Title: Arctic exploration (pics)
Post by: oxiana on August 27, 2008, 12:19:44 PM
I wasn't 100% certain where to post these pics, but this seems as good a place as any. Here's a selction of pics of my painted minis for playing in cold places...

Some heroic Arctic explorers, wondering what could have scared away their huskies:

Perhaps it was the Wendigo?

Summoned up by unfriendly Inuit:

Harpoons at the ready:

And the rest:

Enjoy - and don't forget to wrap up warmly!

And just in case you think the Inuit have it all their own way, they also have creatures of their own to deal with. It's a wild world out there on the ice!

Hmm... I'm still a novice at posting pictures. Can anyone please enlighten me as to why the last couple of pics on each post have come out looking squashed? They look fine if you click through onto Photobucket. Thanks.

They look fine to me - you just have to click on them to see the whole pic  ;)

Who makes the inuit, the wolves, and the walrus (nice minis!)?

OK, that's weird - now I've come back to the page, the pics look fine and not squashed at all. Obviously some sort of temporary rift in the fabric of reality or something. That happens to me a lot!

Most of the minis are Copplestone - the explorers and sledge, the Inuit hunters, the polar bear, walrus and husky. The wolves are Ral Partha, and the musk ox is from the HLBS Great White North range. The Inuit drummer and shaman are by Bear's Den. To be honest, the sculpts on those aren't fantastic but they painted up OK.

Kayaks are next. I've got some basla to carve, plus I've made a traditional storage rack, although it isn't painted yet. Then some markers - I have some seals from Mega Minis (I think), and will green stuff some bundles of furs, caribou antlers, etc.

Nice project!  :)

I second that.

I suggest also to use some polar animals and kayaks made by Nikolai in resin.
They are smaller in scale being 1:72, but some can be used, mainly the animals seals etc. You might save your time by using his kayaks.

Awesome stuff. I love everything about the collection. I really like the animation in those wolves too. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. :)

Really  nice stuff! I had to take an other coffee to warm me up after looking at your photos… or maybe it's because our two weeks of summer, here in Canada, are already gone?   lol

Again, really great work!  :-*

Superb! I particularly love the walrus and the polar bear, but those Ral Partha wolves turned out great as well!

Love those Figs  :-*
Every time i go mini shopping on the net I feel tempted to order some arctic adventurers. What will you be using these for? Are you going to make up some sort of a arctic board? Would like to see one  :D

Very, very nice one and all. Very inspiring (although I have just started selling off my own Arctic/Great White North/Yukon stuff).

You definately need to be sending Mr copplestone some money for one of his tracked explorers.

Be sure to show more as they are done.

Nice!
And your U-Boot is even nicer. I was toying around with that idea and might copy your style somewhere in the future. If that's ok with you?!
Pics definitly saved on my computer  8)

… or maybe it's because our two weeks of summer, here in Canada, are already gone?   lol

Nice, wasn't it!  lol  Actually, we're in the longest stretch of good weather we've had all year.  Over a week of sunny days, except for a brief shower on the weekend.  We're coming off the wettest summer on record, with 5 times the rain that's hit Vancouver, although I understand parts of Québec have had it worse than us! I have this picture of some poor island in the middle of the South Pacific going through its worst drought in years while we get its monsoons.

oxiana - nice figures! I've got some of those Ral Partha wolves buried somewhere, too.  Haven't thought about them in years, although I don't remember seeing the howling one.  Must also dig out my Pulp Figures 'Northland Adventurers' set one day!

Oh, and Calimero...Happy 400th, Ville de Québec.  Salut!

Those Ral Partha wolves really are great. I did quite a search to find some suitable minis, but lots of the wolf sculpts out there are very cartoonish or GW-on-steroids. Also, you often see them painted up in just  solid grey or black, when in real life their pelts are a lot more varied. More interesting to look at for my money and very quick to paint: just a couple of different washes and drybrushes and they were done in a trice! Ironically, it took ages to get a paint job I was happy with for the polar bear, and that thing is just meant to be white...

As for gaming? Well, when there's time I want to expand the collection a bit to increase the options. A Viking raiding party could place the action in Inuit Greenland (and Gripping Beast do a lovely Viking trading boat that would go a treat here), but I also fancy some Foundry mountain men and trappers to relocate the action elsewhere too. And then of course, Copplestone have just brought out that brilliant Snow Cat that's begging to be bought...
