Title: Future Wars Project - Zombies and Euro Cops. Mad Max Cars page 8.
Post by: Dan on September 07, 2008, 06:37:17 AM
Hi , I just thought I'd post a few pictures since this seems to be a popular subject amongst a few of us here at the moment.

I had assembled some GW Zombies awhile ago with no real use for them . I thought I'd use them to practise painting Zombie skin colours as I have never tackled the subject before. I also used the new GW washes .

Some of them I like but they will do to fill out the numbers . I just wish I had used round bases and made them a little less Medieval.

Next up was John Jenkins Chinese party members .

Not that happy with the skin tone but really like them.

Next are the Copplestone figures which I do really like .

Westwind Ladies as a size comparison . The rest are still being painted.

Some of my Euro Cop inspired force . Walking Flamer Unit thingys (not thought of a proper name for them yet) Repainted AT43 Spetsnatz Kolossus.

I used some WW2 German transfers on them as they would have been a bit plain otherwise and fit in with the theme.
I'm painting some Copplestone/EM4 Cops in a Euro scheme at the moment.

Very Germanic in colour scheme.  I like the idea.  Someone with a better knowledge of German might come up with something better than this:

schwererPanzerPolitzeiArbeitsschutzkleidung mit Flammenwerfer or "sPPA Flamm" for short.

Almost perfect!

"Schwere Panzerpolizei-Arbeitsschutzkleidung mit Flammenwerfer".

Maybe one could substitute "Schutzanzug" for "Arbeitsschutzkleidung", but either one is good.

"Schwerer Panzerpolizei-Schutzanzug mit Flammenwerfer" or "sPPSA/Flamm" for short.

I like the stuff. The Chinese party members are hilarious, if totally unPC (not that this is a bad thing). I actually like the skin tone, but they might benefit from some darker shading in the deepest recesses of the face, to enhance the "bony/haggard" look. On the other hand, this might distract from a pale effect, so it might be best only tried on a single piece first.

Thanks for the ideas for the names but I was hoping for something i could pronouce  ;)  how about Valkyries or would that be too Scandinavian? and probobly already over used .

I put Walking Flamer Suit into Babelfish and came up with gehende Flamerklage . So how about PanzerPolizeischwererGehendeFlamerklage or better Polizie Flamerklage? PPsGFK or PFK . Probobly not very good grammar.

German for Zombie is Zombie  :o

The Chinese figures have very flat faces so I think I would have to paint some shadows rather than use a wash .

Valkyries ("Choosers of the Slain") are also Germanic - as "Die Walküre" (sp?) - of Apocalypse Now and Wagnerian Opera fame.  Though the implication is that the "pilots" would be female.

So in line with the naming convention use the full title as already posted and add a name like:

Forseti: god of law and justice and overseer of civic assemblies.

Fenris (Fenrir): the wolf son of Loki

Einherjar: collective name for the dead warriors gathered in Valhalla who go out into the couryard and battle by day, recover, and feast in the hall at night.

Jötnar (singular "jötunn): giants.

Totally wrong. But it´s Babelfish´s fault! It translated "suit" in the meaning of "lawsuit", not "suit which I might wear", i.e. German "Anzug".

If you want it short, try "Polizei-FlammPanzeranzug". Closest English translation would be "Police Flamer Armoured Suit" ("Flammpanzer" being a German term for "flamethrower tank", so you got a little pun in it as well).

Nice models, especially the chinese party zombies. I also like the suits even though the German police has changed their livery from green to blue ;)

Thanks Chris , I think you've nailed it  8)

I was quite lucky with the John Jenkins models as I have all the weird stuff he did . I ordered them as soon as I saw them available.

Pil , that must have been a recent change as I Googled German Police only last week and only got the green and white livery . I really wanted to get away from Blue as it looks too American and I wanted a Euro feel for the whole Project .

The civillian force will be British themed with lots of Hasslefree and Foundry Future Wars figures .

The Army Unit will be Valhallens which I've had kicking around for ages , but dont know whether to go for a German or Russian look . :?

Not sure how to explain the Armed Chimps but am thinking of having them controlling the Zombies . I hope Zombies dont like Chimp Brains  lol

They used to be white and green, then they changed their cars to silver with green stickers, because it would be easier to sell the old cars, and now they changed the silver and green to silver and blue. However, there are still plenty of the green cars around too. That said, I really enjoy the colour scheme and I've been tempted to paint up some EM4 cops in green uniforms because it would just look really cool (but I have a Dutch themed force so my cops are just blue ;)). I'm looking forward to seeing some green cops BTW :)

Thanks Pil , I'm working on the Cops right now but am struggling with all the details  :-[ I think they will turn out ok though .

I just had an idea for a Walker for my Brit themed force . I'm going to mount a Siku Mini onto some GW Sentinal legs lol or maybe see if I can get a London Taxi and do the same.

Just an undate , first up the Cops which turned out to be a bit of a disaster . I used the new GW wash which was too close in colour to the Vallejo Soviet Green that I used as a base. It also made the paint all shiny so that even after mating down you cannot really see the three shades of paint that I used on them . I might go back and highlight them again later. :-[
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/2932738355_8a8238ec37_o.jpg)
Next the characters , including a Foundry Sniper for the Cops and a detective with shotgun. I painted a Hooters Teeshirt for Ashley but its a bit hard to see. You can guess Who the figure on the right is supposed to be. ;) The Zombie at the front (Ray?) was also a pain to paint . I think I had four attempts before I was happy.

Some Un PC Japanese Schoolgirls . I really enjoyed painting these . I even like the Anime sized eyes on the Eureka ones.

Some more Zombies.
Rage Zombies from Westwind . These were real nice to paint and not as large as I thought they might appear to be from what I had heard .
Eureka  Zombies , I had two packets of these and thought I would bend the arms etc to get some variation , but found out they were too brittle  :o
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3279/2933596796_7c3027acdc_o.jpg)
The rest of the Westwind Zombies.

I have just undercoated some Eureka Apes and Gibbons which I am really looking forward to painting. :-*
I should be able to start playing some games now , but have to find an opponent with a sense of humour . lol

Out of the things that I have on hand I only have Ghouls left to paint . I'm going to go on a buying spree after my little trip in November . There are several lines I am eyeing up but not sure about Zombie Police and dogs at this stage.

Thanks for the other replies , :D it makes posting stuff worth while.

Reading Westphalia Chris's thread on his Tank Hunter Battlesuit reminded me that I have not taken a photo of my Robot. So I took a hasty one so excuse the quality .
The crew don't look that bad in person, but it was the first attempt on doing skin tones using the new GW inks so forgive how the eyes look  :-[ They are the crew for my Polizei-FlammPanzeranzug (cheers Chris) . I was going for a cosmonaut look but Orange may have been a better colour choice.
I cannot remmber who makes the Robot , I thought I may have got it from Amazon but cannot find it in the catalogue now.

Yes, I liked the old German Polizei white and green livery much better than the boring version [even when the nabbed me for being drunk one night in West Berlin, many moons ago  lol]

When I get around to painting a police force, I'm going to use the old Polizei livery along with their khaki and green uniform colour scheme - very similar to yours, but with a brighter green and white hats.

It will remind me of all the great times I had in Berlin  ::)

Are they Copplestone Cops, or by someone else? They look like they would fit well in with "near-future" ranges.

I like your figures, Dan. You have a good painting style there - not overly complicated but very effective on the table I'd bet. The Chinese Zombies are hilarious and the flesh colour looks ok to me. I'm not sure how Chinese Zombies might look. We have plenty of primary [ie Hollywood] evidence for black and white skin tones, but I can't recall seeing Oriental ones  :?

Thanks for the comments . I enjoy painting in that style and they look good on my workbench . However they dont really stick out on a gaming table unless you pick them up. :'( I was a 1/35th scale modeller for a long time so have a more realistic style which is a habit thats hard to break.
The Cops are a mix of Copplestone and EM4 , all mastered by Mark Copplestone.
Now why did'nt I think of having white caps. :-[

Now to turn the clock back a couple of years to the start of the project .
These Future Wars figures are done in a older style when I was learning to paint with Acrylics rather than Humbrol Enamel. They seem to fit in ok with the later painting.

I may take a break from posting pictures for awhile as I wont be around but my Funky Gibbons , Gorilla Guerillas and Proffessor Oddie are being painted at the moment.

I actually went the other way, from enamels to acrylics (faster dry-times, no fumes, no organic sollubles(?) for cleaning brushes).

I like the negligé on the 4th mini 1st pic very much!

The naked female is a GW Cruella De Ville or Witch , sorry can't remember exactly. I converted her to carry a Necromunda Pistol and a Chainsaw from a Sentinal . I also removed some of her clothing (think Mankini) I love the figure but did'nt have way of using her till this project.

Correct :D he's a bit too bulky but has the correct jacket and weapon to start with . I greenstuffed the trousers to hide the Gaiters.
The Female in underwear is from the Foundry Street Violence line. I just need to come up with a suitably sexy name and rank for her  ;)
Bubba may need a bit more work to bring out the decoration on his chest but he seems ok .The one in the Pink Jacket I bought with Dr Who and realised it is the only figure that could pass for me so gave him a Luger so I could use him for nearly any modern setting. (maybe a white jacket would have been a better choice )

Hi thanks for the replies , I was just thinking last night that I may be too pushy posting everything I've painted lately .
The me in Pink Jacket is (below), I just swapped his right hand with a spare Foundry German Para Luger and hand that was left over from a conversion.

I've just painted some more Zombies.
Gary Hunt Miniatures with a Hasslefree Zombie as a size guide. I prefer Zombies with clothing as you can add so much character to them . I added a basketball , cricket ball and a Rugby ball to these figures . The Hasslefree figure was screaming out No 8 to me . ;)

The Hasslefree figures which  turned out much better than I expected.

Heresy Gouls.

I have also made up my mind about the setting for my games . Its basically the Bar area in my home town in about 25 years . Some buildings will be based on ones there and some others from my travels.
The first one is a Gentlemans Club  ;) built using Matakashi's cork tile method. I spent way too much time on this trying out different ideas and detailed the interior.

I really like the building too! I assume it is made out of cork. How is it holding up? How did you glue it together? PVA? I'm interested in making some buildings that size but I'm not sure how to approach it :s Some of my friends' cork has warped quite a bit when gluing...

What are your experiences like?

I have been using Gorilla Glue to glue the Cork Tile , but find it a bit messy as it can expand quite a bit . The only warping I've had has been because of bad storage of the tiles before building .
I used quite a bit of UHU glue and also Balsa Cement after the base building was built.
Sometime I add some supports where I think I will have problems with warping . My Stalingrad Factory springs to mind which has not had any bad warping in over a year of use . The sections on that are built from almost whole sections of tiles.

Just a few photos of things I've painted .

German Zombies from Amazon Miniatures . I think they also have a second set which I've not seen photos of. These will be used as re-enactors and also for my Dads Army project. Which they are based to match . I may need to build a fancy dress shop at some stage. ::)

John Jenkins Hopping Vampires and Jade Mummy . I had alot of problems highlighting the Mummy so may have another go later . Based to match my Pulp figures.

Doctor Who Phonebox (HassleFree) and a line up of hopefulls for his next assistant if Ripley gets the job (David Morrissey)  :o Not sure of the rules about nudity so will post the safe view  ;D I made the bases out of mirrored paper stuck onto GW bases so they match the stripper stage in my club.

Sorry... and thanks :) I sculpted these a few years back and sold them to Amazon. That picture is the first time I've seen them painted anywhere, nice job! I did sculpt a second set of zombies, zombie versions of some of the figures from the Girls with Guns range. I saw them cast but no pictures ended up on the website. I don't think the site has been updated in years.

I wanted some transport for my Survivalist gangs to cart around their loot but did'nt want them used as Tanks , so just armoured these Siku tractors and added loot to the trailers. I also added Drums of toxic waste that they are using as fuel in typical Kiwi DIY fashion  ::) . I wonder if the realise why they have so many problems with Zombies.

Some Studio Miniatures Zombies .
I've decided that this painting style is very hard to photograph . Everything I try seems to just wash them out . I had better results using natural light but its winter now . :'( At the moment I'm doing some Cowboy Zombies as a LoTOW Outlaw gang using a different method which is working well so far.

This is great stuff.

Hi all , sorry I've been travelling for a few weeks so have not had a chance to look in here.

Kidterminal , my setting is still evolving at the moment . Basically its about 20 or 30 years in the future so I can use modern as well as Future War vehicles and weapons . I really have not worked out a way to use everything I've painted yet . The Cops are a local force controlling a safe area while the gangs are in a more hostile area with lots of zombies and other Aliens poping up . I think the Apes will be part of an experiment gone wrong . Or perhaps the Professor meant to have them as a private army? Should be fun anyway . :D
The buildings are based on some local bars and some I've visited while travelling through Asia . So expect to see some beer bars at some stage . ;D
I'm aiming to fill a 6x4 table with my smaller buildings and if we put a Demo on at a game day use the two big buildings plus my mates ruined Stalingrad buildings to fill out a larger table. I just have to get some more people interested .
I will have a photo of a Plasticville house up soon . I finished it days after returning home . I have also finished a few more Cops (hero and Leader) plus some figures meant as objective markers (hostages and TV crew).
I'm just painting some GW Gouls and some Copplestone/EM4 Bio-Chem troops.

I'm looking for a Van suitable for use as a SWAT truck if anyone has any ideas?

Today I decided to have a break from my Build Something entry for a few hours and played with my Zombies . I got everything out on the table and took a few photos and then play tested the rules I'm trying to use . Chris Peers Future Wars with some mods for Zombie fighting . Somewhere along the line I seem to have made a big change in my flesh painting which I'm not happy about . :-[

I've settled on a setting now which is England in about 30 years time , sort of like the Film Doomsday . The Country is now ruled by King Harry who has built a secure enviroment to find a cure for the Zombie Plague . He has his own private Army and research facility (I still need to mod my Town hall building).

I think I need a bigger table .

So many questions  :o hope I answer all of them  lol

Akula , the only kit building is the plasticville one at the front , the rest are scratchbuilt . The yellow buildings are shown earlier in this thread.
The trolley fences on wheels are N gauge fences stacked three high with Nitto 1/76th scale Sherman bogie wheels and various 1/48th scale Tamiya PIV brackets holding it all up.

Commander , the Terminator dogs are from Amazon and called runaway dogs if memory serves me right . I loved Doomsday except for the Medieval bit .

Joroas , all buildings are scratchbuilt with the exception of the Plasticville house dead centre front . This does have walls made from Wills cobblestone roading though . The cobblestone base boards are made from Wallpaper and were made for my FOW Berlin project .

Hi Steve , thanks for the comments .
The jungle fighters are really easy to convert , however they do look a little blobby next to the lead figures . I reduced the muscles on the shoulders to make them look a little better .
I have been working on this project without a break for ages except for the Build something entry . I probobly have other figures not posted yet so will have a look to see if I can add anything .
Incidently , last weekend I went back and used a mix of red and brown washes to fix the flesh paint jobs that I had mucked up .

I managed to dig up this from the dusty recesses of the site.

Since I have enjoyed seeing https://www.facebook.com/MadMaxVsTheHumungous I decided to add a Road Combat element to my collection with weapons to match.

The Car is Mad Max's Interceptor with Warrior Woman providing some extra protection.

I have some more information and photos on my Blog.

Great job on the vehicles, the Disney buggy is a really nice mod.
