Looking good so far. That's your best work to date.
:D
(Sorry Giles, cheap shot, I know... Couldn't resist ;))
-
Cheap shots allowed - its Friday afternoon
-
I knew it iced over rock cliff faces in Egypt!!!! ;D
Snitchy sends.
-
Seeing that others have jumped the starting gun ...I thought official start was tomorrow I shall declare my build...
It will be approximately 50cm wide and 50cm high. The plan is that this will sit on top of my rocky escarpments...so yes more cork involved
-
Looking forward to this. I have always wanted a volcano for my jungle table, so I will be taking notes :D

Materials bought yesterday...(receipts available to check if required) - construction starts this morning :D
Ill be posting updates here and on my blog.
Materials bought
MDF base - 50cm square cut for me at B&Q
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v5_zps9ihydllh.jpg)
Lots of glue...
Jablite for basic internal construction
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v4_zpsniyjbrkr.jpg)
Cork Bark - two 60cm tubes
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v1_zps8wdifh67.jpg)
Proof that Cork Bark found in the right place is not expensive...this was from my local garden centre (their reptile area)
Progress build later tonight :D
-
The two garden centres near me that have reptile sections charge way more than that! Thankfully I bought 10kg of it online a little while back that has done me well :)
-
:o :o :o £8.99 for an entire cork bark tube is astonishingly cheap.
Pick me up a couple next time you're passing, would you Giles? :)

Going back today for more so OK

09.00hrs and the project is a go !!
First up fix an old Champagne box to base board. This has had one end chopped off and stands 36cm tall. The box will create a sturdy centre for the volcano plus creates an inside for something I have planned later on.
Cut roughly to 36cm high
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v7_zpstty1jmob.jpg)
Glued and screwed to baseboard.
Step two glue in skewers around the base to hold the polystyrene at the heart of the volcano.
Simple bbq skewers hold the polystyrene in place
As you can see in the following pictures as the volcano takes shape I have not been particularly careful in measuring pieces. Afterall you are not going to see this in the final pictures.
So my final picture of the day...a polystyrene clad box...
If I can brave the cold outside I might spend another hour in the shed whilst the missus watches Mr Selfridge...

Jesus Giles, you've got a month yet lol
cheers

I haven't - I estimate I have five days...my diary is manic in Feb...
-
Wow, that's quick. :o
And I don't even have a sketch of what I want to build...
-
I have visions of one of those US school projects with real life lava being emitted! :D
-
Blimey! This is progressing fast!
-
That built up fast! :o
Reminds me bit of Minecraft at this stage before the cork cladding. :D
-
Looking good!!
Will you be carving a skull face into one side of the volcano to have a pulp evil lair or pirate lair as well????!!!!! :D go on....
Cheers
Matt.
-
Make one section/side replacable?
Looking good!!

-
Nice start. I can't wait to see how it goes. I think this contest is really going to help me get my own terrain making skills a lot better by looking at others stuff.
-
:o
Fantastic stuff.
-
Going back today for more so OK
Make that two if its not too late! ;)
-
Seriously impressed with the speed you are hitting this at.
Very impressed.
Make that two if its not too late! ;)
Make that three if you can, please, Giles.
Mama's paying.

I went down to the garden centre again yesterday and cleared their stock of 60cm tubes - sadly I only managed to get what I need and the two promised for Capt Blood. Ill go by again in a couple of weeks and see what I can find... ;)

Looking good ... I can't wait to see how it turns out.
"The tension is unbearable ... I hope it'll last"

Hi Folks
Managed to slap a coat of black paint on the volcano last night...lesson learned from desert escarpments painting behind the cork cladding is a nightmare. better to paint the base first.
Not too sure how much is going to get done today as the weather seems to have scuppered any chance of getting into the shed...its just too cold for protracted work outside and there is no way Mrs Shed will let me cut cork back inside..
Picture taken at 7am this morning...
cheers
-
Well, that's the ice part completed..... :o
-
very good start indeed

That's no winter, thus no excuse for not working ;)

Sell them and buy more wargaming stuff!
:D ;)
-
Main issue I see is working outside in the "cold" your not moving quickly enough to generate sufficient body-heat to keep warm and get the other paid work done.
May I suggest re-tasking the lady wife to encourage you to "move faster" so that you get it done, likely melting the snow in the process?
Possibly give her a whip to do the encouraging?
She can take Whip shots to post along with your WIP shots.....?
:D
We wanna see your skills and erupting volcano project!
I know you have all month but still - moRe pls.
I would suggest getting cheaper kids but there is no such thing....
-
Sell them and buy more wargaming stuff!
:D ;)
Shall I add them to the bazaar of obscurities ??
-
help has now been drafted in to work on the volcano...
-
I have a devil helper just like that.
Well perhaps a bit rounder...
Not sure its a good idea - almost as expensive as kids.
-
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/DSC_1398_zpsrwmjii3b.jpg)
At least he found the wiring problem with your light source!
Snitchy sends.
-
Managed to finish work early and so braving the weather outside I started cladding the volcano..
The bark is being held with strong adhesive and bbq skewers - these will get trimmed prior to painting...
I am going to try and finish the cladding by the end of the week...
-
:o
I don't even dare to wonder, how much that amount of cork would cost around here.
Looks really good.
-
It's looking great Giles. It's a cracking old pace you've set.
-
I can't believe how fast you're progressing. I've got a couple of these hairy helpers myself, but mine are useless ...
-
:o
-
You're missing one of the twin peaks of Kilimanjaro!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46btEgKmCTo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46btEgKmCTo)
lol
Very nice job so far. How many more cork logs do you have to add?
Snitchy sends.
-
Wow. I may as well give up now!
-
more cork went on last night !!
that's two sides done...so I wonder what's going to happen on the sides that have not been clad yet?.
more soon
-
Just stop! We all need a chance to catch up!
Looking great. Cork is such an amazing product.
-
I agree. This has got to be the most advanced build in the competition.
I'll have to get my skates on.
Tony
-
Believe it or not I am actually behind on what I need to achieve... ;)
-
Silly you! lol
-
that's two sides done...so I wonder what's going to happen on the sides that have not been clad yet?.
That sounds like a story line from Play School. Through the round window you can see a Volcano :D :D
Seriously though great work Giles. Looking forward to seeing this progress.
-
How are you going to make it smoke?
Dry ice and water?
-
....With a packet of twenty and a lighter ;D
Seriously I haven't given this much thought yet...open to ideas
-

You will make a glacier to fool us all at the end! Dam you are a shifty one!!!!! lol
Snitchy sends.
-
Impressive! Love your cat too :)
-
Looking good, you have me quite curious about what's going on those remaining sides... ???
-
My guess is lava flows :)
-

And my guess is Eric's likeness carved in stone :D

Left bare to provide the cat with a scratching post.
Cat will obviously ignore it and sharpen its claws on the wrong side.
-
Hi guys...well I have managed to finish the cladding !!
BUT I now have a problem with photobucket - first time in three years - all my new photos are coming out with a very strong red hue...basically you cant see anything but shadow. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon and you can see the progress >:(
Off to watch the rugby - hope the red hue is not an ominous sign... ???
-
all my new photos are coming out with a very strong red hue...basically you cant see anything but shadow.
This sounds exactly like watching an erupting volcano from close. Thanks to Photobucket, you'll be able to save on LEDs and smoke emitters for your build.
-
well the best side won... :D :D :D :D :D
-
I didn't realise Scotland were playing last night!! ;) :D
-
- great service from Photobucket !
As I was saying the cladding to the volcano was finished on Thursday night
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v23_zps9estl5sj.jpg)
Followed by a quick 30 minutes in the shed mixing filler (with a dash of black acrylic paint) for a good coat over the bare area on my mountain.
I have left a space...but I wonder what for...

A skull evil lair entrance!!! :D :D :D
-

Seriously I haven't given this much thought yet...open to ideas
How about just teasing out some cotton wool.....
...fair enough, this is tiny in comparison, but the idea should work the same.
;)
-
Looks fab already 8)
Curious to see how you will do the lava flow… colored silicone or water effects?
Oh, and that cotton could work nicely, for fire part just add one of those flickering fire type of electric candles?
-

Sorry to disappoint but no lava flow, for the purposes of this build it will have a lava pool in the crater but no eruption.
I need to make sure this becomes a playable piece post build...
hopefully more tomorrow...been freezing in Brighton all day... :)
-
I would suggest you looking up where to get a hold of some dry ice still. :D
-
no dry ice... :D
smoke and flames definitely
-
Hi folks only a small amount of progress today as I am still waiting on the filler to dry...
spent my time working on my tramp steamer (posted update of this on workbench & blog) and figuring out how I am going to deliver the pyrotechnics on this build.
I can however report that this is the heaviest build I have ever tackled - at the moment this monstrosity is weighing in at nearly 25lbs !!
More to come later in the week...
-
Wow. That's heavy! Looking forward to progress pics. :)
-
No updates for a while. Has it tipped over pinning its creator to the ground?
-
Nope back in the groove...
Started on the summit this morning...
a quick test on lighting option - abandoned
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v30_zpslimbdn0q.jpg)
then of course had to filler it in...
more filling required..
add temple of fire entrance..
complete surround...
more soon..
-
I like the temple at the bottom.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll be doing the lava and lighting; at least you won't have a problem due to lack of space; you could cram in 1,000 LEDs in this crater!
-
Mount Doom is coming along nicely.
8)
-
Will there be any friendly gorons welcoming human children dressed in green playing a clay ocarina?
I like the fire temple :-* :-* :-*
Cheers
Matt.

Hi Guys
Progress has been very slow...but I did manage to get the base ground work done and give it a first coat.
The Volcano is being painted to fit in with my desert landscape boards.
Having trialled lava issuing from the crater using expandable foam (did not work) I am now going to work on version 2 of the crater idea. This will almost certainly involve a pool of lava in the crater lit from below.
As a result I had to cut a whole in the bottom of the base for the light fitting.
Thanks to Jim I have an extra week to finish this build, and with a trip to Hamburg this weekend to visit Tactica to squeeze in, there will be no more progress updates for at least a few days..
-
Looking good and enjoy your trip to Hamburg.
Tony
-
This thing is big!
-
At over 11 kilograms it's heavy too!
-
At over 11 kilograms it's heavy too!
:o
I hope the shed has concrete foundations! :D
-
Amazing, I do love this one.
-
Must see how this ends! 8)
-
A bit more progress...I think I mentioned I cut a hole in the bottom of the volcano in my last post...
here it is (lousy photo but you can see my little helper peering in from the other side
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v39_zpsilqj0bkl.jpg)
well one of the reasons to cut a hole was so I could get the base of the crater in place..a clear sheet of transparent plastic (can you guess where I am going with this?
With the plastic glued into place I liberally covered it in bathroom mastic - it says on the tube it will dry clear but I am not so sure. The mastic was teased into irregular waves.
Its now going to take about three days to dry...
-
I am starting to feel more and more ashamed of my tiny entry.
-
well one of the reasons to cut a hole was so I could get the base of the crater in place..a clear sheet of transparent plastic (can you guess where I am going with this?
Flickering LEDs beneath it?
-
A little bit more progress today - with the mastic dry I was able to apply the first two coats of paint on the lava and test the lighting
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v43_zpsjpe5s7pa.jpg)
and here's the effect with light shown through from the bottom.
This will flicker... :D
Its at this point I am probably going to have to stop showing progress - I still need to fish the lava (if this one works as well as my test I'll be very happy), I need to airbrush paint the whole structure, paint the groundwork etc
In addition I want to add some form of stairway up the side of the Volcano - afterall it is a place of worship for the great god Kong
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v46_zpscv05llwk.jpg)
My Kong is a Schleich model gorilla (perhaps a little small) but a great model
Here he is against an unpainted 28mm figure
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Volcano/v47_zpshjgi8w8o.jpg)
Here's to finishing this monstrous terrain piece off...
-
Fantastic! :-*

Ginormous! o_o
The crater seems to work quite well Eric, and airbrushing the cork would be much quicker than brush!!
Good luck
Matt.
-
I am starting to feel more and more ashamed of my tiny entry.
You remind me of a girl I once knew... ;)
That pot of bubbling lava looks very effective Giles. Looking forward to seeing this in it's finished state... Not long now! ;)
-
You remind me of a girl I once knew... ;)
That is so wrong ;)
-
Just a quick update...I started painting the volcano today !!
Sadly no photos...cos I am not allowed
but here are some of my cats to keep you all amused

And they're doing their job :o :-* 8)

Saw this today Giles and thought of you :)

That's so
cool I mean hot...
-
just praying for dry weather so I can get this photo outside...
24 hours to go
-
Photo is in...now onto the real contest...
-
Having seen it in the flesh, I can testify that it's bloody massive.
Good luck Giles :)
