Title: Vladimir's Miscellaneous Fantasy Thread
Post by: Vladimir Raukov on January 15, 2015, 12:36:00 AM
Hey everyone!

I like fantasy. I like painting stuff. Let's get this started, eh?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0817.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0817.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0818.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0818.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0819.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0819.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0820.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0820.jpg.html)

I picked up this guy for $2 at a gaming convention called MOAB. Props to Constable Bertrand for pointing him out to me. I have no idea where he's from, but he scrubbed up pretty well for a couple of bucks!

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0578.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0578.jpg.html)

These little scamps are Peter and Albert, both available from hasslefree. Peter originally held a crowbar, but now he has a scythe thanks to a little green stuff. They are the most miniature miniatures that I have ever painted.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0583.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0583.jpg.html)

And for a size comparison, here's Albert next to Joshua Blackpowder, a chaos knight that I repurposed for my empire army.

That's it for now, but there'll be more to come!

Nice. :D

I like Joshua Blackpowder. Being a big, scary, Empire (non-Chaos?) knight makes him seem like a Warhammer Gregor Clegane to me. Especially with that yellow and black. :)

Cheers! I pretty much use him as a walking cannonball in battles. Go. Charge here. Smashy, smashy! I'll post up pics of the rest of his family in time.

Nice work!

Cheers!

Really nice work, I really like the top model.

Yay, more threads to watch. 8) 8)

Albert looks fabulous. His big helm is perfect, and he looks so funny standing shoulder to shoulder with uncle Josh.

That gold armour is very shiney 8)

Cheers
Matt.

Really nice work, I really like the top model.

Thanks! The top one's my most recently finished model. I wasn't sure what colours to paint him, so I just used the ones on my family's coat of arms.

I'm sure I've shown you Albert before. He's so tiny!
Thanks for noticing the armour. It's my special greatsword's mix. Start with boltgun metal, add a layer of watered down chainmail on the higher parts (I tend to overdo that) and then paint a line of Hashut Copper along the edge, with a line of shining gold on top of that. I printed the recipe from GW's website before it went away.

Oh, well who's this fellow?
(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0824.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0824.jpg.html)

It's the white dwarf himself! I picked this guy up at MOAB for $10. If I could paint him again, I'd probably keep his axe separate. It was a pain to try and paint around it.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0826.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0826.jpg.html)

Yes, I know there's a tiny bit of metal in the wood section. I'll probably fix it later. Right now, I have something very big in the works.

Like, really big.

It's a troglodon.

Cheers Bero! I'm sure a couple of intrepid lads like us can find a use for him.

Now for something completely different.

Actually, it's quite similar. Here's Oracle Kai'Tehe and his mount, Zec'Loq! Having just earned his divining rod, Kai'Tehe is eager to serve the Slaan in tracking down any stolen glyph plates.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0829.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0829.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0830.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0830.jpg.html)

It's very hard to drybrush in some places.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0831.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0831.jpg.html)

I mucked up a tiny part during construction (clipped where I shouldn't have) and that sent a shockwave throughout this entire side. Green stuff is my friend. Hmm, maybe that was why I had those gaps in the collar.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0832.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0832.jpg.html)

Bertrand liked the acid loogie, so I used that instead of the tongue. Took me forever to get it the way I like. It's probably a tad dark, but I'll live.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0833.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0833.jpg.html)

Kai'Tehe up close. I don't think I could be happier with his eyes.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0834.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0834.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0835.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0835.jpg.html)

Kai'Tehe with his spawn-cousin, Axta'Hua and a random skink. They ended up differently-sized. Ah, the inscrutible plans of the Old Ones...

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0836.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0836.jpg.html)

I did Axta'Hua for a painting contest. He and Kai'Tehe were spawned from different pools, but often march together when Xlanhuapec is under attack.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0837.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0837.jpg.html)

I used to think that my stegadon, Tepok's Sting was big. The bastiladon, named Chotec's Gaze was pretty big too. Zec'Loq is even bigger still!

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0840.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0840.jpg.html)

This is my full lizardmen army. 5012 points of cold-blooded murder! I can't not gush over them, they're my babies.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN0842.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN0842.jpg.html)

Rise my thread, rise from the ashes!  :P

For ten years, I helped lead youth groups at my Church. Apparently doing this for ten years is an achievement worthy of merit (it didn't even feel like eight) and I was given a gift voucher for GW. With no idea on how to build on my armies at the time (I was still painting the troggy) so I went for something I'd wanted to do for a while, but didn't have the time or monies.

I got a dragon.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1909.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1909.jpg.html)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1908.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1908.jpg.html)

When I got this shirt, I wore it pretty much every week while leading. It's my favorite shirt and reproducing it in miniature form always seemed like a good idea to me. I opted for the high elf dragon as it was a tad more heroic looking than the dark elf alternative, plus the model has interested me for ages. Just look how it hangs there! I've still got to figure out the tail dealies and merge the horns properly, but I'd say it's coming together nicely so far.

Oh yes, that is a big beasty pete! Very Cool!  :-*  :-*

The beard tentacles are a nice addition.

Any plans to twist some wire/cover in hot glue/PVA soaked tissue paper to make some spooky tree? That could be a nice addition to reference the tshirt.

Also, will you be doing the HE rider? Converting a Empire governor... or scrapping the rider all together to make it closer to the t-shirt? You could sand off the saddle + GS, and insert a magnet, with a corresponding magnet in the riders rear end.

Cheers
Matt

Cheers Bero! The tentacles were actually kind of necessary. That's the point where the dragon's lesser horns would have gone, which had spaces cut into them for the reins. It also kept him more in line with the shirt, so that was a plus.

Now, to answer your questions: No, there's not really enough space on the base for a tree. Besides, by keeping it relatively bare, it'll be easier to simulate a barren cave/top of a mountain, depending on where our games might take place. As for the other question, I've already gs'd the slot behind the saddle that allows for the crazy huge back of the chair to fit in, so I'm not going to be adding a rider. I considered trying to get the armour off, but that part of the kit also holds the back spines on and I didn't want to risk having it all collapse. The rider also has really long, flowing robes which would make it hard to place on a terrestrial mount.

That will be an awesome colour scheme. Looking forward to seeing it done.

Cheers beefcake! Results may vary with the colour scheme based on overall skill and large things taking a long time and making me go, 'stuff it, I just want to finish this now and move on to the next thing.'

Fair enough Pete.

You could try sanding and filing the saddle flatter, if it breaks from the spines perhaps the plastic cement will be enough for the spines to become one with the dragons back. And you could try adding some GS scales where the seat used to be. Just a thought.

I've broken the propellor on my tiger moth 3 times now, each time plastic cement makes it almost as good as new! Hahaha.

Results may vary with the colour scheme based on overall skill and large things taking a long time and making me go, 'stuff it, I just want to finish this now and move on to the next thing.'

lol I know that feeling! Try and take it slow Pete. If you get bored do something else for a while, but I think it deserves a once in 10 year paint job :D use all your skill Pete, I know you can do it. And good luck with the yellow! ;)

Cheers
Matt.

That's a great collection of reptilian rapscallions you have there! Also I have to approve of the 'if in doubt - get a Dragon' approach. Can't wait to see it painted  :)

I would, but if I keep moving on to new projects, I just have a bunch of half-painted models staring at me as I go out to buy more shinies. I passed a major bump this arvo though, so the going will be much smoother from here on in.

That's a great collection of reptilian rapscallions you have there! Also I have to approve of the 'if in doubt - get a Dragon' approach. Can't wait to see it painted  :)

You mean there's any other approach than getting a dragon?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1910.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1910.jpg.html)

Here he is, basecoat all done and ready for washes. You might notice that his wings are a slightly different colour than his body. That's because he is a special dragon and I definately didn't run out of a paint that isn't sold and more and then bought the wrong colour to replace it. Fortunately, I had enough of the original paint left to tidy up my mistakes from this point.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1911.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1911.jpg.html)

This thing has proven not only a delight to put together, but to paint as well. There's a few challenges up near the rear legs, but nothing that can't be solved with a little elbow grease, patience and this: https://youtu.be/BSLPH9d-jsI

'Nother post. The stonework came out a little darker than I planned, but I was using the absolute last dregs of that pot of black, so that's what I've got to work with.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1916.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1916.jpg.html)

The yellow flowed a little here, but it'll be fine once I get cracking on the next stage.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1914.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1914.jpg.html)

Is there something on my shoulder? Is it a spider? Oh I really hope it's not a spider...

Nice work, the yellow wash has really helped to tie the slightly different yellows together, further highlighting will finish the blending perfectly I think mate. 8) 8)

What? You new around here or something? Figures. That dragon up there used to belong to Kresh, eater of babies. Real nice fella, that.

Kresh was a warlord 'round here. Real big goals, you know the type.

Now, Kresh is long dead, but his dragon just sits up on that mountain. Our livestock are too scared to leave the stables. Who knows what it's planning?

Just a quick update here.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1948.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1948.jpg.html)

I picked up Dana here at MOAB last year at the paint and take table. Her skin tone looks more natural in person. Perhaps she's casting a spell?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1950.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1950.jpg.html)

Fed up with the restrictions of the local Mage's Guild, Dana took to the forests to do things her own way. I initially thought of her as a halfling, but she is comprable to some of my human-sized miniatures if I took the time to base her. Then again, some of my dwarves are nearly human sized as well...

Cheers! I'm still not sure what made me pick purple, but we are now in a world where it is a thing. And now for more miniatures! The first comes with a story and everything!

This little waif was sent to a prestigious (some would say pretentious) school for white mages (mages? magi? maguses?) at a great cost to her family. She studied hard, but the fact that she couldn't afford a full uniform led to her classmates taunting her relentlessly.

The girl threw up her arms. "Please, sir knight! I'm cold and starving and I've nobody to teach me magic!"

"Magic, eh? Well, Miss Cuthburt's isn't too far from here, I'll take you there."

"But I just came from there! I tried so hard, I did, but the other girls call me a filthy peasant...and other things that were worse! Please, surely you know someone who can teach me! I...I can cook and clean real well if you need me to pay you back, but I-I..."

"Enough, child. I won't send you back there, but I'm a tad between fortunes myself. Tell you what, you come with me and we'll find someone. Now, could you do one thing before we settle in for the night?"

"Sure, what?"

"Can you make my soup not be on fire? I'm not one for a meal that spicy before bed."

The girl took a breath, placed her hands in front of her and willed the fire to vanish. Fortunately, there was just enough for the two to share. Where will their adventures take them? Tune in next time...(which will probably be a month or two from now when I paint the next thing)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1985.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1985.jpg.html)

This guy doesn't have much of a backstory compared to the girl, but I did relearn the lesson of not attaching a rider to the mount before painting, so that's something, right?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN1987.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN1987.jpg.html)

He could have lived comfortably for years on that one act, but adventure is not a calling that is so easily ignored!

Behold, I live!

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2033.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2033.jpg.html)

First up is some LotR scenery I picked up at MOAB last year. I tried to make it match a deserty/mine floor, for a little project that Bertrand needs to start at some point. If I keep this up, I might finish what I got last year in time for MOAB next year!

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2034.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2034.jpg.html)

I wanted to make the stone the statues were made from look out of place, but still matched to the ground in a way, like they'd been dragged from somewhere else. Where could they have come from? Where are they going? Nowhere, silly. Statues can't move...or can they?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2035.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2035.jpg.html)

Just a shot from the top. I wonder what caused the campers to flee before they had a chance to start their fire?

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2036.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2036.jpg.html)

Well it sure wasn't this guy, that's for sure. This is Wildfire Magni, an adventurer from a noble house of mystics. He himself can't use magic and set out to prove himself worthy of respect, admiration...and ladies. He normally doesn't have a goatee, but this is as close a model to the character as I could find and I couldn't be bothered trying to get the beard off.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2037.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2037.jpg.html)

While stalking the woods for dinner one night, he chanced upon a knight clumsily trying to teach a young mage how to use magic. Seeing that their attempts would likely get the forest (and anything edible) burnt or possessed to a crisp, he stepped out and offered his services.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2038.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2038.jpg.html)

At first, they rejected his offer, until he pointed out that he was probably the only person willing to offer help to them for miles around for a low, low price, so they'd best think again.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2040.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2040.jpg.html)

So now they're travelling together, for good or ill...

More warhammer! (Never thought I'd be saying that again.)

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2044.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2044.jpg.html)

Lil' Buh-Buh was a purchase from MOAB last year, which I've only recently gotten around to painting up. That's not to say that I haven't bought anything else since, I'm just a slow painter. His head's a bit messed up because I couldn't work out where/how to glue the crest on properly, so it was a spot of bodgy green stuffing to the rescue!

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2046.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2046.jpg.html)

It's a tight squeeze in the old howdah, which meant one of the skinks had to go on a spare base. Fortunately, he was one of the ones that turned out fairly well.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2050.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2050.jpg.html)

A comparison with Tepok's Sting, a fairly effective later model stegadon. I originally thought that it was much taller, but it's not as tall as the new guy. Wider? Yes. Taller? Kind of, if you count the poles on the back.

Well there's plenty more where that came from! (Well, probably one more at this point, but whatever.)

Time for updates! This is Captain Hodgepodge. He's made from more spare parts than anything else. Bonus points if you guess them all correctly!

This elf prince is made mostly from parts from the high elf dragon kit with some legs I picked up a couple of years ago at MOAB. I'm not sure where they come from exactly, but they work here.

This is Maisie Raukov, the youngest daughter of Vladimir Raukov (the fellow in my avatar). She's a powerful wizard with a big-ol' staff and so many jewels that I nearly went mad trying to paint 'em all.

Another white dwarf miniature. I didn't realise he had armour on when I started painting and assumed he must have been a slayer. By the time I realised my mistake, I couldn't be bothered to un-orange his beard.

Not sure why the flash went off on this one, but here we are. Now that all those photos are up, I can start on the stuff on the stuff I got last year.

This handsome bunch of lads are known as The Stirland Sobers. They've drunk enough to charge into nearly anything for less pay than a state trooper, but they're sober enough to remember which end of the weapon to hold.

(http://i970.photobucket.com/albums/ae184/peterjbrennan/DSCN2092.jpg~original) (http://s970.photobucket.com/user/peterjbrennan/media/DSCN2092.jpg.html)

Free company units don't usually allow for a musician and standard bearer, so I improvised.

I do enjoy how leany and dynamic these models are, even if they were a bit fiddly to paint at some points.

Here we have most of the fellowship of the ring. Sure, the set I got was missing a few components, like bases...and legolas...but at four bucks, how could I refuse? I couldn't, that's how.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4431/37097397991_695c7857a9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YwaRYc)

I popped these guys on square bases, since I had enough of those to do the lot in one go without going *shudder* outdoors. I went for a dry, dusty base since Constable Bertrand says that he's working on a desert cave network...but his little bubba has started walking and progress will be a little slow for a while. In his defence, she is flippin' adorable and good at distracting people.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4372/37068335872_961d8bf3bb_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YtAUPb)

These photos are coming to you live from my new Flikr account, since photobucket is being a butt. I was also surprised to find how many models had backpacks/bedrolls on them. Good practice for the post-apocalypse, lads!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4422/37097397251_f29136111e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YwaRKr)

Overall, I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, even if my paints aren't 100% colour accurate.

And cheers for the kind words.

Here we have Queen Khalida from the old Tomb Kings Range. After being booted out of warhammer, I picked her up for twelve bucks at MOAB last year. Not a bad deal!

<img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4409/36530884294_4bbbc342f6_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Queen Khalida">

See, some of the little scamps were already based and party painted (rather poorly, I might add). A spot of dettol took care of the worst of it, but the way (s)he'd put them down made getting to the stomachs pretty tricky. The ones with the nobbly dirt parts were pre-based, the other ones I put down myself and had a slightly easier time of it. Slightly.

Now, don't go jumping to conclusions, I haven't started a sigmarine army. I did this guy up as part of a speed painting contest. Could I have done better? Probably. Did I leave him on the shelf once I brought him home?

Nope.

Honestly, I was glad to do a base that was just regular grass and rocks again. Not that I don't mind desert landscapes and stuff, but this was nice too, you know?

I'm back! Again!  :o

This is Rorak Stonefist, the first character that I did for fifth edition D&D. The model itself was a freebie from MOAB. Free stuff is the best stuff.

As a youngish dwarf of sixty five, Rorak was perfectly content to live in his mountain home, carving stone and smashing face as most of his ancestors had before. That is, until the nightmares began.

After bringing these too-real dreams to his family and the community in general, it was discovered that Rorak had been chosen to seek out The Helm of Rage, a powerful artifact lost long ago and dangerous in the wrong hands (or even the slightly better than wrong hands)

Now, armed with weapons, armour and other tokens of well wishing from his family, Rorak ventures forth to find the helm, smash some faces and drink all the beers.

Hey, he's a dwarf. What'd you expect?

Hold on, who's this lot?

Why it's my D&D group! What say we go around and meet the folks that I occasionally get together and roll dice with.

This is Aldur, a character my DM rolled up, but is so far yet to play. Maybe he'll make an appearance when I step in occasionally as DM.

Aldur hails from a city called Sanctuary, where everyone strives to be the absolute best at their chosen field. Since the city is built into a mountain, space is at a premium.

What compelled Aldur to leave his home is a mystery, but maybe it has to do with his pact with the undying light?

The model comes from exmanus studios. Every year at moab, I buy a model from him. Some of his sculpts are so-so, but I liked this one.

This barbarian lass is Sierra Foxtrot, childhood friend of my character, Wildfire Magni (who you can see on the previous page.)

Sierra and Wildfire bonded over a shared talent for the lyre (which is apparently a trope in chinese war films?) but since Sierra is nomadic and Wildfire is a noble, they didn't hang out much after that one meeting.

The fates intervened and brought the two back together in a dodgy tavern in Neverwinter to adventure together and smash goblins into a fine, arrow-filled paste.

Sierra is meant to be armed with a greataxe, but aetherworks didn't have a barbarian lady with an axe who quite fit the bill, so I made do with a greatsword. Besides, who's to say she won't find a magic greatsword at some point?

I'm not sure why the picture's so dark on this one, but trust me when I say that this is Rieta, the tiefling ranger.

Rieta and Wildfire seem to take turns being either really good or really horrible at archery, which they sass one another about relentlessly. Again, the model is a reaper.

This dwarven lass is Diesa, the Druid.

I'm not sure what compelled Diesa to take up the adventuring life, but she's handy with her hammer and flames.

This is another reaper model and honestly, the second I saw it I knew that it was perfect for Diesa. Sturdy, wielding a hammer, covered in runes and junk...it was tricky to base, though.

This is Rolen, one of the newer members to our group. He's an elf monk who fell from an airship with a halfling and a dead body that had fallen on his own sword. As it turns out, the dead guy was a slavemaster and I got myself a free sword.

I don't know much about Rolen's character yet, but he strikes me as the type of elf who always tries to keep positive and I painted his robes to reflect that. The model's another reaper, but with a citadel spear tip.

This is Lynen the halfling and I bet you're all thinking that he's a rogue, right?

Well, he's actually a warlock. Of the Archfey. With about three daggers.

Why would a warlock need three daggers? Not sure, but just listen to this little tale: while clearing some bandits out of an inn, Lynen grabbed two of his daggers (one which had been lodged in an underling's throat) ran across a table and shouted, 'watch me jump!' as he leapt through the air and landed on the bandit leader's shoulders, plunging each in and holding on like some macabre rodeo.

It. Was. Amazing.

I honestly had fun painting this reaper model. The fact that I made his cloak green was pure luck, since I'd forgotten that he was a warlock of the archfey while painting him.

What's that? You want some old-school warhammer?

It's probably not as old school as some folks here prefer, but I got started on bad boys like these. I got these ones from Constable Bertrand for the low, low price of zero dollarydoos. He offered me a bunch more, but I had so much on my grey mountain at the time that I didn't want to overload myself. In hindsight, I guess I could have taken some more.

I painted so many of these bad boys back in the day. Mmm, tasty nostalgia.

My original plan for basing was to give them a deserty look to match with the desert tunnel system that Bertrand will probably never get around to building, but the pull of nostalgia was too strong.

I think part of his tail snapped off when I stripped the old paint off. Whoops!

Amazing what a few years and better paintbrushes can do for you.

That drum was such a pain in the butt to paint, but it turned out alright, eh?

Good thing you don't need to be too smart to bang a drum...

So many feathers...

As I painted this lot, I realized that I'd never actually painted a saurus champion before. Huh.

I honestly don't know what possessed me to paint the feathers in so many different colours.

In the end, I'm glad that I did.

Painting this particular mini reminded me why I hate metal standards. So bendy, so fragile!

When I took these photos, I realized that I'd forgotten to gloss up the gemstone on the back of his headdress. Don't worry, I added it later.

Despite how fiddly this mini was to paint, it was surprisingly enjoyable.

The one on the left is one of the first miniatures I ever painted. The one on the right is the new one. I tried to use the same colours that I had available to me back then, with the knowledge that I'd gained in the meantime. I'd say there's some improvement!

...right?

I return! Again!

I think this is a GW LotR figure, but I'm not sure who it is, so until someone tells me who it is, he shall be known as Captain Squishface.

I might have overdone it on the flowers, but I reckon the sword came out alright.

I'm pretty happy with how the cloak turned out.

Hey, those trees were yours once. I'll need to invest in some more scenery once I've got some more room...

The flowers are mininatur apple blossoms. They work pretty well as shrubbery, but do you know who doesn't need shrubbery?

That's right, it's Bonsey the skeleton! He's one of two miniatures that I got from a try-your-luck machine at moab this year. At the rate I'm painting, you'll see the other one in a couple of days.

Bonsey doesn't have much interest in scaring people. He just wants to entertain! He does have an oversized funny bone, after all.

It's hard to tell in this image, but his pants came up a treat.

Well, I said I'd do it and I did it!

Allow me to introduce to you Stinky, the battle skunk!

First used by pixies in the massacre of Glitterpond, battle skunks are unpredictable, but surprisingly solid fighters when equipped with their tail spikes...

...and they are equally equipped for tactical withdraws.

Stinky is a particularly heroic fighter, having lasted ten whole minutes in his first battle before running away.

The model is from super dungeon explore. I got it at moab and the second that I saw the stripe on its back, I knew he had to be a skunk.

So yep, that's it. All my minis are painted.

Every last one.

Oh no, what have I done?

Bonesey is quite good. He reminds me of Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie.

Huh, I didn't notice. I guess he kind of does!

This is the newest member of my D&D group, Enna Starflower. She's a half-elf bard who enjoys lutes, pan flutes...and bagpipes. The model is Reaper's Jirelle, iconic swashbuckler.

During her first adventure (after my character stopped saying how glad he was to have someone to properly chronicle his greatness) we ended up at a cave. The halfling warlock waddles on in and asks if any of the cave's occupants can understand him. After being turned into a living pincushion of goblin arrows (down to one hitpoint) Enna used disguise self to turn into a (rather tall) goblin and managed to convince them that he was a new prisoner.

She has good charisma.

Now, I would have been more helpful, but I think I'm the only one in the party who can't see in the dark. After some other shennanigans, Enna convinced the goblins and an ogre that the villagers had escaped. With far fewer guards to worry about, we got the villagers out and back to their home that, since we'd arrived, had been overrun by goblins, bandits and orcs...in that order.

This is our entire party, including the DM. Now all we need is to actually group up again so I can give them their tiny selves.

Can't...stop...painting!

I picked up this guy along with Enna from the previous post. It seemed like a good idea at the time. After a couple of days spent agonizing over which colour to paint him, I ended up choosing a traditional red.

I painted him so quickly that I didn't come up with a name for him, but he's obviously the new kid on the block, looking to burn out some territory of his own.

The wings came out okay, although I probably could have been a little more sensitive when drybrushing.

He's sort of cute, in a way...

Incidentally, I got some of the very same Bones minis on my painting desk ATM. Nice to see them painted.

I also ended up with red for the small dragon. Somehow couldn't envision any other colour. Still pondering how to do the wings.

Being able to make up stories on the fly is super helpful at times and I'm glad it brings you joy! We need to meet up again sometime.

Incidentally, I got some of the very same Bones minis on my painting desk ATM. Nice to see them painted.

I also ended up with red for the small dragon. Somehow couldn't envision any other colour. Still pondering how to do the wings.

I was agonizing over what colour to do the dragon for ages. Red? Green? Yellow? I couldn't figure it out. I must have stopped painting for about, oh...three days. Dark times they were. As for the wings, try white or maybe a dark pink if you're set on red. They're super fun to paint, enjoy!

And now with no further ado...

This is Whip, another D&D character of mine. I have so many characters for 5th ed rolled up now that I think I either have a problem or over a dozen solutions.

Unlike other Tieflings, Whip was subjected to a horrible ritual that turned a certain cult leader into a regular human and a sweet little boy into a tiefling. Unfortunately, said ritual also took Whip's parents lives away and drove the lad crazy...but then he met a troop of spider monkeys and was taken in by them so...six of one, half a dozen of the other?

As time passed, Whip was eventually found by a wondering swordsman and his wife, a practiced brawler. Although they did teach him a lot, like basic communication, the importance of pants and why throwing poo at your enemies, while effective, is inappropriate. Unfortunately, it was not enough. The little Whip was plagued by nightmares of a future he couldn't properly articulate.

So, the swordsman and his wife brought him to a monastery where the boy learned a great deal about controlling his inner turmoil and how to do sweet flips and martial arts. As time passed, his dreams became more vivid. He said goodbye to the monks and set out to figure out the dreams on his own. Will he succeed? Well my dex-based fighter will have to die first, but then time will tell...

The miniature is Bushido's Haru. His head was a bit skinnier than I expected, but dang was it fun to paint!

Can't...stop...painting!

This chap is known as The Druid. He had a name once, before he gave himself to the forest.

When he was younger, The Druid's home village came under attack by a gang of bandits that were too great to overcome, but he managed to escape and found shelter deep in the forest near his home.

That night, The Druid learned much from the forest, like how to survive, how to call for help...and how to fight back.

After a few days, The Druid returned home and caused such damage to the bandits that the other villagers were able to fight back. There were losses, but not as many as the bandits endured before they finally escaped.

As the fires of battle died down, The Druid knew that he couldn't stay. The forest was his home now and nothing could change that. He still watches over that village, ensuring that nobody tries to enslave them again.

The model is Hordes' Bradigus Thorle. The face was a bit fiddly to paint, but overall it was a fun miniature to paint.

I need to get back to TAFE. I'm almost half way through my grey mountain!

This is another D&D character. He's a Tiefling sorcerer who calls himself Noone.

Hey kid, what's your name?
Noone.

Wierd name, that.
Oh, I have another one, but I don't use it.
Why not?
Kids used to tell me that noone could love a monster like me and I wanted to be loved, so I became Noone.
Can't argue with that logic.

Well, you should be able to make use of this.
W...wait, there's so much gold in here! Do you really want me to have it?
What are you waiting for, boy? Sounds like you've got some folks to prove wrong.
I won't let you down, sir!

After spending most of the gold in a nearby bakery, Noone then decided to become an adventurer with what was left over.

The model is malifaux's iggy (undoubtedly the fiddliest model I've put together in a while) with a backpack from pig iron productions and some green stuff.

Why...can't...I...stop?

So, there's this guy who was going to join our D&D group. Then he couldn't. Now he can. This is his kenku, whose name is [      ]. I'm not kidding. No name, just silence. I guess it makes sense, given how kenku can imitate any sound, but what did his parents yell out when he misbehaved? Guess I'll find out soon enough.

[         ]'s a rogue. He's no assassin, more of a traditional thief and hates fighting. Hey, more glory for me!

I wasn't sure if I should go for a dark green for his clothing or a navy blue. I think the blue was a better choice in the end.

Here he is, trying to steal a thing through an open window. Will he succeed? Probably, he's got pretty good dexterity.

And now our group is complete...I sure hope nobody else joins, we're running out of chairs!

Once upon a time, there was a man. He had humble beginnings, but he made himself noteworthy in service to his duke and even caught the eye of said duke's daughter.

Not desiring scandal but knowing his daughter's stubbornness, the duke secretly gave the man a title. The two were married, had kids and were generally happy.

Then, he died.

That was years ago. His family are nothing more than a fuzzy memory. All he knows for sure is that he must guard the crypt...guard the crypt...guard the crypt...

I'm back, with more reaper!

This handsome fellow is Roan Whittaker. Born a half elf, he was sold into slavery when he was a child.

Most of his owners were terrible, but a gnome treated him with respect and dignity, promoting him from a garden slave to a home slave. He was nearly free...until the gnome lost him in a game of cards.

His most recent master was a cruel man who beat Roan for the slightest infraction. When he could take no more, Roan lashed out with a glob of acid.

Horrified by the new power that he'd been 'blessed' with, Roan ran away, desperate to avoid anyone who might see him as a murderer. He purchased new clothes as soon as he could, as well as a new staff to make himself look like a proper wizard, rather than...whatever he is.

The model is Reaper's Piers, Young Mage. Aside from a few fiddly bits, I loved painting this one. His relatively passive pose is perfect for a shy, awkward sorcerer who would rather hide than fight.

This is Daniel, a scrappy little fighter.

After being rescued from a gang of goblins by a warrior some time ago, Daniel has trained almost nonstop to emulate his hero, even down to his accent.

The tunic turned out pretty well, I reckon.

This photo...could've turned out better. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Not gonna lie, I thought this was a girl when I ordered the models and I never really came up with a good name for him while I was painting him. I mean, it could be a girl, but I think it's meant to represent a boy the more I looked at it.

I figure this fella never really mugged anyone or stole anything, but he's kept a lot of missing coins for himself without trying to find the owner...

I kind of like how his little bag turned out.

This is Sasha, a strong barbarian girl who don't need no rules.

This adventurous, often rebellious youth travels with her nomadic family, seeing parts of the world that city dwellers can only dream of.

Although she refuses to settle down and stay in the camp, her family can't argue with her results. That tail that hangs from her belt? It was her first kill.

'Oi, you looking at me?'

This is Percy. He might not be the most powerful wizard his age, or even the most competent...but that doesn't stop this bespectacled wonder from trying!

The inspiration for most of his clothing was Presto, from the D&D cartoon. You know the one...

I kind of wish I'd been more gentle when I was painting his hair, but it turned out okay.

I mostly took this picture to give a better look at his glasses...or at least one half of them.

The models were reaper's Adventuring Kids #1 and 2. Overall, I found them fun to paint. Also, thanks to Bertrand for the bases. They worked out a treat.

Cheers Berty! We'll have to paint together again sometime soon, before I run out of stuff!
If that happens you are doing it wrong.
You are supposed to run out of life before you run out of models to paint. :-)
That is why we all try and collect the biggest Lead Mountain. LOL

That's certainly seems to be a dream of Bertie's, but when one is between jobs, one's grey mountain becomes more of a grey hill. Ah, well I've got two things left to paint and about four weeks until moab, so maybe I'll get lucky and still have something to paint by then.

For now, let's look at the third last thing on my grey hill.

This is Aramil Goldleaf, a half-elf fighter from the village of Riverstead.

As the son of adventurers, Aramil was always a little rambunctious, but he was content to remain home as his friends went off to find their fortunes. Hey, someone's got to sell these fledgling adventurers their first swords!

After taking a thrashing from some local bullies who were picking on his brothers, Aramil received daily training from his mum. His form was atrocious during the fight, according to her.

After nearly losing his life during a minor demonic incursion, Aramil announced his decision to travel the world. Knowing that he was just going to go off and do it anyway, his parents outfitted him with the best equipment that they could provide. Now, he's off looking for wrongs to right and bandits to fight...but not necessarily in that order.

The model is the Crown of Fangs reclamation squire. Although it was originally a female model, I figured that I could make it male with a steady hand and a sharp knife...well, I had a sharp knife at least!

And here we are, the last of the last. Good thing it's moab this weekend!

Thistle (on the left) was found abandoned in the woods by a circle of druids, thus creating the premise for fantasy TV's newest reality show: Several Druids and a Baby.

Acorn burst out of the ground on Thistle's fifth birthday and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

One day, the pair came across a trio of goblins. For an accomplished spellcaster and his elemental pal, they'd be no problem, right?

Unfortunately, one of the goblins was a spellcaster himself. The creature threw a vile bolt of magic at Thistle, who would have died if not for Acorn's intervention. After killing off the goblins for this act, Thistle managed to recover Acorn's core, which he holds closely to this day until he can find a way to bring his friend back.

The models are Wizkids wardlings. They scrubbed up pretty well, I reckon.

Cheers!

Wait, what was that skulking around in the bush?

It's Longreach! Inspired by a shred of text I read during the end times about gold-crested skinks, I decided to paint one up when I found him hiding in one of my bitz boxes.

After completing his duty to the slaan to activate Xlanhuapec's temple-ship with his spawn brothers, Longreach now scouts the mortal realms in search of lost artifacts and nests of skaven to slay...that is, when he has the time.

He is indeed very small, but his spear makes up for it.

Drybrushing is unpredictable, but handy.

This is probably my favourite shot of him. I think he came from the bastiladon kit, which I added a standard skink arm and shield to, along with the big spear from the stegadon kit because I wanted to use it.

Nice thread, love the little back stories

Cheers! I sometimes come up with things just while painting, or when I'm putting stuff online.

But do you know what sucks?

Being the last guardian of a temple in the middle of the desert. It's hot, it's lonely and there's nobody around to hear your various witty remarks.

To make matters worse, the temple was more or less forgotten by the rest of the world, so all the guardian's monologues about foolish trespassers were never put to use.

That's when it hit him: advertisement! If nobody came to him, he'd go out and spread some rumours of a temple filled with treasure! Then he'd have something to do!

With his mind made up, the guardian checked the temple's various traps and headed out to find some potential interlopers...or at least something more interesting than watching the dunes.

The model is reaper's avatar of thoth. I got it at moab's paint and take station this year.

Cheers! The avatar's a little bigger than human size. Unfortunately, not big enough to be an ushabti...

Death happens a lot in skirmish games. So much so, that it might be a good idea to have some graves or corpse counters on hand...that, or just something to hide behind.

I did a few with fancy stone headstones and some with bodgy wooden ones with various levels of grass covering them. Doesn't matter if you're fancy or not though, death'll come for you. (and it'll be soon with rolls like mine!)

The graves are from bplaser. They're probably a smidge big, but it won't matter in the long run. They came in a pack of ten, but I'll be giving the others a post-apocalyptic flavour.

I'm back! For now, at least!

This construct was made at some point in the past, during a great war by a wizard who needed a little more protection.

The construct was given many gifts to complete its tasks, but the greatest of those gifts was that of versatility.

With its gifts, the construct was able to repair itself when damaged and survived long after its creator passed away.

It still defends the ruined tower that was once its master's grand home with as much vigor as it had when it was first made.

The model is the frostgrave large construct. I might have gone a bit heavy with the varnish, but it looks fine in person.

Whelp, guess I can't stop the fantasy train!

This is Big Mac. He's a big guy who prefers to be left alone. If you manage to befriend him though, he'll stick to you like glue.

Some say Mac was a regular man once, but when he came to the defense of a small woodland sprite, he was blessed with incredible strength.

Now, Mac's life is pretty much the same as it was. He wonders, he collects stuff and then he goes for a drink. Granted, he needs a bigger chair, but his money's as welcome as anyone's.

Nobody's sure where he got the hammer from, but good luck getting it away from him!

The miniature is Meck from Zenit Miniatures. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

I'm back, with one of the biggest boys on my grey mountain!

This is Gus. He's a giant.

Gus had another, more gianty name, but he forgot it when he was captured and bound by terrible magics.

Forced to perform in a carnival, Gus could do no more than act as instructed and watch as his homeland grew ever more distant.

Of course, magic isn't always reliable. Eventually, Gus broke free of his bonds and after going on a small killing spree, he set about the task of returning home...even if he's not too sure where it is from here.

The model is the giant from zenit miniatures. I took advantage of all the tasty flesh to try out some freehand war paint. On the plus side, I think it turned out pretty well. On the down side, one of my brushes went full banana peel in the process.

Look, over there! A new mini!

This is The Boss, one of the orphans who live in scrap forest. Robin likes to think he's in charge, but it's The Boss who gets things done.

No matter where he goes, The Boss is always followed by his sword-rabbit.

When asked about the doll he carries around, The Boss gets flustered. Far more flustered than one would expect.

The miniature is Zenit miniature's Bossy model. Didn't come up with a proper name for him, so it's The Boss until I do. There were two antennae, but one snapped off and vanished into the aether because it is tiny.

What are you, stupid? It's clearly Tom and Joe, the dragonfly brothers!

Upon hearing about a forest of scrap, Tom and Joe were drawn like moths to a flame. They found the reality of the situation a bit disappointing, but they made do with what they had.

These mischievous pranksters butt heads with Robin and The Boss, but their inventions more than make up for their pranks.

The models are Dragonfly A and B from Zenit miniatures. I used fluff from a recent purchase at reverse garbage to try and simulate clouds, but history will be the judge of how effective it is...history, and the internet.

excellent (and new to me) miniatures and painting.
love your background write-ups.

Cheers man! I honestly came across these minis by accident. When I saw them at a miniatures convention, I knew I had to grab 'em. The fact that the box they came in calculated to about $1.30 a mini helped...and I'm still not done!

Speaking of not being done, I present The Termite Terrors, the scouts and lookouts of Scrap Town.

Cole, Frankie and Alex are masters of stealth and camouflage (at least according to them) If you see them, it's either too late, you've been deemed non-threatening or Alex got distracted by a butterfly. Again.

If it needs finding, odds are one of these three can find it...or they're the reason it's missing in the first place.

The miniatures are zenit miniatures' ants and ant boss. Overall, they were fun to paint but since Cole's only attached to the base by one foot, he did break off a couple of times. Nothing a little superglue couldn't fix, though.

Another denizen of Scrap Town appears!

Some kids are sneaky. Some kids are cheeky. Then, there's Beetle.

There's nothing that Beetle likes more than a good fight. Friend? Enemy? Doesn't matter so long as it's fun.

Beetle might not be much for thinking, but when it comes to war, there's nobody quite as uniquely talented.

Despite his protests, Beetle does have a soft side, as evidenced by the doll that hangs off his belt.

The miniature is Zonik II age, from Zenit Miniatures. I mucked up putting the hands on, but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm back! Again!

This is Robin and his friends. Robin was the first to find Scrap Forest, when he was on the run for using magic without a permit.

The first friend he made was Hangman (bottom left). Soon, Bucky (bottom right) Puff (top right) and Blobby joined him.

Over time, other kids were drawn to the makeshift buildings Robin made. They banded together and managed to secure the general area, but sometimes he wonders...

Do the others know they're not alive anymore?

The models are Zenit Miniatures' Imaginist and Chimeras. There were a few frustrating details on the Imaginist, but overall it was tons of fun to paint these. Now that they're done, I might have to dig deep and greedily for my next project...

This is Gramps. He had another name a long time ago, but it was erased when he joined a cult in his youth.

Fortunately, he managed to escape the cult with the help of a merciful adventurer, two monkeys and a bag of ball bearings. You kind of had to be there, but it was hilarious.

After years of aimless wondering, Gramps finally found peace in a small village by becoming its healer. His methods are unorthodox, but he gets results.

Gramps was fine where he was, until he saw a sorry group of adventurers. Then another. Then another. Eventually, he had enough. He picked up his bone scythe and orc-skin scroll (who would've thought they're pink on the inside?) and he set out to show these young punks how it's done.

The mini is reaper's darkrasp, evil priest. I won it for coming first in a D&D gauntlet. It was arguably one of the cheapest prizes, but I wanted it and now he's mine. The base is from secret weapon. All in all, it was a fun mini to paint with just enough detail to be interesting, without being overwhelming.

Hshaa was hatched in the deep darkness of a dank swamp. From an early age, they was skilled in the arcane, but there are only so many things that one can learn in such a place.

After packing their bags, Hshaa set off in search of new magics to learn.

The mini is a wizards cleric of Logzed. I picked it up for five bucks and I don't regret it.

Who's this shuffling out of the woods? Prince Orisk the Golden!

Orisk loves gold and fighting as much as he hates elves, which is quite a bit.

As per tradition, Orisk is traveling through the lands to understand other cultures and learn how to work with them instead of starting another three-generation-long war.

The model's a GW dwarf I think? Snagged it for five bucks from a second hand mini sale at my FLGS. Turned out pretty well, I reckon.

Good work.

Cheers! I did as well as I could.

Here's my newest project: The Mountain.

The Mountain's clan was once small and weak, constantly attacked by a clan that lived by the ocean.

When The Mountain was born, it was seen as a sign. He was a huge, healthy baby whose strength only grew as he got older.

The fight isn't over, but with this man leading the charge, it's only a matter of time...

The model is General Shan, from Ex Manus studios. It was pretty fun to paint.

I'm back, with a new dragon!

This particular dragon was born from a gnome's simple dream: to create a portable firestarter.

As with most gnomish inventions, it got plenty out of hand.

Rumour says that if you can climb on its back and reset its gearbox, it will follow your commands. Who's to say if that's true or not, though...

The model is Reaper's wyrmgear. It was a bit trickier to paint than I expected, largely because I decided to try out freehand on the wings. Pretty happy with how it turned out, overall.

Really nice to see some of the Zenit Orphan's painted, I've had a load of them for ages but never gotten around to it. Though I have loads of free time at the moment due to no internet for the next 3 weeks outside work so might crack them out once I'm done with my current minis.

Wyrmgear looks great, nice use of the large flat areas in the wings. Random question are the pegs on his right legs the wrong shape on yours? I've tried looking it up and no one else seems to mention the same issue. Not even a miscast or anything on mine, they're just straight up the wrong pegs for the slots.  :?

Do it, man! They're wonderfully characterful little miniatures and there's a surprising amount of detail to be found.

The right front leg was a bit fiddly to attach, but it wasn't anything a bit of clipping couldn't fix. Other than that, I think it was okay?

Anyway, on to new things!

This is Marko. He's a blacksmith by trade.

Even though he's not much of a fighter, he'll gladly take his hammer and fight against anything that threatens his hometown.

It's odd that he relies on his hammer when he's got a perfectly good sword hanging there, but to each their own...

The model's an essex miniatures dwarf. I was so stoked to paint this one I got it done in like two days. Plenty of fun to paint, even if the shield gave me trouble.

Cheers, I nearly went mad painting the dragon, but it was worth it in the end! The dwarf was just plain fun and a great little project after something so big.

Now, onto my newest project - the Sea Saw!

Do ya...do ya get it?

Capable of holding eight medium humanoids (or four goliaths) the Sea Saw's magical sails unfurl with a single command from its skipper.

Although it's small, it's more than capable of keeping up with larger ships.

Thanks to little more than elbow grease and a severe talking to for anyone who messes up the deck, the Sea Saw is kept in relatively pristine condition.

The model is a 28mm longboat from bplaser. After looking at the website, I just realized that I put it together slightly wrong, but it's not the end of the world. There were a few tricky spots to reach, but that was my silly fault for putting everything together before painting it.

I'm pretty glad I finally got to paint Gotrek Gurnisson. He was hard to get a hold of around here!

I love Gotrek. He appears to have a one-track mind about finding his doom, but he's oddly compassionate to his companions for someone who claims to not care.

He's old, he's cranky, he's got a great beard, he's Gotrek

Of course, this isn't all that came with the kit...

When given the opportunity to paint up dead skaven, who could pass it up?

I have plenty of scenery, but not a lot of objective markers, so it's a good opportunity.

Why the seraphon weapon? Well, the dwarves aren't the only ones with a grudge against the skaven...also, there's a gap in the top where Gotrek's meant to fit.

The kit is GW's Gotrek Gurnisson. I was hoping to leave him unglued so I could either display him or use him in games, but given that it's almost impossible to get him on the display base after gluing the rest up, he's for gaming.

Next we have The Welcome House, a charming little cottage that just appears when it's needed.

Nobody's sure when The Welcome House first appeared, but anyone who walks through its door finds their weapons magically locked into their sheaths, unable to be drawn. Aggressive thoughts are somehow suppressed and the worst injury suffered within its walls was a particularly biting insult some years ago.

Nobody's sure what The Welcome House is. A wizard's pet project? A benign mimic? A well-meaning sorcerer's attempt to spread a little peace throughout the realms?

We may never know for sure, but The Welcome House is always a good sight for weary wanderers on the road.

The model is building 34 village cottage from bplaser. Only now do I realize that the door wasn't supposed to be glued in, which would have made painting the fireplace MUCH easier. Overall, it was a pretty fun painting job, aside from a few fiddly bits that were largely due to my own self-sabotage.

Hoo boy, it's been a while. In my defense, a lot of my shame pile was post-apocalyptic in nature. Now I'm on to new stuff!

This is a realmshaper engine. I don't have much of a story for this one, but maybe it'll make its own legacy after a few games?

There's so much detail packed into this thing, it's crazy.

As I said previously, it's a realmshaper engine from GW. Honestly, I was stoked to have anything for the seraphon line released, so I had to grab it. It was fun to paint overall, but so dang frustrating at some points. If I build another one, I'll likely use the vineless configuration.

Boom! Another set of miniatures done!

I nearly passed up on these tokens, but then I had an idea to set them up as magical shields.

The tokens were made by warsenal, but I'm not sure if they're still available since I found them pretty deep in a bargain bin. Overall, I'm happy with how they turned out. Could things have been better if I stuck with my original plan of making them all grassy? Maybe, maybe not. I'm content with them this way though and that's what matters.

Thanks! True, they were originally sci-fi tokens, but I couldn't stop myself. Luckily, the bases should work in some sci-fi settings.

Now for new news. I haven't quite named this fella, but his role is to seek out lost artifacts before they fall into the wrong hands.

Wearing feathers that represent the night sky, the seeker treads hidden paths in search of his quarry.

While he's perfectly content to get what he needs without bloodshed, he knows the world isn't always that simple. Besides, what's a little bloodshed between friends?

The model's GW's Skink Starpriest. It's one of my favourite miniatures (aside from a few fiddly bits) so when a painting contest came up, it was an easy choice.

Looks like I might have improved a bit over my last attempt, not that it's super bad.

Cheers! I didn't come close to winning (no surprise there) but I loved painting it and you will too, once you get around to it.

Now for the new stuff. Here we have a gaggle of ghosts who gambled...and lost.

With their vast fortunes, they tried to stave off death, but they died anyway.

Nagash, who is generally against that sort of thing, took their impudent attempts to live personally and cursed them to be weighed down with their riches for all enternity.

Now draped in torn purple and blue, these spirits seek something, anything, that they could use to buy their freedom. But what could equal the price of a soul?

Their warden could free them at any time with those keys if Nagash willed it...Nagash does not will it.

The models, as you could probably guess, are GW nighthaunt. These specific ones came from the first issue of mortal realms. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the sculpts, aside from a few hard to reach areas. I probably didn't make things easier with my choice of basing, but such is life. This last guy was only half a ghost, but a bit of green stuff and a spare hand sorted him out well enough.

Here I am. After a catastrophic failure involving a dropperbottle, a bad wi-fi connection and my own silly impatience, I finished these three fine folks.

These are three Tempest Lords, a stormhost of the Stormcast Eternals. Before their reforging, they were noble rulers who fought with bravery against the forces of Chaos.

Upon reforging, Sigmar told them that they were worth twelve mortal soldiers, a comment that they take to heart. They believe that to fall in battle before defeating twelve enemies is a sign of weakness, which is a bit silly. Still, they're an alright bunch.

The models are from the mortal realms magazine, which was a pretty good bargain. I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, but my freehand still needs a bit of work, as you can probably see. This was the last thing on my grey mountain, so I guess I'll not be as active for a while.

Great miniatures and good output I like those wraiths.

Cheers! Despite some fiddly bits, they were fun to paint.

In a moment of fidgety desire to paint something, I had a crack at redoing the miniatures from the Betrayal at Baldur's Gate game.

I'll admit they didn't come up as good as some of the other things I've done, but they're a different scale to what I'm used to and my brushes chose RIGHT NOW to start doing a banana peel impression.

Admittedly, part of my reason for starting this project was because I wanted to straighten up the wizard's staff and the drow's sword with some wire...also, the half-orc's eyes were printed half way up his forehead and his hair was party silver and partly brown due to poor positioning.

Honestly, given the state they were in? I felt like I had no choice. There's a few bits I could have done better, but overall I'm content with how they turned out.

Nice paintjob!

Cheers! There is a tiny bit on the helmet that I should probably clean up, but you can't really notice it if you aren't super obsessive about every angle, so it stays there as proof that it's okay to be imperfect...until I get less lazy.

Now to get onto what I've been painting recently: the Nehekara Skull-Crushers! This is going to be a big 'un, so grab a cup of tea or something before you keep scrolling.

Hailing from an oasis near the boarder of Nehekara and the Southlands, this plucky team of lizardmen came across the game by chance. Since then, they've trained relentlessly to prove they're just as good as the other teams (or at least as bloodthirsty!)

Chameleon Skinks' main strategy is to turn into innocent berry bushes to confuse the slower-witted (or just hungrier) teams to grab the ball and leg it while the legging is good, the Skull-Crushers are not only a powerful team, but a clever one when they need to be.

And that's the whole team! The miniatures are, as you've probably guessed, GW's Blood Bowl Lizardmen Team. Overall, the painting part was pretty fun (aside from a few parts which were made more difficult due to self-sabotage) and I'm not terribly sure why they included slottabases with minis that didn't have slots and I'm still slightly afraid to pick up the chameleon skink with his tongue out in case his ankle breaks AGAIN, but aside from those issues? A pretty good kit. I've also got a number of spare parts and transfers, which I'll hopefully find a use for in the near future.

You can ask him yourself, but I'm not sticking around to find out!

This model is GW's Daughters of Khaine Assassin. I've wanted to paint one up for ages, but my grey mountain was too high to include it until recently. I somewhat regret putting the head on when I constructed the body, but it didn't hurt much. It's a wonderful pose which leaves most of the body easy to reach, but it does have a nasty habit of tipping over if you don't pay attention when you're putting it down.

I'm back, with a new group of lizards!

It's the Starblood Stalkers, the Seraphon's first group for Warhammer Underworlds.

Not sure why my lighting was all over the shop on these photos, but unfortunately I can't control the clouds...yet.

Ha, lizard butts.

Not sure where those little white dots came from, they're not on the minis...just assume it's magic or something.

Three more lads, probably not in the best possible pose.

I painted up the chameleon to make it look like it was dropping its camouflage as it blew into its pipe. Probably could've done with a bit more orange on the cheeks, but it's fine.

Lots of blood on the saurus' weapon, the way it should be.

And that's that! Aside from the picture quality, I'd say they turned out pretty well, overall.

Got to the bottom of my shame pile, so I picked up these two, Danny on the left and Princess Fia on the left.

While Fia is fortunate enough to grow up in the lap of luxury, Danny has to work hard to keep fresh water coming for his family.

While this pair have basically nothing in common, who knows what fate has in store for them...

These two are the Wizkids Deepcut Minis children. I picked them up from Dice Arcade, a little shop that opened recently. There were a few fiddly bits, particularly around Danny's bucket, but overall they weren't too bad to paint up. They were also the last things on my painting pile, so it might be a while until I post something new.

Just gotta hope the paintin' shakes don't compel me to start a new army or something until my order comes in...

So all the little cousins came right back.

The minis are Hasslefree's medieval children. They're small, very hard to photograph but they come up pretty well. I did try and get another rear-facing shot, but that was the best one I could get.

This is Itza'hua. Roughly translated, his name means 'misty one.'

Itza'hua would be content to spread the words of the Slaan that were given to him by the starseers, but humans were approaching and someone had to go check them out.

You can probably guess who was given that task.

After being blessed with a cloak of feathers and some other magical trinkets, Itza'hua set out to examine the encroaching humans. Were they allies? Foes? Chaos worshippers? He didn't know, but he was going to find out.

The model is GW's skink priest with feathered cloak and OH MY GOODNESS I'd forgotten how bad finecast could be. The flash and mould lines weren't super bad, but every feather had this little triangle of extra resin linking it to the next feather below it. I nearly went mad cutting each part off hand by hand, but it was worth it.

nice thread - like your lizardmen in particular.

Cheers! I love me some laser dinosaurs, so I guess I put a bit more effort into them subconsciously.

And speaking of effort...

This is Grak'yik. He might not have much smarts as other goblins.

What he does have though, are spiders.

The spiders eat, Grak'yik gets shiny gold. Everybody wins...except for the poor suckers they find.

Grak'yik and his pals come to us courtesy of GW's skuttleboss on gigantic spider. Finecast...hoo boy, it's not great on these bigger models. The fact I couldn't find instructions for sticking the legs in means I likely put some of them in the wrong place. Thanks to a stone wall, I gained a little more real estate to glue the legs to the base. Overall it was pretty fun, despite the challenges I faced. The base gave me an excuse to buy some new grass tufts from a new hobby shop, which was nice.

Rise from the grave, thread! Rise!

So um, long time no...update? Lowest room in the house got soaked worse than it's ever been thanks to the recent rains and the mould's basically taken over. Since that's where I normally paint, my usual schedule was interrupted until I managed to get everything out. Surprisingly, none of my books were mouldy, which is nice. Then GW's recent controversies came to light and I just couldn't buy from them directly and I looked into Malifaux for an alternative. I'd post what I've painted from that, but I just can't be bothered making another thread to show them off at the moment.

Anyway, fantasy minis. That's what you're here for, so here's something I went and did.

Like many Namarti, N'kari is desparate for souls so he can live longer.

With only two of the required twelve souls he needs for a full life, N'kari fears every day could be his last.

Day after day, he trains with his bow after finishing his construction work so that he will prove worthy of his share.

Of course, he doesn't push to the front of the line, allowing others to take their share of the souls despite his time running out...

The model is a Namarti Reaver. I know I said I haven't bought from GW directly in a while, but he was a freebie. I added little waves of liquid green stuff to the base to simulate the ocean. Would I put in that much effort for a whole army? Probably not. There's likely a cheaper option out there if I wanted to go that way.

I added some extra lizardmen bits I had in my bits box to pretty up the base. Pretty sure they're from the metal slaan mage priest kit and the temple guard set, but I could be wrong. Overall, not a bad little project.

Love the animation on your spider and all the lizardmen.

Cheers! Most of the credit probably goes to the sculptors for animation, I just put paint on 'em.

And speaking of putting paint on things...

Here are three mighty castigators. In their former lives, there regularly hunted the beasts that lurked near their lands.

When beastmen invaded their lands, these nobles ran daring hit and run attacks on the invaders to ensure the safety of their people.

Of course, there's only so much three people can do against the endless rabble, so eventually they were brought low after days of fighting.

Much to Nagash's chagrin (as most things are) the three nobles were raised again into Sigmar's army. They might not enjoy all the work they must do, but they all believe it'll be worth it some day.

The models are GW's castigators. I managed to snag issue 3 of the Mortal Realms magazine for my birthday. Four models, a pot of paint and some reading materials for 20 bucks? Don't mind if I do...let someone get it for me.

But where's the gryph-hound, I hear you ask? Not to worry, it's on the way...

And here he is!

Zephyr was found alone, starving and seemingly the only surviving member of a failed Dawnbringer Crusade.

No matter what, Zephyr kept patrolling the point where the new settlement was meant to be built, ferociously keeping everyone away until he was eventually found and fed by three certain castigators.

Now fully fed and healthy, Zephyr works as hard as he can to ensure that what happens to that crusade never happens again...most of that work involves standing on things and yelling.

The model is GW's gryph hound, which comes with the castigators. It was honestly pretty nice to paint, despite a few hiccups along the way.

Now for the today's project...

This is a statue, clearly.

Whoever place it is probably long gone, so nature has begun to reclaim it.

They say it's good luck to find a statue like this when you're lost, but some people hear ghostly laughter if they linger too long near it, so I wouldn't set up camp if you can help it.

The model, if it can be called that, is a jizo statue that I pulled out of a capsule machine near work. I figured with a little sandpaper, a hobby knife and some green stuff, I could make it look more aged. Most of the sandpaper scratching was covered up with paint, but the carving looks a bit less sharp now and that helps imo. Makes for a nice bit of scatter terrain, imo.

Lovely figures and painting, that statue is a cracker.

Cheers! I'm not the best painter here by a ways, but I try to do better than I was yesterday and that's good enough for me.

Speaking of painting...

Looks like a new skelly's joined the ranks of the undead.

That's quite an old banner, I wonder what nation it represents?

Looks like either the skelly got into a few dust-ups, or the armour's previous owner did.

At least the shield's held up fairly well...except those parts...and that part.

The mini's one of GW's grave guard. The miniature of the month was supposed to be a 40k chaos cultist (I was going to call mine Jim from Accounting) but my local store was all out and the next nearest one seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. As compensation, I was allowed to grab a leftover mini from a previous month and since one can never have too many skeletons, I grabbed this fella. As for the banner, I went for old Sylvania.

Is my attempt completely accurate? No.

Does it look like someone who's never actually seen a dragon and is also a skeleton painted it? Yes.

I may have been influenced by those old medieval paintings of animals that don't exactly look the way they're supposed to when I painted it, which resulted in this. I'm pretty chuffed with how it turned out tbh.

With that, I have achieved what some might think is impossible: my pile of opportunity is completely empty. There's a bring and buy event next weekend near my house, so I probably won't be gone for long...

So...turns out having two jobs decreases how much time you have to paint, but I still managed a bit!

This is Vargach. When he hatched, he was the smallest of his clutch, but was the best in the field of annoyingness.

Wishing to be more than just 'the small one,' Vargach took on any beast that dared attack him.

After years of blood, sweat and more blood, Vargach managed to best at least one of every creature that lived near his home swamp.

Now, Vargach travels the world in search of bigger and better challenges to fight, win and maybe eat as well.

The model is an old Warhammer temple guard champion. I found him at moab. Usually, I'll make a circuit of the bring and buy before picking anything up, but the second I saw this guy, I said, 'oh, you're coming home with me!' The wave of nostalgia from opening the blister pack alone was worth the ten bucks and getting to paint one of these myself was delightful...although I did need to use a smattering of green stuff to keep the arm on while the superglue dried. Pretty sure I didn't have that problem back when metal models were common, or maybe I was just more patient back then.

So, turns out working two jobs really cuts into the hobby time. Anyway, photo time!

These are Sotek's Seekers.

Relatively young compared to other seraphon under Hua'xa's command, they are only sent out on scouting missions. Observe and report, that's their role.

Of course, interference is allowed if the situation calls for it...

To avoid creating unnecessary noise while out in the field, they use shining accessories to flash light signals to each other. If you see them, it's probably too late.

The models are some standard skinks that I greenstuffed to heck and back to turn them into chameleon skinks. I added some lava bases, which I did up all jungly for the unit. Overall, a fun little project.

Of course if he can't fix it, odds are he knows someone who can.

Does he know there's a snake on his staff? Probably not.

The model is a standard seraphon skink with a few extra bits to make him more magical, like the staff topper from the empire wizard kit, a considerable amount of green stuff and some feathers from the saurus warriors standard bearer. Not too shabby for a bunch of spare parts, if I do say so myself!

This'll be my last project for a hot minute. I might have the money for hobby time, but I don't have the time to buy new things right now...but I'll be back at it soon!

Now for my most recent finished job - Ylthari's Guardians from Warhammer Underworlds.

I saw this lot at a bring and buy recently and I figured, 'why not?'

I wasn't sure what colour scheme to go with, so I decided on an early Autumn theme. Turns out moss is still green in Autumn.

The photos aren't the best, but they're about the best I can do at the moment. Sorry about that. The branches and leaves were a bit fiddly to paint, but I reckon they turned out okay.

I'm back with something that isn't specifically fantasy, but could be used in a fantasy game!

It's kangaroos. Kangaroos are what I'm back with.

I'm not sure, but I think the one on the right COULD be a boy...

Just a good time for hanging around, is what it is.

These roos were made by eureka miniatures. I discarded basically all my restraint at moab this year (sue me, it's been like two years and my pile of opportunity ran out two weeks before the day I bought these; I had the shakes!) so there wasn't any chance that I was going home without these. It was a fun little project to do these two up and now I'm sorted for...whatever it is kangaroos could be used to represent.

Oops, I uploaded again.

No major backstory on this one; it's a contest piece.

Will I win? With 23 other entrants, it's unlikely, but I felt confident enough to enter.

The model is a Wizkids clockwork dragon. Apparently it's supposed to come with a base, but the game store got them on the cheap, which is guess is why there's no bases. A few bits were fiddly to reach with a brush, but I reckon it came out pretty nice.

I got some 'don't talk to me or my son' vibes from this shot...maybe I should find an even smaller clockwork dragon and keep the chain going!

This is Tobias Abbey, yet another one of my D&D characters...I did play this one once, I swear!

After being found at the front of a monastery dedicated to Chauntea in his dead mother's arms, the young half-orc was kept (after some discussion).

Acceptance came slowly, but eventually Tobias became loved not only by his adoptive family, but by the villagers who lived nearby...especially after the incident a few springs back when Mr. Jameson's prize bull got loose.

After rescuing an injured man on the road with a surprising burst of divine light, Tobias learned that his father, a bandit named Arkhan the Black, was still alive! While nobody was sure if Arkhan was still in the banditry business, Tobias still set out to meet him and if necessary? He'd bring his old man to justice.

Unfortunately, he didn't realize how many humans there were in the world! This is gonna take some time...

The mini is Reaper's Erick, Paladin Initiate. I challenged myself to get something noblebright from moab this year and what's more noble and bright than a starry-eyed paladin? Being a reaper model, it came with the usual hiccups and challenges that that implies, but I reckon it came out alright. Most of the problems aren't even visible when he's on the tabletop.

So...about that painting contest I mentioned?

I came third! An honourable mention would've been nice, but I'm down for third! Tough competition, but somehow I managed to pull victory out of my butt and paintbrushes.

Now, onto today's pile of pictures.

Got some spooky ladies here: The Brides of Nagash!

Obsessed with pleasing Nagash with their magical talents, the Brides found themselves raised in eternal service to the object of their desire.

Of course, Nagash has more than enough sycophants already, so he sends them off to seek out magical secrets...as far from him as possible.

With not enough of a will to realize that Nagash hates their fawning, they willingly go along with their orders in an attempt to get him to notice them.

The models are GW's Myrmourn Banshees. Despite the fiddly areas I didn't notice until it was too late, they were pretty fun to paint. The way they float through the scenery on the bases is pretty dang neat, as is the fact I got them for twelve bucks.

A small update this time.

Get it? Because he's small.

The mini is Reaper Mini's Lou. It was a fun little project to undertake. The tentacles were a bit fiddly to paint, but they worked out alright. I originally got him to paint for spooktober, but I didn't get to him in time. Sure, I could've saved him for this year, but that doesn't solve the problem of wanting to paint him now.

A couple endless spells today, the chronomantic cogs and quicksilver swords.

I painted both up to match the general vibe of my seraphon, since that army can summon bound endless spells that aren't quite as powerful, but can't be used by my opponents, which will be quite helpful for my next project...

Not much to talk about. They chop stuff up and suck souls until they explode.

These spells, like the others, came from GW at some point, but I got them second hand from a tabletop convention. They turned out pretty well, if I had to judge.

This fierce fellow is Reeve Raukov, as the absolute youngest member of the Blackpowder/Raukov family...for now.

As the absolute youngest, Reeve was kitted out in the best equipment his family could afford to keep him safe when he goes adventuring.

Of course, he is quite the swordsman, even without the fancy equipment. Who do you think managed to kill that giant bat on his shoulder?

He's no slouch with a pistol, either.

Reeve is an empire battle standard bearer I bought second hand. The banner had snapped off, so I just lopped off the banner arms, re-positioned the head and popped on a couple of spare arms I had lying around. I'd been looking for the perfect excuse to use that sword for ages and now? Now I'd found it.

With that, my Empire/CoS army now has a character or unit for each of my little cousins...of course some of my cousins have gone off and had kids of their own and CoS is due for a big update, so who knows what I'll do in the future?

Did some skeletons because of course I did.

Brimming with necromantic energies, these five skeletons work in tandem to overcome more powerful foes.

The two archers harry targets into a funnel, whereupon the spear wielders keep them in place...

Then the swordsman rushes in to finish off whatever's left.

These five are Oathmark skellies. Picked up five with some extra bits for twelve bucks and figured why not? You can't have too many skellies. They were a bit fiddly to assemble (and I misplaced one of the shields during painting) but I like how they turned out.

As you probably worked out, they're old warhammer dwarfs. Got them at moab last year. I'm going to see if I can sell them at the same place this year for a bit of profit...but then again I'm pretty happy with how they turned out...I might just keep 'em if nobody wants them.

Cheers! Never can have too many skellies, as they say.

These however, are not skellies.

Haha, toad butt.

The minis are GW's Ripperdactyls. Got them on the cheap from moab last year, so it was nice to finally paint something that'd had been on my list for a while. Some say I may have put too many greeblies on the base, but I say I could've added more if not for the limitations of our three-dimensional universe. The jars are from Eureka Miniatures.

I kept the dactyls and riders separated from the bases to make storage and transport easier, but we'll see if that was worth it. It took me a while to paint due to the sub assemblies I made, but the end result was worth it imo.

I like the variety that skirmish games provide not having to paint a 1000 of the same figure. :D

Cheers Berty! Whenever I don't know what to paint something, I usually fall back on greens. The gems themselves aren't too tricky either: just black, red, lighter red, orange and a stripe of white after the orange and a dot of white in the black before some gloss varnish.

Didn't need gems for these two, but Toh and Kata don't need fancy accessories to do their job.

Masters of stealth (at least as far as non-chameleon skinks are concerned) Toh and Kata recover lost relics for their masters.

They have faced setbacks, but none severe enough to disrupt the Great Plan.

As you've likely surmised, Toh and Kata are Warhammer skinks. Toh was miniature of the month a few months ago and Kata was the extra skink from my ripperdactyl kit. I figured since I was painting one skink, why not two? Pretty chuffed with how they turned out, especially since I did most of the work in one night with Constable Bertrand, who made a silly comment that went on to inspire their names.

This is Lord Hieronymous.

As the second born son of a powerful ruler, Hieronymous studied the arcane arts, while his older, sickly brother was set to inherit the throne.

Now and again, he would receive whispers from without and within his own family to bump his brother off. It wouldn't have been much of a surprise if he just keeled over, after all. He could have everything. He refused, which consigned him to a life of preventing assassination attempts.

When Hieronymous finally had to lay down his life in defense of his brother and a group of civilians, he was reforged as a stormcast eternal. Not much has changed upon gaining a new life, but he does have a little more time to study the arcane.

The model is a Lord Incantor. I thought I'd missed out on buying this bad boy, but I found a copy of the magazine he came with at a place near work. It was the last one, so I took my shot. Not a bad little model to pick up and considerably cheaper than buying the $85 game it's now packaged with.

I seem to have a decent number of stormcast now. Can't say I saw this coming, but that does seem to be the way things are.

Well, I finally went and done it. I got to the bottom of my pile of opportunity.

This is The Big Fella, a dire troll.

Sometimes when a troll needs to regenerate, something goes wrong.

What exactly the 'something' was in The Big Fella's case, is up for some debate.

Now, he roams about taking out cows or silly adventurers who dare to cross his path.

Having so many heads hasn't changed his opinions on hygiene.

He's a lot harder to sneak up on earlier, that's for sure.

Theoretically, the majority of The Big Fella's brain is in this head, but who can say for sure?

The model is the dire troll from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures. It was my third prize place for a local painting contest. Sure, the tuft mohawk isn't perfectly centered and there's probably parts that could be better, but it came out great in my opinion.

I should probably confess something about my first sentence. While The Big Fella was at the bottom of my pile of opportunity, moab was last weekend, so now I have another pile of opportunity to paint when I can. I'm pretty stoked about what I got this year.

Hey, there he is! What a strapping angry lad. I think the crazy grass tuft hair Mohawk came out really well. Very fitting.

I do not want to meet him in a back alley or around a corner, day or night. Too many arms and heads for my liking. :D

You don't meet him in the alleyway, he IS the alleyway!  lol

On a slightly less spooky note, meet Catarin and Murr.

Catarin's main claim to fame is handing a ceremonial blade to the king of their region during his coronation.

Some would argue that it is no basis for a system of government, but it works well enough.

As for Murr? Well, Murr is Murr. He just hangs around, floating about and eating small fish.

The model is GW's Isharann Tidecaster. Picked it up from Moab for relatively cheap with all the bits glued and ready to go. It's a nice little model to paint up, although a few bits behind the cape were a bit fiddly to paint.

Cracking work Pete, it's honestly amazing to consider where wargaming has come from, with simple 2 sided moulds making flat Napoleonics to this! The depth of Murr the fish is just mind blowing. It's designed to be shown on a turn table isn't it!

Looks fab, and swords given out by watery wretches is a perfectly fine way to set governments. None of my bretonnian peasants have ever complained about it.  ;D

Yeah, strange moistened women distributing swords IS a valid system of government!

And speaking of mind-blowing fishies...

This is Zirrus and his fishy friend, Argo.

Zirrus is skilled at snagging souls, thanks to Argo chasing the right prey to him at the right time.

Of course, if the prey didn't insist on fighting back, things would be much easier.

Dun dun...dun duuun...

The model is GW's Isharann soulrender. I still can't believe that Argo just...floats there. It's ridiculous! The model itself came out pretty nice, too.

great work. astonishing to me, that this fishing is not breaking off when painting it. what is your inside, is the plastic sturdy enough or is there some real danger involved when playing?

Honestly, it's just being held on by the hair thing! Since it was assembled when I bought it, I wouldn't have a clue how it's hanging there. It's fairly sturdy, but enough pressure would probably break it off if you tried, but it's fine for gaming.

Now for something that broke A LOT while painting...

Nobody's sure where Ol' Bonsey came from...

Cross him and you'll see that both his swords are perfectly sharp, though.

Curiously, he never seems to wonder far from a specific area of the desert, so what could be there?

Still, as long as he's left alone, travel though the dunes is fairly safe.

Bonsey is a GW bone giant, which I always thought was bigger than this is. His hat (which I included because everyone deserves a nice hat) is (I believe) from the lizardmen temple guard? I was originally looking for some detritus for the ground, but when I saw how it sat on his head, the decision was made.

All hail Lor'Shana, King of the Undertow!

Though he was but a child when he was given the sword of rulership, Lor'Shana has proven himself a decent enough general and a capable combatant.

Of course, having a big ol' murderfish to ride around on likely helps with the latter.

Majestic, simply majestic.

The model is GW's Akhelian King. I might have enjoyed painting this bad boy more if it wasn't all assembled previously, but that's the risk you take with preowned minis (can you really call this a mini? It's pretty big). Still, temporarily removing the cape made things a smidge easier. Overall, a pretty fun paint job, even if it took what felt like forever.

I know, right? A fantastic figure, no question. I'm still surprised at how much I liked painting it.

And speaking of surprisingly enjoyable things...

Just a bunch of GW Namarti Thralls I picked up at moab.

I painted these ones up specifically to try and resell them this year. Will I succeed? Probably.

Then again, they do look pretty nice, even with my hamfisted waves on the bases.

Another lizardman done - Kroq-gar and Grimloq!

I can't say this model was high on my buy list when it first came out, but when you can get it for 17 bucks second hand? You get it.

Despite the usual failcast dramas, it's a lovely piece.

Between you and me, contrast paint did a lot of heavy lifting on this one.

Ah, second-hand finecast. I have no idea what the previous owner of this poor thing was planning, but rainbow blu-tac (or whatever it was I spent an inordinate amount of time scooping out of the tail join) is not a substitute for the connecting plug that must have been removed. The left leg ended up being too high, but that's nothing a bit of green stuff roughly shaped like a rock can't handle.

Overall? Pretty neat model and I'm glad I got a chance to paint it, even if some parts seemed to refuse to get painted.

Of course, not everyone's fantasical in a fantasy world. This is Todd.

As a town guard, Todd saw many of his friends go off and become adventurers.

The lucky ones returned in about a year's time.

While it's not glamorous, Todd takes pride in his job. Some say his sword is enchanted, but Todd's never seen any proof of that. He's just good at stabbing as far as he's concerned.

The model here is one of GW's Cities of Sigmar steelhelms. It was miniature of the month a little while back, so I picked him up. It scrubbed up pretty alright, I reckon.

Go Todd Go!
Todd looks like he enjoys his job. A few stabbin's and a few Brews, all within an easy walk of eachother.
So much better than 12 months an 50% chance to come home.

Todd likes those odds.

He looks good pete, came out well. :)

Cheers! I reckon he came out well too.

And now for something a little different.

It's...

Bookshelves!

Perhaps not as interesting or dynamic as a dragon, but still necessary, especially when fighting to reclaim a lost city.

Even the backs brush up pretty well on these things.

Yup, it's more wood. Not sure what else you want me to say about that.

And where would shelves be without books to put on them?

I think the symbol on the orange book was supposed to be a flame, but it kind of got away from me.

The pages were tough to paint, but it was worth it.

100% the words on those books on the left a praise for other books the author wrote.

It's just...so pretty to have them set up.

The set is wizkids' archivist library. There were a few issues, like one of the smaller shelves needing to be reset so it sat flush against the sides and the drawers needed to be shaved down a bit to fit properly...which I overdid, so I had to repair them with some green stuff. At three feet, they look fine.

I'd originally hoped to buy this set when I got my first library job, but the shop I saw it in sold out before I got the chance...and then just before Christmas last year, I found it in another shop! It was satisfying to finally paint it up and overall, I'd recommend it if you need something quick to fill a room (or you just want to paint books).

The potions, brews and white pages came out great! Nice find there.

Cheers mate! It was a great little project. We'll have to tee up a game soon to try 'em out.

Speaking of great little projects...

It's Tehenhauin, high priest of Sotek!

The last time this guy was on sale, I was between jobs. This time, back in June, I was filling in for story time at work, so I had money to spare.

I've always enjoyed his story as well. At the height of the skaven's invasion of Lustria, it was Tehenhauin who revealed the singular plaque that mentioned Sotek by name. Of course, since he was only mentioned once, the Slann disregarded it as being less important...until Tehenhauin led a huge contingent of skinks to slaughter the skaven until a volcano erupted and killed the rest of the rats as they tried to escape (although some say a few managed to get away). Since then, Sotek (the only one of the lizardmen gods to actually do anything since Chaos arrived) has been worshiped in every city.

Nothing like an underdog story to warm the heart (unless you're a skaven).

Eh walk it off, you'll be fine!

The model is GW's Tehenhauin. Overall, it was pretty fun to paint this one. There were a few fiddly bits (and I've just noticed a couple of bits on the rim I missed twice somehow) but keeping the plaque separate until the end saved me a heck of a lot of trouble. I had to play 'is this guts or snakes' a couple of times and a couple of snakes have random spikes that I didn't snip off earlier, but I like how it turned out.

Now, I only have one thing left to paint...and it's a big 'un!

Told ya he was big!

Roughly translated this Slann mage priest's name means, 'reaches for the stars.'

Unlike other Slann, this one takes a comparatively active role in the lives of mortals, tweaking the threads of fate to ensure that someone is right where they need to be to stop a chaos plot either deliberately, or just by moving their cabbage cart at just the right time.

Whenever this slann needs to appear in person, he is carried by his loyal temple guard, to conserve as much magical power as possible.

You'd best keep on your toes, unless his gaze rests upon you.

The model is a Slann mage priest from GW. When it came up for special order last year, I jumped at the chance to get one. There were challenges of course, but overall it turned out pretty well.

Compared to the first one I painted when I was about fourteen, I'd say I've improved just a little bit.
