Made from modular bits I made in general with some Copplestone resin and toxin refinery bits thrown about.

That looks pretty cool. What size is the layout? Are your base sections mdf tiles?
Title: Re: My Secret Base.
Post by: MalcyBogaten on January 25, 2015, 01:36:37 PM
The Table is 10' x 6' and I can cover the lot in various tiles depicting dungeon flooring/flagstones.
I started with the AD&D basic dungeon tile set and now have 3 boxes of the stuff.
They are very nice and you can see the boxes lids and bases used on the raised sections.
The other less glossy stuff is home-made from the cheap artists canvass boards I purchased from "The Works" covered in address labels and then painted grey with dry-brushes of lighter grey and parchment then lined with a black ball-point pen.

The pipelines are made from PDQ rolls my local shop keeps for me, as are the pressure storage vats from bigger till rolls they asked me "Could I use?" So I did.
You can probably play spot the DIY item on most of the rest.

I still have quite a backlog of painting to do on most of it, but just tend to Gunmetal the bulk and go back later when I have an idea.

There is no MDF involved at the moment. Even the baseboards are two 6'x6' chipboard sections covered in green grit paper that act as the table itself.

It does look quite effective though can get slightly over populated in ancillary rubbish which you can only see a bit of in these pictures. (I didn't want to over do the first pictures)

Nice, it can be used for a lot of things : super heroes, cyberpunk/shadowrun, james bond, modern oil refenery, etc...

Another couple with a change of the main bits.

The tanks are 99p store plastic big rig trailers with other bits from the spare parts crate added. More upright PDQ rolls and till rolls with Tron action figure bases added and ladders from those Poundland Russian red jeeps slapped on the front.

Again more to do here to pretty it up. But very usable in the short term.

And I do like to get gaming use out of things.

This set up is spectacular.  I can see how you might make it prettier, but there's something about the grubbiness that make it more realistic.  I plan to steal many of your ideas for my Colonial Marines and Blade Runner projects.  Thank you in advance.

Would you believe the cargo beds of Fire Engine Trucks from Poundland!
You can also see the Tender sections on the first two photos that came off of them at the left of the photo.

If you mean the kinda walkways they are a mix of lorry chassis parts and toxin refinery bits glued on top.

There are also steps made from painted cheap dominos stacked up!

Thanks Puuka

The PDQ rolls are hard acrylic and are not easy to cut even with a hacksaw. (I have tried but am to attached to my fingers to try again! lol)

Heroclix are a great source of civilian style figures with more conversion potential other than just a paintjob.

Glad everyone seems to be enjoying my lunacy! :)

MalcyB that is a triumph. :-*

I felt pleased with myself when I managed to complete a 2ft square of sci fi base and all I did was paint up Ainsty stuff. You went and built it all! Awesome.

Also thanks for using the Copplestone stuff cos it reminded me I have a box full somewhere.

More WIP and partial builds.
The two buildings mix bits of GW 40K with Zvezda fortress models and DIY products.

The Pressure storage to be are just the caps from the undercoat spray cans with Heroclix and poker chips tops to be added!
Also some Poundland shotglasses with Clix bases and the engines from a broken Star Fury model.

Great work all around.

I particularly like your use of tanker tanks with greebles. I've also used clix base pieces before, but your use of poker chips really adds a nice additional layer. Consider these ideas stolen!

This also reminds me that I've got a few of those mechs waiting for paint. I'll have to get to work on them as well now….

Some of the Memory banks or heat exchangers or whatever you want to call them?

I call them Tic-Tac boxes with wall plugs and other stuff glued to them. Then Gun-metalled till I can think what else to do to them?

Plus a Vehicle I picked up for 50p from a toyfair with an AA turret slapped on.

I like it anyway.

I like your use of tic-tac boxes.  You're greebling skills are impressive!  However, black undercoat with gunmetal drybrush might pop better -and probably be almost as fast to paint- than a uniform gunmetal coat. You can always drybrush some color later over the gunmetal.

Post by: MalcyBogaten on January 28, 2015, 08:10:53 PM
Good point! ;)

Wish I had thought of it when I did these. I do have dozens more to do though! As a certain person went on a Tic Tac eating frenzy for me. :o Mystic S!

Yeah! Black undercoat is definitely the way.

Getting the labels off without scratching the plastic too much is a pain though.

Anybody got any ideas? I've tried soaking in washing up liquid.

Now, the tables were made from cardboard tops with bits of electrical and plastic detritus stck on them. The legs were sprues from plastic Amazonian Warrior women.
The chairs are shelf holders for cabinets with the base being a PC case screw slightly indented into one end then painted your colour choice. (Or in my case half-painted)
The bulkhead door was from the end of a die-cast car box jeep, which I got loads of at a toyfair again cheap.
The rubble markers cardboard with scale bricks and blocks glued on top.
Simple that's me ;D

Those chairs are awesome. I would never have thought of that.
Title: Re: My Secret Base.
Post by: eilif on January 29, 2015, 02:12:52 PM
For labels, a soak in soapy water, possibly followed by some goo-gone.  It's a citrus based goo remover that's fairly cheap and works well.

For the black undercoat, cheap hardware store spray paint works fine.  That plus a quick drybrush may be faster (not counting drying time) overall than a heavy silver coat.

Those chairs are awesome. I would never have thought of that.
I was just thinking the same thing!  Around here, they're usually made of polypropylene which is annoying to paint, but the Krylon series of Camo and "Fusion" plastic spray paints stick really well.

You know, there's a lotta love around these parts for Transformers, so I suppose you shouldn't apologize, but I don't see it. However, that one massive succeed blots out a lot of bad memories. Heck, those are ginormous, AND gorgeous!

Damn impressive, and just as they are now.Great Bronzen Beasts for Fantasy, arcane mechanisms for VSF, and great on the ground Future Wars. Whole lotta love for three quid. ;->=

Do you think there are enough palm trees?

Definitely should be an inquiry; I dare say a black mark on the fortresses commander's record.

However, for an enemy actually getting up to a battle instead of just a slaughter, should be right.  :)

Thanks!

By the way, I can see Velma at university, but Shaggy?  ;)

Oh God Yes :D

We actually got two games in tonight in two and a half hours and that was with trying out new rules added to the much abused "One Page Rule system" We use found online by a friend.

“ONE PAGE FANTASY SKIRMISH” by John David Slor

Very adaptable and we have heavily.

It was two nil to the visitors. But we had a real good laugh. Mainly at my inability to roll High dice when needed and then Low dice when needed.

Next week I intend to use them as they were supposed to be with Saurian Infantry from Indyclix rebased.

Piccies as I pose them and then when we play!

I'm adding the Army of Atlantis (Or at least part of it) Plus SHED when I get the miniatures together here.
The Atlantean Army I've been building over the Years, has grown to become a mainstay of mine.

The Figures can be used in Victoriana, PULP and Future Wars thus I felt alright posting the Army of Atlantis here.
There are more figs in the army from Warmachine, Copplestone, Foundry and Wargods but I've just got the Automatons and their main Infantry placed out here. Mainly Indyclix Saurian Trropers and Heroclix Parademons and Scouts rebased.

Lots of Cheapo Robot toys and some Mageknight steam golems with Reaper Iron Golems and Brass Cannon Added.

Anyway on with the Piccies! (SHED will follow!)

Some Hydra Minis which sometimes get press ganged into Base attacking or defending.

And I know the Missile needs more work. But the miniature was part of a 99p set that the derrick style watchtowers and some Palm Trees came with in the previous photos of the thread.

There were also some truly awful armymen figures as well. (Binned as even charity didn't want them)

Haven't posted here in a while!

But I had a look at an Apple Juice carton closer and had an idea!

Always looking for doors to separate corridor or rooms from the complex. I have started taking these off of certain juice cartons.

Add a wheel to the handy little pin locator that they have and presto! Bulkhead door!
Just stick to base of your own choosing!
Painted very roughly as I did about two dozen of these.

Locking side with added sealing wheel!

Outer side nice and smooth!

Very useful and recycling is the key!

Hopefully this'll be inspiring to some of you?

I found these Four-in-a-row games in Poundland bought a couple then took them apart.
Turned the counter tray catcher things upside down and painted them in a concrete style.

They will make raised plinthy type dock areas as you can see.

I can mingle them into the base.

The actual game part of the toy has the round open holes to see the counters within (Not Pictured yet!) will possibly be painted black then gun metalled to make some sort of vat grill type flooring! I've not decided yet!

It has been a while for this thread for me?!?!

I picked up some Triang railway bridge piers from a toyfair and then wondered what I could do with them? o_o

Out of the 6 piers 2 are a bit too deep for this use. But I will find something to do with them!

Making them into Lab furniture, such as bookcase and experimental/research tables using bits from my spares box and Ainsty retro monitors seemed the best thing.

Lots of circuit jumpers, components out of old PC's cut from the circuit boards and even some other railway carriage bits added to fill up the tables. Yet to be painted but I think they'll add to my base! :D

Very clever.
