Title: Nevyens Greek, Romans and anything else Ancient Painting Blog
Post by: Nevyen on November 17, 2014, 12:16:49 PM
Some of you may have seen my thread on the Medieval section on my vikings and Saxons..... well the madness there continues but i have begun a new adventure into the ancient Greek warfare now as well.

I hope to build first a Athenian Army and then a Spartan army.

Here is the 1st 6 models of the Athenians

Exact same madness has happened to me in reverse. I started with the Hoplites, now the Vikings and Saxons have popped up! I thought my Hopites were pretty good till I saw these, are they transfers or hand painted decorations, on the shield aprons?

Very nice looking paint job

One thought - very few (if any) battles were purely Athenian v Spartan - alllies were normally presenent so you may wish to broaden your armies to include this
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: Nevyen on November 25, 2014, 07:48:30 AM
Yep aware of that - but at this stage I am camping these are Athenian and Spartan for my own thinking - it will not mean there is no inclusion of allies for both sides.  Thanks for the feedback :)

What I need to work out is what really differentiates hoplites from city states aside from the obvious aspects of spartans and thebans.

Well here is the 1st unit completed.  The second unit has been built and will be undercoated but I have 10 Saxon Fryd and 12 Wotr Archers to get done next.

Really happy with the outcome and I think i have improved the shield application with the second lot.

More to come I really enjoy painting these guys and have in my minds eye a huge army:)

Fantastic looking figures. What rules are you planning on using?
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: Nevyen on December 12, 2014, 12:05:52 AM
Thanks again for the kind comments. The bluetac method works a treat, thank-you for pointing me in that direction!

As for rules as per my dark ages project Hail Caeser is the rule set of choice.  Our group cuts down the unit number by hald but keeps the frontage 120mm.

So i have roughly 4-5 more units for a division plus skirmishers.
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: 1ngram on December 12, 2014, 01:41:51 PM
MicroSol does the job perfectly.  In fact if you are as belt and braces man you can use both MicroSet and MicroSol.  After gloss varnishing the surface put the former on with a brush.  Then apply the transfer.  While everything is still wet apply the latter.  It will dissolve the carrier film.  Simply brush the remaining transfer into position.  The stuff isn't cheap but its been a mainstay of aircraft and tank modelling for years.
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: Nevyen on December 12, 2014, 11:22:09 PM
Thanks 1ngram but LBM transfers are different from other transfers as they have an adhesive side that allows the transfer to stick to the model. I use that approach as you suggested for all other types of transfers but with LBM ones it does not work as well i have found.

Lovely job, these will look spectacular en masse. I have a vague memory that the shield aprons are something only used by the Ionian Greeks, but I wouldn't let that stop me.
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: Nevyen on December 23, 2014, 11:25:36 PM
Odd - they come with the Athenian Greek Box set, and from what i have read they don't seem to be only specific to Ionian greeks.

But ill look into it.

I'm not overly fussed I like the models.

A Work in Progress Shot of the next unit. 3 Models to do and then the basing.

I aim to have 4 units to a division for Hail Caesar plus peltasts and archers/slingers.

2 units will be with the spears at rest while 2 will be advancing spears at attack.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I have found that you can mix some of the Foundry line in with the victrix and if you use the plastic shields it will give you a few more options for poses as they mix quiet well.

Anyway I hope to have another 56 or some models painted by Jan next year when we put a game on at cancon.  Will post more as I paint :)

Especially I like the bronze colors. Very well done!  :)

They do look great.
So tempted myself. I have a box of Victrix Greeks... Only ever made up and painted one...  :?

But one day... Just a small skirmish collection for 7th Voyage or something similar  :)

Mixing the Foundry in but using Victrix spears and shields is very successful, they fit right in.  I'm curious about the priming, is that a white spray over grey or black?
Title: Re: Athenian Army for the Peloponnesian War
Post by: Nevyen on August 22, 2015, 10:59:32 AM
Thank Ragnar :)  If you make to Berwick over the next few months should be on the table there:)

Bigredbat, The primer is Black then Grey to begin shading, its subtle but it adds a depth to the colors i find.  So its a two stage process, and yeah the Shields and Spears work perfectly.

Ive been looking at different wars I could potentially use this collection in and the 1st and 2nd Greek Punic Wars are an option, which means I can also look to build an army of early Carthaginians.  The more I read the more options there are, It really is an awesome period.

These look great.whenever I see these dioramic bases especially when they're decorated with casualties or discarded equipment, I always regret that I have all my figures individually based for skirmish games. They work great for skirmish games but movement trays just don't look as good as these themed bases for larger battle games. Thanks for sharing

New Update

Another Command Base done-  so that's a Army Command and 2 Sub Generals also a WIP for the first of  Few unarmored Hoplites. On another note I have been reading about the Corinthian War and also the rise of Thebes.

Thinking of make the project more focused on the Battle of Coronea.  Pretty much has all the main protagonists as well as bad blood between the Thebans and the Spartans.

More on this down the track

Cheers

Here we have the 7th unit of Hoplites.  8th is being built and about ready to be undercoated.

I have been looking at options and poses to make a 3rd rank for all the units as I think 3 ranks will give a better look for Phalanx formations etc.  Progress to Cancon is now well underway and I have plans to paint up to units of Peltast as well.

I have re-tasked this project also for building up the opposing armies from the second battle of Coronea, Ill have a little more on the scope for that in the next update.  What it does mean is that I will be doing Spartans and thebans down the track :)

Thanks Mithridates :)  the game at cancon will be geeks and persians and will be on a very large scale considering the people involved :)  My Greek contingent will form part of a large alliance to stop the Persian menace,  After that Im going to push on with Coronea Myself and might rope a few of the lads in to playing it.

This is a group shot of the work done so far, Im slowly putting together army lists as well to flesh out the project.

So after a bit of a distance between posts.

I have finished my 8th unit of Hoplites but decided that 3 ranks looks better than 2 so im now in the progress of going back and adding in the now in the progress of adding a 3rd rank to existing units.  So yeah ... more work but I really do think it looks better.

I have also looked at how I can arrange the bases for making a larger units and the last few pictures show that.

Terrific painting and basing, as usual! The third rank does add a lot of 'depth' to the unit.  ;)

Thanks all , and Scott I agree -  the one thing with 2 ranks is that it does not convey a mass of troops as much as 3 or 4 ranks does- It also allows me to do a few interesting things such this little scene im doing for the next unit.

So its extra work and I am not increasing the unit count but I am allot happier with the look :)

I love the work you've done, and especially your commitment to the artfulness, even when it doesn't increase the *size* of your army as defined by the rules.

Looking forward to seeing more!

The game looked very good in the flesh.  Stopped by briefly on the Monday to see how the Persians were coping.

Very impressive to see so many massed Greeks and Sparabara - shame the Persians do not really stand any chance of success in a frontal toe to toe clash.   Their only hope is to disrupt the Greek formations with their shooting and Hail Caesar makes that hard (as it was historically).

Thanks Slayer, very kind I hope you get enjoyment out of the period and have fun building your Greek army

Also here is a WIP for the Triarii - so far really enjoying the Victrix Kit and mixing with Aventine has worked so far, also have a few select foundry miniatures on their way to play with.

The Unit is done and I'm looking to the next unit of Triarii, depending on that goes might keep going with the Romans into April but trying not to get ahead of myself.  I am also messing around with a black vs grey background here and interested in thoughts on what's better.

Another fabulous entry! You're really going strong into Antiquity by the looks of it. :)

Regarding backdrops: A dark or multicoloured one creates a more 'dramatic' atmosphere with lots of contrast, whereas a white or plain background is great for a clean and 'sober' presentation. I like both approaches, so cheat a bit by using a slightly structured gradient.

They look excellent.  I hadn't thought of combining Victrix and Aventine models in the same unit, despite having both in my collection.  I might well try it out.

As for the background, I like the dark gray better, if that is any use.

Top painting as always from your good self. Quick question, what is your flesh tone paint that you use. Also what varnish do you use? As in shiny first then matt to finish off.

I see you are using a different frontage for the Romans. Are you using Hail Caesar or some other rules where such things are not so important?

I am using a scaled version of HC-  the group I game with scaled down frontages as we only play multiplayer games.... actually have not done a head to head in years. so to fit more players and commands in we scale it down.

therefore- standard size is 120mm and small is 80mm - depth wise that is left up to the individual I move between 60mm for 2 ranks and 80mm for 3 ranks.

Hope that help :)

It does. Redefining a standard unit (and restricting the silly and extremely frequent triple moves) makes the game far more playable. After all we don't all have 40000 figures and a games table 16' x 10' which seems the size that the game was designed for.

We have been using Impetus units and calling them "standard" - works a treat.

I don't always play with 1600 or so minis.  ;-)   If you ever pop round to the BigRedBatCave for a game the most you'd encounter would be 5-600.  My rules are designed to work on a 6x4 table with 12cm elements, as well as with the mega battles; most armies at this scale only have 100-200 minis.

That said, I am givng serious thought towards rebasing my Polybians as opponents for the recent pikes.  I'm thinking of basing 7-8 hastati along with 3-4 velites together on the same 10cm wide, 8cm deep base. The velites would be in front and to the right of the hastati. 10 such units would form the front line of the legion, representing maniples. Behind them would be principes (with some velites), each on the right of a similar sized base so as to cover the gaps in the front line. Units of 8 triarii would be on a much shallower base to the rear, formed in a single rank.

Essentially the hastati and associated velites would act as a single unit with both javelin and melee capability, as would the principes/velites. There would be a "line command" rule permitting all of the hastati or all of the principes to fall back to the rear of the legion.

A legion on this scale would be around 250 minis, and a consular army 1K, so this definitely wouldn't be one for home!

Best, Simon

Oh ok - I don't and will now get it - latest issue?

Read and well that does put a spin on things, I think from a gaming point of view it actually makes sense, and to be honest I have had a tough time thinking through how the assumed line relief would work practically.

Hope it gets some traction academically.

So after a long month of illness and family concerns I finally got round to finishing the 3rd unit in this project.  I took a line of adding a little narrative with the dead guy and the positioning of the centurion.

I also took some group shots, one in the traditional arrayment of the maniple system and one more inline with recent suggestions from slingshot.

Also a general group shot. So far 40 models in roughly 3 months is a good outcome and I have on the table the next triarii.

Great job on these guys - you are quite right about Victrix and the subtle differences you can achieve.   Particularly like the grizzled veteran officer in the centre, does he need some grey hairs (perhaps)?

Hi all,

It has been a long time since my last update.  Slowly slowly working on the project and I have just finished another unit.

(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/adams25/2016-08-29%2020.35.33_zps9ongzxqx.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/adams25/media/2016-08-29%2020.35.33_zps9ongzxqx.jpg.html)

So two shots of the latest unit and a family picture of what is painted so far.  More to come over the next few months.

Cheers JP

Luvverly work!  :)

Nice grime on the shields - and good to see that you have covered up some of the damage on the shield stickers to create more diversity!

I ordered 2 custom sheets of the same Viking shield sticker motive form LMBS and was delighted to get them offered without the weathering - so I can apply battle damage and grime myself.

Hey Nevyen,

Can I ask - on (p10) of this thread you mix what appear to be the Victrix Mercenary peltast box with some other Thracians figures with cloak and 'cap'...are those extras Foundry Thracians?

We here are looking at doing Hoplites 3-ranks deep like yours...the mix of Foundry and Victrix you have done looks like it will work very well...I'm trying to get away from the 'all arm thrusting' look of the Victrix figures.

Also, are you using LBMS decals for the shields?

Lastly, do you have a source to buy Victix shields and spears to re-equip the Foundry figures - I'd like to do the same.

Cheers

Happy W

Hi Happy,

Yes they are Foundry Thracians - I like the models and wanted something that would define the unit as Thracian.

I do use LBM Shields as to the Shields and Spears -  I was able to secure a very large number of box set cheaply that as allowed me to substitute shields and spears. Probably not economically something you can replicate but thats how i did it.

Thanks JP,

Info much appreciated.

I think I might look at putting together units much as you have done...I think the mixing of Foundry and Victrix might be the solution.

By the way - your LBM shield transfers look like a perfect round cut along the edge...the best I have seen. Are these hand cut out or do you have a 'tool' to give you a perfect rond edge?

Thanks again.

Cheers

Happy W

So today's update 1st Unit of the Allied Legion.

Allot less uniform and a mix of shields etc.  Probably a little OTT but i enjoyed the process, will be a little more sedate with the other 4 units in this legion.

Hi Garry, Yes another unit - pretty much my standard operating procedure these days, still takes some thought as to which models are mixed in etc.  Also starting to mix in some more eventide shields as well to break up the shield uniformity a bit more.  Variation in hight and slight variations in equipment in my mind make sense, equipping such large numbers of men, general uniformity in appearance would be hard to achieve and i would say the weapons and shields would as much as one could expect.

Well another Year's End Approach's.

I think by my reckoning I have painted about 150 Miniatures this year.

Final Completed unit for the romans this Year is a unit Allied Italian Spearmen/Triarii
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/adams25/2016-12-28%2020.27.25_zpsiwtcmesk.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/adams25/media/2016-12-28%2020.27.25_zpsiwtcmesk.jpg.html)

I also finally got a tripod a new backdrop and started using Adobe Lightroom for Mobile phones.

So I retook photo's of all the romans from this year. I know a rehash of previous work but I believe they look better with the the new approach. I hope to have completed in the first week of the new Year a unit of Roman Cavalry.

Good to see them again - particularly liked the Allied Triarii.   Might use some of the ideas for my next lot of Aventine Etruscans.   The basing of the velites is also interesting.   I am now basing my light infantry/skirmishers 2 to a 40mm square base.  Suitable for Hail Caesar, Command & Colours as well as Art de la Guerre.

Painting of all these guys is first class.  Look forward to the cavalry.

Great cavalry!

I really like the idea of using the plastic spears - bent metal spears rarely get 100% straightened.

I also like the basing, sometimes I find it difficult to blend 2 or more different tufts, but you did it very well.

Hi All,

Its been a while but here is the army at nearly the half way point -  More Cavalry and more Light infantry plus a few more command stands, will see it at the half way point for a 4 legion army.   Im still thinking about what allied formations I want to add in aside from Celts.

Well it’s been a while... even got a warning that its been 120 days since a post !!!

In that time a bit has been going on.  But Notably more Romans of which I’ll post some pics tonight and few more tomorrow

First up some of the completed legions.

The white legion - First one to be completed

The Allied Iatalin Ala -  The blue legion for all purposes - really like the way these guys came out.

The Cavalry Division -  This was a long process - painting a cav unit at the end of each legion.

The General in all his glory - I enjoyed painting this

Some shots of them in battle
(https://i.imgur.com/RVh1YLp.jpg)

Ill put up the photo of the red legion tomorrow - need to edit before i put it up. The 4th legion is underway and of course more cavalry as well - and I’m planning to do a Ala of Italian troop less legion like.

Anyway glad to see Lead Adventure in good hands and ill get more photo’s up soon.

Cheers

I intend to play and use the TTS rules but I and the Club i play with use HC rules.

Just brilliant, did you go with a yellow base for the shields to get them colour? If so works well.

Title: Re: Nevyens Greek, Romans and anything else Ancient Painting Blog
Post by: Nevyen on March 03, 2018, 08:16:32 PM
Hi Keith,

Just a white undercoat. 2-3 layers with time allowed to dry per coat and a grey undercoat.  Allows the colours to come out.  If i want to darken the colour of the shield i apply a layer of wash usually GW agrax earth shade.

I have also found that the decals made for Victrix shields work on your republican shields with just a little paint work.

Cheers
