Title: 15th C. Swiss Wars
Post by: Kingscarbine on October 06, 2014, 08:41:33 PM
Hi,

Just moved to Bern and I'm looking for books about mid/late 15th C. Swiss Wars. Are there any good English or French titles available?

Cheers,

Nuno

Regrettably there's not so much in English as I'd like (as a non-French or German reader).
There is the Osprey 'Swiss at War', but for a fuller account I'd suggest Richard Vaughan's 'Charles the Bold'.

Happy reading.
Simon.

Thanks Simon.

It's a shame the lack of bibliography on the subject. With so many 15th C. wars I was expecting a lot more titles. I'm looking for something other than Osprey books so I'll put "Charles the Bold" on my list.

Cheers,

Nuno

There is always Charles Oman's Art of War in the Middle Ages Vol 2 - not altogether on the Swiss but not a bad start. I fear that there is a LOT less out there than you would imagine. It's the same for the Italian Wars, with several books just being rehashes of the same scant original sources / information.

Good Luck!

Regards,

James

The Murten Panorama is a huge painting 10 metres x 100 metres that was painted in 1893.
The painting is in storage but you can see it on the website here.

There is a book with articles in German and French.

I also have a German set of Notes for Teachers about the Swiss Burgundian Wars.
I bought this in the museum at Murten.

The museums at Grandson, Murten and Neuveville have interesting collections.
Lenzburg, Bern, Basel and Zurich also have small displays.

I live in Seon, near to Lenzburg.

Mick

some good stuff in here and the whole book is a great read

Not a bad book but it mainly deals with post 1500. Although not strictly 15C, here is a link to my own 'Renaissance' book list - you will find something in these about the Swiss, but they are not really about the Swiss Wars with C. the Bold or with the HRE. My  books were primarily collected for the Italian Wars.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the late reply but it's been all work and no play.

Mick, If I find myself near Seon I may knock on your door.

Cheers
