Title: Looking for a modern train engine in 28mm
Post by: DrVesuvius on January 20, 2015, 03:58:11 PM
Good day all

So I've got my Poundstretcher trainset (two of), my Teamsterz locos & carriages, Tomy "troublesome trucks" and at least one other 28mm compatible train set.  Put simply, I am steam-trained up the wazoo.

But, perhaps inevitably, my current project is a modern-day setting  :?

Can anyone recommend a good source for a 28mm compatible modern-looking engine that's available in the UK or Europe and is in the toy-train price range (not the precision scratch-built O gauge collectors' item price range)?  I'm not incredibly fussy about regional appearance or precise scale-detail accuracy, just something that'll generally look the part.

Thanks in advance

Dr V

If O scale will work try searching ebay for "dummy locomotive" or "locomotive shell". The dummy is a normal model without a power unit and the shell has neither power or the wheels. They can still be pricey but I managed to pick a couple up at different times in the $10-15 range.

O Scale is going to be a bit on the large side but its probably the only viable option for modern equipment.

Some of the Chuggington engines might be to scale and a good start for a conversion...

Also look at paper models. Modern locomotives are fairly simple in their basic shape and easily made for the tabletop.

I think the company that makes the poundstretcher train does a Diesel type model as well?  is there something on the back of the box?

There is this retro diesel/express.

Which a number of us have found in this neck of the forum.

Cheers
Matt.

I've seen 28mm'ish toy diesel trains, but only at truck stops (it was the "CAT") label IIRC.
it might have been one of these two, but I can't tell you exactly

This one has reviews at the bottom that says it fits on o gauge track.

There look to be alot of CAT trains at various price points and sizes.

Right now at Toys R Us There's a bullet train that looks spot on for 28mm.

Though it might not help you for a freight engine.

How does that one look alongside 28mm figs?

I'm not sure, height looks about right, as does width but the Windows/doors may be 'tight'. That pic was taken by a fellow user Zemjw, in the 2013 Christmas trains thread. He posted this pic of the steam train and figure. The train is toy o-gaugeish.

Probably about the same as that bullet train.

So definitely not the 1/87 scale listed on the box then….

Looks great!

Yea, the 1/87 is definitely to small.

Does anybody have the diesel train and can show a picture next to 28mm miniatures? I´d like to buy it but don´t know where...

The set has been found on eBay, but a note of caution, one LAFer (I cannot remember who) discovered there are two sizes of the steam train, one O one a bit smaller, if I remember the key was the number of driving wheels. The larger one had an extra set I think.

I can buy the train set in a local independant discount store.

My try at a combined toy train thread with lots of pictures is here: including box art for that retro diesel

I'd suggest looking for the train cars behind it Michi , there is also a steamer set that pulls those passenger cars. I recall a few photos around the forum with them.

I would say head height is ok, just the doors are tiny, as are the Windows?

Cheers
Matt.

I am not perfectly sure that the passenger cars of some steam train sets are those ot the diesel train. I am really after that diesel train, because it looks like a perfect scale replica of the prototypical VT11.5 (later/after 1968 numbered 601) series of the German railways, the iconical TEE train. If that only would be bigger than H0, I´d buy it!

A bit too small for use with 28mm.

Wow, theres one! She is a 'little short' mmm.

Michi, as you may recall the Shed Wars blog did a write up, and mentions the two various sized trains.
http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/28mm-train-for-wargames-part-2.html

I cannot find the exact one on ebay at the moment but did spot this:
(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/Mjg5WDU3MQ==/z/g18AAOxyNExSNfp5/$(KGrHqV,!lMFIyF2fW1yBSNfp5DloQ~~60_12.JPG)

and this
(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTYyWDkzMw==/z/VXwAAOSwDk5UBLwO/$_57.JPG)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CLASSIC-TRAIN-SET-3-5m-TRACK-WORKING-HEADLIGHT-BATTERY-OPERATED-CHILD-TOY-NEW-/151567228143?pt=UK_Toys_VintageToys_RL&hash=item234a1c5cef

Which seems to the based on the same set I bought (19mm OO gauge) and will be small without heavy conversion work.

Cheers
Matt

You´re right - regretfully it´s too small. I really had liked to have that train!

I remember that. The bigger engine seems right to me, but the other is too small.
The ebay finds are not, what I´m looking for, although the passenger train has the motive end car of the diesel train, the coaches are of different origin. The (fantasy) EMD F7 diesel engine of the goods train is also not very much to my taste, but thanks for the hints anyway!

I realize it's technically too small, but for a train that isn't actually going to have figures on it, I'm actually ok with scale compression.  I'd probably use that train if I didn't already have a properly scaled bullet train.

Looks like the "classic train set" with the diesel and one boxcar set above is available in the USA as well...

Except that this one comes with a passenger car.
