Hi All,
As I've mentioned earlier, my gaming group is looking into moving into Back of Beyond, and I wanted to set my Warlord army in the Tibetan-Qinghai border region. Not finding any suitable ready made buildings, I took a stab at trying to build something myself. Here is the first test building, a Tibetan home:

And here is an example of the real thing:

Feedback and suggestions for any improvements before I build more would be much appreciated. A few additional photos are on the blog:

Thanks!

Love it. Only suggestion would be basing them, as they look like they've grown out of the ground.

Very nice. Skirmish nirvana in that photograph

Yes!
-
Very effective, Joekano, like the house.
-
Very nice o_o
..and the towel you put under it gives a very good terrain effect too (although usually I'm not a fan of terrain made from towels).
-
Looks very good indeed. Well done. Agree with the earlier comment about a base though. Excellent.
-
Thanks Everyone! I agree that a base would be good. I was thinking of sculpting a little hill out of foam for the village when everything is ready, so hopefully that would improve the final look.
-
Looks great, can't wait until you tackle some scenery as so much of the effect of those houses is the ranked effect up the hillsides!
Modular houses to slot into hillsides with standard-size rectangular slots cut into them, maybe?

I hadn't thought of making it modular, but that's a great idea. Thanks!

I have a book with detailed elevations and plans for a variety of Nepalese/Tibetan houses (among the strange references I collect). If you want I can scan and send them to you or just post images here.

Wow! I didn't even know such a reference existed. If you don't mind posting some images here, that would be fantastic. Thanks so much!!!

Seconding that!

A really great work :-*

It took me a little while to find the book, but here's a link to the album.

There's about twelve scans there of 3 different house types.

That is really useful! Thanks so much for sharing!

Hey, that's great! Thanks!

Here's the second house:

While I'm not completely happy with this one (I think the upper roof looks a bit off), I think it will look ok once I get it mixed in with more buildings.

Really nice!

Looks great the fringe work is pretty damn cool :-* :-*

Looking good. I can see what you mean about the roof - if it really does look top heavy in the group later on, I guess you could easily (as it's not attached) build a new one.
-
Wow! Amazing work. :o

Looking at the pics again, maybe have the top dollar windows closer to the roof? Most of the real houses look that way. But that aside, stunning work. Well done sir!
-
It's a remarkable piece and looks the business. All it might need is some of the wooden clutter that seems to feature in photos of these sorts of buildings...
-
Thanks for the feedback and ideas everyone! I'm still experimenting as I work on this project, so it's helpful to hear everyone's thoughts.
-
You might try replacing the stone wall on the roof with firewood. Just leave the stone corners in place and cords of firewood in between.
-
Beautiful job. :-*
-
I think its great the way it is.

Finally something new to add to the village project:

It's not huge, but will fit in the modular hillside I'm planning. Construction photos can be found on the blog:

Thanks!

I've stayed in a very similar temple in Sherpaland. The windows were a lot smaller though! :)
Before I forget, here's the ultimate collection of online photographs and documents from Tibet http://tibet.prm.ox.ac.uk/index.php
and a link to a site full of links to photos from the Younghusband expedition http://blog.mountainworldproductions.com/2010/10/photos-from-younghusbands-1903-expedition-to-tibet.html

Joe are you a frustrated architect, your buildings are amazing, keep up the good work.
-
So I was originally dreaming bigger for the hillside, but quickly realized storage was going to be a problem (and I don't want the wife to kill me). As such, it only holds 3 buildings, but i think it looks nice:
I'll probably knock out a few more buildings in the future, but they will have to sit on low bases on the table.

Very, very nice.
-
Does the job nicely :)
Put a few pots and bits of scatter terrain and you're ready to go 8)
cheers

Hi Guys,
I've release the architectural elements on the blog that I think can be shared under fair use rules:
