Title: Plaque of Lady or Goddess fighting Oni
Post by: marianas_gamer on December 14, 2014, 04:50:55 AM
James I'm not sure if this post belongs here but it seems germane.  Please feel free to move it.
I have had this painting on porcelain for over 20 years.  I am pretty sure it dates between 1880 and 1920 when there was a real interest in Japanese design and goods and "Japan shops" were common in many American cities.

I assume that the painting depicts a folk tale or religious story.  Can anyone tell me about the lady fighting the oni?  Here is a closer view of an inscription on it that might help

Any help is much appreciated

Oni? That's Blashmey  :'(
He is a monkey called Sun Wukong. One of the main characters from Chinese Gods and demons novel "Journey to the West".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West)

A description of Monkey from Wiki
Quote
Sun Wukong possesses an immense amount of strength; he is able to lift his 13,500 jīn (7,960 kilograms (17,550 lb)) staff with ease. He is also extremely fast, able to travel 108,000 li (54,000 kilometres (34,000 mi)) in one somersault. Sun knows 72 transformations, which allow him to transform into various animals and objects; however, he is troubled in transforming into other forms, due to the accompanying incomplete transformation of his tail. Sun Wukong is a skilled fighter, capable of holding his own against the best warriors of heaven. Also, each of his hairs possess magical properties, capable of being transformed into clones of the Monkey King himself, and/or into various weapons, animals, and other objects. He also knows spells that can command wind, part water, conjure protective circles against demons, and freeze humans, demons, and gods alike

The lady is Princess Iron Fan.

The inscription is too blurry to recognize.

Freak Hair,
Thank you very much for such a quick and well informed response, very much appreciated!   I will value this more now for understanding the story.  Also, I can use it to harass my grandchildren, who I call monkeyboys (for their climbing proficiency among other things).
