I've gotten it in my head to expand a collection of Renaissance figures into the naval arena. So: being a novice to this brand of miniature collecting, can anyone advise me regarding scale, brands, etc? Again, I'm aiming for the Venetian/Ottoman conflicts.

Which rules are you going to use?
I'm interested in the subject myself, but haven't really done much about it so far.
NavWar has a range of ships in 1/1200. They are ok gaming pieces and relatively cheap, but not great models.

As for rules, I'm not too sure. I'd much rather get a line on miniatures first...

Like you, for me this has been slowly simmering on the back burner for some time.
I've looked around and for me it would have to be Rod Langton's stuff. A good range of nice sized ships at a fair price. I would not go smaller because everything gets so fiddly in the pell mell of galley warfare in smaller scales.

I painted a dozen or so of the Langton galleys and they really were very nice.

Thanks all! I wonder if anyone on LAF has bought Figurehead's Christians and Corsairs range, as I'm having the devil's own time finding pictures. The Langtons are tempting...

I have a fair selection of Langton's ancient galleys. They are nicely cast, but I find them infuriatingly fiddly. I do NOT want separate detail parts on a 1/1200 model...
Then again, I'd never do rigging on these either. YMMV.
