Title: a long way home
Post by: chrisw on December 22, 2014, 07:59:39 AM
inspired as I have been by Amalric's 'Thor's journal', I have started my long planned and long procrastinated 'all things zombie' campaign.  There is a brief introduction on my blog and the first bat rep will be posted soon.
I hope you find something of interest.
Here are the main cast members,

Chris,
Excellent Batrep and painting!
I look forward to seeing Sam's adventures in the new zombie filled world he's found himself in.
Thanks for posting the pics and the AAR.

I've always got plenty of time for an ATZ campaign, I actually prefer reading the batreps to playing them myself!

I like how you've painted the Sam mini, the blue is a little bit different and really stands out. A Birmingham cop in the USA, I wonder what they'd think of the custodian helmet!

Another good bat rep.  Very politically timely introduction.  :D

Episode two was great, lucky nothing bad happened to the Ladies.
But you're right, it will soon turn nasty.
I look forward to the continuing saga and am wondering how Sam's day goes.

thanks for reading episode 2 - i didn't post the link here as nothing really happened :D
Sam's day is the subject of episode 3.  Hopefully it shouldn't be too far in the future.

Very cool AAR and pics, looking forward to see the whole campaign unfold.

As I really like the THW system I'm a little bit curious how you decide the rating in the expanded Stats? I had a quick look and couldn't figure it out, or is it more or less an arbitrary value?

Ex. Shooting (I believe it should take into account not only your shooting skill, but using it in hostile/ lethal situations. Just because you're an ace at the range, doesn't necessarily make you a killer...)

3- Standard citizen with none to little familarity with guns
4- Trained marksman, self-defensive shooting, police/ military training.
5- Extensive experience of using lethal force
6- Killed just about anything that walks or crawls at one time or another  ;)

there was no big plan as to the expanded stats, just a desire that not every roll depended on the same number, and I tried to give a bit of variety to help create an interesting character.  I agree that being a good shot doesn't necessarily mean that you would have the desire to use the skill in a lethal manner.   I think that my main character may need to develop a more lethal edge if he is to survive!
I have painted a few reinforcements for my survivors (a couple of pics below :) ) and the next episode should be written up over the next couple of days.  thoughts are always appreciated.

Very nice additions, Hasslefree's are very suitable aren't they  ;)?

Thanks for that response, I might "borrow" the expanded stats idea. Probably doing Morale, Shoot, Melee, People, (Drive), Fitness, Tech, because 7 is a magic number  :D.

Post by: chrisw on January 07, 2015, 05:31:59 PM
nice set of stats - 7 is a good number  :) .  Would morale be the general 'initiative' stat when characters aren't doing anything else? (Stand in for normal rep score?)

I have played the previous incarnation of ATZ and SGS extensively and am quite happy with using REP only, I really enjoy the THW system.

BUT, saying that, your post has made me musing a little, seven might be a bit much (more isn't necessary better) but I think the diverse stats will actually have impact on the game, not only window dressing.

Yes, Morale would be the "stand-in" for REP for activation and taking psyche tests (See the Feast...) I just thought it fitted my idea better than Leadership, but doing the same thing.

I will post my musings here as well. Stay tuned and thanks for the idea  :D.

Hi Chris
Just read your reports and enjoyed them both. I think even the 2nd one where nothing really happened is still good, there is always the tension when playing the game, because you never know how things will turn out.

I have done a similar thing to you, using various attributes instead of just the Rep, playing solo it means that with a simple dice roll against an attribute the figure tends to make decisions without too much influence from you, all adds to the uncertainty.

Keep up the reports.

Thanks
John

I will, thank you.  Am typing up the third one today but they take longer to write up than they do to play!! :o
I like the more varied stats (not an idea I can claim as my own) as they give the characters a little more...well...character!

It's an awesome story, I can almost feel the smell of burnt cordite, sweat and blood  lol!!! Great read and Sam is doing very well, so far  ;).

Very cool urban board you've got, a bit envious. Care to elaborate on some of the bits? Where did you get the streets/ bases from?

What a great story & Batrep!
The poor bus driver, but Sam's the MAN!
Did he get a rep increase?
Did Harry?
Were there any passengers on the bus?
I look forward to #4!

After that "one man army" stuff, Sam SHOULD get a bloody medal (and an increase in Rep)  lol.

Sam'll need a rep increase when he runs out of 12guage rounds.  ;)

the boards are just Stoelzel's structures print outs from the undeveloped real estate set glued on to 30cm sq 5mm mdf board.  this gives me lots of permutations on the layout and there is a lot of variety within the set for all sorts of roads at different stages of the apocalypse.  Cant recommend carl's stuff enough.  Most of the buildings I possess  (all except 1) are from the same source.  print out and build on 5mm thick foam board.  Start with the easy ones and move on to the more complex ones.  I really like them and they all have detailed interiors.  Each set normally comes with options so you can print out 2 or 3 of the same set without them being the same.  you can get them from wargames vault for a few dollars each and it's an easy way to fill out a zombie board.  They are quite addictive though......
The walls are just cork floor tiles cut into blocks and reglued together.  I build a lot of stuff out of cork bricks.  I find the gluing of cork blocks quite relaxing :)

Hectic story, I wasn't expecting Sam to make it through alive! I thought he was a gonner. Good luck to him next time.

Cheers

I don't think Harry will be getting any better at his age  but I think Sam is due an increase in his shooting skill - he has been using it a lot lately.  However, I think shooting 4 maybe as good as it will get for him, but we shall see!
No passengers that made it off alive anyway...... lol

I feel he is only surviving because of the shotgun!!  a great leveler for a shoot3/rep 3 character!!

I thought they were, I have some card buildings, mostly Fat Dragon and I tried to do The Cottage but I didn't like what I did with it so I shelved that project.  :( I did make some interior print outs, bed, toilet, cupboards etc though. For a guy who's got very limited time for the hobby I have personally found that the MDF buildings are a real blessing.

Never underestimate a 12 guage.
Have you seen Hobo with a Shotgun with Rutger Hauer?
Great grindhouse typoe flick!

Amalric - I followed the link  lol  A film I shall watch out for!!!

Legionaire - I like the mdf buildings.  They look really good but I have about 20 foamboard ones now and I'm not sure how well they would mix.  I plan on doing a very british civil war game at some point and I think I will be using mdf buildings for that.

lol Nor was I at a couple of points.  You know you have done something wrong when you have to rely on an out of control bus to pull your nuts out of the fire!!!

Me personally, because I have limited storage space.would look into multipurpose buildings. Although my ATZ campaign will take place in the UK, where WWII buildings will come in handy, I will opt for sarissa's City block, as I can use it for modern/ superhero too.

I can't judge how well paper/ MDF will mix but personally I'm not too bothered. Suspension of disbelief you know!!! I've even comfortably used my daughters Brio train set q couple of times.

8) very nice.

I like the figure with the bunny. She is almost dreamlike, unsure whether to use the gun or the soft toy.
