Title: "X-Wing" repaints - Empire Inferno Squad
Post by: Agis on November 16, 2014, 09:11:36 AM
An SWTOR Liberator fighter. Shapeways design by Mels Minis.

The Liberator-class starfighter served as the primary defense against the Mk VI and Mk VII Imperial interceptors employed by the reconstituted Sith Empire during the Great Galactic War and the Cold War. (from: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Liberator-class_starfighter)

The fighter was used as a starting Screen pic for SWTOR Online game for their Galactic Starfighter Expansion.

I was amazed by the print quality  of the model. Mel has done a very fine Job!

Another repaint: This time the B-Wing, I love this design since swing SW VI!

I magnetised the base, cut the cockpit and rotated it be correctly fitted for the shown flight position.
Great little model!

And a Rebel group shot:

Thanks!
Not to keen on the design of the first fighter but a top paint job none the less  :)

The E-Wing - I LOVE it! Also because it is from one of my favorite expanded universe story lines: NJO vs Vong!  8)

Out of the hat, my most liked SW Rebel fighter designs would be:
B-Wing
E-Wing
Stealth X
X-Wing
Z-95

Sorry, I meant the Liberator. The E-wings isn't too bad as designs go.

My favs would be

B-wing
A-wing
Y-wing
Tie interceptor

With the rest in close behind  :)

cheers

Oh we're going there are we? :D

Twin Ion Engine Fighter (just because!).
Twin Ion Engine interceptor. (TIE on steriods).
B Wing (cause I was instrumental in securing this for the Rebellion on my humble PC).
Y Wing (grizzled, out dated but hard as nails).
X Wing (iconic)
Imperial shuttle. (Again folding wings).

Next?

Nice freighter, reminiscent of RobJedi's Falcon conversions.  Anyway, lovely paint work as usual Agis.  I've been tempted to buy some small scale spaceships from Shapeways but am leery of print quality.  But that first set of pics is promising..

The model is a very close (actually better) version of the XJ freighter from Star Wars The Old Republic!
see:

As far as Shapeway model go, I can only recommend them if you are willing to pay a bit more and always go for Frosted Ultra Detail. Every other material is not to my liking.
In addition you will need an Ultrasonic Cleaner to get rid of the strange oily fluid the models are coated.
After that all is fine!

More "X-Wing" related paints this week...

Star Wars - The Old Republic
(http://www.adpublishing.de/assets/images/OR_Liberator_and_Mk_VI_Interceptor.jpg)

Two SWTOR Sith Empire Mk VI Interceptors. Shapeways design by Mels Minis.
“The Mark VI Supremacy-class starfighter, also known as the ISF interceptor or simply the Mk VI interceptor, was a model of fighter used by the Sith Empire during the Great Galactic War.
The Empire utilized this model of starfighter during the attack on the Republic shipyards in the Sluis sector and the Battle of Alderaan. Darth Malgus also made use of these vessels during the Battle of Ziost and the Sacking of Coruscant. The Mark VI had minimal shielding and was very lightly armed.” from starwars.wikia

Star Wars - The New Jedi Order
“The Yuuzhan Vong ("Children of Yun-Yuuzhan", also called the Chosen Race, and sometimes incorrectly abbreviated to Vong, which implied that one was disowned by one's family and one's gods) were a sentient species which nearly destroyed the New Republic, and were responsible for the deaths of nearly 365 trillion sentients during their invasion of the galaxy.” Wookiepedia
For me the Vong story line was simply the best of the expanded universe so far. I know that many did not liked them and think that they are not fitting into the SW universe, for me they were a very believable villainous race.
Yuuzhan Vong Yorik-et aka a “Coralskipper” - Shapeways design by Mels Minis.

"The yorik-et, referred to as a coralskipper or skip by New Republic forces, was the Yuuzhan Vong version of a starfighter during their invasion of the galaxy.
The yorik-et was a bioship made from yorik coral, since the Yuuzhan Vong despised mechanical technology as an abomination. It was grown instead of manufactured so no two coralskippers looked alike. Despite this, every coralskipper shared some basic features, such as a dark canopy, and a triangular body. The coralskipper's pilot could communicate with the craft via a special mask called a cognition hood at the cockpit." from starwars.wikia

I could simply not resist the urge to do a small conversion. The wings are old plastic GW Dark Eldar jetbike parts covered in Milliput, giving a rough surface by poking in the Milliput with a sculpting tool. Best thing - the Vong are very good printed in WSF! The rough surface works fine since the Coralskippers should be rocklike...
So the two blue Skips are FUD while the brown conversion is based on a WSF print.

I diffinatley prefer the two Interceptors over the couple of Vong ships....but you know what they say....two Vongs don't  make a right! ;)

The repaints and ...paints are all superb, and I say that even though alternate ships don't interest me at all (they just never look right and some look like they're trying too hard - even ones from some of the games).

The end result though looks spectacular.  I almost gave in and picked up X-Wing on Black Friday but I held strong!

Thanks folks.

Well - all the expanded universe models are just an option.
The core SW XW game is IMO rock solid and the starter box is also very affordable - German Version with 3 pre-painted ships around 22,00 € at Amazon...

The game itself is also great fun, simple yet engaging fighter rules with a strong tournament Scene.
The amazing fan Support with Shapeways models and all the rest just rounds it all up for me.

I started out buying the German version in a small specialist store when I visited Flensburg with my family summer of '13, and was instantly hooked, and my daughters (then 10 and 7) were able to play the game after a 5-min intro, later buying another starter (English). For the sake of my gaming buddies, I have archived the German worded cards, though, as not all Danes are equally versed in that particular language.

Nice paint jobs with the new ones, have to confess that as an old school SW person I didn't even know these alternative types existed.

Btw, where can one find replacement and new flight stands suitable for X-Wing use?

I must say those coralskipper really look the part. I always preferred the more exotic Vong idea rather then re-doing the ideas from the movie over and over. (how many deathstar equivalents are there in the extended universe?)

Very nice painting and I'm glad to see someone is actually doing this.

Usually you hear the "you could always repaint them" comments but never actually see someone doing it.

So far I've steered away from X-Wing because painting and modelling is the part I really like and pre-paints just seem to kill all the fun in that.

And quite frankly I'm afraid if I repaint them I can't match the factory quality -- now that would be embarrassing, wouldn't it?

Hi again,  1st website update in 2015!

SWTOR Sith Fury Interceptor and Mk VI Interceptors - all by Mel’s Miniatures

SWTOR Imperial Fury Interceptor - the ship all Empire Force sensitive player eventually get in the MMORPG.
Shapeways design by Mel’s Minis.

“Featuring an advanced hyperdrive and state-of-the-art sub-light engines, the Fury is the most versatile starship in the Imperial fleet. Though initially designed for high-priority military missions, the Fury has become a favorite among Sith Lords and the latest models have been engineered accordingly. The Fury’s angular design combines the maneuverability of smaller Imperial fighters like the Interceptor with impressive armament that rivals some of the Empire’s larger military vessels.
The Fury also features a newly designed set of ‘strike foils’ that remain down for travel but can be expanded in short range combat to maximize the ship’s agility and range of firepower. On the interior, adjustments have been made to match to the luxury and aesthetics demanded by the Sith. No expenses have been spared.” from the SWTOR homepage. I played a game with the model using the Decimator rules for the Fury, worked nicely!

Originally I worked on more Wargods of Olympus minis! But then the new SW Ep VII trailer hit me and I was 17 again!

Time to finish Prince Xizors Viper, a T-70 X-Wing and a Stealth X.

Prince Xizors Star Viper

Keen observers have noticed the design differences of the Falcon and the X-Wing designs that are shown in the two Episode VII trailers. Even keener modelers have already created X-Wing models for them!
Shown above is the Incom T-70 X-Wing of Episode VII by Mels Minis. The T-70 X-wing fighter was a modern variation of the classic design X-wing starfighter used by the Resistance in their fight against the First Order, 30 years after the Battle of Endor.

One of the most prominent and iconic Fighter of the Legacy Era was the Stealth X! Mel did it again, a FANTASTC model of this little craft.

And as usual a LOT more pics on my website:

Well you shouldn't be so greedy and let all the NON-KEEN observers in on the little tidbits. Would only be fair. Don't want them to feel left out now do you? :-)

And as for the new additions to the fleet. As always you do a superb job. Very clean painting. Nice colors. The Viper looks fantastic. Andi  like the black how you did it on the Stealth-X as black is to some or more a hard color to pull off and highlight well not using hard edges. Kudos to you.

Based on the original X-Wing designs back from the 70s the round egines intake is split in the middle when in combat position.

From left to right,
Ep IV to VI X-Wing, Stealth X (expanded universe/ legends) and the new T-70 X-Wing (EP VII).

Not really, I looked up Mels card doc months ago and liked it, but I have not followed it...

But personally I just use existing stat cards and tweak them a bit.

For example for my SWTOR XJ Light Freighter I just use the Falcon stats, or the YT-2400 with a hull upgrade.
A good source is also Boardgamegeek.
IIRC there is also a points calculator around.

But I strongly recommend the stand in approach, less hassle with printing cards and convincing opponents...

Check on ebay as there's quite a few sellers who will take apart the box sets to sell the parts individually.

This week it is Boba time!
Slave-1 - the famous ship of the the equally infamous Boba Fett. Another great and highly detailed mini! I could not resist the temptation to also paint the Armada version, which is also very good for it’s tiny size.

After Boba I was really in the mood for another Scum and Villainy ship, this time the D-5 Mantis Patrolcraft from SWTOR!

The D5-Mantis Patrol Craft was a rare, top-of-the-line starship during the Cold War. It was meant to meet the demands of larger capital ships.

Built for combat, the rare, compact-framed D5-Mantis was a best-in-class patrol craft, designed to compete with—and meet the demands of—much larger starships, such as Interdictor-class cruisers.

The D5-Mantis Patrol Craft was created as the bounty hunter's class starship for the LucasArts video game Star Wars: The Old Republic. The above model is again a fan made design by Mel’s minis.

Title: Re: "X-Wing" repaints - First Order Transporter
Post by: Agis on March 20, 2016, 09:03:51 AM
The First Order Stormtrooper Transport is one of the very first vessel in the 7th Star Wars movie. The First Order’s stormtrooper transports – formally known as Atmospheric Assault Landers - AALs – are designed for the speedy delivery of up to 20 stormtroopers to the battlefield for ground operations. A pilot guides the transport to its drop zone from an elevated cockpit, while a gunner protects the no-frills 18m craft during its final approach.

The die cast model is the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens Black Series Titanium First Order Transporter“. It is not exactly 1/270 but fits X-Wing nice enough.

You can use the Transport perfectly for the “Mission 1: Political Escort” of the X-Wing Core Set. Use it as the shuttle and protect it with some TIEs!

Hi folks,
now that was a strange experience!  :o

Yesterday I noticed the following video from Beast of War:
I haven’t got the full “to pay for” membership for BoW, but got intrigued by the mention of IA.
I created a basic membership some month ago and posted some times like I do here.
When seeing my minis on the very first pic I decided to pay for a month and watched the video yesterday.
8 Min coverage for my work and website, nice! Thanks folks. :) :--]

Still, a very strange feeling to pay for a video coverage about oneself...  ;) ;)

The fun part started when the 3 folks speculated about my SWTOR minis.
They mixed up SWTOR (the current online game) with the old KotoR game.
They obviously did not read much of my websites content...  ;D ;)

It's a bit strange they didn't make contact with you or anything, before or after the video via your site. No 'hey we have a little vlog talking about your work here.' :/ That would be strange needing to pay to watch it.

More like 40K steals from Star Wars, which has always been pretty daring about making ships with a hard-edged industrial look and little streamlining.

I found some time to paint some more Clone Wars X-Wing fighter.

I am one of the few old SW fans that also enjoyed Star Wars I , II, III. So I always waited for some ships for this era. Once FFG brought out the ARC 170, I bought some back market ships to flesh out both sides of the civil war.

Thirded!  :D

Really nice paintjobs, as usual.

I have collected a large amount of WotC Droid fighters, a Sheathipede shuttle and even a Kazon Fighter model kit for use as a Huge ship, to bring the Trade Federation to the tabletop as a complete, playable faction.

Made dozens of cards and rules, which have seen many, many revisions, but I'm pretty confident the entire faction is ready for fielding. I "only" have to repaint the entire fleet, but your Vulture Droid is a most welcome inspiration!

Great stuff; keep 'em coming. One of these days I'm going to have to bite the bullet, sit down and take pictures of my entire repainted X-Wing fleet (nearing 100 ships by now... ::) )...

I have an XLS file which holds all the stats and rules. It's from there that I then make the cards.

If you're interested, I can send it to you. I'm about halfway through the cards at this point, but due to recalibrations to the rules, some older cards need adjusting again... ::)

I'd love to hear your input, before I release the entire lot to the world... :)

Back to Clone Wars (again)!

Hyena-class bombers, also known as Hyena bomber droids, were droid starfighters designed for heavy ordnance bombing runs. Based on vulture droid designs, hyena bombers had wider and sturdier hulls with huge wings to gain stability during flight. Like vulture droids, it could transform its shape into walking mode. These were used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, against the Republic forces during the Clone Wars.

I played some X-Wing second edition lately and started with some additional re paints:
Inferno Squad TIEs and a TIE/D Defender

Inferno Squad, also known as Inferno Squadron, was commissioned after the Alliance to Restore the Republic scored its first major victory when they stole the plans to the Death Star during the Battle of Scarif, and ultimately destroyed the battle station during the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY. Inferno Squad, consisting of Captain Iden Versio and agents Gideon Hask, Seyn Marana and Del Meeko, were tasked with infiltrating and ultimately destroying the Partisans, an extremist group that was led by resistance fighter Saw Gerrera before his death.

The TIE/D Defender, commonly known as the TIE Defender or T/D, was a high-performance TIE Series starfighter developed for the Imperial Navy by Sienar Fleet Systems in a project overseen by Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin shortly before the Battle of Endor. Representing a shift in starfighter design from previous TIE models, the ship featured a hyperdrive as well as deflector shields to allow it to operate independently of Imperial capital ships. The ship's speed and agility, combined with its arsenal of four laser cannons, two ion cannons, two warhead launchers and an optional tractor beam projector made it arguably the most advanced starfighter available at the time.
