mistery:

Given my RT-oriented idea, I thought the driver could only be a Servitor o_o. I hope this is gruesome enough:

Not that it's quite that much seen anyway:

So this is the car. Not excessively dirty, I think I could have weathered it a little bit more:

The inside is fully playable:

OK, now the elevated railway. Once again, the easiest, laziest approach :D. Spray all over, that's all ;). I then added some posters and stuff I had gathered from all over the internet (oops, I forgot to post them):

Not perfect, but at least it gives the impression of something:

Time to see how it looks like on a board:

Let me tell, that board is 4x4'. This monorail stuff is huge! Some more pics with more stuff for reference:

Well, it certainly adds something to the board :D, the 3D approach needs more representation! ::)

Great work! I agree with the idea of terrain being more three-dimensional, I wish I had some good pictures of the Necromunda tables we used to game on; we joked that they were 6x4x3'.

Very nice!

Those tracks provide a very nice way to provide movement for miniatures on another level.  If you place other structures next to the monorail and allow minis to jump from rail to building you'll add a whole other dimension of movement to your games.

I've done this before on some of my layouts using 0-27 track and found it really adds alot of visual and tactical interest to a game.

When displaying all the stuff for the monorail pics, I couldn't but notice how grey, dark and dull my board looks. Of course it's partially intended to be that way, but well, not so dull! I needed to bring some more colour.
I had been thinking about billboards for some time. Ads are part of any modern society and I really couldn't see a reason not to overcrowd my board with some of that, just like our cities are nowadays. In fact I had already tried a first experiment a few months ago, if you remember:

OK, so let's see... I had two quite large billboards from my LaserCutCard buildings. I finally dared to do something on them. Apart from that, I simply collected a number of card pieces (actual labels from clothes, both Mrs. Suber and I got something out from that shopping day! ;D). They are rigid enough and a few had nice, interesting shapes. So I came to this:

They didn't have to look pleasant to the eye, or realistic in our way to see ads nowadays. They had just to give the impression of advertising in this sci-fi context. I'm using them mainly for RT, but if I ever dare to begin my Firefly silly Project... well, some stuff will also be used. So, expect some signs in Mandarin (or whatever Google Translate said).
After some weathering, this is what I got:

[img width=500 height=375http://i65.tinypic.com/2qx1aax.jpg[/img]http://(http://i63.tinypic.com/b5ijrq.jpg)

Easy solutions to make them stand:

So the final result was like this:

I couldn't set the whole board for a decent pic, but at least you can get an idea...

Here you have them all:

It's really been a year since I last did something on this project?? :o :(

I did this some weeks ago, but hadn't posted over here; it's a river barge by MadMechaGuy. Larger than expected, the basic kit looks more or less like this:

So I added some bits to make it look more crowded, but leaving it playable:

Here you can have an idea of its size:

My most recent addition was kind of unexpected, as it evolved on the go. I'm beginning a market for my board. I had a .jpg of rugs downloaded ages ago from some place I cannot remember (if you happen to know the source, I'll gladly credit my benefactor). I just printed them in an A4:

But they didn't fit in any stall I had, so I built my own with a couple of cards and plastic pieces:

Then rolled and stacked some rugs and...

They won't resist a close exam, but it's more than ok at tabletop distance.

I've got the Micro Arts stalls, they'll be next in my queue ;)

Thank you! It's terribly easy to do, and I think you can play with the configuration of the stacking to get different results. Here you have the file:

I simply printed it at A4 size. You may want to do some previous tests in B/W to check if it's what you want or if you need to resize it.
I originally got the file thinking of my modern Afghan board, but that was ages ago and I cannot recall the original source :(

Noice! For those without access to colour printing, craft stores sell little bags of patterned paper offcuts for scrapbooking, they often have some vaguely "exotic looking" patterns that would make for decent rugs :)

I got the full market :D

I got the nice Micro Arts stands, which looked simply perfect for my purposes. They just needed to look worn out, as dirty as my whole board:

I turned the big one into a spice market or food store. Made the spice with greenstuff, as well as some xenos fruit (or something allegedly edible at least)

But there was quite an empty space calling for something to fill it. With some more greenstuff and a couple of MDF gears from other kit, I came to this:

Just used a few staples to build a cage and so I got a yummy space cuttlefish :P:

This is it:

Let's go back to the small stands. I delved into my box and got a salvaged military equipment stall:

As well as a low-tech equipment stand:

Not all! I also got these jars by Fenris Games, it was the perfect occasion to paint them:

So this is my marketplace so far:

Every adventurer needs a place where to buy some food, new weapons or whatever!

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2017/07/not-portobello-road-market.html

I still have some more pieces to paint, but for now I think it works...

Of course, Chris is one of the authors of GASLIGHT, so it was a bit Victorian, but I could imagine a Future Wars version with anti-grav threads woofed to propulsion threads, just the thing for a future tosser.  lol

The original game had a proper circuit to follow, with plenty of high cliff walls to meet, in the most unfortunate manner. Not unlike a certain 'pod race.'  ;)

Missed Chris doing one. But since i haven't seen Jamie at a con in some time i wouldn't be surprised.

I'm back with some more cheap scenery :D

Many moons ago I told you in this very thread how I used an old air refreshener (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71097.msg1102085#msg1102085) to add volume to a larger structure. The idea got stuck in my mind, and with time I got a couple more of them. Using them in combination with a little box, I thought of these tiny houses with their own courtyard :P

Well, you'll envision better the idea in dirty grey:

Now just some regular stuff people in the hive would have...

The clothes line is... well, just a piece of actual cloth custom cut :D. The well is nothing but a spare piece from a tap after some home repairs.

The flower pots are made with little pieces and bristles from an old brush. The garden table is just the spare button you get when you buy new trousers.

On the other house we have a superglue cap power generator:

A thing I kept in mind during the whole process was storage:

I've realised that the 'on a budget' thing is but a mere excuse to build silly stuff ;D

I've made some more improvements from different sources.
First of all, these little items from Valquiria Studio (https://valquiriastudio.com/en/home/) (from their sci-fi and post-apoc ranges).

Power generator and beacons:

Control consoles:

Supplies and mines

Alien eggs (ew!). Translucent resin stuff:

More resin stuff:

Tokens:

About those tins, the upper one has a mere 'Prandium' on it (just Latin Gothic for 'food', I'm keeping it within 40K standards). Below, one of them has the Blue Sun logo (I'm also keeping it Firefly friendly!)
