Seeing that others have jumped the starting gun ...I thought official start was tomorrow I shall declare my build...

It will be approximately 50cm wide and 50cm high. The plan is that this will sit on top of my rocky escarpments...so yes more cork involved

Materials bought yesterday...(receipts available to check if required) - construction starts this morning :D

Ill be posting updates here and on my blog.

Materials bought

MDF base  - 50cm square cut for me at B&Q

Lots of glue...

Jablite for basic internal construction

Cork Bark - two 60cm tubes

Proof that Cork Bark found in the right place is not expensive...this was from my local garden centre (their reptile area)

Progress build later tonight :D

The two garden centres near me that have reptile sections charge way more than that! Thankfully I bought 10kg of it online a little while back that has done me well :)

:o :o :o £8.99 for an entire cork bark tube is astonishingly cheap.

Pick me up a couple next time you're passing, would you Giles? :)

09.00hrs and the project is a go !!

First up fix an old Champagne box to base board. This has had one end chopped off and stands 36cm tall. The box will create a sturdy centre for the volcano plus creates an inside for something I have planned later on.

Cut roughly to 36cm high

Glued and screwed to baseboard.

Step two glue in skewers around the base to hold the polystyrene at the heart of the volcano.

Simple bbq skewers hold the polystyrene in place

As you can see in the following pictures as the volcano takes shape I have not been particularly careful in measuring pieces. Afterall you are not going to see this in the final pictures.

So my final picture of the day...a polystyrene clad box...

If I can brave the cold outside I might spend another hour in the shed whilst the missus watches Mr Selfridge...

I went down to the garden centre again yesterday and cleared their stock of 60cm tubes - sadly I only managed to get what I need and the two promised for Capt Blood. Ill go by again in a couple of weeks and see what I can find... ;)

Hi Folks

Managed to slap a coat of black paint on the volcano last night...lesson learned from desert escarpments painting behind the cork cladding is a nightmare. better to paint the base first.

Not too sure how much is going to get done today as the weather seems to have scuppered any chance of getting into the shed...its just too cold for protracted work outside and there is no way Mrs Shed will let me cut cork back inside..

Picture taken at 7am this morning...

cheers

Main issue I see is working outside in the "cold" your not moving quickly enough to generate sufficient body-heat to keep warm and get the other paid work done.

May I suggest re-tasking the lady wife to encourage you to "move faster" so that you get it done, likely melting the snow in the process?

Possibly give her a whip to do the encouraging?

She can take Whip shots to post along with your WIP shots.....?

 :D

We wanna see your skills and erupting volcano project!

I know you have all month but still - moRe pls.

I would suggest getting cheaper kids but there is no such thing....

Managed to finish work early and so braving the weather outside I started cladding the volcano..

The bark is being held with strong adhesive and bbq skewers - these will get trimmed prior to painting...

I am going to try and finish the cladding by the end of the week...

BUT I now have a problem with photobucket - first time in three years - all my new photos are coming out with a very strong red hue...basically you cant see anything but shadow. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon and you can see the progress  >:(

Off to watch the rugby - hope the red hue is not an ominous sign... ???

As I was saying the cladding to the volcano was finished on Thursday night

Followed by a quick 30 minutes in the shed mixing filler (with a dash of black acrylic paint) for a good coat over the bare area on my mountain.

Curious to see how you will do the lava flow… colored silicone or water effects?

Oh, and that cotton could work nicely, for fire part just add one of those flickering fire type of electric candles?

Sorry to disappoint but no lava flow, for the purposes of this build it will have a lava pool in the crater but no eruption.

I need to make sure this becomes a playable piece post build...

hopefully more tomorrow...been freezing in Brighton all day... :)

Hi folks only a small amount of progress today as I am still waiting on the filler to dry...

spent my time working on my tramp steamer (posted update of this on workbench & blog) and figuring out how I am going to deliver the pyrotechnics on this build.

I can however report that this is the heaviest build I have ever tackled - at the moment this monstrosity is weighing in at nearly 25lbs !!

More to come later in the week...

I like the temple at the bottom.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll be doing the lava and lighting; at least you won't have a problem due to lack of space; you could cram in 1,000 LEDs in this crater!

Mount Doom is coming along nicely.

Will there be any friendly gorons welcoming human children dressed in green playing a clay ocarina?

I like the fire temple :-* :-* :-*

Cheers
Matt.

Hi Guys

Progress has been very slow...but I did manage to get the base ground work done and give it a first coat.

The Volcano is being painted to fit in with my desert landscape boards.

Having trialled lava issuing from the crater using expandable foam (did not work) I am now going to work on version 2 of the crater idea. This will almost certainly involve a pool of lava in the crater lit from below.

As a result I had to cut a whole in the bottom of the base for the light fitting.

Thanks to Jim I have an extra week to finish this build, and with a trip to Hamburg this weekend to visit Tactica to squeeze in, there will be no more progress updates for at least a few days..

A bit more progress...I think I mentioned I cut a hole in the bottom of the volcano in my last post...

here it is (lousy photo but you can see my little helper peering in from the other side

well one of the reasons to cut a hole was so I could get the base of the crater in place..a clear sheet of transparent plastic (can you guess where I am going with this?

With the plastic glued into place I liberally covered it in bathroom mastic - it says on the tube it will dry clear but I am not so sure. The mastic was teased into irregular waves.

Its now going to take about three days to dry...

A little bit more progress today - with the mastic dry I was able to apply the first two coats of paint on the lava and test the lighting

and here's the effect with light shown through from the bottom.

This will flicker... :D

Its at this point I am probably going to have to stop showing progress - I still need to fish the lava (if this one works as well as my test I'll be very happy), I need to airbrush paint the whole structure, paint the groundwork etc

In addition I want to add some form of stairway up the side of the Volcano - afterall it is a place of worship for the great god Kong

My Kong is a Schleich model gorilla (perhaps a little small) but a great model

Here he is against an unpainted 28mm figure

Here's to finishing this monstrous terrain piece off...

Ginormous!  o_o

The crater seems to work quite well Eric, and airbrushing the cork would be much quicker than brush!!

Good luck
Matt.

I'd like to complain to the judges, clearly there's an attempt to use something akin to Hynotoad.
