Title: General De Brigade Fictional Peninsula Battle
Post by: valleyboy on October 05, 2014, 10:15:11 AM
Fictional GdeB game somewhere is Spain

The idea was to have a game with a bit of movement.....

But on the other hand this is in the Peninsula so its not necessarily going to be straightforward with lots of obstacles, these are not the grassy plains and rolling meadows or Central Europe or the heart of Russia
All is up to chance, the table sides will be diced for and wait for it, when we get to musket range of the central convent, we shall decide by a dicfication off :D (or a dice throw).... if it is already occupied by some Iberianittites or the dastardly Napolenistultists

The OOB wastweaked from the Vittoria OOB in Dave Brown's GdeB Wellington's victories scenarios

For British this means
Brisbane's Bgd - 45th, 74th Highlanders,88th

British

Picton's Division
Brisbane's Bgd - 45th, 74th Highlanders,88th Connaught Rangers NS 60TH Foot
Colville's Bgd -5th Northumberland, 83rd Foot, 87Th Foot and 4th Foot
Power's Brigade - Portuguese - 9th and 21st (2 battalions each) with attendant Cacydorises

Cavarly - Part of Grants - 10th and 18th Hussars
Ponsonby with the 5th Dragoon Guards and 3rd Dragoons

British cavalry with superior mounts
Artilllery - 1 3gun RHA batt and 1 3gun Foot battery

French

Leval's Division of Maquerry and Morgan's Brigades - 9 battalions and 1 4gun foot battery
Daricau's Division 5 battalionds and 4 gun Battery

Poor small units French Cavalry
1 cav brigade of 13th and 18th dragoons

Avy's brigade of 27th chasseur and Nassau Chasseurs along with 2 gun Horse battery

French cav only 12 figs strong with pathetic inferior mounts

Game objective

Get control of the valley - in effect control the Convent on the hill
Who holds it - is it occupied by the French or is it occupied by local insurgents- the armies will find out once they get in musket distance
Deployment - at each road entry - just to make it difficult - all deploy but you may not turn up where you exepct
Vineyards = units wil be unformed
woods open - 1/2 speed- some of the hills have impassable sheer faces
The opposing forces arrive on roads at the extremes of the 8x5 table

In the first few turns both sides use tactical movement allowing infantry and arty moves of 30 and cavalry moves of 40cms
Turn 1
British left flank
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames001_zps4d74a9e6.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames001_zps4d74a9e6.jpg.html)
British Right flank

French
The opposite French left flank

and the French right flank
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames004_zpsa5c53295.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames004_zpsa5c53295.jpg.html)

Ya boo hiss, he's behind you..... the French commander
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames005_zpsa785605a.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames005_zpsa785605a.jpg.html)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames006_zpsac07dedc.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames006_zpsac07dedc.jpg.html)

A few turns of tactical movement...

( Now now gentlemen, don't be unkind, the French do not retreat nor surrender  lol )
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames008_zps2965271e.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames008_zps2965271e.jpg.html)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames009_zpse1a512e5.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames009_zpse1a512e5.jpg.html)

In a word the advancing British rt flank makes  contact withe the village (church and windmill) whist the French rt flank pushes on to the Convent
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames010_zps05ba0679.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames010_zps05ba0679.jpg.html)

so the centre of the battlefield is beginning to fill

On each flank the French are fearful... nay.. in awe (or shit scared, depending on your bias) of the superiorily mounted and more numerous British cavalry
This checks the advance of the French right flank who seem afraid of being flanked whilst on the British right the cavalry stall the French allowing the British to enter the village

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames009_zpse1a512e5.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames009_zpse1a512e5.jpg.html)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames011_zpse40d9dc9.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames011_zpse40d9dc9.jpg.html)

At the Convent, the French find out (on a dice roll that their advance guard has already been turfed out but they press on with the attack and overwhelm the local guerrillas holding and merely take an extra turn to enter), they baulk though at attacking the village and settle for holding on the other side of the vineyards whist the 60th foot push through generally squashing grapes and enjoying handfulls whilst they close on the French
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames014_zps73d66b69.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames014_zps73d66b69.jpg.html)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames013_zps37c0770d.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames013_zps37c0770d.jpg.html)

Meanwhile on the British left the cavalry threaten menacingley and eventually charge
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames017_zpsba410fff.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames017_zpsba410fff.jpg.html)

The 5th Dragoon Guards see off the first weak French dragoon regiment, rally then stuff the other weak dragoon regiment
On the British right with the town in their posession the 18th Hussars go clippety clop, clippety clop....... thunk..... over the French 2 gun horse battery that has been an irritant to date
However British cavalry do as they always do.... and next turn whilst disordered they cop it from both French light cav units
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames025_zpsd6214a31.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames025_zpsd6214a31.jpg.html) but eventually rally

Behind the vineyards next to the village the French infantry poor double six volleys into the 60th foot who are forced to retreat but the 74th Highland regiment take their place though their line is disordered by the vines and make a better effort of trading lead with 2 French battalions
(by this time, much to the frustration of Joseph the French are chucking out hundreds of double six throws but only against skirmishers with little additional effect - footnote - if Mary was there I bet she'd be pretty much pissed off as well I 'spect)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames022_zps3d28c2d4.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames022_zps3d28c2d4.jpg.html)
The French seem to be getting the best of the firefight here but on their right flank disaster  threatens as the Frech are caught in line by the charging cavalry..

Miracilously the pull out another immense effort (2d6 again...bastards) and prevent the Britsh from ploughing into them (well not just yet)
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames024_zpsb5885d75.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames024_zpsb5885d75.jpg.html)

However time passes and the pressure evetually tells and the French are forced back

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames027_zps6a86d6ed.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames027_zps6a86d6ed.jpg.html)
Forced back despite doing this
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames029_zpse6e92ac7.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames029_zpse6e92ac7.jpg.html)

Things are getting dire and the French attempt to close with the Portuguese in a desperate effort to achieve victory
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames023_zps26d44017.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames023_zps26d44017.jpg.html)

Them dice is a bugger
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames030_zps95541213.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames030_zps95541213.jpg.html)

(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames023_zps26d44017.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames023_zps26d44017.jpg.html)

Glory glory hallelujah teacher hit me with a ruler (opps wrong words, sorry)
The 1st 9th Portuguese Line gets hit by a charging French line whilst faltering, throws a 2d6 loses the melee by 1 but captures the colour of the 1st/9th Legere
("hoolah Abilio stick this tricour rag up ya jumper and leg it behind our mates")

End result the French decide to withdraw from their right centre and convent leaving a hole
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames031_zps5d4879a6.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Naoleonic%20Game/NapoleonicGames031_zps5d4879a6.jpg.html)

As for the Scots, well they'll just be Scots...
See yoooo Jimmeh

A superb report and photos. It was most enjoyable to follow. Yes, indeed, General de Brigade rules do capture the essence of Napoleonic warfare.
