Title: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (More additions to the space opera cast! 7/4/20)
Post by: Jagannath on January 22, 2015, 04:03:05 PM
So having asked about 28mm space opera, I've also been continuing with the pile of 15mm Sci-Fi I have. I've only been back in the hobby a few months after a long break and I'm not well versed in photographing minis so I'll work on improving these - they're a little washed out.

I'm mostly painting 15mm Sci Fi for small games of Five Parsecs from Home, it's a great system for the skirmishes I enjoy. I tend to pick at them whilst working on other bits and bobs, especially whilst I'm converting stuff for one of my main projects at the mo:

These guys work really well as security/police/paramilitary.

A wee bounty hunter - really pleased with his armour.

This next guy is still a little WIP, but they're a black powder level alien race I'm working on about 30 of to fight against my GZA FSA. Basically French Foreign Legion battles... in spaaaaaaace. They're Blue Moon Plains Indians with some GS work. Pretty crap casts so this is about as well as I can paint them.

I've actually pretty much finished 10 of them now, but I want to improve my photos before hand. What's the best bet for iphone 6 images?

Like them all, but that is a pretty cool conversion of the woodland Indian.

Thanks -as a group they're quite distinctive, and it's not too challenging as a conversion to carry out on all of the troops. Hopefully I can show some more off tonight.

Critical Mass Games, same as the ones in the first image.  That particular one is here:

They look just as good in person.

It's been a wee while since I finished any 15mm stuff, medieval plastics have distracted me recently but here's a few new bits.

The first group of FSA from GZG. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of foreign legion in space, they'll be facing off against the Karkath that I'm working on (see first post). They're awaiting flocking whilst I decide exactly what to do.

Then we have some 20mm Emperor's Shock Troops from MJ figures. In terms of sixe the FSA come up to their shoulder, so I'm imagining them as some tall, humanoid race that a baron/ambassador/uppity crime lord might have as a regal guard. I'll be painting this bloke (who's pretty massive for 15mm himself) to go with them:

must be said, that jade colour (vallejo Emerald) is one of the least consistent paints I've ever used. Dries much darker and doesn't always give a consistent colour. Ho hum.

Fantastic work on all of these :)

They make some paint-jobs I've seen on much larger miniatures look very sub-par.

Some very nice work on these, really like the use of colours.

And having looked at the blog - you have the same problem as me, not finishing stuff!!

Thanks all - that's very kind.

@Inso - I'm pleased with my 15mm pinging but I wish I could just be that touch neater, I can never quite hit the level of crispness I'd like. New glasses needed! Love everything you're doing by the way, can't wait to see your Jedi beastmen finished.

@Fred - yup. I have three problems - one is flitting inspiration. The second is that I just can't spend time painting once I lose inspiration, I just have to park it, and thirdly I'm a lazy painter so sometimes I launch into colourschemes (like the yellow around blokes above) and find it a real grind to finish. Basically - I'm lazy!

I know what you mean about yellow - decided to do my Epic Space Marines as Imperial Fists, so lots of yellow, its the hardest colour to paint and get any consistency of colour.

Post by: Jagannath on June 29, 2016, 10:50:38 PM
@Fred - yes, I've got the swing of white (anothe tricky one) and have a relatively good recipe but I just can't get yellow. I struggle to control very thin paint (the famous 'milky' consistency) which I think you need for yellow. I saw some beautiful Infinity miniatures once with great yellow armour and the pinger told me there was 8 very thin layers. 8!!!! Forget it.

@Ockman - thanks. I must try and post more frequently, and less WIP's!  >:(

Painted these blokes a fair while ago, but only just finished their bases and base edges, so thought I'd pop them up here:

I had a phase of experimenting with Army Painter dip, so these were basecoated (leaving some blacklining) then highlight then dipped. Same as the mercs I posted in earlier in the thread. Idea works OK, but you definitely need to go bright for good results, brighter than I've gone here.

I may try it again with some suitable infantry sometime - one of GZG's upcoming infantry (Islamic Federation resculpts) should be perfect.

Sweet!  The yellow/brown guys are the best, I may try something in that combo if it'll turn out looking that good.

Cheers - If I was doing them again I'd use a heavy pigment paint to rebase the yellow first (maybe some sort of pale beige from GW base range). The yellow's on them took 5 thin coats and aren't that smooth as a result - because I like to leave blacklining I find too thin paints quite challenging, so some colours are tricky. I rarely use yellow, or certain reds or purples (purples seem to be often thin).

It is a good colour scheme though - I think the 'blue' tone grey on the weapons helps too, it's contrasty so they emphasize each other as a result.

Would love to see more of your USNC Hardsuit Marines by GZG.

Love the colors you used on them.

Any chance you'd be willing to share which paint and techniques you used for painting them?

Thanks matey - sorry, you did send me a PM, totally forgot to reply.

Luckily, I'm weird and have all my paint schemes noted down.

They are - black primer then

body: GW Khorne Red, helmet: Vallejo Black Red
Guns: Vallejo Luftwaffe Uniform

Then GW Agrax earthshade everything at full strength - I prefer the new gloss version of the wash, it flows better for my money.

Then reline and panel the armour khorne red and panel the whole helmet khorne red.
Then highlight with GW wazdakka red
then give sharp highlight of squig orange.

To be honest, I didn't enjoy painting these - I paint in a very particular way, so struggle with lots of fine detail (like ribbing). Glad you like them though. I also didn't use Dullcote on these - I gloss varnished them, then used a matte varnish I have that's pretty crap, for that satin finish.

That's my recipe for 'dark' red. If I want brighter red (like on that blokes  cloak above) I go up to a sharper highlight (usually up to a pale yellow) then tone back down with Vallejo transparent red.

Hiya all,

Few rounds of LPL have closed so I can pop some recent stuff in here:

Very pleased with this batch - I went to really sharp highlights on the very outer sharp edges and I'm please I did, might not photograph that well but they look great in the hand. Tried a new basing method on these - 15mm round cornered squares. They look OK, they game really well - really work with against scatter terrain.

Next, my pulp sci-fi group I previewed ages ago:

I'm happy with these - Pulp Sci-Fi (like the stuff Hydra minis do) is something I'd LOVE to see in 15mm so this group was a bit of an attempt at that. I'm a big fan of the scale but I think it's sometimes difficult to get the kind of character that pulp need. Having said that, the old Traveller 15's were super characterful and the Ion Age range is definitely trying (some weird stuff going on with weapon scale on some though). I'd love to commission a range really.

Anyway, it's nice to have something to add!

This most recent group are intended for Pulp Alley and Void Pirates games - I'm going to start a solo campaign, likely with pulp alley, once I've finished a few more bits (including some Space Dorfs eventually I hope!)

Pulp Alley have released a ruleset and a solo 'deck' for the cards you draw sometimes... better than simply making it up in a vacuum. Haven't tried the solo rules out yet other than glancing over them to get the gist. I'll post something up when I get the opportunity.

Same game we played Bergil using the star wars minis, when you had to get to the droids but the pair of you ended up ignoring them and having a big bust up on the pyramid ;-) The rules are free btw* on the Pulp Alley site.  (*bar the league creation bits, but you can get the main rules and the deck - the pdf and printed versions, a proper card deck and all the models are available at Statuesque Minis.

Gosh - thank you.

Photos are weird - I have the backing paper set up but my light is a massive light and good I was given by a photographer friend. Folds down well but probably bit the thing I would run out and buy if it hadn't been free.

The hood cover (that softens the light) is maybe 20cm (a touch less maybe) from the minis for these pics, with my phone lens just poking up to capture them. I shoot on an iPhone, using the Manual Camera app with HDR turned on. Issue with this method is that depth of field can be pretty shallow - it's very apparent on the Rogue Trader group. Still, it's better than nothing and it was free!

edit: "good cover" became "hood cover"

Hiya - fresh from the LPL, here's my greys:

They're not really 15mm, but thought it was better to stick them in here than to dredge up my 28mm sci-fi thread.

These are from CP Models (http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/28mm%20Grey%20Aliens.htm) and were lovely minis to paint - the first minis I've painted in a loooooong time without using any washes - just a greyishblueygreen triad that I really like and some blending.

As I said in my entry it was nice to get some use out of my red tufts too - they looked good on here, I've not really had an opportunity to use them yet.

They're on ebay -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300-Mini-Tufts-by-Serious-Play-Scenery-Model-Warhammer-Static-Grass-Small-Tiny/122015899456?_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555014%26algo%3DPL.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D43781%26meid%3Dde3c930f91fa44daa9fe54fc736ccd33%26pid%3D100506%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26

Be warned - they're not great, they're not all 'vertical' (i.e. they've settled at squiff angles) and aren't adhesive at all - you'll notice on mine I've surrounded them with other tufts, partly to help hold them upright. Still, nice pop of colour.

Thanks, I'll take a look.  AQotMF was a flash in the pan, but I suspect I'll need to base Martian/Barsoomian stuff again someday, and red tufts would be helpful for that.

The human figs (lobotomized or not) are way bigger than any 15mm I've seen, even modern stuff.  18mm is a fair descriptor.  The tanks and drones and tripods are suitable for 15mm scale, though.  They'd be quite big but workable, and some of it could even work in 28mm depending on how large you think a tripod should be.  Detail level is fairly low across the board, but not horrible.  Think the main reason for the game not catching on (at least locally) was some production/distribution SNAFUs and iffy game balance between the forces, not any tremendous failings of the models themselves.  Some were kind of pricey, but not the core stuff, and high prices never seem to stop (for ex) Privateer, Wyrd, or GW.

^thanks HS - sounds like a swerve tbh, not that desperate for any of them (other than the massive land ship, I'd love that - I want to model it broken down and sort of becoming a shanty town).

I posted on my blog recently that I bought an extra fine razorsaw, having not had one for a while and necer having such a fine one and it's opened up so many possibilities! I should be painting for LPL, but I'm mostly sawing and pinning

This is a crap picture but this space adbenturer is basically done - body from Brigade, head from the Slap Minis Space Knights, strange 90s hair by me! He's also got a helmet clipped on to his belt at the back - I want to play some strung together, very small skirmish-adventure's (much closer to RPG's) so he's going to crashed land on a planet (in no way an idea nicked off Image comics' Drifter or Prophet), get attacked by beasts, find a companion or two, meet bandits, find a settlement, escape some slavers etc... that type of gaming is really appealing to me at the mo.

Anyhoo, as you were, just a small thing...

Hi all,

Another post-LPL piccie here - fresh from a very fair thrashing by Captain Blood.

These are GZG ORC, great hardsuits - think they could work in pretty 'hard' sci-fi settings or more space opera stuff like mine. Firs of my pics in some scenery too - haven't got much of a backdrop so had to go in for a fairly tight angle on these!

Thanks both!

Here's my latest batch, fresh from LPL (no shame in a defeat by Bugsda!)

I converted the chap in blue on a whim and realised he looked like Tin Tin, so built the rest of the group on a whim to go with him. I'm pleased with them on the whole - not sure the Professor Calculus quite works, and in retrospect the white ties him too much to SN0-WY (looks like a controller), but as Minis to add to my ever burgeoning character and NPC pool they're all great.

T'in T'in (space reporter!) and SN0-WY will feature in some Pulp Alley adventures soon.

Great work usual Jag,
I see that I have more minis to get from GZg & seeing them painted up makes a big difference.
I usually only start to notice the detail when i start painting.

My personal favourites are those yellow armoured ones.

Kudos to the sculptor also.
Keep it up

Morning all,

Here's my latest entry - definitely not my finest LPL performance, and definitely not the best photo ever, but rightly thrashed - the ww2 scene was excellent.

These are a conversion - Xar bodies on Crusties legs, which I'm very pleased with - I really like the Xar bodies and weapons but don't love the body joint, so nice to find an alternative.

If anyone's read the Prophet comics, these guys are inspired by the bounty hunter tracking him in the first issue - an alien hunting party.

A mixed bag of bounty hunters - they work as a crew, or as individuals to tie into other groups. Pretty pleased with them on the whole - my 15mm sci fi world is really starting to have more characters to populate it. Wish I'd done better in LPL though!

impressive painting, whenever I paint 15s I always just end up batch painting them to get them done  lol
How many layers do you generally go for?
Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (Bounty Hunters 3/6/17)
Post by: Jagannath on June 03, 2017, 08:59:10 PM
Thanks both - I do indeed undercoat 15s in black, I leave it between colours to achieve that blacklining effect. Most colours are: base, wash, base again, highlight, extreme sharp highlight.

@number1section1 - I batch paint too, even for groups like this. So these are 5 of about 15 minis I've got in the queue that are irregular adventurers. I painted the orange, dusty blue, green and that pale grey on all 15 - each of them has at least one of those colours. After that I finish them off one by one. Works for me!

I get why people aren't always keen on 15s - it's a different thing and the character is different (arguably isn't there in some ranges).

Having said that - you could dabble for £30, easy. I'd start with a couple of packs from GZG, some bases from warbases (I use 18mm, 2mm thick and a 3mm magnet hole). I've found the trick is to go a bit garish with colours, and really contrasty with highlights.

I actually like the slightly reduced character - models can be a bit more 'representative' which works well for RPGish things I do.
Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (Space Dorkz 10/6/17)
Post by: Jagannath on June 10, 2017, 01:46:21 PM
Well, LPL draws to a close - I've really enjoyed it! Struggled in parts to get things done, but it's been great to plow through a big chunk of minis (can't quite believe I've finished over 60 minis!).

My last entry *was* going to be another part of my 28mm cyberpunk project, but a)they were going to slow b) I wasn't enjoying it that much, so I parked those and started a little group of Slap minis' excellent Space Dorkz from the Kickstarter (I'm reliably told they'll be up for sale soon).

Honestly, these are some of the best sculpts I've painted - particularly without being massive 18mm+ minis. They're as good as Copplestone barbarians. Loved 'em. Going to paint a much bigger group in a different scale soon - just want to buy a few more first! I hope everyone interested in 15s goes and buys a load when they come up so Slap carry on with 15mm!

(Also, I've been calling these Space Dorfs for ages, not Space Dorkz, which is really weird I realise!)

Wow! I'd just like to say, I've enjoyed all of your entries during the LPL! I'm a true 28mm is Gods scale kinda gamer, but your making it REALLY difficult to stick to that! Good choice of figures too.

Looking through this whole thread, you can really see the great progress of your painting, you've really improved. It was good before, but you've definitely raised your game! If you didn't say they were 15mm, I would believe they're 28's.

Zrunelord: i can try to add some GZG as well, but I don't think, I have unpainted ones. They are pretty good next to Slap and as you said Vanguard are slightly bigger.

Ach, and I also have Khurasan painted. These are nice, but also pretty big and less comical. I use the Super Mutant King as a Mad Dokk Grotsnik.

Post by: Jagannath on June 26, 2017, 06:49:58 PM
Very quick post - didn't have time to get the light box out, rushed off my feet recently! Since the LPL painting has slowed a touch - I've taken the lull as an opportunity to prep a few things, build some scenery (awaiting paint) and generally mess about with a few things. I was also lucky enough to receive a few minis from mr Harold over at ClearHorizon minis, so a select group of them are now cleaned, primed and based ready for paint.

I did have time to finish this chap though - a converted space adventurer I showed off on the blog a wee while ago . These pics will have to do for now:

He's a headswap from a mini from Brigade - a general type bloke with a bald Slap minis head, then a 90s boyband haircut sculpted. I also added a helmet clipped to his belt from critical mass games (now Ral Partha) - I quite fancy converted another one of him with his helmet on too for full Space Lord effect. I think the angle of the back picture might make the clipped helmet look more awkward than it is - I think it's quite convincing in the flesh.

I'm actually super chuffed with him. One of the (sometimes fair) critisicm of 15mm can be a little lack of character - I feel like I've managed to get this guy choc-a-bloc with it though.

What are you basing your figures on?

Also, the buildings in your pictures, where are they from?

Thanks.

I use 2mm mdf with 3mm magnet holes - most 'normal' size minis go on an 18mm base - it's barely different but I think it's a better size, visually, than 20mm.

The buildings are "28mm" sci fi buildings from Scotia Grendel - they're tiny though! I reckon they're about 1:87/1:80 so a touch big but if you look at some of my older pictures where minis are standing near the doors and control panels I think it looks about right. Well worth getting hold of.

Hullo,

Not had much to show off recently - sorting out a house move then getting a whole pile of stuff into an 'almost finished' state hasn't left me with much to photograph. Ho hum - things should start coming off the desk in quick succession soon.

Here's a Forged in Battle ancient priest (I bought a pack for my desert fantasy project (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=102905.0)) that I painted up as a wandering alien mendicant the other day - who knows; he might be a pacifist, peaceful, or lame or he might be a psychic or have a laser sword stashed under his robes!

I'm struggling with my photo set up a bit at the moment, so this needed pushing more in post production than I'd have liked, looks a bit weird and plasticky.

I'll mostly be focusing on  fantasy for a wee while, but I do have an alien slave trader (plus slaves and guards) slowly progressing through the queue at the moment.

You're not wrong there! I'm on a bit of an 'NPC' kick at the mo - I loved Fallput 2 as a kid, and always admired how well it set all its scenes with a limited number of 'models', so I'm taking some inspiration from there and trying to prep and paint some 'generics' who can play multiple roles. With that in mind I'm trying not to 'overthink' them before I start painting, not characterise them too much.

This, I try to do as well! Although I write small stories about each model, I try to keep an open mind to what they also can be. As with my pirate crew, I write stories as if they were a crew I would game with, but I am almost certain that they will mainly fill the role as generic space scum/antagonists. Still, I think it is fun to write stories, but they won't dictate the models use.

Awesome model by the way! I have one city board and one badlands/forest/wasteland board (brown), but whenever I see your desert terrain (and Dr. D'eath's Sandport) I want to build a desert board (and perhaps an arctic one ;))

Thanks very much.

Desert is my favourite for Sci-Fi, though I'd love an arctic board too, more for hard Sci-Fi/Spy-Fi though, not so much my Sci-Fi/RPG stuff. I should crack on really - might be nice to do some alternative basing. Snow basing works really well for 6mm too - the minis really 'pop' against the white.

Another day, another finished mini.

This is the second go at this chap - wasn't happy with the sculpting on the first one (having put a few layers of paint on) so had another go:

I'm really pleased with him - he's absolutely massive, hence carrying around a weapon usually reserved for mounting on vehicles. He's probably a bit much for some of the small RPG-skirmish games I play, but he's cool!

He's a conversion of the excellent 28mm sci fi birdmen from CP models - I'm quite inspired to do a whole force of them now.

Just to give you a picture of his heft, here he is next to a WIP Forged in Battle priest, who's pretty tall herself.

Really massive, yup. Is it mounted on a 25mm base?
For the sake of the characters, let's hope that he doesn't appear often on the table.

Yeah 25mm, almost all my others are on 18mm bases for reference. I suspect I'll need to be careful which adventures I involve him in.

I love 15mm sci fi! :-*. It's funny, I look at your minis and I almost forget they are so small.  I showed some of my 15mm figures to my brother in law.  He said:  " Hold on, let me get my reading glasses so I can see these things properly."

Excellent work!  How about some Star Wars 15mm?
Do you take commissions?

Thanks! I've got so used to only painting 15s that I get the opposite when I paint 28s, they're massive!

I would take on commissions, but I'm so slow that it wouldn't be worthwhile (or leave any time for painting my own stuff!). I want to paint some garrison troopers next, those'll be vaguely Star Wars inspired I reckon.

Really nice minis, I like the huge brute wielding vehicle-mounted weapons, ace idea! The priest looks kind of Jedi-y, which is awesome!

Love your work!

15mm Star Wars is what we all need. But FFG rather goes 35+mm with their wargames :(
There are excellent proxies though and the older Micromachine models are 15-20mm in size.

@topic: The priest indeed has a great Jedi feeling on him. I love him!

Thanks both - Ockman, I hope it's all going well for you!

DivisMal - I've been trying to 'formalise' the Sci-Fi world my minis are set in, and it's sort of a non-cannon Star Wars, without so much of the force or the dark side. So there may be more not-Jedi in my future.

Sorry not much updates recently - I seem to be in a phase of lots of prepping, priming and base coating, plus I've got some 28mm (shock horror!) post apocalypse distracting me. I'm sure I'll catch up soon.

That's a pretty interesting idea. My 15s waver between not-Dune, not-40k and many other influences. There are just too many cool models available and lately I've even been bitten by the 15mm VSF bug...;)

I'm using the basics from Five Parsecs from Home, adding my own ideas and inspiration.

The main idea with my setting is that humanity has gone through three phases of expansion:

1. The first expansion used generational spacetravel at first and later CTL (close to light speed). Expansion was slow.

2. Humanity encountered alien species during their expansions. One of these offered a method of travel which was next to instanteneous, although the engines were locked and the aliens controlled every single travel (and debited the human government). Expansion went fast and humanity spread across the stars. Some of the more important worlds installed ansibles to be able to communicate instantly (although they were extremely expensive).
Humanity relied on the instanteneous travel, but the alien species controlling it disappeared suddenly, separating the human worlds from each other for millennia.

3. Worlds close to each other banded together, humanity went back to CTL and generational ships as the means of interstellar travel, until the Svensen Drive was discovered and humanity could yet again be united. My games will be set about a quarter millennia after the start of the third expansion.

Thanks all -

@Dr.De'ath - yeah, he's a good example of 'converting' a mini just with the paintjob (much easier in small scales!).

@Ockman - Sounds great, plenty of scope for all kinds of adventures. For me, any cool Sci-Fi setting needs to have some sort of disappeared civilisation or rediscovery element, I absolutely love that stuff!

@DivisMal - I know the feeling Florian, I've got 2 whole other, separate sci-fi settings too: an over the top, masters of the universe/science fantasy one (mostly for playing Rogue Planet) and a sort of Dieselpunk non-historical WW2/post Apocalypse (I guess that's more weird war than it is sci-fi though). There's always room for MOAR!!

Oh this sounds interesting. A little bit of Dune Vol. 5 and Gateway, if I guess correctly!?

One of the biggest joys of 15mm for me is the freedom from oppressive "boutique" settings of the post-Rogue Trader era, and I'm not only referring to GW (- in fact the way GW evolves, e.g.: Armageddon: Shadow War 100% compatible with my old Necromunda is pretty okay. but sometimes I just need a break from poorly written fiction and teenage fantasies of almighty soldiers:) )

Yes, that's true. Always. Masters of the Universe is a great fave of mine, and I'm looking to put some stuff in 15-20mm together. It's hard to find suitable minis, but many of the 80s "small 25mm" Fantasy minis work well.

15mm VSF is vastly underrated. The scale is great for what you want to do in the setting. Flying ships, savage hordes and heroic gentlemen all are possible. But it seems apart from a guy in down under and me in Germany there's not a single person playing it...well nearly lol

I've only read the first two or three Dune books and do not know of Gateway, so my inspiration is from somewhere else (although I'm not sure I can pinpoint it)

I wanted a way to explain divergent development across the galaxy, while still spreading humanity across most of known space. Also, since my first RPG experience was with the Swedish game Mutant 2089 (which evolved into Mutant: RYMD (=SPACE), which evolved into Mutant Chronicles) I wanted worlds devastated by nuclear war, enormous high-tech cities with cyberpunk vibes and lots and lots of evil corporations with corporate armies . I think that wouldn't be possible with a present galactic government.

Yeah, those Copplestone guys are excellent for He-Man lookalikes. They do have too many shields though, which are difficult to remove and replace.

No problem. I have some more VSF which I'm gonna post, but at the moment all is safely stored.

Afternoon all.

Had a little bit of time to finish off a few minis today - not too exciting, but still.

First up, a space shepherd (Forged in Battle mini with sculpted on pants and helmet) and his space goats:

These are just to add to my general 'cast' of minis, no specific use in mind.

Next, a mini from the excellent new Crom's Anvil range (www.cromsanvil.co.uk (http://www.cromsanvil.co.uk))

I bought a couple of these when they came out and the sci-fi one has left the painting desk first - added a visor, a backpack and some little details just to tech him up a bit. He can be a wanderer, or another shepherd type character or a priest.

Anyway, as I say - nothing too exciting, but it's nice to get some new bits finished.

Like your conversions as they make the minis unique.

One question though, where did you get the goats 😎😎😎?

Keep it up.

Such lovely minis. I have a nice stash of 15mm sci-fi but I'm currently rattling my brains out trying to settle on a period, scale and ruleset. Do you use Pulp Alley with these?
Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (Space Shepherds 27/9/17)
Post by: Jagannath on October 17, 2017, 04:49:04 PM
Thanks very much. I do use a bodged Pulp Alley for small solo adventure games (basically I don't worry about the league creation rules and just make up characters - balance isn't something I'm hugely concerned about) but I also use FiveCore/5 Parsecs for sort of similar/balanced human centric firefights (as opposed to RPG-lite stuff).

If you're trying to settle on a period what about into Rogue Trader style gaming? One of the nice things about that is that you can take the approach of early Rogue Trader - sci-fi minis but any terrain really (I love the old white dwarf issues where Imperial Guard fight around what look a lot like 18th century farm buildings). Basically a few sci-fi minis and some flavourful scatter terrain (a weekends work with £30 tops of models) could be a side project to some other era. You would have to settle on a scale though!
Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (Space Shepherds 27/9/17)
Post by: sonicReducer on October 17, 2017, 05:46:57 PM
I'm also playing solo. I have 2 squads from Armies Army that I funnily enough used for FiveCore. I like the rules a lot but the games were taking me 20 minutes or so solo, and instead of expanding I just kinda moved on. I picked up Pulp Alley quite a while ago but never played, ordered some lovely character minis from Ion Age but those need painting up.

My other 2 collections are 6mm WW2, 2 platoons and some 10mm AWI for Sharp Practice. My thought process jumps from one to the other - minis too small, too much to paint, game too small, etc. and I've not pushed myself to settle on one thing.

I spent quite a long time building foamcore terrain for 15mm sci-fi that I was honestly very happy with. Bookmarked this thread as it's a great impetus for me to just get on with my 15mm collection. I think I'll order some things I've had in mind for a while, a few vehicles / mechs, maybe a flyer, some more scatter terrain. I should post pics too ...

Ah I know that feeling - I jump around a lot too. Things take a lot longer but as long as i'm having fun and not stressing it keeps me happy!

Thought I'd better post as I haven't for a while - nothing finished this time though. I've got 20 or so of GZG's Brethren of the New Light on the painting desk at the moment. They're still intended for my more 'RPG' style games but I a) wanted to paint a 'military' unit for a change again (I'm regretting that grind already!) and b) wanted some checkpoint guards/'imperial' style troops. Hence the colourscheme.

The purple's finished on all of them, but the off-white has 2 more layers of highlight to go.

Of the 20 odd I'm painting I tried to pick half static and half dynamic poses - I'm envisaging a game where someone sneaks or approaches a less hostile force (the static 'guard' poses) but if it all kicks off I can replace them with the dynamic 'fighting' poses.

Now that I can really see the colourscheme though, I'm half tempted to make these the first group of my 'arctic' project I'd like to do - still sci-fi, but a bit more 'military' focussed (so less RPG characters and space-goats, more checkpoints and bunkers) with a definite COBRA/80's action movie vibe. A secret base, infiltration, missile silo type world. Don't really need to decide until it comes to basing, though if I 'go arctic'* I'll need to repaint all the hands as gloves!.

*'go arctic' has to be said in the voice of Alan Partridge saying 'go nuclear'.

It always amazes me how well some people can paint at 15mm.

I just see a nightmare when I look at a 15mm in bare metal, waiting to be painted. I just don'r have the patience for it so I don't bother (I used to collect Laserburn 15mm in the 80s so I did my share of painting 15mm back then).

The 15mm miniatures in this topic are fantastically painted... it is a marvel to behold :) .

Keep up the wonderful work.

Ah, thanks very much.

I've definitely got a few tricks down which help - black lining, extreme 'impressionistic' highlighting (I ignore the detail sometimes and just paint highlights where I 'want' them), washes (I don't know how Deano manages it using a layering system) and bold colours. My issue has become 28mm - I paint it so infrequently that my highlighting is way too bold and loose.

The improvement in sculpting and slight scale creep helps - There's some laserburn minis that I'd struggle to pick much out on. Equally, too much detail in the sculpt is something I try and avoid - I'm personally not a massive fan of the Daemonworld range - they're absolutely beautiful, but way too detailed to not look like absolute colour blobs with my painting style. Horses for courses I guess.

Having said that - your work on the HF 'squats' (can't remember the names) is fantastic - aren't those pretty much 18mm minis?

Hullo all,

I've had very, very little time to paint recently - what hobby time I have had has been spent sculpting space shrubs and beginning to get to grips with trying to sculpt my own minis  o_o

I have done a bit more basecoating on the purple jacketed chaps from earlier but to get back on the wagon I rattled out a really simple rusty robot

Here's from this range: https://theionage.com/collections/15mm-ion-age-universe-characters (https://theionage.com/collections/15mm-ion-age-universe-characters) - some of the minis in this range have really grown on me recently (though the adventurers are still spoilt by their guns). Anyway, only a quick post... as you were.

Great job on that GZG Brethren of the New Light model.  The colors really work well.

How tall is that mini head to toe?

I may have to pick some up.

Thanks very much.

The robot? About 17mm to top of his head, slightly thick base. Personally (though I'm not a massive scale stickler) he fits in fine well with other ranges.

Sorry no, I had meant the Brethren of the light model.  I know its a 15mm fig... but curious on the exact head to toe height.

Oh right - I guess 17mm too, I'll measure tonight. So much of my collection is GZG, which usually sits perfectly in the 'middle' of the 15mm scale-range, that I rarely worry about size disparity. I'll measure some shortly.

Very cool. I quite like the Ion Age miniatures, they can be a bit chunky but they’re pretty characterful (and unashamedly old school I think).

Doing some of your own sculpts? This I must see!

Thanks - yes, the Ion Age universe range is pretty good (I don't like *much* of the rest) but can be a little tall. The chap in green from this pic is from that range too

but I cunningly hid his height with perspective!

Don't hold your breath - turns out it's difficult! I've been resculpting arms and heads etc for donkeys, but I think I might have got a bit cockey with these sculpts from scratch... might have some WIP to show off next week.

Nice work.  May I ask a question?

Do you base all your minis on sand bases?  I have a few sci-fi interiors that I've matched my bases to (black and gray).  They look ridiculous on my Tattooine board.  Should I repaint them to match?

Thanks very much - I do now yeah, in my head consistent basing is the mark of a single 'project' (which all this character based Sci-Fi is). Problem is, I'd have the same issue as you if I wanted to set my games in a spaceship. There's no perfect answer really (clear bases? Ugh). A sandy colour with green flock seems to work well for lots of outdoors environments but still odd in a spaceship.

Edit: thanks Dr De'Ath. Above answer aimed at Oldben1. Green Mohawk was chose whilst I was painting the beats from the last post, very green!

Ockman - that does look good, reminds me of Spacejacker's old bases on tinysolitarysoldiers... a bit urban, a bit brown and green flock. Works in lots of scenarios.

Having said all that - I just like desert settings, hence even shoehorning my fantasy into a desert setting.

I do love your desert terrain and bases. I get a pang of regret that I didn't go that way, but now I'm too invested in whatever I've already got to change direction.

Whenever you see anything from me and think "That reminds me of Spacejacker's work", I can tell you that is because he's been my main inspiration since I started with 15mm miniatures.

His painting tutorials gave me confidence enough to start painting 15mm miniatures, his terrain inspired my terrain (= I stole every single idea) and made me go with a city board and a badlands/wilderness board. And he introduced (and enthused) me to Five Parsecs from Home. He and his blog has formed my hobby.

Now he's mainly doing music, at least according to his instagram. But his instagram (and the hashtag #15milminis)  is still a goldmine!

Hiya folks - gosh, can't believe it's been that long since I updated this thread! I feel like I've been painting as much Sci-fi as fantasy, but obviously I haven't finished as much. Here's a wee bit of terrain I knocked up with a GW Kastellan robot I got on eBay

Nothing too exciting - I've definitely gone overboard on the moss pads! - but he was quick and easy, nice bit of scatter terrain.

Wow! That GW Robot really fits the bill of an archaic, rusty robot! Good call! :-*

I don’t know how flat the face plate/visor is, but have you tried gluing cut up clear plastic, like the stuff you get from blister packets, in there. You just score the hell out of it with a knife in all different directions then just cut it to fit and glue it in.

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20140615_114954_zpskabg68hw.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140615_114954_zpskabg68hw.jpg.html)

Or even just cut wee bits of it off and glue it in the corners....

I love repurposing, this is awesome!

On using 40K in 15mm, I'm thinking about getting some Tyranid Rippers and Hormagaunts to use as alien horror, a Necron flyer (Doom Schyte?) as a 15mm dropship and loads of other things (like an imperial knight as a titan).

Still, I have more minis and terrain to build and paint before I can even ponder buying GW's plastic crack.

Thanks gents

@Andy - those wrecked bits are a HUGE inspiration for me, I need to go BIGGER for my next wreck robot (wish I could afford a Forgeworld titan to wreck!)

I'll try that blister pack method, that's a good idea.

@Ockman - thanks. The Kastellan is a really nice (but expensive!) kit, works really well in 15mm too.

I often look at the Necron flyer, flipped over and scrapped it would make a great buried, crashed starships of the ancients. Crashed ancient stuff is the best - I really like it for fantasy too!

I've been thinking recently of branching my sci-fi into two strands - one much more science-fantasy, inspired by stuff like Hyperlight Drifter

So ancient, massive, ruined stuff is high on my agenda...

Is that a big robot sword/hand/stuff hidden by jungle? That be cool! 8) you’ve soooo got to do that!

What about getting a toy Iron Man hand or even mask and covering it in foliage? They’d be HUGE compared to 15mm stuff. Even those cheap Poundland toy swords would work for that!

Man! The possibilities!......

Would you do the water part of those pictures too?

Yeah it's really great Hyperliht Drifter

@Andym - I'd love to to make a terrain board like that , funnily enough I've been looking at costume masks and helmets trying to find something. I'd love to make the it part submerged - I think that would look ace.

@Ockman - I did play it actually, but didn't love the game that much. It's a very cool setting though - the giant crawly mech you see up on the mountain range is ace.

I wasn't fully into it until I'd played about a third of the game, but after that I got obsessed! Then again I loved the storytelling and the main character. In my opinion it was the best game of 2017.

On my current campaign world (Golgotha Prime) I'm playing with the idea of multiple ancients and catastrophic events. Something like an old alien race finding ancient high-tech remains long ago, shielding the world by cloaking the entire system. Something happened that erradicated that alien race which also disrupted the cloaking field intermittently, until it finally failed.
Unity (or whatever the human-alien federation will be called) sent a scientific mission to this "appearing/disappearing star", shortly followed by a larger colonization fleet. Due to other events around that time, FTL-travel ceased to work for multiple centuries and no communication came through. When FTL became available again, new missions were sent to Golgotha Prime, only to find ruins of a technologically advanced human civilization (the remnants of the scientific mission and colonization effort), probably destroyed in some kind of civil war.

Nice work as always Jagg,
You remind me of a rogue trader era GW model which they did when 40k came out, consisting of a group of  beaky plastic Marines clambering up a destroyed titans leg and a pic I saw once of the head of the statue of liberty up to its chin in  sand  in a desert like earth.
Easter Island heads but with Star Trek Borg parts would be interesting to do also.

Keep it

Haha - well the 15mm sci-fi is sort of a never ending project, but I want to try some really alien stuff (weird colour groundwork, science-fantasy, ancient wreckage) and I think 6mm might be the way to go so I can make some 'epic' terrain (not 6mm skirmish mind, more like low element count mass battle.... we'll see).

I second that, don't abandon 15mm, though as you say 6mm offers great scope for what you're after.
I have started to do terrain pieces which can be used for 15 & 28mm. You could go the 6 - 15mm route.
Both scales are much more versatile.

Ah don't worry - I won't be abandoning 15mm sci-fi. In many ways I don't think of 15mm sci-fi as my main project anymore (even though it's about 70% of what I paint), it's something I paint around other projects. There's always more to do though!

Here's my latest - a GZG Xar and World of Twilight critter conversion. He's going to be a Bib Fortuna type character to accompany a Jabba tyoe gangster/slave trader I'm working on. Very pleased with him, thought the 'glaze' I use to do my basing has gone a bit weird around his legs - I think I'll slap another tuft in there.

Another cool mini, with another great paintjob!

I've got to learn how to make as nice highlights as you do...

My highlight philosophy is 4 layers then a 5th that's basically just dots. Easiest to see here:

Sounds a lot of effort but the last two layers are just so so quick as they're so sparse. Worth noting I also apply 2 gloss coats and then use Dullcote, which does flatten contrast a little. It's why all my WIP pics looks a bit more extreme - it's intentional (honest)! Basically, next time you think you're finished, mix up a murther highlight and dot it around at the most appropriate places.

Hiay all,

Decided to take a few pics of everything I've painted in the past year...here's what i wrote on the blog:

I’m starting to get my brain into gear for this season of Lead Painters’ League (assuming it's on this year), and that got me thinking about everything I’ve produced since the start of the last one.

One of the things I enjoyed about LPL was that the ‘pressure’ of keeping up a consistent flow of minis at a high standard (debatable) forced me to learn a few things – it’s where I started pushing my highlights further, using less washes and more layering (because of the drying time) and got my desert basing formula down to a tee. It’s really where my consistent 15mm Sci-Fi project ‘started’.
Admittedly it’s not the most minis in the world, and I’m sure there’s painters out there who could produce this in a month (though, in all fairness, it’s not the only stuff I’ve painted) but it’s a nice and consistent cast of minis, which is all I wanted it to be. So this year, there’ll be plenty more 15mm sci-fi groups, plus a lot more 15mm Fantasy.

Here's the sci-fi batch (not the easiest thing to take pics of)

and I'll be posting my Fantasy group over on my fantasy thread: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=102905.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=102905.0)

A very lovely collection indeed! They look like the cast of a movie, one that I would definitely watch even if it was limited to a short release on Betamax.

Looking forward to the coming year’s produce.

That's exactly what I'm going for - cheers! Rubber costumes and dusty sets - I love that wave of schlocky b-movie sci-fi that followed Star Wars... very silly, often crap but great for setting space adventures in.

And now, a couple of new bits! (sorry, slightly dodgy photos ahead!)

Firstly, here's a very silly space-barbarian. I had the urge for a He-Man type chap, so a tiny bit of greenstuff and some paintwork 'conversion' gives us him:

I've got a Malig campainger from the Ion Age to go with him as a pathetic bag carrier, slightly Slaine-esque.

Next up, a sort of Jabba type fella I wanted as the leader of a space-slaver caravan i intend to make. I'm not overjoyed with this mini - there's something about him that feels a little 'unfinished' (maybe the black eyes, or the nails) and the bracelet I gave him (for no good reason) isn't the best look in the world. Still, nice to box him off.

Another of those epic painting logs with imagination and finesse.

I don't see anything wrong with the baby-Jabba. But you could paint some texture on her (must be a she!) back, like stripes or dots, in order to make her more interesting. Just an idea. Love the bracelet.

@Stroezie - You're right, I need to catch up on my TWW thread.

Here's another quick chap I've already put on Instagram. He's an ammo carrier from GZG, but I liked his pose and the canisters could be anything, I think he slots in pretty well as an (alien) civvy.

Hullo folks,

I've been working on some other bits recently, in between a really hectic work schedule, so haven't had much to post.

Here though, is a chap I did manage to see off:

He (or maybe she actually...) is from the 28mm Rogue Stars range, but it quite a delicate sculpt so scales fairly well with my 15s (though obviously big and tall). I like that multi-size alien thing.

The casting wasn't too grand though, so I had to sculpt a visor and a few bits onto the head, very pleased with those additions now though!

Cheers folks - it’s a great mini, the standout from the Rogue Stars range for me (although I do like the big lion-man too).

I’m on a massive terrain kick at the mo - doing a whole chunk of stuff for my desert fantasy (a town and a fort and a board with a road down the middle) but I’m also shopping for bits to make a sci-Fi frontier town at the mo (basically adobe buildings and gribbles). Expect more of that soon.

I did finish off some ruins for fantasy recently, but they’ve only had an outing for test games of the new Five Parsecs from Home:

This is them on my 30x30 skirmish board.

It is a little bit I do two things:

- play games designed for small boards but convert inches to CM (so it becomes well over a 2x2).
- play RPG style encounters, so if it’s over quickly - all good.

I also like ruleset where cover really matters (like the old 5 Parsecs from Home) because that makes the battlefield feel, if not bigger, then certainly more complex.

Thank you sir - not been posting much recently, must jump back into your thread for more inspiration!

Top add to what Jagannath said I'd give this advice. If you can't built out, Build up! verticality is so often under used in game, But on a smaller table if gives extra room to move and encourages 3d movement.

Gosh - it's been ages since I posted in this thread.

Only a short post here – a quick bounty hunter I painted up. I’ve been tinkering with rulesets that I could play out very small, RPG style encounters based around a bounty hunter (currently tweaking Inquisitor) and wanted a new ‘Main Character’ to play with.

Next for 15mm is probably a patrol I’m slowly working through with grassy bases. I’m thinking of recreating some early Rogue Trader vibe (grassy table, trees, concrete bunkers). Nice to have something a bit different (I’ve also got some arctic bits on the go too!)

Evening all,

Bit of a shift for this thread - I decided to treat myself to a 3D Printer having designed and ordered a few prints I was happy with. I've designed and printed quite a few things I'm happy with so far (in fact, I really need to get some more painting done!) and I'm having about the most hobby fun I've had.

Here's a selection of my success so far:

I'm definitely on a 'haulage' theme at the moment - two hover lorries, a smaller hover truck, and a load of crates. The crates in this pic are all one piece, designed to fit squarely on the back of the flat bed truck. I've also got a load of individual crates for more terrain and scattering around other terrain pieces.

This beast is almost finished:

I've had loads of fun - any dodgy texture here is from my amateurish salt weathering, not the print quality.

then I think I'll paint the smaller truck next

For me, vehicles serve as terrain to fight around and set scenes, so I'm loving these chunky vehicles with areas that can be peaked over (partial cover) or hid behind.

I've got big plans for all this, but need to keep upping my skill levels first!

Thanks comment stalwarts!

Tried to print a massive new vehicle and had my first print failure (well, the bed ran out of resin stupidly overnight) but I'm going to leave that vehicle for now (or maybe order an FDM print of it) and go back to modelling scatter terrain - I'm trying to make 10-15 interesting 'objects' then combine them in different ways on bases. I suspect I might regret that a tough when I come to paint, but it's a fun experiment!

Thanks mate.

I got an Anycubic Photon - I'm really pleased with it.

Prints are fantastic - if you learn to orientate them well they come out almost perfect.

I don't find the clean up particularly difficult - the impression I get from reviews is that folks from non-model making backgrounds sometimes come to 3D printing and are frustrated by the prep/post, but for those of us used to cleaning mould lines, fixing sculpts, cleaning resin etc. it's really not a hassle.

If I'm honest there may be a point in the future where I might want to pick up an FDM printer for larger terrain - resin is much more expensive. I would guess that the larger truck below cost me ~£4 to print. Add in the odd failed print, and learning the ropes and the cost is probably on a par with buying similar vehicles from somewhere like Brigade. That's fine for me, because it's about making things for myself, but it's worth factoring in.

I'm definitely having the most hobby fun I've had in absolutely ages though - next big step is to learn to sculpt organic stuff so I can make my own infantry.

It’s rare that I can post twice in such close succession!

Not much this round – managed to finish off another bounty hunter (man, I’m obsessed!). Love this mini from the command pack of GZG’s Islamic Federation range. There’s nowhere near enough pistol armed minis out there so I try and make use of any that I come across.

Haha well I'm lucky that I have downtime at work sometimes and work from home ~50% of the time, and I try to get a lot done in short bursts (I paint consistently for half an hour before work, which adds up) so projects seem to tick along.

One of the things I've enjoyed about the 3D work is it doesn't feel like 'hobby time', it's a different activity, so I can just relax on the sofa and design, but it's still productive!

Yeah it’s working for me - partly because it feels like ‘free’ time (instead just watching the news with a coffee). I don’t get any messy jobs done (cleaning minis, basing pruning etc) I generally just do one stage (basecoat, first highlight, whatever) if it’s a single mini or just do a stage on 3 minis if I’m doing a batch. I’m really tight for time at the moment, so it’s helpful.

Thanks for the info Jagg,
All I have to decide now is whether to get a pla or a resin printer. Both seem to have pros & cons.

Don't know if you know but there is a great scifi stl Ks campaign here,
Definitely worth a look.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wowbuildings/wowbuildings-further-space-adventures-3d-print-stl/description (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wowbuildings/wowbuildings-further-space-adventures-3d-print-stl/description)

As to painting, i prefer to paint in batches of 5 or 10.
One can paint quite a number of minis that way in a short time , off course depending on the scale ... but I find that 15mm is the most forgiving.

I tend to paint a singe colour or two on a batch (to help tie them together) then go in and finish each individual - it's rare I paint 'squads' or anything like that though.

Thanks for the link - I'm actually working on starting my own little thing at the moment so not spending any more, but there's some nice stuff in there.

Heya folks,

A a it of news - Blades and Blasters miniatures is now open!

It's a mix of 3D files for those with a printer at home and a either physical prints or castings for those who don't! A spin off of my constant experimenting, and hopefully a welcome addition to the sometimes waxing sometimes waning sci-fi scene.

I've put the first wave of things up live, with more to come soon.

I've also added a little newsletter sign up, which I'll probably put put monthly or so with new releases and the like.

Wish me luck!

PS - Not to worry, this thread will still be all kinds of 15mm hobby related, not just my stuff (assuming I have time to paint other things!)

Heya all,

Wave 2 is ready and up on the shop!

I’ve got quite a lot at on the go at the moment, and a few bits I decided to rework so wave 2 is a smaller batch (and a bit more colourful!)

The scatter terrain is something I hope others will find useful - I’ve found it really handy! I’ve taken to a pretty speedy method for painting scatter terrain - basecoat, Ivory drybrush then a tonal inkwash to tie together.

Anyway - I hope to get the chance to finish some GZG infantry this week, so something non-shop related soon.

Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi - plans for next wave...
Post by: Jagannath on April 11, 2019, 12:17:07 PM
Hullo all,

I thought I'd note down some ideas for the next wave I'm working on at the moment - mostly because that's also the stuff I'm planning for games! (Blades and Blasters stuff will *strictly* be things I too want for my games!)

First up (and only picture, for now) is this 'kit' for a crashed shuttle:

I've actually iterated on the 'damage' since this pic - it's better and subtler now, but you get the idea.

Rather than get far too cocky trying to cast something that won't fit everyone's needs - this will be the core components for folks to add to their own scenic bases, 'cut' at an angle to help sinking it into the base. It'll be a crashed shuttle (with an option for damage or not damaged side) with a couple of crates that have spilled out.

I'm also sculpting a dead pilot that will be a resin cast added - it's a one sided cast (he's lying the ground) so I can cast him!

I want to game some games where a downed pilot survives in the wastes of a planet stricken by Plague Zombies - Rogue Trader style, but using Mantic TWD rules.

Eventually I'll release the undamaged shuttle, but I'm not totally happy with it yet.

After that, I'm still tinkering with a building set - These are a pretty big commitment in terms of casting (lots of silicone!) so they need to be bang on. These might even be bumped into the next wave.

These buildings will be accompanied by a set of building accessories (doors, widgets, pipes etc.) for those who'd rather detail their own scratch builds.

I'm reworking the small crate holding van to be an enclosed rear cab, just for a bit of variety (it's a little Postman Pat in spaaaaace though!)

Finally - SOME SCULPTS!

These'll take a little while - I'm currently speaking to a sculptor, and also sculpting some of my own bits to add some denizens to my frontier-world.

Who know's though - if inspiration strikes some other bits may well appear!

Ah, you just keep on impressing us!

Love the idea of a crashed shuttle with its cargo spilled. And since I am Scratchbuilder Numero Uno, I can't wait to see what your building details will be. I would love some computer consoles, keypads and other little stuff to put on my builds!

That's good, because we've got those!

Nice thing about doing this digitally is that whatever I make to add to buildings I can just separate off as accessories too:

number pad,
windows (couple of types)
Doors,
Vents,
consoles,
weird gribbly bits.

if I remember later I'll @ you in an instagram pic, see what you think.
Title: Re: Jagannath's 15mm Sci Fi (H4NK the Robot - 15/4/19)

Afternoon all

I've put prints of H4NK the Robot up for sale on the site

I designed him as a general scale guide to pop in pictures - helpful for judging how big my buildings are, but I was having trouble printing many of him, so I just had him available as a free file to begin with. Last couple of weeks I've been using a new  slicer (Chitubox - it's brilliant) and he's much easier to print now, so everyone can have one!

Here he is in comparison to some other wee chaps from my collection:

Funnily enough his pose and smaller head make him look quite cool against tiny scales - I was messing around the other day. I might make a wee diorama...

Well, work progresses on the new bits!

I've finished sculpting and casting the downed pilot, and frankly - I'm bloody chuffed with him!

Here is is with just a wash to check the detail - super easy to cast too, only one spot where I had to dig out bubbles before it set.

My idea for this set is that it's much more of a 'kit', rather than sculpting and detailing a base then casting the whole lot - you'll get the ship and the crates and the pilot (might make him optional) and I'll also have an article on the site with ideas on how to detail the base.

This is the kit as a whole

and this is where I'm up to with it so far

Really pleased with this one so far. I'm keeping the pilot separate - partly because I think on the shop I'll offer him as an extra, so that makes product shots easier, but also because I like the idea of using him for other things too - I'll be painting mine up in  very similar scheme to some generic 'guards' I'm working on (they're like Storm Troopers in my sci-fi universe, sort of army - sort of garrison/occupying police force) and I think the dead pilot will do double duty as a murdered guard.

Well it took some faffing but I've finished wave 3!

Really chuffed with this batch - especially the downed pilot (my first ever cast of something I sculpted!) and the downed shuttle (because it's very cool!)

I also put an article up on shop on how to get the most of the shuttle kit, because it's a bit different to my other pieces - that's liked here for those interested:

https://bladesandblasters.com/blogs/news/a-scenic-base-for-a-downed-shuttle

It's possible I might do some 6mm bits next, but I have got a whole chunk more 15mm on the go - including a not-crashed shuttle - so we'll see what get's finished first!

I’ve got some test prints running as we speak - I think the trucks (at least) should be OK simply scaled down, without needing to tweak any detail. We’ll see. I’ve also got some building designs that I want to try scaled down (partly because I want to take a crack at at ‘battle at the farm’ type scenario in 6mm, so need some terrain!).

Post by: Jagannath on January 04, 2020, 06:38:54 PM
Evening all,

Finally had some time to stop experimenting and finish a 15!

He does represent a bit of an experiment though - making Heroforge minis work for 15mm.

Here's the recipe, and my thinking:

1 - Proportion: As standard, Heroforge minis don't look right scaled to 15mm, They're too thin and delicate (in fact, my feeling is that they're a bit to delicate even at 28mm). 15mm miniatures have big heads too -  they're not just small 28s.

So, thinking about the many ways I can rescale a mini I figured the best appriach would be to keep the mini as short as possible (less reduction when scaling, which stops limbs getting too thin) and increase the head size. I scale the minis to the smallest height ('3 foot tall') and give them size 5 heads.

Then I bulk them up, increasing the weight and musculature on them - they'll look too muscly on screen.

2. Posing - Again, this is an exercise in thinking through the medium how to make sure these minis look like the rest of my collection. For posing I try and replicate one piece, cast miniatures - I've been using the Rogue Trader adventurer range as inspiration. This means that in the zoomed in view of the Heroforge interface I create little contact points and overlaps, knowing they won't be viewable when printed and painted.

Here's an  example - by ever so slightly embedding the hand into the holster, I've made the 'structure' of the mini significantly stronger, and removed the need for some supports. And when shrunk, you won't be able to tell.

I do the same with two handed, 'armed' poses (as above) and slightly embed into the chest.

Finally I buy the download without a base, import into Tinkercad at 68% (that makes an upright human roughly 16.5mm to the eyes, perfect to scale with GZG). In Tinkercad I add a small, 0.5mm bases (to help with affixing to my MDF basing, and make an digital 'conversions' I might want to do (I often alter guns - Heroforge doesn't have a great selection).

Once printed (I print at 0.03 on a Photon) I make sure to clean up any marks from supports and any weird print details (you'll see a missed a little spot on the back of his left calf - can't see that in the flesh).

Things to be aware of:

This process is intended for resin printers, no idea how it would work for FDM.

Chins! - It can be difficult to add supports to chins that do't get stuck to the chest of the model during printing and wreck detail. On balance I prefer not to add supports to chins, and just to resculpt them if they don't print. It easier than reparing detail on the chest.

Poses - I find the two handed rifles poses to be crap, so I tend to pick a single handed pose then adjust it until it looks good. Shoulderpads are your friend here - they'll hide weird, twisted shoulders. Again, where possible make your pose a 'tight' as you can to improve strength - printer resin is actually very tough, but every little helps!

Converting with paint - at this scale, you can easily tweak some of the fantasy looking clothing to sci-fi just with paint. Don't be afraid to play with combinations.

Converting digitally - you can use the time in Tinkercad to add any other bits you might want (I've added backpacks I found on Thingiverse, for example).

I'll admit this isn't cheap, but it is fun!

It’s good that I can have characters I can’t find elsewhere (I’m currently printing a group of 2 slavers and 3 captured slaves) plus I’m a bit of a stickler for scale, and this solves that problem (because I can adjust the scale myself!)

you'll see the second image is a comparison with a GZG mini. YMMV but I have so many GZG minis that I use those as my scale standard. So spot on to my taste.

Yeah my Photon is really fantastic for 15mm. There's barely any print lines (particularly in the flesh, obviously my images are much bigger than they are really). I print at 0.03mm layers - 15mm minis take about 4 hours (though with resin that's true if you print one mini or 20). The actual printing cost is really cheap for 15mm - I reckon he was about £0.06 worth of resin.

Wow! You're right it does look spot on thanks. I have been looking at all the possibilities, I have many male figures in different races but need females to fill in some rolls.

Exactly - I've got a load of space women on the printer at the mo, there's barely any out there in 15mm.

Post by: Jagannath on January 26, 2020, 11:29:10 PM
Continuing my new year motivation, here's a few more of the current crop I'm working up.

Firstly - I'm slowly knocking up with Heroforge + digital conversion + actual sculpting some homages to the original Rogue Trader sculpts I love (that I can't belive no one has knocked off in 15mm).

One of my absolute favourites is the Space Eunuch - such a silly mini, he's everything I love about Rogue Trader.

Here's my take (apologies - on my laptop screen I can see these are a touch out of focus)

Mostly created in Heroforge, I made his bottom half nude then digitally added the belt, kneepads and codpiece myself in Meshmixer. When it came to painting, I had to go for the classic scheme from the Rogue Trader poster (he's in the middle, labelled 'Scum'):

All in all, a really handy character.

Whilst I had the red out, I boxed off my take on Simon Roy's version of John Prophet, from the really excellent Image comics reboot.

This was pure Heroforge except the blade, that I altered in meshmixer.

I'm *really* pleased with this mini - he's meant to be the very first Prophet we meet, on earth, before he finds his dolmantle - and I think I've captured the slight Conan-in-space vibe that Simon Roy gives him.

I wasn't perfectly faithful to the uniform but I'm chuffed regardless.

Incidentally if you haven't read Image comics' Prophet you should - it's proper bonkers multi-verse sci-fi. Nothing down to earth here. I get a new idea every time I turn a page.

Next up I'm aiming for a group of 5-10 muties - in the 2000ad/Strontium Dog vibe. Folks to cause trouble in dusty space towns.

WOW!  :o

I wish I knew more about 3D  printers and and reconfiguring  structures. Well I guess that's  my goal for this year then. :D

It‘s totally changed the hobby for me in 15mm and 6mm - so much so I opened a little shop! I’d really suggest a resin printer given you do small scales - you’ll get much more use. I love it.

Just vehicles and buildings matey - can’t sell these figures.

These are terrific - the Space Eunuch especially!

Thanks - he’s not quite as ‘ugly’ as the original, but as a first go of replicating I’m pretty pleased.

Awesome minis, mate!

Thanks dude! Easier to type here than Instagram - my red recipe!

Black primer obv
Vallejo opaque red
GW wazdakka red
GW Wazadakka mixed with GW Firedragon Bright
Even more Firedragon in the mix as a final highlight.

It's not my favourite colour, but the above recipe is one of my favourites to paint - coverage is just so good.

You do know that if the guy with the saw sword,  had black hair with ponytail  and a black mustache, would be a step away from being Zardoz!  lol

Thanks dude. I love you version that you used as the bodyguard/lover of the water seller, I revisit that post all the time.

Next on my de-embiggening of Rogue Trader Adventurer minis is the Psyker and the Official.

Well, it's only a few figures but I've finally finished some more minis. All of these are 3D printed  mostly Heroforge and one from Dutchmogul.

This guy was a bit of an experiment and his mullet really gives him character!

This guy is meant to be an imperial official - I figure he can be useful as a character but also as a bit of a scenario mini. I'm actually already painting a second version of this guy with some accompanying guard for a Rogue Trader meets Director Krennic vibe.

This guy is by the brilliant Dutchmogul and was orginally for 28mm. I scaled him down a bit but wanted him still very tall in 15mm. I'm really pleased with this mini, it's great in the flesh but the colour is *impossible* to take a pic of!

Finally (and still a litte glossy!) is another scenario mini, a prisoner. I gave him long hair and a beard, like he's been captured a while... but I think maybe he just looks like a space BeeGee.... ho hum!

Lovely stuff as always, quite a bit to catch up on since my last visit! Those 3D prints are looking rather swish, I do like that John Prophet one in particular.

I just treated myself to a start-to-finish re-read of this thread. I love all the variety in terms of characters you've amassed with your collection. Seeing your bounty hunters rub shoulders with civilians, hulking aliens and space police really gets my juices flowing. It does amuse me to thing that you wish the RT adventurers were available in 15mm - I keep thinking the opposite with some of those 15mm sculpts - I wish they were 28mm!!

I do particularly like your tall pink crustacean alien from this latest batch :)

Ah thanks all, kind words.

I think I  might go on a bit of a terrain kick next - need to make some more bits for the shop really, and I've got a hankering for some western style shenanigans in a duty settlement.

Oh that's brave  it's pretty ropey at the start of this thread!

:o

More awesome stuff... I really should try this Heroforge thingy. Good job!

If you do, it's really important to play with the proportions - I made that mistake at first and wasted a few minis. It's really reinvigorated my hobby though - I'm happy to pay more for minis that are exactly as I want them to be!

This alien was a bold choice of colors but he works great!

Cheers - horrible to photograph though, the painting is a fair bit more nuanced and subtle than it looks.

That Alien is excellent! Love the different hues on the guy, really works with his rotund nature  lol

Also I heard that the heads on heroforge figs can come out too large in 15mm when scaled down but that doesn't seem to be too big of an issue with your minis. Certainly helps identify the different characters.

So the problem I found (for my taste) when I first started experimenting was that 15mm minis are really not 'realistically' proportioned so when you scale down a 'normal' heroforge minis (down to about 45%) it just looks wrong. So I made their heads bigger, their height an absolute minimum then only scale them down 68% - which keeps them chunky. Their basically all Heroforge hobbits, scaled down a bit. On screen they look a bit daft (their heads look significantly bigger) but I think that's true of all digital renders: 'realsitic' won't look good as a mini.

I also keep their poses as close to singel piece casting posing as I can, so they fit into my collection well.
