Title: Look sir, droids! or, some Star Wars that isn't Imperial Assault
Post by: Carpet General on February 08, 2015, 08:28:26 AM
Hi all,
while i ponder wether to buy Imperial Assault or not, I have been painting some of Hasbro's Star Wars Command figures. Bigger and cheaper, if you buy them in the right place, they will keep me going until I inevitably buy FFG's new game. They are a real mish-mash of scales but the figures are 'about' 54mm.

Those X-Wings might be useful for another popular Star Wars game?

Nice painting - looks right out of a graphic novel.

Those are pretty cool. I hope they make environments for them.

The figs themselves seem nice enough to paint as display pieces

Agreed, I'm not painting these with any rules or system in mind, quite liberating in fact. I've got a nice sandtrooper conversion underway currently, I'll post some images soon.

Really cool, I did look at these and wonder whether they would be useful for something. But hey even as display pieces they work well. What's the material like?

It's firmer than Reaper Bones but not as firm as New Airfix or Hat 54mm stuff.

For those in the US, ToysRUs has these on sale right now.  They have a set only available there.  It's 51 figures for $9.99.  All are figures, no wonky scaled vehicles.  The other sets all have vehicles.  I am using the figs for old school D6 WEG Role playing.

Good looking miniatures! Which set is the sandtrooper in? There are various available on the net, but I can't find that one?

OK its 'Desert Escape' and its...not easy to get hold of or as cheap in the UK compared to the others!

That sandtrooper conversion is really great.
Could also be an exiled trooper going on some bounty hunting  :D

Thanks, I was thinking more like a veteran of the Jedi temple battle.

My sandtroopers came from two different sets, Desert Escape and Sandtrooper Strike.

The box is pretty light.  If you're willing to pay cost + postage I might be persuaded too help a fellow gamer out.

Thanks for the info Carpet General :)
Sadly the ebay price hikers have started to buy up these sets (£22.00 for Desert Escape anyone!!) but if people do a bit of searching, they can still be had for a more usual 4.99 for the small figure sets.

The conversion is really nice. I love this guy's back story, as you told it on your blog. I think my favorite paint job of the four is the trooper with the black shoulder pad thing. The precise highlight on the ammo belt and limited colors so look right for Star Wars.

Very nice and gritty and good that they finally seem to have found the droid they were looking for.

It annoys me a bit that all the troopers apparently are lefthanded however. But that might just be me.

Really nice work with these figures!

For those interested in the 54mm figs and X-wing possibilities. The $100 dollar set is now $50 and has 4 xwings a Tie Advanced and 4 Tie fighters in addition to some vehicles, the 70+ figures including the original trilogy characters.

Interestingly, both this and the set that's $10 for 51 figs both have a note saying they are available for international shipping!

I don't do 54mm, but maybe my 4y.o. son needs his first minis...

Give Star Wars toys to your children, to play with!
What a ridiculous notion!

It is tempting, but I've still got all my old star wars (and Exo Squad, and GI Joe…) action figures in a box waiting for them.  I think I'll probably skip these figs and just get out the action figures in a year or two.
