Hello chaps
I'm currently trying to get back into the swing of things after a long break. To this end I've started ploughing through some of the old plastic mountain, starting with some Riders of Rohan. Well, I say Riders. They seem to have lost their horses, so let's call them Ramblers of Rohan.

I took a lot longer painting these test pieces than I normally would with a unit as I spent ages faffing about with colours to try and match the feel of the Rohirrim from the films. Proper photos will follow later but these chaps are more or less done. I was surprised at the lack of detail on the faces; I wasn't expecting much from a single piece plastic but the spare definition was quite a shock. These will need to be revisited to bring them up to what I regard as tabletop standard.
I am happy with the cloaks; I went with something slightly more vibrant than the greyish-green of the films. This was done by not using any washes but by a couple of layers of glazes. In retrospect the leather is too brown - the redder one I used for the accents will probably end up being the main one I use for the rest of the chaps.
As you can see, I did my test batch as a Unit of 8 - this is for use with SAGA as well as LOTR; these guys will fill in quite nicely for some Anglo Saxons, I think.
I'll update with the next batch when they're done.

I've also just in the last couple of weeks completed two character miniatures for our D&D game. The first is by Oathsworn miniatures who gave fantastic customer service - full story of their magnificence here: http://critfailure.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/oathsworn.html - and is fabulous Dwarf Fighter:

The second is a lovely little wizard from Midlam Miniatures. In my defense, the player chose the colour scheme for this one. I hate it :)

Thanks for looking - and again, I thoroughly recommend using Oathsworn.
-
VERY WELL DONE! The Rohan Fellows, Dwarf, & Wizard all painted up BEAUTIFULLY...EXCELLENT bases on the Tolkienites. I think the Wizard, by force of character, is my favorite. Keep the creations coming; I really enjoy your style.
-
Finished painting Theoden:

his armour is a nightmare to do; my solution is available on the blog (http://critfailure.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/to-ruin-and-red-dawn.html) if anyone wants it.
With having him done, I could get a shot of the Rohan force as it stands now:

And, while I had the setup, I grabbed a decent shot of my two adventurers:

Really great work. Very inspiring
-
Very well done Vindice. They look marvellous. I like the GW Rohan figures, but found their shield designs almost impossible to paint well. >:(
Love that dwarf too, and you've done him proud! Are you using him as Gimli?
-
Really great work. Very inspiring
thank you kindly.

Love that dwarf too, and you've done him proud! Are you using him as Gimli?
I looked at the film and all the shields were faded, scratched and generally tatty so I felt no shame in just Drybrushing and an ink wash. :)
The dwarf is my wife's Dwarf Fighter in our D&D campaign; I do actually have a Gimli kicking around somewhere.
-
Nice work all around. I particularly like Theodin.
-
Nice brushwork, despite your misgivings, I think the wizard is excellent,
Your player should be very pleased with him
Regards
Jim
-
Agreed about the Wizard also. Contrasting paint schemes that border on garish when viewed in a larger-than-life picture. often look quite good on the tabletop.
-
Thank you all.
I still hate it ;D

Dragonborn Cleric nearly done:

The source lighting really didn't work, but it's a quick fix. I just hope the player is happy with this one.
-
Actually managed to get a game of Warhammer Fantasy in on Friday night.

Wow so vibrant colours! Amazing skill and the scheme is very cool. Great work!

Picked up some second hand Lord of the Rings stuff. In amongst it was most of the Mines of Moria set (http://critfailure.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/unexpected-shinies.html).
I stripped and tarted up the miniatures (http://critfailure.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/they-have-cave-troll.html)

And finally got them painted:

Very nice work. The blue on the troll works very well and make him look unique.

good stuff

I seem to have about fifteen threads on the go, so I'm going to sort of consolidate in here.
Currently doing some scenery for Dragon Rampant:

Hi mate, grate models and decors!
-
Brilliant!
-
The altar is simple but brilliant.
-
Trying to get on with some painting but kept being 'helped' by my eldest. So it seemed like time to crack out the dungeon tiles I made and introduce him to the fine art of killing people and taking their stuff.

Got some more painted. Really happy with them. I cannot begin to express how nice most of the Lord of the Rings miniatures are to paint. Just lovely sculpts.

In one of the boxes of Middle Earth second hand miniatures I picked up off ebay I got the Great Goblin. To get the transluscent skin effect that the CGI model had, I decided to paint it using a series of glazes...

Lovely painting on the big fella! You've certainly captured his look from the film. "I feel a little song coming on"
-
Thanks, Globlin. Not often you get the chance to paint Dame Edna, so worth taking your time over :)
-
The flesh is great. I love his jowls (well I don't love them but I love what you've done with them)
-
The Great Goblin is.......... great!
Excellent work on capturing the skin tones. I could see him doubling up as a ghoul king in a an undead army.....

It' worked; he's gross. Well done. ;)

Very nice paint job. The skin tones are amazing.

I am pleased that the grossness of my painting is meeting with near universal approval :-)

That does look very good 8)

Finished off my summer fantasy splurge with the big one - a dragon. Did it using Tolkien's own colour scheme:
Spent a bit of time on it with gap fillling and glazes to build up different shades on the skin and scales and what have you.

The dragon colours are fantastic.
-
Thanks Ragnar. I wasn't sure about going with such a plain colour scheme but it seems to have worked out.
-
Great Dragon!
I have to take out one of my own dragons and paint another... scheduled...

Sorry to have usurped your painting queue :-)

You're welcome to do so!
It's chaotic anyway!

-
I know the feeling!
-
I was never a massive fan of this model, but your paintjob really brings it to life - much better than the one GW have used on their website!
-
Thank you; very kind words indeed.
-
Very nice dragon with a proper old skool feel. Excelllent work.

Thanks Pappa.

Picked up the new White Dwarf on Saturday and painted the free miniature on Saturday evening. It's a nice little figure:

I say little. It's bloody huge - about the same size as the Moria cave troll from the Lord of the Rings range.

Nice! Was thinking of doing something similar, he's a big old boy though!
