Thought I'd share a WIP
These took a painfully long time but I'm quite pleased with them. Here I have attempted to bring these minis from the late 15c to early 16c by sculpting skirted coats typical of the period.
They will eventually be a mixed unit of French missile foot.
Any more ideas of what I could do to Tudorise these plastics?
Thanks
Stuart

Great work with the Green Stuff Stuart.
Have you ever toyed with the GW 'Empire' heads? They are a whisker too large for the Perry plastics - but not so that you'd notice unless you were really looking to pick holes.
Mason kindly sent me a few, and I've used some of them - they include quite a wide selection of Tudor-ish / landsknecht style flat hats, with and without adornment... For instance:

Not sure how easy these are to get hold of, but I guess an appeal for spares here on LAF might yield a few donations to further youur project :)

Brilliant.

Excellent 8)
cheers

Superb GS work, your effort has paid off handsomely.
-
Excelent work Stuart. :-* :-*
Love those conversions.
Like Captain Blood says if you need some empire heads from GW i dont mind to send some.
The ones i have are from the militia box if they are of any use. Just pm me if you want.

Failing boardmembers, bitzbox.co.uk might be a help

Thanks Captain for the cloth caps notion and Rumacara for the offer, i'm pressing on with the sculpting and modifying some of the plastics heads, this is addictive :D
-
I've got to say that these are really excellent conversions Stuart!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
The first mini on the right elucidates your technique nicely too which is always useful 8)
Darrell.

If only I had the patience. Lovely conversions. They will look the biz when finished

That painted model looks amazing, love the pose as well, great job.

Lovely work, nice natural poses, the clothing hangs just right and the painted sample is stunning.

Quite so. I love the way the brims bend around the faces. And the hats look like they've been crammed on tightly so they don't slip off in the heat of the action. Lovely as always.

Thanks Stuart- that's really nice of you do show us your technique.... no excuses for me not to have a go now!
Darrell.

No problem Darrell, give it a go and keep going, I learned a few tricks along the way and it felt like I got a little bit better with each one I generally had 3 on the go so you don't waste any green stuff.
The last chap (below) I'm particularly pleased with, he has a Wolf Hall look about him, I think I'll paint him in black.
-
Stuart, you are getting better with that green stuff.
Keep it coming.
Lovelly transformations.
-
Lovely stuff - there's an added depth to these I love.

Amazing stuff. I've been trying to put aside an hour a day to do some sort of sculpting/converting but time sometimes slips away.......
Darrell.
-
Yes, he's very 'Wolf Hall' Stuart. Lovely converting.

An update and request;
I've got my mitts on some Perry plastic Ansar as the bare heads are perfect for sculpting cloth caps, the bodies great as a starting point for the coat and I can sculpt the bear paw oxmuhle shoes. That and the mercenary and WOTR arms are a perfect fit.
I'm a happy bunny :D
Do you know of any other plastics with bare heads or almost bare bodies?
Cue giggles and chortles for my need for naked bodies !
Thanks again
Stuart

You don't happen to live near Durham do you? I'm more than happy to take lessons and I'm not kidding!!??

The first ACW Infantry sets for sure. There will almost certainly be others but I only bought the ACW sets to see what the quality was like- from then on, I just bought what I need.

Thanks Darrell, I shall check those out .
Would you believe my hometown is Bishop Auckland :o
Unfortunately I now live in South Wales :-I

Very nice work.
Conversions look cool, but the painted minis are beautiful !
-
Brilliant - those have made my Valentine's day - I love 'em!!!!
XXX
-
Project 2 is underway.
To add some variety to the unit here's the start of a figure in doublet and hose. The mini is the running torso in brigandine.
The sleeves will be difficult I think but going good so far, this was done in one stage so also quicker than the last lot to do.
-
Brilliant. :D Lovely putty work along with top drawer painting. What's not to like? :)
-
Stuart,
Do you use clayshapers for smoothing the putty out as well as metal tools?
Darrell.
-
wow beautifull!!
-
Absolutely stunning!
-
Darrell
This is the set I have though for about 90% of the work I use the tool shown below
Stuart
-
Nice sculpting of the codpiece!
-
Well it is Valentine's day :D
-
Fantastic work stuart, won't be long now before your sculpting whole minis!
-
Darrell

Stuart
I've got every one of those implements too :D.
I tend to use Procreate as i feel that it's not as tacky as GS. Clayshapers work better with the former I find. That's why I asked really, to find out if you used anything other then metal sculpting tools to get a smooth finish.
Darrell.
-
Yeah, that is very nice sculpting and painting. You should deservingly be proud.
-
Will be a pleasure to see your work in flesh. Great stuff.
-
Fantastic work! :-*
-
Really stunning! :o
Can't wait to see more of your work.
-
Hey Stuart, have you looked into TAG italian crossbowmen? They look very much like the ones you`re sculpting.
-
Yes indeed, they're a bit slender for my liking though at the rate i'm going it would save a lot of time !
-
Though the effort is worth it :)
-
Fantastic work Stuart!! I love him..... :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Is that one of Simon's 'Burgundian feathers' in his cap?
Darrell.
-
Cheers Darrell, no it's taken from one of the Swiss heads
-

Ah.... Still, marvelous sculpting!! :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Brilliant - that figure is a great 'feather in your cap' Stuart lol
Fantastic sculpting - you're quickly getting more proficient and confident - adding the points and undershirt showing through - wonderful touches!
You don't need to buy any more Perrys now do you? - just make your own figures!!
Cheers
Simon.
-
My, they're all a bit good, aren't they ? 8)
-
Though the effort is worth it :)
I would say so Stuart.

Just what I was thinking... :)
-
Yes the results are well worth it!! I personall find the TAG to mix pretty well with the Perrys, especially the crossbowmen and handgunners with their heavy clothing that makes them bulkier..
But again, there's nothing like sculpting them exactly to your taste!
-
I coloured him in :)
-
I really like what you have done.
Great conversions.
:D

Excellent Stuart - great face and headgear in particular.
-
Everything in this thread is friggin' top quality...damn.
-
Top drawer Stuart :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.
-
Stuart, it is amazing how both your conversions and painting fully capture the time period. You are "a Renaissance man" indeed.
-
Like oil painings from the era. :-*
-
Top notch, you acually use the same tool that I sculpt with, I think it's one of the best ones, great to see you becoming more and more confident!
-
Wunderbar !!
-
Possibly my best yet.
The body, arms and head are from the Perry plastic ansar tribesman box. The arm carrying a rifle was cut and swapped with an arquebus.
These are barefoot so easy to add the distinctive oxmuhle shoes. Some of the heads in the box are bareheaded so fairly easy to add hair and then a square cloth cap. 3 evenings of sculpting and drying for a nice early 1500's french arquebusier :)
-
Very nice converting.
-
Possibly my best yet.
Modest too lol
I jest.
You are getting dead good at this, and have every reason to be pleased with your handiwork Stuart :)
-
:-* :-* :-*
Keep it coming Stuart.
-
lol thanks Richard I'm very smug with him !
I still need to file the shoes a bit as they look a bit like my nan's slippers.
I bought one Ansar sprue on eBay and for heads and a few extra arms which work seamlessly with the other medieval sets they're worth it.
For sculpting conversions like this one there's 4 useable bodies I reckon. All in this running pose but running under fire from a martini rifle or a cloth yard arrow it still works.
-
lol thanks Richard I'm very smug with him !
You should be!! :-* :-* :-*
That is a real piece of sculpting Stuart!!

Ok Stuart Perry, you are the long lost brother of Michael and Alan. Be honest to us. Where have you been all the time? Or is it the Milli Vanilli-Effect? You do the stuff for them????
-
Stuart
Ansar tribesman to French 16th Century arquebusier in 3 shifts - now you're just showing off!
This really must stop now, or you'll be able to charge fees....
:)
-
Another one done, Now he's coloured in it seems there's an italian influence though as there are very few depictions of French infantry in the early 1500's my approach is to mix italian and tudor influences with a bit if german, I'm guessing that's a reasonable mix. I like him anyways, the main thing is he looks nothing like a Sudanese Ansar tribesman !
-
Stunning! T he paint-job accentuates the quality of the sculpting. I think my favorite part is the neckline of the shirt, actually. It's the kind of easily overlooked detail that doesn't stand out by itself but really makes a figure look the part.
-
Brilliant conversion :o and I love your painting style, looking at the group photo shots on your blog is like looking at a tapestry.
-
I actually prefer these to TAG's Valois French, which themselves are a fine set of figures, albeit too late for my tastes. If I didn't know, I would call BS if someone suggested these were made from the Perry Ansar figures.
I raise my bonnet to you sir! :)
-
Lovely job Stuart. Great work on the face, never mind everything else.
-
Just amazing work from start to finish! :-*
-
Once again, he actually looks like a figure in a period painting - even your painting style is period ! You own the 16th centuury !
-
Sublime result, both in conversion and painting.
-
Very well done indeed 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James

I completly missed this thread! You are a talented fella Stuart, you know how to push the putty and how to colour your scuplts. Bravo!
Jan

As always, very nice sculpts, and cool painting.
-
Lovely work :)

Consider my bonnet raised too. These are pretty much sculpts and not conversions as you have used the Ansar as dollies. I'm more than highly impressed! You've also given my the impetus to start doing an hour or two of pushing putty a day!
Darrell.

Inspiring work as always :)
