Title: Westeros for SAGA and CMON GOT, Black Plague and LOTR Moria
Post by: Devoted of Slaanesh on October 08, 2014, 09:54:30 AM
Hello,

So it is my turn to join the ranks of people recreating Westeros. ;)

My plan is to use this models for Saga games, but will try some other systems as well.

Have started with two Stark archers, don't now if they will be Warriors or Levi yet, so I plan to paint 8 of them, and after that 8 models with bills - all Stark from Perry's infantry box for WOTR.

Some pictures:

When I finish the bases they will look pretty decent in my humble opinion.

I have a question as well - how do you cover the plastic base of the models - just put some more sand or you level it up with Miliput or some other sculpting material? Any advice could help.

Nice start! As for the bases, I usually level them up with some cheap sculpting clay.

Looks good, I wonder what their battleboard looks like?

One option you might consider is a glue gun. The figures go down fast and the glue ends up smoothing down the "pitcher's mound" once you throw down sand.  I had a blog post about it with pics up here  (http://twincitiesfieldofglory.blogspot.com/2014/01/getting-band-together-norse-gael.html)if you're interested.

Thank you both - for the good words and for the advices.

The board is tile from Dust Tactics core set - very handy when you try to make a decent picture. ;)

I have this:

But again, I have a question - how to preserve it from hardening, once I open the original package?

Regards,

Meto

Seal the bag with a clip, then put it open end first into another plastic bag , wrap that around the whole thing and clip that shut aswell, making sure there is as little air in the bag as possible.

I tough that the Hobbit range Wargs will do excellent dare wolves. But now they look to me a bit big. In the book I remember their dead mother was described with the size of a young elk? What do you think?

Hi,

My project is still going on. I have made some LOTR decors for my future games, as well as the first knight from the command group. He will lead my first point of Stark archers in battle. Need to make a banner for them as well.

Here is another foot knight, I have ordered the new Perry box and soon will start them as well. He will lead my bill-men in battle.

I had this idea to use armoured hobbit representing Tyrion for a while. Got Mery and Pippin cheap few days ago and I liked the second better for the role. GW Rohirrim for Starks? absolutely! The lower tech armour fits perfectly with my minds eye of the Stark bannermen and men at arms. That is precisely what these are - with WOTR heads and arms on Rohirrim torsos and the joins masked by fur cloak trim.
And since the ranges are both Perry Twins designed, I am also having some success experimenting with cladding Rohirrim horses with Perry WOTR horse armour, saving the WOTR horses with their medieval harness for unarmoured poses, and substituting horses heads too...

Nice additions, they look great.

Style wise the riders of rohan will fit in nicely, and those are neat conversions sukhe_bator. My only concern would be the fragile horses who are only attached to the base by one leg- meaning most of mine have snapped and needed fiddly repairs, or have been replaced from other ranges.
Title: Re: Westeros for SAGA
Post by: Devoted of Slaanesh on December 01, 2015, 01:39:46 PM
The only problem I have is that my Rohan raiders are painted more than a decade ago (not very well). It's true also that the horses are a bit fragile but that's life in Westeros.  ;D
Didn't know that they are sclupted by Perrys and it makes perfect sence to me now joining them in my Stark army. Will look around for few more cheap unassembled ones. That will save me some paintig as well.

sukhe_bator your conversions are great. Hope to see them painted soon.
Title: Re: Westeros for SAGA
Post by: sukhe_bator on December 01, 2015, 05:18:05 PM
I agree the horse poses make them fragile. I have drilled out the hooves and inserted wire and used drilled plastic slabs to create additional attachment points
Amen to that, Devoted - I hope to see them painted soon too! Maybe next year

Are the Perry WOTR plastics and the LOTR ranges generally the same scale? In particular I'm considering putting a LOTR plastic head on a Perry build.

Some of the LOTR models are bigger and it all depends of which one you have chosen to use.  Some look well aside Perry WOTR models.

It seems to me the ones that work best are figures with bulkier builds and those with cloaks. There's a slight difference between the horse's heads but that could also be put down to the breed of horse

Ha ha, true - that's the way they stay in the box, but somehow the final result is dancing zombies. One of the fatties is doing Air guitar anyway. Thanks for the good words both of you. :D

I am done with two survivors - Samcon and Baldric, very nice models and joy to paint. Five more models and I will be waiting for the rest of the KS to arrive.

Tonight's game: 40pts Lannister vs Stark, Missions scenario. Hear me roar - 16 to 14 points, last turn only Flayed man and Clegane were on the board. Great game with my buddy Thomas and he is hooked! :D

You won't regret mate! Game is awesome - first tabletop I play frequently after the dead of GW Fantasy battle years ago and I truly enjoy it. Will have to mobilize to sit and paint the models I play with - Lannisters and Boltons, with so many wins they deserve better. ;)

Could you give us a couple of sentences about the rules dynamic, and what makes it a great game?

I’ve seen plenty of comment (good & bad) about the sculpts, but nothing really about the game...

Well, I like it and you will get a positive one from me.

For now you have 5 armies to choose from: Lannister, Starks, Night Watch and Wildlings. Boltons can be hired as mercenaries from Starks, NW and Lannister or to be played as separate force.

So you have combat units that can be lead by a hero - usually gives them some sort of bonus. You have also noncombat units to choose from - they can affect the game from a special board and with their unique abilities. You can use them every turn once. They also kind of replace the magic that used to be available in Warhammer Fantasy.

Army composition is pretty simple, for the points decided you can by whatever you like- CU and NCU. You have to appoint general and the war can start.

You can premeasure whenever you like. Also you have a deck with action cards - 14 standard for the fraction you lead and 6 from your general. You start the game with 3 of them in your hand and you can use them at any time you need their effect.

In the rule book you have 5 scenarios to play and also 2 fan made are available in the net. Have tried all and I like them very much. I think you can find the rules free online - not too many pages to read and to decide for yourself.

I think that I will be using them with my other project as well.

In general - easy to learn rules and you have what to master once you learn them. Randomness in the way you get the cards and with the dice.

And at the end of this post, my all time favorite NCU, for my army is a must!!! She deserved to be among the first painted! Cercei Lannister - her special ability is to lower enemy moral which is very handy.

P.S. I am not big fan of the models as well, think that they could put more efforts in creating them.

I progress slowly with my Lannister army for CMON GOT.

I am ready with Sandor Clagane - The Hound. He is leading my Lannister halberds in battle.

Well, I don't paint much those days, but boy, I do play! Finally found game system that suits me well - CMON GOT.

Great game last night with my buddy Per!

He was leading pure Stark army with one Tully unit and Brynden Tullly, Eddard as general.

Mine was mixed Lannister/Clegane/Bolton with High Sparrow/Mountain that rides general.

Both forces around 80 points. Scenario - A Clash of Kings.

Starks took early lead, killing Mountain that rides (last wound was self-inflicted, rolling snake eyes on a Panic test of 3... :D ) and taking two of the 3 Objectives. So the beginning of Round 3 the result was 5 to 1 points for the Starks - future was bright for them.

But then they start to suffer, I managed to kill Eddard, Brynden Tullly, Great John, Summer and Gray wind and to take and hold all objectives on the table. Lost only Sandor.

After epic 4 hours battle, Staks left their piles of dead man on the battlefield and withdraw.

Lannister win - 12 to 8 points.

Hear me roar!!! 🦁🦁🦁

That sounds like a great game! I'd love to hear your impressions of the system. 4 hours seems like a long game compared to other reports I've read.

Hi mate,

I summed my impressions on the previous page - above the picture of Cercei Lannister.

Easy to learn system, especially by former Warhammer Battle players like me. Than it is hard to master, do not to forget that many other units and heroes are coming this month - that will give to the players more options. Also there are two relatively new fractions that I didn't faced yet - the Wildlings and the Night watch.

The integrated card system is also a nice touch and everything is quite balanced so far.

Game was longer because - 80 points is a lot, usually you see up to 50 points demo games, often 35-40. In this scenario all destroyed units come back like reinforcements, without their dead leaders - that's a lot Starks to kill. ;)

True that mate.

I was playing regularly this year but my painting modjo was gone...

Now I want to play at tournaments, so I will paint for sure my army - bonus points are important for the final placement.  :D

So, a new year started and I am back again to our beloved hobby.

First, here is a baggage mule I painted for my abandoned GoT project, I will try to resurrect it somehow.

And second, will try to create a new Nurgle based army for Dragon Rampant, starting with the trio from GW Wurmspat.

Here is the base of Ghulgoch, a joy to paint:

Baggage mules for the win! You can never have too big of a baggage train.

Despite photobucket being annoying, plenty of great brushwork on display. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I am happy with those painting jobs and will try to upgrade those projects at regular basis.

One day will have to replace the cracked photos, but they are way too many...
