Title: Paranormal Investigators HQ (Final Pictures p20)
Post by: Andym on November 30, 2014, 09:12:01 PM
Following on from Crooked Dice releasing their Paranormal Investigator models and me building and painting Ecto 7, I've been asked to build a couple of wee terrain pieces for a board for them.

Original building....

Still WIP.....

What's across the street?
Are you doing a whole board or just buildings?

I've got an elevated railway station to build. Possibly along the full side. Most of it is just going to be girders and stuff, but theres going to be an arch/tunnel type thing at one side that'll have a wee taste of Grand Central Station styling. We're still trying to work out if the stairs up to the platform should be off to one side or in the middle.......

No, on this occasion, they're all going to be closed off mate! Sorry! I've got a couple of other wee bits still to build that'll hopefully make it up for you though!

Did you just scribe the pavement and cracks into thin MDF?  A close up of that would be nice, along with the street furniture.

Hopefully not Colin.  There's a removable bit to extend it to the board edge thats still to be built.

S'very good.  ;D

Cheers Kev!

I've been working on another base board tonight. This one is for this project as opposed to the one I've been using from my wee 2000AD project, that I've been using  to take photos on. Here's a pic of that halfway through being inscribed. Its on 6mm MDF. The pavements sidewalks for the buildings are on 3mm hardboard. The technique seems to work for both materials!

Remember children....drink responsibly!  ;)

I'm just trying out a colour scheme for the concrete. Not the best picture I'm afraid! Also I've built a park entrance for the corner of the board. This piece just sits on top of one of the pavements so it doesn't need to be part of the board.

This is more epic than fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes. The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!  :D

I have tried the MDF carving and thought everything looked fine before I started painting the board… so what's your secret color recipe???  :)

I don't know if anybody else does it this way, but if you break what ever your trying to do into the smallest constituent parts in yiur head and take it small bit at a time, eventually all the small parts make up your one whole item.

This is the finished HQ building for the board. I've yried to make it look more 'used' by putting rubbish on it....

Looks really amazing! Thank you for the work in progress shots of the street inscribing - was curious, what tool you used to score the mdf and hardboard?

Having just done a shoddy job myself on something similar with a dremel, I'm impressed by the quality and consistency of the linework.
Title: Re: Paranormal Investigators HQ(Main Building Finished 24/1)

Zacharyw- I use these mate.

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150126_072605_zpsiixzpsot.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150126_072605_zpsiixzpsot.jpg.html)

it's also maybe worth drawing your concrete pattern out first. Then its just a case of scoring those lines with the sculpting tool, repeatedly. Once there's a slight groove you can open that up by using both hands on the scuplting tool(you don't need the steel rule anymore, the grooves will guide you) to add a little more weight.

Fantastic builds. What's even more impressive is that when you look closely (the windows on the main doors of the HQ, the detailing under the bridge of the elevated train) it's clear that it must have taken even longer to build than we could possibly imagine - either that, or, you know, you have alien super-powers. I want to build an urban board, and I would love for it to have this level of detail, but I've already accepted that I'm going to have to cut corners. You haven't (or don't appear to have done so!), which adds a whole other level to this.

I can't wait to see it painted - in part, because I really want to know how you tackle the tricky bits so that I know what to do when I eventually build and paint my own board!

Astounding work as always!  :o

I'm working on some buildings with stairs and I'm curious what you used. Are the stairs themselves custom built or they prebuilt styrene one pieces? I picked up Plastruct O scale and G scale and I am looking for something in between like what you have. What brand are they? Plastruct, Evergreen, something else? Are they 1:48? Sorry for so many questions. Your pics are just in time for me to continue on my own project.

Thanks Steve! In answer to your question mate....no, I don't like cutting plastic card, but couldnt think if any other way of doing it! ::)

Insanely cool  :o

Will you provide the board with proper era cars as well?

I'm supposed to be getting a couple of the CD transit vans to paint up. Ones going to be done in the colours of Walter Pecks team. (The guy that trys to shut down the Ghostbusters).

@Hawkeye- I'm going to cheat! ;)

The cafe window is going to be a photo, cut to size, glued in and covered in ckear plastic. I'm sure it was Pappa Midnight that did it on his Victorian shop builds and it looks crackin!

I'm afraid they're all scratched mate! I found the plastic sheet from Antenocities soft and easy to cut/work with!

Holy crap! You're a machine then! I tried making just one single short flight of stairs in plasticard and gave up. It was the wonkiest thing I've ever built. I think I found the right size for my 40k and sci fi terrain now. I initially used Plastruct O (1:48 scale), and it was very accurately scaled for 28mm...but it "looked" small with my 40k stuff. I ordered a set of their 1:32 stairs and I think while technically too large to be in true scale, they are big enough that miniature bases slot between the steps so they can stand on the stairs and they aren't so big as to look like they were made for giants.

They might be good if you want to save time next project  :)

The boxes are actually light card Doc! You might be able to maje them more used looking by wetting them a wee bit,  then scrunching them slightly in the corners. I could see that giving a really nice beat up look!

Very nice. Liking that path.

Is this removable to make transport easier, or to have a swappable module? If the latter, what's the alternate option for that corner?

The path, trees and walls are one piece and the pavement underneath a separate piece that sits on. Alternative options will be hot dog stands or a bus stop.

I'm afraid this one isn't for BLAM mate, unless Karl manages to bring it along. This ine should be at Salute though.

Thanks again gents! :D

How to build a sign...

Take a bit of plastic card for your base and using some scraps of plastic card and green stuff, make an original....

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150213_185637_zpseywglpev.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150213_185637_zpseywglpev.jpg.html)

Take a big blob of GS and make sure yiu keep it warm. A hair dryer may help. Coat the original in a light covering of washing up liquid (this acts as a release agent once its all cured). Press your warm GS blob over the original and allow it time to cure ....

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150215_092043_zpspkp5qzzo.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150215_092043_zpspkp5qzzo.jpg.html)

Once dry, gently peel away the mould. Make another blob of GS(keeping it warm again. This will make it take the details of the mould) better and press it into your mould. Allow it to cure again for 4 hours before removing...

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20150215_085523_zpsrcpqu4oo.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150215_085523_zpsrcpqu4oo.jpg.html)

Then its just a case of gluing the two sides back to back, add a couple of wee bits of plastic tube and hey presto, one sign...

Guys, Guys, its ok! I've tried to cater for everyones tastes! Thats supposed to be chopped onions beside the knife on the chopping board and the two bottles beside the umbrella stand will be painted to be mustard and ketchup! Hot dawg!! Oh, I mean, bus stop.  :D

Lovely little construction Andy.

I don't think you need rubbish around it. The distress on the structure (flaking paint/weather staining etc.) should be enough.

You don't want to overdo these things. Less is more and all that...  ;)

I use glossy magazine cover to give me rivets on my bridge. Basically you press a ball point pen into the reverse side.

Oh dear.  :o

I've just spotted this thread and the gold it contains inside. Andy it's a CRACKING build!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Nice junction box and traffic light on the railway. 8)

I know your delema with uncertainty over fixing terrain to the base or leaving them free. I constantly question myself with that. More often than not I end up fixing it down to make it sturdier and fit better in situ rather than having a stack of bases on top of each other. Any tips from your process?

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks Fram! With your help we've caught that early enough that I could smooth that out!! Cheers mate!! Obviously wine and sculpting don't mix!! ;)

Stunning. How'd you make the lettering? Surely you didn't cut out each one in plasticard?

Oh god no!! Slaters do plastic card lettering. This is the 3mm high stuff.

Constable- I tend to go with what looks better mate. Usually I do like sticking stuff down and adding grass or litter or something. The thing is that I've been asked to make that piece of sidewalk a bit versatile,  so it can be changed about.

They're bits of plastic pipe wrapped with corrugated paper you gave me when I made my Nelsons Column. I think its the same stuff you used for your pillars for your underwater temple.

Cheers guys! :) I'm afraid there's no real trick to it. There is a few tips I can give though. 1.Make sure you use reference materials as a guide. I found this pic of a New York taxi I used and copied that. ....

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/vintageyellowNewYorktaxicabseendrivingQaP5UAxcJe-l_zps5qcptjpn.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/vintageyellowNewYorktaxicabseendrivingQaP5UAxcJe-l_zps5qcptjpn.jpg.html)

....2. I've put a couple of dark glazes along the bottom half of the windows. 3.Put a pure white dot to the top right of the screen. I do the same when I paint gems/lights. 4. I think framing it all in black helps too.

Thanks very much for the nice comments gents!! :D

This is the last wee bit to be built for this. I'm nearly done with it all. This is supposed to be a New York newsstand. ..

ive also raised the board up to make it more meaty. I used 45mm wide pine batons and screwed them through the mdf base and added a hardboard bottom to the whole thing....

Excellent.

I don't think the bits would cast mate. Too many gaps! You'd need to build them with a mind to casting later.

I've finished the main HQ building now. I've left the sign removable so that it doesn't always need to be a paranormal investigators.

I love the range ruler idea too, I might have to unashamedly nick that, if you don't mind?

I look forward to seeing a shot of the table with all the terrain on it, it really is something special. The only one thing wrong with it being that it isn't mine..  :(

How would you fix it?

That's the proton rays finished now as well. I'm not getting the light tonight, but I'll try and get some comprehensive shots of the board later.

It's a great idea, but I noticed two aspects which "irk" me a bit.

First, the spirits/spectres/ethereal wotsits appear a bit too "solid". You might try lightening up their blue areas with some stippling, to make them appear more "cloudy" or "vapoury" (bit of a Baldrick-y, linguistically-challenged moment here, but I hope you catch my drift). The other option might have been to make some casts of those in clear resin, then tint it using various turquoise and blues.

Second, I think the explosion itself could have benefitted by using "deepened" rather than "darkened" colour tones on the top areas. That is to say, it appears to me you used a dark grey or black for the tops? Various blue hues of increasingly deeper shades (e.g. start with a light turquoise, then add increasing amounts of ultramarine and Prussian blue, maybe some midnight blue tones as a finish. My impression is that the dark areas swallow too much light and leave it dull rather than earily-glowing.

Apart from that, magnificent work all round, and those proton ray markers are genius. I'll probably shamelessly steal... erm, adapt that idea for my Daleks.

The reactor explosion looks good as is, but the thick proton beams look a bit curvier and need thin streamers of jagged blue lightening around them if you're going for the classic style.

Still hate you though!   :P

Thanks for the feedback Chris!

I think it's something I need to look into. Casting that is. That probably would've been the perfect way to do it. I'm not sure the stippling would have made too much of a difference.  I think we just expect ghosts to be see-through!

I think the thing with the explosuon itself may be more to do with the clump I used! It doesn't look like smoke.  It's not dynamic enough and isn't the shape I think you'd get! :?

The reactor explosion looks good as is, but the thick proton beams look a bit curvier and need thin streamers of jagged blue lightening around them if you're going for the classic style.

Still hate you though!   :P

That queue is getting bigger!!  :o

Yeah, I think for anybody else trying this, smaller filaments would make it more realistic! It's going to be a demo table though so it might be a tad too fragile mate?

Thanks guys for all your help and input on this, but that's me now finished this wee project.

It's so, so beautiful!

The proton beams and explosion look most effective from a distance on the board - particularly the 'splosion, where the height of the model favours the underlit effect. Great bold colours - something in my head is whispering that they should be pink like in the movie, or for the lightning, blue neon (it was de rigeur in the 80s!) But I wouldn't dare say that out loud.

Instead I'll just repeat what I said upthread: utterly inspirational!

Wow, just stunned by this project. Beautifully realised Sir, and i love how you've engineered every aspect, especially the beams - what a great touch!

I'd love to see a 'night-time' game with led stret lamps, ghosts and other lighting (leds placed at the gun end of the beams too?!!!!)

Saw a really cool ghost effect on the LAF forum linking to a blog.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to complain about the distinct lack of pornography visible at your news stand. Other common publications appear to be well represented, but there is not even a hint of smut or even a plain paper package for a 28mm purveyors discretion. When the scale model of Judgement day strikes and the dead rise from their graves, I would feel more assured that my man dollies had a readily available supply of girly magazines at their local periodical dispensory. I feel this mars the otherwise splendid work you have achieved.

Yours sincerely

Vexed from Toorak

P.S.   A thing of beauty is a you forever.

The 2 counters underneath the demon dog are actually 2 ghostbusters that weren't gonna make it.

Neither would these 2. The last one met his maker through a telekinetic launched fire hydrant which was really cool  :D

No more pesky humans. The Streets are free for the demon folk to roam.

Demoing on the board was insanely busy all day.  I think everyone enjoyed the games.  I don't think a minute went by when someone wasn't taking pictures... there must be/will be thousands on the internet.  I didn't get a chance to take many pictures as I was flat out, the few I did I will upload tomorrow for you
@AndyM  I used the range finders a couple of times.  Great idea, well executed.  The only issue is that terrain and models get in the way.  One person playing the game insisted they were put on when he shot the Destroyer  lol

Again, thanks muchly for producing a superb board; combined with Karl and Graeme's great rules and scenario it made for a fun day demoing

This has to be the best in play 28mm POV photo ever  :D

You must have the patience of a saint, sir.
I think I will just delete my old crap when all the pics die.

Not at all! Just copy and paste (repeatedly) “ ~original “ into all your Photobucket links, right behind the “.jpg “at the end! It really is quite quick mate!

Thank you for the reminder about repopulating Photobucket images. I finally got it to work today. Just spent an hour and a half reviving photos for my Star Wars thread.
