Title: GI JOE 28mm project
Post by: Nedo on December 08, 2014, 07:02:29 PM
This is my latest project....all material of 40k, will go into this project.
Here' some pictures:

Cobra Troopers and vehicle that I called Swamp Viper Tank
(http://oi59.tinypic.com/34yzk3d.jpg)

Destro and Cobra Troopers
(http://oi59.tinypic.com/9869h3.jpg)

Storm Shadow and two Crimson Guard
(http://oi58.tinypic.com/vmstqp.jpg)

Beach Head, Flint and Airtight
(http://oi58.tinypic.com/2zqhj0x.jpg)

Bazooka, Leatherneck and Footloose
(http://oi59.tinypic.com/2lng3d5.jpg)

Barbecue, Duke and Dialtone
(http://oi61.tinypic.com/2mnp5ag.jpg)

A version of the "Swamp Skyer" codename Chameleon, drived by a Cobra Viper
(http://oi57.tinypic.com/15qojs4.jpg)

Zarana and her brother Zartan
(http://oi60.tinypic.com/mkizo2.jpg)

All pieces are modified with parts of 40k and Mutant Chronicles minaitures, or parts of warhammer fantasy miniatures ....
Several pieces are modified with the green stuff (for example, Storm Shadow is heavily modified).

The colors have a maximum of two layers, to leave a toy effect well befitting with the old AF.

Obviously, this is just the beginning .... the cobra troopers will be minimum thirty, and crimson guard least twenty .... then I'll have to do the Eels and Snow Serpent troops.

Hope you like it !!!
PS: Sorry for some unfocused pictures ....

Now I am curious if you are planning on actually playing this and with what rules?

I think it all looks rather good but I never was a GI joe guy so take that for what its worth.

I plan to play with it when all pieces are completed .... a sort of skirmish game, with personal mechanics that I created for a fantasy project ....

Billisnt! I like the representations you've made. Good use of easily accessible figures.

That turret is all kinds of silly... which, given the subject, is just perfect! lol

Great job repurposing all those minis and vehicles.

That's some amazing conversion work.  Took me a few minutes to identify some of the base figures you used there.  I was almost ready to ask who produces official GI Joe figs - they look that good!

Yes indeed I tried to recreate the style of those vehicles equipped with hundreds of missiles and guns

Thank you to all.....this work is still in progress...
Now I'm pondering to buy an F14, an A10 and a pair of Huey AH1 Cobra...
but before to realize the vehicles I will continue to build the characters....

Nice work!  I've been pondering a Cobra project for some time. I've got the ERM cobra Commander figure, a chibi HISS in need of a bit of conversion and a bunch of the Reaper Nova Corp  figs that will become Vipers when I get around to ordering new heads from pig iron.  Until then, of course, they're all just sitting in a box...

I really like some of the choices you've made. Admittedly some of them stray a bit from the source, but your paint jobs bring them right back into the GI Joe universe and really capture the spirit of the material.  It's also great that you've shown that such a project can be done fairly inexpensively.

I really like your work. I haven't been checking the future pages in a while, so seeing another G.I Joe thread warms my heart something fierce. Well done.

Awesome stuff. I love how well suited the 40k stuff actually is for your project. I never would have thought it'd work but you've definitely proven me wrong. I love that Zartan conversion!

This is fantastic.  I love GI Joe.  Please tell me who the donor figures are for Zarana and Zartan.  Thanks.

What is a chibi HISS?
You see the HISS on Shapeways? In both 15 and 28mm.

Please tell me who the donor figures are for Zarana and Zartan.  Thanks.
They are both GW Dark Eldar figs with some conversions done.

It's the "Rapid Rollers Storm Shadow in H.I.S.S. Tank".

It's truely terribly as a toy, but once you get rid of the huge half-figure of Storm shadow and the front wheels, it has real potential.  The dimensions aren't perfect, but it's pretty close to 28mm.  Best of all, you can find them new (there's also Cobra commander in the same tank, but red) on Ebay for 10 bucks or less.
I think I paid a buck for mine at a resale shop.

I've been slowly gathering up items for this COBRA force.  I've got a couple of these 1/43 Hummer Hx concept trucks that will be the basis for the COBRA Stinger
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/dane5140/Misc%20Sci-FI/post%20apoc%20vehicles/DSC01054.jpg)
They're from Bburago and might still be available at Dollar General stores for $2.50 each.  You can read more about the Bburago line and it's compatibility with 28mm here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/06/post-apocalyptic-cars-and-motorcycles.html
The project is slowly taking shape. This week I picked up the scenic bases I will use for the figs, the "Sedition Wars: Battle of Alabaster" plastic bases which have a nice sci-fi look fitting the floors of a COBRA installation. All I really need now is to order these Pig Iron heads.

I have a couple of those kicking around in my stuff somewhere. I got them to convert into some kind of VSF tank. Got them cheap at a Big Lots store.

I couldn't find the HISS on Shapeways, but the prices I've seen for high quality printing of other 28mm scale things on Shapeways is more than enough reason for me to look elsewhere. If you have links to affordable vehicles, I'd love to see them.

Mike has got some great stuff.  Search for him on LAF.
Also the most recent painting league comp had a great COBRA entry to boot.

Found it.

And here's the HISS painted on the forum
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=38379.0

It's a very nice model and $37 isn't bad in the wider scheme of things. However, that's more than I've spent on the entire project so far and I'm not a fan of the surface of the material.
