Title: Build Something Contest 2015 *Competition is now complete, thank you*
Post by: OSHIROmodels on January 28, 2015, 08:15:55 AM
the competition has ended, roll on next year

Welcome LAFers to the Build Something Contest 2015!

As with other build contests this years will be based on a theme and the theme will be Fire and Ice... There will also be a time limit and the voting will be done on a voting/poll basis with knockout rounds similar to the LPL but as a simpler version.

General Rules -

One entry per member (no joint contributions).

30 Entries max, first come first served.

A child board will be set up in the Workbench section and all build threads must be started in this child board. There will also be a dedicated Gallery set up just for the contest for hosting purposes so please post your photos there and then of course post them in your build thread, any questions regarding this just let me or Prof Witcheimer know.

The official start date is 09:00 GMT Sun 1st Feb and all applicants must notify me on this thread by 20:00 GMT Sat 31st Jan. They will then be listed in this post below. The list of entrants will be in alphabetical order (no favouritism). Please let me know if your username is wrong.

If we don't reach 30 Entries, I will make up the numbers to keep it even for the voting so who ever gets in the same poll as myself gets a free win (all pairings/groupings will be random).

I will not be entering as a 'legal' participant, just to either make up the numbers or for fun (probably for fun anyway as I know what I'm doing already).

Finished entries must be submitted no later than midnight Sat 14th Mar whence they will be randomly paired/grouped and the voting polls will open the following Friday with a week between each round.

The build threads of the entrants should include as many progress shots as possible, including sketches but no photos of the finished entry should be posted on the thread. Painting in progress is allowed up to a point of say 50-75% complete, if you are unsure then please ask.

Final entries must consist of either one photo or a photo montage of the finished piece. No photo manipulation will be allowed apart from the usual cropping, white balance, contrast as long as they are within reason. Again, if you are unsure then please ask.

Photo size should be 800x800 pixles and sent as a jpeg to buildsomething@lead-adventure.de

Although winners will be voted by the population of the LAF, if there is any sense of foul play the judges decision is final although we would hope that it won't be necessary given the friendly nature of the LAF :-)

Theme Rules -

The entry must include something that ties in with the theme. Anything goes whether it be a fire engine, a snowman, a burnt out hut in the snow, a log fire in a dungeon room, a wizard casting an ice spell etc. If you have any questions either ask them here, to the above buildsomething email or via pm but Please label your email and pm Build Something 2015 otherwise it might not get answered.

Minimum base size is 50mm x 50mm or 50mm diameter etc, there is no upper limit. If in doubt, ask.

There is no minimum or maximum limit of figures on the entry but please remember that this is a Build something contest and not a figure painting contest...

Any period or setting is allowed as long as it fits with the theme including sci-fi or fantasy etc.

The entry can either be solely a diorama/vignette piece or it can be for gaming with, the choice is yours.

The idea is to build something so the vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, only 10-20% can be commercially bought items or figures. The rest must be hand made.

Conversion of commercially bought items is allowed also. Eg, a head swap on a single figure would not be suitable but repositioning and sculpting new body parts would be. Another example would be the GW plastic buildings; adding a couple of extra parts to the kits would not be in but having some of the extra parts from the sprue on an entirly new building would be fine. Again, if in doubt, please ask.

It's probably not possible to cover all the eventualities so please use your common sense and use fair play where you can.

Good luck and happy building   :)

Do I understand correctly that it can be FIRE or ICE or BOTH?  o_o

And what if I decided to recreate the cover art of the named Bakhshi/Frazetta movie? Would that be acceptable (not that I plan to do it of course)?

Both of those a fine as long as the vast majority is scratchbuilt  :)

Had the same thought as Michi... So fire only is acceptable?

I need to sort out a large amount of scifi scenery so there's no reason why I shouldn't try to do something related to this to join in the fun. =)

Could I possibly have a ruling please?  I have an idea but I don't know if it's too tenuous?  I want to build something that I will use, otherwise it's time best spent on what I'd planned to do.

Is a meat cold storage facility too far removed from the ice theme? I was going to have it with exaggerated ice effects to highlight the cold. It will be a nice bit of terrain for zombie,  modern and Pulp gaming.

If it's too far removed then I'll come up with something else.

Cheers

Yes, it's that nice Mr Bibbly in charge,  you know the one, he does those lovely scratchbuild models.  :D

I wasn't sure if it was icey enough. My original idea was an exploding Acw cannon, so that's my fallback

I'm in! Don't have an idea just yet, but I'm well overdue to "get back in the game" in terms of physical productivity, so this'll give me a good external excuse reason.

*Edit*- Okay now I have too many ideas. Would it be weird/unlawful if I started my thread with a poll?

That's sounds good...when I sat down to think about this I actually came up with a very short list. Having abandoned my snowy wastes project and not wishing to go back I have focussed on 'Fire'.

Assuming my project gets the green light from James its going to be quite big (about 1 metre long and quite tall), the real issue will be building it in a very short period of time. I then of course have to find somewhere to store it...

Can you guess what it might be??

You mean you are actually planning this...

I never plan...apart from every measurement is divisible by three that's the trick.

Gents, due to various personal issues I've changed the deadline to Saturday 14th March as I won't be able to sort out entries until then.

If you finish before then, please still send your entry photos to the proper email address as provided in the original post.

cheers

Extra time is great. I thought I was just going to have to do a rush job on the cave. Looks like I'll have to do a better job.
It's also good to have an extra payday between the initial finish and the new finish  lol

Finished entries must be submitted no later than midnight Sat 14th Mar whence they will be randomly paired/grouped and the voting polls will open the following Friday with a week between each round.

Wait a minute! Does this mean I have a whole Saturday to finish my stuf?? :o :o
Or I'm too tired to understand the deadline...

That's it chaps, the competition is now closed.

All the finalists will be complied today and with luck, the voting will begin tomorrow  :)

I might not have commented but I have been watching and there are some wonderful creations out there  :D

Well done to all that finished and commiserations to those who couldn't quite make it. Don't let the competition deadline spoil your fun though, do carry on and finish your builds for all to see.

Let me know via pm and I will move your build thread into the workbench so you can finish them there  :)

I still have a certain Wizards tower that need finishing in the workbench somewhere  ;)

Will there be any 'badgers' to add to our Sig like the painting threads? :D

Enjoy your little furry fans James. :D
