Title: Painted Test! Normandy Buildings in 15mm
Post by: Sangennaru on January 16, 2015, 02:49:46 PM
Hi everyone! I think it's time to show on the forum what I've been showing on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/thelazyforger) one picture per time.

Recently I've started working on some 15mm scifi buildings as shown in this post: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=73175.0
Then, i tried to move back to WWII as well, and i did my first experiments. I've got three facades in progress. One is basically done, and only the painting awaits the first assembled prototype. The other two are now waiting for the molding, that will be hopefully done today.

The model is done from 3D printed parts with hand work on them (the weathering mainly), combining different parts to have more variety. In general, i will do three variants for each facade, and in my next order i will do the back facades as well as other shapes for the front ones.

The first cast looked like this:

and, after adding the shutters, the depht of the model was much more satisfying:

As a showcase, i built the rest of the building around it, using a resin roof i did a couple of years ago and some cardboard walls.

The modular windows can be used either for the ceramic facades for master sculpting and for the custom buildings. I'm happy of the result but i'm sure i'll do better next time. In general, that's a great way to make a cardboard look impressive. :)

AND NOW... the other two facades are there, awaiting for their turn in the same process:

Any comment is welcome, as i'm always eager for advice. :) :) :)

Cheers
Jack

Wow, those look super! Did you build the plaster sections as wooden forms first? What did you do to get the texture?
Title: Re: 15mm Normandy WIP
Post by: Sangennaru on January 16, 2015, 05:18:34 PM
No, the basic structures are made from a 3D print in a rough material. The final texture works pretty well, and it's several times faster than using a negative form. :)

The forms are very useful when you have to make simpler and less accurate shapes, or when you want to give a specific texture, as for my bunkers. :)

Simon.

For now, i've had some chatting with 15mm.co.uk, although we haven't discussed the economical part for a WWII buildings line. However, I'm still open to offers...
The only thing i'm sure is that i'm not going to cast them by myself... that is too much time consuming.

The models are now completed with doors as well. All the shutters will be cast separately, to allow more variety in the final piece. :)

Thank you =)

Do you know who are the largest 15mm WWII scenery companies around? As i said, i'd love to find a good sponsor for those, possibly a quite large one. Now i'm discussing some possibilities with 15mm.co.uk, but i'd love to probe other directions as well!

Thanks!

One more pic, just because:

Actually, the side view can show a bit more of the depht of the windows and the shutters effect.. I'm rather satisfied with the tridimensionality of the model, as opposed to the flat facades in laser-cut. :)

Really, REALLY lovely. Well done  :-*

In part because this...

Beats anything laser-cut, hands down.

...is so true, and your handiwork illustrates the point so wonderfully.
Depth, as you say, relief, texture... All the things missing from MDF...
Title: Re: GROUP PHOTO! Normandy Buildings in 15mm WIP
Post by: Sangennaru on January 18, 2015, 05:01:19 PM
That is true, BUT it would be great to make an hybrid model: resin is expensive, and there's no point in making lateral and back walls with that.

I did some experiments for 28mm expecially, where the front and back facades were in resin and all the rest (including interiors!) in lasercut MDF. That was quite cheaper than a full resin building, but with great looking exteriors! ^^

anyways, again does anyone knows a 15mm scenery company that might be interested in some WWII scenery? I'd love to be associated with some WWII company somewhere, but i don't really know where to look!

thanks
Jack

Yes, this seems like a very acceptable compromise, with great results.

Have you tried contacting someone at Battlefront Miniatures? I know they're a bit of a larger company and o might not be as interested in offerings from a small independent, but they may well be interested in this sort of thing. It's worth a try at least as there's certainly nothing to lose.

that's a very good point indeed!

Does anyone here knows them somehow? Contacting them through a contact might increase consistently the success chance!
LAFers, anyone? :D

I've done some experiments with the 28mm cobblestone i sculpted for Fenris Games 6 months ago. They work very well in 15mm as well, what's your opinion?

That's the setup:

and that's a... more artistic photo ;)

What do you think? :)

Besides, as above if anyone has contacts with battlefront Miniatures, i'd be grateful to know! ;)

Cheers

Honestly, and as much as I like them I think the cobbles are too big for 15s...

Which means you'll have to make some 15mm scale ones  :D

do you think so? Because (in scale) they are 30 x 50 cm, which is even smaller than the tipical slabs here in Milan.
Or are you saying that to make me sculpt another one? :D

By the way, you might have more luck asking if anyone has a contact with Battlefront Miniatures in the general or commercial forums (whichever is appropriate). A request in this thread is kind of buried and lots of people might not see it.

I could! However, a local store sells 191x191mm squares of light MDF, and i am SO MUCH tempted to do a modular table. In that case i could do some roads with the cobblestone, leaving the rest covered with grass?

Got a message back from a friend in Scotland who heads a big FoW playgroup:

Quote
I don't know how much luck he'll have given that BF have a significant range of stuff they produce in-house (through GF9) and sell pre-painted.

If he's looking for promotional stuff and product reviews, I'd very strongly recommend he contacts WWPD (steven@WWPD.net I think) if he hasn't already.

Oh, thank you sir! Very interesting to know!
aActually, since in any case i'll not sell the scenery myself, i'm not willing to invest in promotional gifts around, but i didn't know WWPD before and it's good to have a new contact anyways! ^^

It might, if it's true 20mm. However, the floors are 35mm and 30mm tall, which is not that much. I'll take some pictures tonight, although the three facades in the photos are now shipped to Scotland and i'll have to use other casts. ^^

I'm not sure i understood: The model is meant for 15mm models, and the pics show them in scale for comparison. I have some SHQ scottish soldiers, i'll use them for a comparison. I've been using warhammer round bases that are a few mm thick, so they will look definitely taller... I'll see what i can do. :D

The point is, most of the buildings for wargaming are WAYS smaller than how they should be. Most of the 900 buildings are HUGE next to a human, especially the "government" ones.
So, if those buildings were in right scale they could easily work for 20mm as well. But i think that my buildings are meant to look nice for 15mm, and a 20mm man could look a bit... huge. :(

Here are a couple of pics with 20mm SHQ miniatures for comparison. I've used a 2.5 mm balsa base below the building to compensate the GW base i chose for the scottish brits.

20mm figures, 15mm building. :)
The door is clearly a bit short for them, but beside of that they scale relatively well.

I'm afraid they won't. Ian is now pretty full of work and projects with his upcoming kickstarters, and i really hope he'll do well. But he can't invest time and money in this project, i'm afraid. :(

I want one!

As soon as i will find the right company to produce them! ^_^

Meanwhile, i started another version of the small facade. The idea is that having two variants will allow to use more facades together. Two IDENTICAL adjacent facades won't look nice, but if they are alternated it will be much better. :)

Ideally, for each facade i will make two variants and a second-floor-destroyed variant at least, maybe two. That's a lot of different pieces!
Title: Re: Comparison! Normandy Buildings in 15mm
Post by: Sangennaru on January 24, 2015, 12:03:14 AM
did some casting, and tried to put hem together. The two tall buildings will have a front lawn with a small gate , in order to keep more uniformity in the street line.

I've to say, they are pretty huge pieces of scenery, i'm quite impressed. :)

Meanwhile, for something (almost) completely different, i've cast a few plaster pieces, and i created a ruined facade. I'm actually quite happy. Of course, with the shutters attached (some broken, some missing) it will look even more damaged.

Thank you everybody! ^_^
Any suggestions for the painting style? In "real life" it is a bit too dark, maybe...

I want to buy this. Will you sell them?

I am currently looking for a company to distribute them. I received a few offers, but for this project i'd like to find one of the "famous ones" to take it. I've got time, and meanwhile i'll continue working on them.

Cheers everyone! I'll be in Morocco from Monday, when i'll be back i'll paint the facade block i've now primed. :)
Meanwhile, any comment or suggestion is welcome, as always.

Jack

While judging, please remember that this is 15mm stuff. :)

Ok, so if this all was 28mm I would be nodding with my approval but now I'm applauding you :D

Hope you find a good distributor for these.

No, they look the right colour and "brightness" to me.

Today i wanted to start painting the larger city block, but the bad weather stopped me from using the airbrush.

No, they look the right colour and "brightness" to me.

In real life it's quite darker, the "soft room" i used brightened it. :(

Next ones i think i'll paint the roof blue, what do you think? And maybe add some more color to the walls too.
