Title: SandPort - rock outcrops WIP - 22.01.2019
Post by: Dr DeAth on October 09, 2014, 09:42:33 AM
My local club plays a lot of 15mm Gruntz Sci-Fi so I thought I'd paint up a few figures for it:

First up a bunch of military types (ZAS from Critical Mass Games)

Nice work, good to see other takes on 15mm scifi. How do you find Gruntz?

Nice work, good to see other takes on 15mm scifi. How do you find Gruntz?

I've played it a few times and the mechanisms work pretty well - not a big fan of IGO-UGO rules generally but that could be fixed with random cards or similar.  Overall a quick fun game that you can finish in an evening's gaming.

I'm curious about Gruntz as well, haven't purchased it yet. My understanding is that there's a card-based optional activation system in the main book?

Also just got back into 15mm SF in a small way, looking foward to painting some small-scale stuff again after five or six years of nothing but 28mm!

To be honest I don't own the rules yet, I've been playing with some friends at the local club and they are the ones that know the rules.  I have seen cards systems used with Gruntz and there is a set available from the website now I believe.

Yes, great painting. 15mm means hard work, I think. My tries always ended in unhappiness.

Really nice figures !

Small scale means especially diferent technic ;) It's not harder than painting 28mm minis. In fact, it can be easier or harder, depanding the technics you're using, and the result you want to achieve.

For instance, my "own" (nothing more than a mix of technics I found on internet to be honest) small scale (10 to 20mm) figure painting technic heavily depands on preliminary wet and dry brushes : you base coat and base highlight your minis using wet and dry brushes. You shade the minis using washes. You can almost paint entirely your small scale figures using wetbrushing, drybrushing and washes !  But of course, "classic" brush technics will give extra detail (that is where you gain or lose time and where your paintin skills can be used).

In fact this technic is even good enough for some of my masspainted 28mm figures (zombies, dungeon monsters horde) :)

I agree, it's the technique that makes it easy or hard.  I quickly abandoned my normal 28mm techniques on the 15s.

For the figures above I've started with a grey primer then blocked the entire figure with the main colour.  Then I highlight with a 'wet drybrush'. Once that's dry I apply a wash (GW ones are flavour of choice at present) and finally paint in the details. Varnish then base and job's done.

The robo security figures are Army Painter blue ink straight on the metal figure then a few bits of orange details and a black wash on the guns. Two coats of varnish and then based. Job done.

Yet again great work. Yes, painting 15s does require a different technique, but once you've got the hang of it, it gives some great results. Washes and high contrast highlights all seem to make the models 'ping'.

As a side question, where is the support mech from? I don't recognise it.

Is the laser armed version.

Started on some scenario objective markers today - a communication tower and a monitoring station.  Poor pics curtesy of my iPhone and crappy garage lighting:

They're stood on the new terrain boards which are also WIP.

Well I said it was occasional . . .

Finished a pair of Fire Support Drones for my Gruntz Drone army - made from GW necron parts. The little chap in the middle is a GW scarab turned round the right way, they form the bulk of the army, more pictures of them later.

Q: What does one do when a drone's beyond economic repair.
A: Strip out all the reusable parts, pack every inch of available space with explosive and turn it into a Detonator Drone

More GW Scarabs but this time with bits (legs, guns, domes etc) cut off and the plating scored and twisted to represent salvaged parts and battle damage.  Painted in the same way as the normal drones then washed in GW Corrosion with rust added once dry.

Thanks, glad you like them - here's some more, these are the not so shiny 'elite' drones.

I've got 8 squads of 8 drones done now, 64 in total. Next I'm working on some 'specialists' - conversions of the basic GW scarabs to give the squads some support weapons.

Stones from the garden, mounted on a polystyrene covered CD shaped to form a mound. Covered with the usual gloop and sand then painted, flocked and tufted.

Finished another terrain piece, a rocky outcrop - this is a test piece to get the colours and flock right before making a larger quantity of terrain.

If on the opposite side the mid panel rounded shapes were extruded rather than recessed it would allow the units to interlock and stack...

..maybe fate designed them that way!

Just finished a batch of rubbish skips.  These are from The Scene (http://thesceneuk.com/shop/skips/sk2010/ (http://thesceneuk.com/shop/skips/sk2010/)) and while they are listed for 20mm I think they work pretty well for 15mm.

Lettering is done with home made waterside transfers with a bit of overpainting.

Did a few simple conversions to some GZG techs to make a repair crew.  The 'broken' solar panel is from Mad Mecha Guy - I've removed a few of the cells and added some superglue soaked cotton as cabling.

The figures are going to be the basis of a 'lets get this fixed quick before something eats us' scenario.

Brilliant stuff as ever. What do you use as bases? They look very thin?

I make them out of tinned steel sheet using a punch like this:

A search on ebay will turn up a few different and relatively inexpensive ones.

Apart from being very thin and unobtrusive, they're also magnetic which helps with the storage. I buy cheap magnetic number plates from Amazon and line boxes with them so all the figures stick to the magnets and don't move about in transit;

(http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002PCA3MQ? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002PCA3MQ?))

As Von Trinkenessen says, Peter Pig also supplies thin metal bases although these are slightly thicker and are only available in a single size.

It's a possibility.

There's some work needed to move the internal supports so they don't show on the final model and the doors need turning through 90 degrees and then it will be ready for mass production.

I'll post here when that's done and if you're interested in having some I'm sure we can work something out.
Title: Re: Xenomorphs
Post by: Dr DeAth on March 29, 2015, 11:01:26 AM
Had a small game of Gruntz with Bullshot yesterday so thought I'd put up a small AAR - the terrain is still a bit of a WIP so excuse the pictures

SCENARIO:

A recent storm has caused damage on a remote outstation of SandPort and a group of technicians have been sent to fix the place up. There are 3 damaged items, a solar panel, a comms array and a power sub-station each of which have varying amounts of complexity and damage.  The techs have an APC to travel to the outstation, but none of them have been qualified on the turret weaponry so it's been disabled.  The techs consist of a Crew Chief, a Medic, 3 security guards, 5 techs and a repair droid.
Only the techs and the droid can effect repairs - the mechanism for which is to make a skill roll against the repair complexity, with successes reducing the damage until the item is fixed.

Meanwhile, the Fiendish Dr. Diabolikal has seen an opportunity to exploit; he's intending to raid the disabled outstation for parts for his next Fiendish creation.  He's hastily assembled a small force and is en-route to the outstation.  The force consists of Dr Diabolical, his two bodyguards Rigor and Mortis, an R4-T1E ('ratite') repair droid and a unit of cyborgs.

Initial setup
The game started with the techs arriving in the APC and Dr Diabolikal's arrival was to be determined by a 2D6 roll of 11+ (with +1 for each successive round)

Dave (Bullshot) won the initative and deployed - the techs made for the comms array and the rest of the team headed for the cover of the outstation (any figure on the outstation was deemed in hard cover)

Luck was with Dr Diabolikal and a roll of 11 meant his force arrived immediately

By grouping together the techs made short work of fixing the comms array (the most complex but least damaged structure)

Meanwhile the plucky little repair droid - or '#17' as he's referred to by the team - starts work on the power station (this is the least complex to repair but has the most damage)

The Fiendish creations advance to take up positions

Mortis takes cover in a rock outcrop and opens fire on the outpost

In the ensuing firefight Mortis kills one of the security guards, the remaining guards realise they should have brought bigger guns

(at this point it became apparent that the techs were unlikely to damage the light walkers so some adjustments were made to the weapon and defence factors)  "Look what I've found in the back of the APC - a box of plasma rifles!"

Having fixed the power sub-station, #17 and the techs work on the solar panel but seem to unaware of the approaching cyborgs

The cyborgs open fire and inflict heavy casualties on the techs while Rigor and Mortis pick off the remaining security guards and the crew chief. Things aren't looking good and the medic's morale waivers and he makes for the safety of the APC

Despite the incoming fire and casualties, the techs repair the solar panel and #17 switches to medical mode.  The droid patches up most of the techs, allowing them to retreat to the safety of the APC that has been reversed closer by the medic.  Unfortunately for #17 he takes a hit from Mortis's light plasma which blows him apart, however the retreating techs manage to gather most of his mechanical parts and circuits, so reassembly may be possible.

We called the game at this point, giving Bullshot the victory. It was an interesting scenario that needs some balancing out - more firepower for the techs (maybe a military escort) and less for Dr Diabolikal; also I need to finish the terrain so it looks better :)

Do it!  you know it makes sense - and they're so much faster to paint than those 28mm figs

Started work on a 4' x 4' terrain mat - the usual construction method of cloth (in this case a fleece blanket) covered in caulk and sand.  Just waiting for it to dry before painting.

Do you need to paint it? That looks a fairly good natural colour to go with!

Do you need to paint it? That looks a fairly good natural colour to go with!

I made a test piece a few months back to work out the colours for my sic-fi basing and to test the material and the mat's durability.

I've found that painting the mat gives it a more stable surface and traps the sand/grit in the paint. The unpainted mat shed its sand quite badly and was very harsh on the figures.  Painting it also has the benefit of all the terrain and figure bases matching the playing surface, something that I'm a bit OCD about :)

Image below shows the test piece with the test terrain items and some figures (excuse the quality, it was taken on a mobile).

The doors are from Mad Mecha Guy http://www.madmechaguy.co.uk/mmg-15mm-doorandgates.html (http://www.madmechaguy.co.uk/mmg-15mm-doorandgates.html)

The windows, fans and hatches in the blue resin are from Antenocitis Workshop (bought in blisters at Salute but can't find them on the website for some reason)

The small windows in grey are made by me using fimo and a small press and cutter that I made for the purpose

Got sidetracked from the buildings by plant pots -  I wanted some scatter terrain to provide cover and to add a bit of colour to Sandport so I made these test pieces.

Title: Re: Sandport

Lovely  :-* :-* :-*
Where are the vents from?

I made a master and a press mould and made them out of air-drying fimo. They were my first efforts and if I'm honest not that great - they distorted quite badly as they came out of the press mould.

I've now refined the process and have made a small press tool. I find this makes them more consistent as the cutter holds the fimo in shape and they don't have to be moved before they're baked.

I roll out Fimo to about 2 mm thick on a metal tray, press the square cutter into the fimo, put the press tool into the cutter and press the vents in, then peel the unwanted fimo from around the cutter before removing it and the press tool at the same time.  Then they get baked on the tray.

I've got some RTV rubber and some 2 part casting resin so I'm going to me making a mould as soon as Amazon deliver my mould release spray!

Thanks for all the feedback chaps - lots more to come hopefully.

The container has been lasercut, assembled and painted by the talented Mr Jimbibbly. He's done all the work, I just came up with the design  :)

Rumor has it that these are going to be available commercially in both 15mm and 28mm scale from www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk (http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk) soon(tm).  No doubt the 28mm version will be appearing in one of James' threads at some stage in the future.

Finished my Vaporators (Moisture Collector Units from Brigade Models). Nice models to paint, the 3d printing material takes washes and dry brushing well.  Top rods are brass wire added by me, an easy job as the models have a 'dimple' in the top which centres the pin drill perfectly.

Modular Junk - just finished a prototype for scatter terrain for my SandPort setting.

The idea is to have small pieces that work independently but also fit together to make larger terrain features.  Test piece uses PCB components (from Malamute's old printer) and bits from kinder toys as junk.  The crate is from Antenocities Workshop.

Finished Al's Speeder Repairs workshop, the second building for SandPort.

Blue foam construction with sand and PVA texturing.  Resin bits from Antenocities with home made printed signs.

I've left the interior plain but will come back to it later - need to make some more buildings first.

Why the hole in the top?

It's for the roof, didn't want the sand all sticking together as it dried.

Envious of the clean cuts you have achieved... any other trick than sharp blade, metal ruler and steady hand for the result? :)

I use a desktop hot wire cutter (rather than the hand held type), I fund it much easier than a knife and the adjustable guide helps achieve consistent thicknesses

I have one almost exactly like it from Proxxon bought from a local store

You should be able to get one in Finland, too, I think.

Not enough armour-plating and razor wire.
;)

Looking again, and not wishing to be picky (:D), lovely as they are, SandPort does appear to be a quite clean place... Did you consider heavier weathering Mark and decide against it? Or did you consciously go for the rather neat look?
(I only arx, cos the usual thing with such sci-fi locales is to show them as pretty dingy, grimy and run-down... )

Wasn't a conscious decision, more a practical one in that I want to build up a sizable spaceport in a short(ish) time and all the extra work will extend the time frame.

I plan to go back and add more detail when I have 15-20 bases so they will get more weathering. These are the 'old town' buildings so they do need to look more grungy.  I'm going to add some 'newer' designs for the other parts of SandPort.

Well, a Neb B at that scale would be 3 meters long so a slight reduction in scale might be appropriate.  A GR-75 'Rebel' Transport would only be 90cm long though.  You could have a game in one, with some thought.

I'm interested in seeing what you come up with for the Spaceport, since I want to build one or more of those, as well, in this scale.

One, fairly modern, upscale one, and perhaps one that is a bit more austere, like those on distant, backwater areas, or planets.

The fence is an HO model railway kit by Cornerstone which I got through Osborne Models in the UK.

I've tried to find it on the site again but it's not there, which is a bit odd as I only bought it a few weeks ago :(

Found some old Snapdragon resin crates at the back of a cupboard so I dusted them off and rebased them.

The paint job is probably 15 years old but they'll do nicely as containers from a crashed drop ship for a salvage scenario.

Wow! Nice job!

How do you paint your metal?

Grey primer,  base coat GW Ironbreaker, wash of GW Nuln Oil and then dry brush GW Runefang Steel.  Nothing complicated.  :)

Nice, I like it! Is GW Ironbreaker about the same colour as Boltgun metal? Runefang Steel = Mithril silver?

Ironbreaker is the same as Chainmail, not Boltgun metal.  Runfang is the same a Mithril - useful colour comparison chart here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart (http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart)

Finally finished the Scrapyard for SandPort.

This building took far longer than I expected due to all the work need on the scrap.  I've compromised slightly with the scrap by making it in removable modules rather than modelling it in place.  This allows me to used it as scatter terrain and to use the yard for other things (such as a compound), but as a result it's not very messy and looks very neat and tidy. It'll have to do for now, too many other buildings to make to spend any more time on it :)  Also, looking at the pictures now I think it could do with some more 'dirtying up'.

Posting this to give my self a kick up the arse and get on with the project.

I need to make some frontages for the terraced accommodation and cast them up so that I get a uniform 'pre-fab' appearance. In the meantime I got a bit distracted and ended up working on a landing pad.  Thanks to AndyM for the idea of using a food warming cover for the basis of the building

Not sure what the technical specification of it is, but I buy it from here http://shop.panelsystems.co.uk/craftfoam/modelling-foam/craft-foam-blue.html (http://shop.panelsystems.co.uk/craftfoam/modelling-foam/craft-foam-blue.html).  The build uses 10mm and 5mm thickness sheets.

I'm building SandPort for 15mm so it'll be a bit too big for X-Wing.  The Cloud Car in the photo is a Micro Machine Action Fleet model which looks just right for 15mm

Ah, yes, I know; what I meant was, the principles and materials (especially the plastic lid) could be used for some smaller scaled terrain as well.  :)

I was thinking along similar lines.
Having recently been lured to the Dark Side myself I was looking at playing X-Wing on my standard game board, which would work well for a desert scene, and some buildings similar to this would work well, I reckon.
(X-Wing is 1/270 by the way, so pretty much 6mm scale,......just in case you are tempted too.  ;))

Made a bit more progress on the landing pad.

I've painted the internal walls - poster paint dark grey directly onto the blue foam - it's got an interesting texture that looks like concrete to me so I don't want to spend time covering it with plaster/filler.
I then airbrushed successively lighter greys till I got the finish I was after then mixed a little brown in to the paint to airbrush the weathering around the bottom of the wall. Painted the fans and door with the airbrush to start with then finished with a normal brush and sponged on the chips. Mould patches and rust runs on the walls are thinned GW washes.

It's glued down now in preparation for the groundwork and the external walls getting the normal SandPort pva+sand coating before final painting.

Whilst waiting for various bits and pieces to dry, I tinkered about with some more bits for SandPort

First up a communication sphere - based on a christmas tree decoration that I picked up for 50p in B&Q's January sale.  It will end up on top of a tower or bunker and no doubt will be a scenario objective at some point:

Next up - baggage handler droids for the landing pad - part of a set of droids from 15mm.co.uk - the others will show up as maintenance droids to work on the shuttles that put in at the landing pad.

The droids are working out how to shift a pair of Jimbibbly's excellent star wars crates before the bulk shipment arrives (hint hint).

Finished painting the full set of droids:

IAF081 Taranis Runner Drones from theionage.com, great little models that come in two halves to allow an good variation of poses - easy to put together and a joy to paint.

I know they're sold as combat drones but I intend to use them as repair and maintenance drones in SandPort. I think the weapons will pass as welders/scanners/inspection lamps etc. and the two with claws will make excellent baggage handlers. I bought an extra 'claw' drone as the pack only contains the one and will probably get a few more that I can convert to carrying boxes etc.

Funny you should say that - watch this space and all will be revealed . . .  ;)

Lovely droids Mark: how do you do the paint chips: just flicks of colour?  8)

I have a bit of sponge foam (from a figure blister) glued to the end of a cocktail stick that I roll it in Vajello Hull Red paint till it's just 'damp'. Then I lightly dab on the figures to get the chips before the metals are then stippled over the hull red area using a brush.  I've found the sponge gives the best results, painting it on was to regular and flicking just got messy and to random as paint tends to chip on edges and exposed areas. That said I do use a brush on edges (see the crates in the previous picture).   I'll also use the GW technical rust paint to drybrush over the area and blend it in in some instances.

Completed a bit more junk modelling - a  Communications Sphere from a 50p plastic christmas tree bauble in B&Qs January sale. The pipework is styrene rod and the communication domes are plastic 'pearl' halves intended for costume jewellery.

It will probably end up on top of a building but for now I've just mounted it on a small platform

Repainted a Reaper Minis Great Worm pre-paint to fit in with the SandPort project

The entry in the Rough Guide to SandPort reads:

Sand Wurm: These subterranean worms have a nasty habit of burrowing under the older sectors of the star port and popping up to snack. Recent buildings have included worm mesh beneath the foundations and roads to prevent such incidents. Avoid at all costs.

Are you using Gruntz for this??

Yes, using Gruntz and treating characters as specialists.

I'm planning to start a series of linked games with a central core of characters (crew of a free trader) controlled by the player(s) who then complete jobs (the game scenario) for patrons; a bit like the Traveller RPG approach.  The Patron will put additional forces at the crew's disposal depending on the scenario.  I'm also looking to include some additional 'perks' based on some of the Traveller skills - electronics, computers, navigation etc.  These will be for the crew to give them a bit of extra characterisation, so the pilot and co-pilot will have Navigation, the ships doctor will have the medic perk etc.

The worm is part of a scenario I have in mind that sees the crew escorting an archeologist patron who is attempting to recover artefacts from a desert ruin. More of which later :)

Doing a character focused gruntz game might not be a bad idea. I had some trouble iwth the game due to having to throw 2d6 for each model in a group. I prefer FAD generally, much quicker combat resolutions.

I had the same reservations but just bought lots of different coloured pairs of D6, that way if I've got 8 figures in a group I roll 8 coloured pairs in a single roll which speeds things up.

I recently started reading through the Gruntz rules and like what I see.

Have you looked at the SpecOps supplement.  It is based around a force of 3-8 specialists.  Sounds like what you have in mind, but it gives some more variation to weapons.  Pistols can shoot twice in an activation for example.  Makes a reason to give them to your guys.

Great stuff by the way.  It is an inspiration to me.

Experiments with some speed painting on a few GZG figures I had in the lead pile.  Excluding the drying time between stages they took about 10 minutes a figure.

Not sure they stand up to photographic enlargement but they look fine on the table top

They look great. I've tried 3 schemes on those UNSC and the best on is the simplest - bright colour then ink wash. The details so fine it just doesn't stand up to rgular shading and highlighting, particularly on the legs.

I use waterproof PVA to stick the sand to the blue foam and UHU Por to glue the blue foam together. It's important not to use standard UHU as it melts the blue foam.

A few GZG figures in Hostile Environment Suits

And some crops for the bio-domes that I'm working on.  They're supposed to be succulent plants so they should be a bit shiny, but they may need a dusting of matt varnish to dull them down a bit.  They're some of the better plastic plants that I've found and work well for 15mm scale, pretty cheap on ebay too:  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191939799851 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191939799851)

This thread is so good - justbead the whole shebang again. I'm on a bit of a terrain kick at the mo - November is 'play some more games' month, I've promised myself - so focussing on terrain and this is all really inspirational.

Added some more scatter terrain, urban planters:

Made from the usual blue foam with sand coating.  Ground cover plants are homemade clump foliage and grass tufts with coloured sand added for flowers.  Green leafy plants from ebay as before.

They should add a nice touch of colour to the table whilst providing cover at the same time.

Can't believe it's been over two years since I updated this thread, is there a time limit on threadomancy?  :D

SandPort took a bit of a back seat while I worked on other projects, most of which came to nothing and a few which actually turned out ok (like my Beaverlick Falls Old West town http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=105875.0) (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=105875.0)) and I was never really happy with the colour scheme I chose for the setting, the sand/brown was a bit dreary, which is another reason my attention wandered.

However, some recent games with FFoL:Galactic Heroes with James' (OSHIROmodels) excellent Star Wars setup (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=107667.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=107667.0)) and the slow but steady purchasing of some Retro Sci-Fi figures re kindled my interest. Also a VSF on Mars project prompted me to make a Martian mat, which got me thinking that I could use the same colour palette for SandPort and, if I'm clever about it, use the same terrain for 15mm SandPort, 28mm VSF and 28mm Retro Sci-fi too.

Here goes . . .

Yes, pine cones that have been eaten by squirrels with some plastic aquarium plant added.  The plant has been 'dipped' in home made dip.

I have been attempting to persuade the local squirrel (singular) to chew
pine cones, but he just runs away up the tree. He has absolutely no
problem destroying the plastic bird feeders on a regular basis, but
not interested in my nuts, sorry cones.

While your original colour drabness was quite realistic (most of the ground in Iran I visited recently was exactly like that), and would make unique and consequent setting..

New colour palette is much more visually attractive :P

Title: Re: SandPort - resurrection and a change of colour - 18.01.2019
Post by: Dr DeAth on January 20, 2019, 07:21:37 PM
Yes,  I used it to fill the voids in my old west butte (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=105875.msg1428457#msg1428457 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=105875.msg1428457#msg1428457) and while I was doing that I noticed that odd blobs dried in an interesting form, so I played around with it.  On the butte I carved the excess off, but on the sci-fi hills I basically just blew the foam inside itself and let it mushroom up.

I use the foam with a gun, not the stuff that comes in a can, as it's easier to control. If you get it too high it will fall over, but I'm going to do some more with formers (cardboard tubes) to see what they turn out like.   It very light when cured but not too strong, but I think it'll stand the rigours of the tabletop.

Progress on the hills - experimenting with colours

Gave the foam a coating of the base colour used on the mat and then dry brushed with the mid tone and a grey. Once dried gave it a wash of burnt sienna and some streaks of thinned Payne's grey and a brown/purple mix.  Just waiting to see the final effect on the rock before finishing the base to match in with the mat
