Title: Ford's Canyon - The James Gang Train Robbers- NEW UPDATE 6-9-15!
Post by: ivor13 on January 29, 2015, 05:02:26 PM
Hey guys,
Here is a link to my blog on the Dead Man's Hand town I'm currently working on. A town with no name as of yet, but I've got a few ideas!

Thanks for looking!
Ivor

I like all the little additions to make it more lived in.
I also like the partially built building in the background of some photos, I think I will steal that idea and add some partial cladding to my 4ground building.

Thanks guys! Burt, I'm going to put up the under construction building soon, you'll get a much better look at it then. It's turned into one of my favorite buildings! :)

Excellent work. How did you make the street or if purchased who makes them?

Thanks a lot, appreciate it! The streets I purchased at Historicon last July. They are made by Battlefield Terrain Concepts. I had seen them the year prior, but they are kind of expensive. They are like a latex rubber and they are really made to be used as individual roads. For my board I just put three next to each other to get a bigger "street", but I'd need a lot more to cover the whole town, and that's way more money than I want to spend! I'm going to try to make my own streets here in the next couple of weeks with a product I found called Liquitex Flexible Modeling Paste.

Hopefully this will work out and we can have a much cheaper alternative! I'll share the process on the blog when I start (Unless it turns into a disaster, to which we both forget I ever had the idea and will never speak of it ever again!).

Ha! Thanks Doug! My wife rides horses professionally here in the states, and her competition horses name is "Captain Fantastic". If I pay the bills, I get to name them! The next she gets has already been decided will be named "Anfield"

Thanks a lot!

Hmmm... that's a tough one. The Bank easily made it to the top of my least favorite to build! I'm pleased with the end result, but getting there...  >:(

I really like the corner buildings, especially the Undertakers. I think I've bought 3 of those so far and mashed them around, repainted and whatnot to make different businesses, ironically not one being an undertaker! That one I think you can change the most around with the interiors and porch overhangs. So I'd put the Undertaker as my favorite kit - but not as an undertaker!

I am going to start on the Sassy Gal this week hopefully, but I have this feeling it's just going to be so much bigger than everything else on the table that it is going to look out of place. I just need to stop worrying about it and just get it built!

Yeah, the Sassy Girl is neat but I think I'll be passing on it simply because it's soooo big.  It would be fun to play an entire game inside the saloon though... lol

Now that I've finally figured out how to add images, I thought I'd show a quick photo of my 4Ground stagecoach. I know some of the other guys have been talking about it and wasn't sure if it's bad form to be throwing a photo of your work on someone else's thread, so I figured I'd just do this instead.

Something pretty easy to improve the look of the stage is Woodland Scenics dry transfers. They are awful to work with and the lettering is difficult to get on straight, especially in such a confined area, but it's the Old West and it's not supposed to be perfect - at least that's what I keep telling myself! :D

Ha! They're not mine! They are made by Battlefield Terrain Concepts. I got them at Historicon last year, really expensive imho, that's why I only got one set. I'm in the process of making my own roads on MDF board and a product called Liquitex flexible modeling paste. I think it will end up working well, I've done one test board so far,  just got to get the rest of the boards cut to get  going.

Or something else related to your username instead.
There are a few things that will be added to the Creek over time, and these things will, of course, need to fit in with the original themes.

^Yep.  It works a treat.  Particularly with thick paints like the Army Painter spray/primers.  It goes on in one coat.  I've done a couple the same way.  Also the DMH kits (of similar size) have some mix/match capability, so you can really build quite a few variations.

I think it definitely improves the overall look though, so I'm sure I'll continue to do it in the future.

I somehow missed this one, but you have my attention now Ivor.

It definitely was the highlight of this game! A brilliant move by my friend and hopefully it will up the ante in all our future games!

It is amazing how the right sign can really make a building more visually appealing! To be honest, I think maybe there are still probably 4 or 5 existing buildings that I want to CHANGE their signs!? Always a work in progress.  lol

Yeah, my little western world has a liking of printed product too. Wanted posters are stuck on every corner, and adverts are stuck up in the back lanes, and newspapers litter the floor. You'd think the council would install recycling bins ;)

My printer is firmly in the 1 colour camp, he would be rather envious of all your neon coloured posters  ;D They really are fetching and add life/history to the town. 8)

Nothing wrong with your posters etc, Matt.
I will probably go along the same route.
Whilst Ivor's town looks wonderful with all those splashes of colour, I think plainer signs would work best in mine too.

Thanks Paul, I was just trying to say I liked Igor's posters too - perhaps I should have posted after my coffee lol

I'd imagine that late 1800's printing presses/jobs were mostly 1 colour affairs, with the splashes of colour in town being the beautifully painted store signs/windows + fabric banners and bunting.

It's quite feasible to do both colour & BlackWhite in a "glitzy" prosperous OW town, but early border/mining towns may be a bit rougher, and more simple affairs.

[tangent]
Personally I have been trying to do BW advertising on my rustic OW buildings, and faded colour adverts on my PostApoc. But both do have some kind of paper litter - I think it's working so far to tie them together.  ;D

Cheers

Haha awesome! Great conversions :-* :-*

They really make me giggle sorry;
Attending Halloween
a set of invisible men
Spooky men haunting a local place needing to be unmasked by a gang of youths
A bunch of scary scarecrows

I think you could use those characters in heaps of genres. Nicely done.

Cheers
Matt

lol Thanks guys! I'd love to think that I have the skills like most do here to convert figures (my list of movie and cartoon characters would be enormous :D), but alas the only skills taken to bring these figures to the board consisted of hitting the "add to basket" button :)

They are from Lon at Brigade Games
