Title: Town Attack! A Wars of the Roses battle report and pictorial narrative.
Post by: Captain Blood on January 26, 2015, 05:04:39 PM
Right then  - long post with many piccies coming up… You have been warned :)
 
So a few British Lead Adventurers met up for a day’s gaming in the pub yesterday.

While most of the chaps were engaged on Mars (VSF), Silent Invader and I fought out a small Wars of The Roses battle using his ‘By arrow, bill and sword’ rules.

The scenario was a ‘town attack’ - very loosely modelled on First St. Albans.

Since they would have to attack over a series of obstacles, the Yorkists had a slight advantage in numbers - 120 figures as opposed to the defending Lancastrians with 100.
The balance of forces was more or less even - although over half the Yorkist force were longbows or mercenary handguns / crossbows, whereas the defending Lancastrians had only one third of their force as missile-armed.

The photos aren’t quite up to scratch. Haven’t really mastered my new DSLR camera yet. And the lighting in the gaming room is awful. Still, it gives you the gist…  :)

All the terrain is from my collection, except for the trees contributed by Silent Invader.

The Yorkist army (Captain Blood’s) approaches from the West.
They must pass the church, fields and fishponds to reach the town proper.

As the Yorkist centre forms up…

The Lancastrian defenders (Silent Invader’s) move quietly through the town towards the perimeter…

Establishing an outer defensive line…

The Lancastrians fire their field piece to open proceedings - ripping an impressive hole (four dead!) through the ranks of Yorkist longbowmen advancing towards them around the Church…

Meanwhile, in the centre, the Yorkists throw forward another company of longbows. A prolonged  archery duel ensues with heavy casualties on both sides.

Other Lancastrian archers rush to defend the makeshift barricade across the western entrance to the town…

...but lacking the mass to compete effectively, are quickly decimated by withering handgun and crossbow fire from a large company of mercenaries the Yorkists have deployed against them.

The Lancastrians send a heavily armoured body of men-at-arms to reinforce the barricade…

The Lancastrian commander confers behind the centre of his defensive line. He decides his main battle will hold its ground in hope of drawing the mass of enemy men-at-arms across the field and out into the open.

Sure enough, the Yorkist men-at-arms in the centre, begin to advance through the churchyard…

A general view of the field… The Yorkist longbows on their right wing have been devastated by archery and occasional cannon balls. Opposing large bodies of longbowmen are now reduced to small parties. The Yorkist bowmen take shelter behind the churchyard wall (bottom right)

But are their commander ruthlessly orders them forward into the cornfield to attempt to clear out the surviving Lancastrian archers holding the wall…

Meanwhile, in the town centre, the main Lancastrian body silently awaits the onslaught…

As the Yorkists begin to roll forward…

The Yorkist longbowmen in the cornfield are taken in the flank by a sudden onrush of Lancastrian horse…

The Yorkist commander immediately commits his reserve of mounted men-at-arms to chase off the Lancastrian horsemen…

The Lancastrian longbowmen having largely been silenced, the Yorkist men-at-arms scramble over the churchyard wall and out into the cornfield…

The Lancastrian commander awaits them…

Having killed or driven off all the enemy longbowmen, the Yorkist bills and bows now begin to clamber over the hedgerows and make their way around the fishpond…

The Yorkist line steadily advances…

Until in the centre of the field, the heavy armour of the Yorkist and Lancastrian men-at-arms finally clash at the wall.

While the Yorkist knights on horseback, having chased off the Lancastrian horse, charge down a lane into some enemy handguns…

And the Lancastrians’ field piece fails to score a hit on the sitting target…  :(

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the field, the Lancastrian men-at-arms holding the barricade start to take casualties from the mercenaries facing them…

…so they charge out and take the mercenaries in a narrow frontage between two hedges, where the mercenaries weight of numbers is negated. The Lancastrian commander hopes this feint will draw Yorkist troops from the centre, thus relieving the pressure on his front line. The fully armoured Lancastrian men-at-arms commence chopping their way through the body of poorly armoured missile troops with gusto…

And although a group of Yorkist billmen swing round to take them in the rear…

The valiant Lancastrian men-at-arms have soon decisively driven back the remaining mercenaries…

The Yorkist billmen now follow up and a vicious melee takes place…

In the centre, the Lancastrian commander pulls his armoured men back to his second defensive wall line - leaving a screen of his longbows and crossbows to draw the sting of the Yorkist onslaught at close range.

But the Yorkists seize the initiative and clamber over the wall to fall upon the hapless missile troops, chopping them to pieces or driving them off in short order...

...before advancing on the Lancastrians’ last ditch defensive line…

Meanwhile, the Yorkist cavalry, having spotted dust raised by the Lancastrian horse shifting fast to the opposite side of the battlefield, surge across the centre of the field to head them off…

Both mounted contingents now plough into the increasingly messy, bloody and confused melee in front of the barricade.

The Yorkists advance their field piece to the cover of the eastern churchyard wall – only to discover there’s not much left for them to shoot at…

Three plucky Lancastrian men-at-arms finally manage to cut their way through the mercenaries and break out. They head for the church, intending to claim sanctuary.

Meanwhile, a company of Yorkist longbowmen have gained the town proper, and prepare to loose onto the Lancastrians’ flank.

They are quickly attacked by the Lancastrians’ reserve of billmen though, and the Yorkist men-at-arms have to swing left to assist them.

‘But wait!’ Think the Yorkists. ‘What is that handy alleyway?'

They burst through it and onto the high street amongst the surviving defenders.

Meanwhile, as they approach the church, the three Lancastrian knights spot the Yorkist commander, all alone in the churchyard. They hesitate... To claim sanctuary or to try to kill the enemy commander?

Too late! The Yorkist commander spurs his charger towards the sudden threat, and at the same time, his mounted knights charge in to ride down the enemy… A narrow escape!

The high street is now overrun, and the fighting breaks up into small knots of desperately hacking, struggling men…

Finally the Yorkists encircle the Lancastrian commander, trapped between a pair of buildings…

With no escape possible, the better part of his army killed or fled, and the Yorkists now with a major advantage in numbers, the Lancastrian commander decides not to fight to the death and yields, criying ransom for himself and his household knights. The Yorkists accept this surrender and  the relieved noblemen on both sides live to fight another day.  Battle (and game) over.

I would say the whole encounter felt quite plausible and true to the period – but I’ll leave it to Silent Invader to contribute the conclusions to be drawn, in due course, 

Premiere League, exactly what the LAF is all about, sumptuous eye candy in every department; wonderful terrain, stunning buildings, beautifully painted figures and a proper scenario.  ;D

Not as good as the other game in the room on the day, but you can't have everything. ;) :D

Not a bad looking game I suppose.  ;)

Yes, I agree with Malamute, this is what LAF is all about, lots of eye-candy en masse. Well done guys!

A proper feast for the eyes.

And probably played out with a much more mature attitude compared to the idiots at the other end of the room where the proper game was being played.

Eye candy, pure eye candy...  :-*

It's a rare treat when an AAR is as exciting and engaging as this. I like your "eye witness" style of reporting.
The three men seeking sanctuary was especially great, it really reinforced the idea that these were actual people fighting, instead of just a sterile simulation. Was that dictated by the rules or player decision? Either way, a great touch, and a sign of enlightened gaming.  :)

Thanks for the photos and the write up Richard.  It was a rewarding game (in as much as being slaughtered can be rewarding!).

I think all I'd add is that the archers really came into play.  I had less to start with albeit the advantage of a wall.  What really cost me was that I split my archers into three groups (left and right of my main battle plus the party that went out on a limb to the barricade). I'd have been better splitting at two as limited activations per turn meant that I just couldn't match Richard's fall of arrows......... :o

The three men seeking sanctuary was especially great, it really reinforced the idea that these were actual people fighting, instead of just a sterile simulation. Was that dictated by the rules or player decision? Either way, a great touch, and a sign of enlightened gaming.  :)

The rules - which are quite short at only two pages of A4 - are geared for narrative-play which reflects that I guess both Captain Blood and me are interested in unfolding a story to which we do not yet know the answer. As much as is possible we like to get inside the 'heads' of the men rather than play for points (though winning would also be nice.....)

Having just about cut their way through the mercs, my three MAA were cut off from their own side and the church - sitting aside its hillock and so towering above the hedgerows -  looked the best of a whole lot of worse options.  They couldn't have seen the enemy commander in front of it, so entering the graveyard and finding him there must have been a tad of a surprise.  :D

Cheers, Steve

No, but Bullshott asked for a naked lady with his burger and chips at lunch - unfortunately the Naked Lady was the last of the barrel and a bit cloudy, so he made do with Sundowner.

I'm still in awe at your genius, did you hire a function room or were you contending with the regulars? In which case did you have a stick to fend off any stinky Carol or wandering Bob?

A good way to get interest in the hobby.

Excellent photography, the poses look real and the angles are well thought out, the game looks very natural, complimented by your skill for a good narrative and very nicely presented figures of course

Absolutely brilliant in every way! To see so many quality miniatures, on such a beautiful table, all involved in such a believable tale is awe inspiring. Congrats gents, in particular Captain Blood for that eye candy. My eye keeps getting drawn to those "black armored gents", who really stand out to me amongst that sea of beauty. The Oscar goes to...

The games were held in my local boozers function room...it was closed off to the public. I think the cost of the room hire was about £100?

The pub of course has advantages of ale in close proximity and food on demand.

We will be using the same venue for this years BLAM

I also like to play York as I am part Yorkshire (e by gum) but we rolled for who defended and who attacked and I got the town, which to be honest was probably the best option for my mix of forces.

Not as good as the other game in the room on the day, but you can't have everything. ;) :D

Well our table was certainly only a quarter the size of yours. But maybe a little more colourful?  ;)

Inspiration for the hobby! Great seeing all those beautiful minis showcased in action on fantastic terrain.

Thanks  :)

I do have to say though - without false modesty - that the terrain is not all that fantastic really.
I am saddened by the dismal Subbuteo cloths and wonky cardboard roads beloved of so many wargamers.
The 'terrain' in these pictures is just flat MDF squares covered with a bit of sand-and-PVA mix, painted, drybrushed, and flocked. Yes, one or two have bits of road surface added, but it's not exactly advanced modelling.
And carting a few squares of MDF around is really not much harder than bringing a subbuteo cloth. But makes a massive difference to the look of any game. Minimal effort - great effect.
The rest of the terrain is just commercially available resin buildings, hedges, walls and so on. A liberal sprinkling of lichen to help tie it together, plus a few of Silent Invader's rather nice homemade trees.

In short, it looks a lot better than it really is.
And that's because it's on textured boards, not on a flipping cloth!
I wish more people would try it. It's honestly not that hard to achieve.

I'm still in awe at your genius, did you hire a function room or were you contending with the regulars?

We were in the pub's function room Stuart. The regulars were next door. But beer and very nice pub grub a few yards away, is a very definite bonus and highly conducive to a good day's wargaming fun with LAF chums. Perhaps think about joining us at BLAM in October (dates TBA) - it would be great to meet and play a game using some of your superb collection :)

True about the cloth, but at present even that is beyond my meager terrain collection of 2 tombs and a couple of brick walls!

This year is, hopefully, going to be spent trying to build up some terrain once I work out where the hell to store it... so any terrain setup is inspirational... it just helps that it's full of character and comes complete with an interesting battle report too ;)

You are too modest Richard by far.  :)

I understand about the bit of extra effort of terrain boards over a mat - but your and SI's game goes far beyond that.

Credit where credit is due - this is the type of game most of us dream of being part of.

Yes please, do let me know with a bit of notice and I'll see what I can do, Painterman may also be interested. Our figures aren't based the same but I'm sure we can work around it.

Make sure you have access to the BLAM internal message board . I think Malamute is the moderator. Notice of BLAM 2015 will be coming out at the beginning of Feb...

And good times were had by all! Wonderful stuff Richard, just grand. Colourful as always too.

If you don't mind, what texture stuff did you use to create your cobble roads? Looks a lot better than the usual vinyl mat with it's too-regular texture.

Thanks gents, for all the praise. It was good fun and an interesting game, as well as decorative ;)

If you don't mind, what texture stuff did you use to create your cobble roads? Looks a lot better than the usual vinyl mat with it's too-regular texture.

The cobblestone sheet for the roads is a kind of pattern-imprinted, light foamboard sheet about 2mm or 3mm thick. Can't remember where I got it from now - it was a few years ago. You used to be able to get it in various textures and colours for walls and paving. I'm sure someone still makes and sells it, but not sure who...

If you enjoyed this battle report and medieval photo-fest, may I refer you to a few of our earlier encounters in this vein...
(If nothing else, you can see how much better pictures I got with my old cheap and cheerful Canon Powershot point-and-shoot, as opposed to my fancy-schmanzy new DSLR...  ::))

Richard,

I entirely agree with you re: not playing on a green cloth and your game, with it's, if you don't mind me saying so, illustrates what's possible with even basic Mdf terain and a little sand etc.

Oh dear. Sorry about that. They'll come back eventually. Sadly, it's wait, or pay Photobucket a stupid amount of money for 'extra bandwidth' - pretty sure people looking here at pictures hosted on Photobucket doesn't actually involve use of 'bandwidth', but it's not cheap to add more of it...

I´ll wait for them to reappear..the comments  posted ( and seeing your previous work) have made me very interested..I´m sure it´ll be worth the wait

That´s what I meant with the  "blackmail"  message.  Years back I used Boto phucket. I´d upload one or two pics, nothing that would take up tons of "Bandwidth"..like a Pic of a White cat in a snow storm and within no time got the  "ooh!! you are a popular laddie, why not up-grade from limitless Uploads by paying for more bandwidth so you can have some more limitless  uploads until it gets used up by the fact  that the whole Point of uploading  them is  actually limited by the bandwith so it´s not really unlimited"

I transferred all my pics, uploaded up tons of pics of happy pigs, garden gnomes and the like..then left.  :D
If you don´t want to leave P B ..You can get around the "blocking"..... :D :D
