Title: North Pole Project - 12 December - Santa's house and more - last(?) update
Post by: dadlamassu on February 13, 2015, 02:49:22 PM
Some 28mm figures for various games that my grandchildren and I will be playing later this year.  Ideas for additions to the armies are welcome.

Looking at these photos I see that my eyesight and painting skill seem to be departing and I am nowhere near as good as I used to be.   They are fine using the 1 metre rule.

Flags, standards and heraldry to follow.

The army of Santa Claus/Father Christmas will be themed around red and green (mainly)

The Christmas Game

The army of Jack Frost and the Frost Princess (I'll probably think up a better name later) will be in the cold colours of blues, white ad grey.

UBERCOOL STUFF! As some one who is drifting into Twisted faerie Tales myself, your creations have an appreciative audience in moi. They are all SPLENDID little pieces, but the Santa with bazooka, & Snow White are especially so. GREAT & INSPIRING WORK!

Imaginative and fun idea! I love the army themes. Maybe a snowmonster such as the Bumble from the Rudolph stop-motion shows?

Sound like the games will be a great time, looking forward to more,

I have painted the bazooka in the style of a chocolate Yule Log cake just for fun.

Very creative. This December I was working on a similar game I'm planning, Wadda Ya Know Eskimo. One thing that improved my presentation was consciously keeping greens and browns off the bases and terrain. I only used the whites, blues and grays like your goblin foes. It really made for an icy appearance on the table.

Another fun faction might be Cobblestone Inuit. My game includes a lot of polar bears and polar bear chariots. Huskies. Converted Arctic sleds. A Yeti or two. Winter Wolves... the old D&D plastics. My main building is an oversized igloo. I have a Reaper sled in 28mm with Sophie driving. I have yet to convert it, but it obviously could be Santa's war wagon. An idea I am considering is the Reaper Bones Cthulhu with a Santa cap breaking up through the ice. Frozen Cpt. America? (HeroClix cast in resin.) A Soviet periscope with Mulder and Sculley popping out? ...I have seen the figures, but not sure where.

Yes I've seen them but cannot find a supplier in UK.  The cost from USA is prohibitive.

Excellent ideas - the only reason they have green bases (just now) is that I've not decided on the final "battleground" yet - it may be white (a sheet over my table) or they may have to fight on my green table.

Painted these and so might fit them in

My son gave me some figures for Christmas 2013 and I decided to paint them up as a school party from St Intoxicato's School.  If anyone has a better name for the school I'm open to suggestions.

The school selected a group of girls and staff to go on a long cultural exchange.  "The longer the better," murmured Miss Terchance the spinster Head Mistress as she waved off the most troublesome staff and pupils.

The staff:
Bella Donna the Deputy Head Teacher
Dee Stalker the biology teacher
Carrie Oakey the singing teacher
Rhonda Blokkenbak the gym mistress
Linda Hand the helpful mini-bus driver

Some very small figures found in the bottom of a box have become Santa's tiny elves.  These little chaps are not of much fighting value but they are excellent scouts and couriers!  (Does anyone know who makes (made) them as I could do with a few more?)

A couple of characters - Zorter Notiunnize with his Yule Log Book of all the naughty and nice girls and boys and Puppy Furlife the dog handler.

Silly?  Moi?  Ok - I'll stop when I grow up.  But for now ...

The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Ugly Troll (fol-di-rol) - I know they are actually ram headed figures but they were the closest that the lead pile could offer.  They might get replaced by suitable goat headed figures later on.

A friend sent me a box of figures for the "Great North Pole War". They are tree decorations, cake toppers and the like.

The Santa Militia - All of the chaps who are "Santa's Helpers" in stores at Christmas undergo a training regime that includes a call up liability to defend the workshop in an emergency.  And here they are!
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6010.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6010.jpg.html)

The Santa Grenadiers. After a few years in the militia the very best are selected to join the Grenadiers.  "Company will Arm Presents .... ARM .... PRESENTS ... Prepare to throw ... At 30 yards .... THROW!"
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6009.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6009.jpg.html)

Not to be outdone Jack Frost has raised (rolled up?) his own Glacial Grenadiers selected from the most cold hearted of his followers.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6006.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6006.jpg.html)

Frigid Frosty and the Freezers.  Music plays a significant part in warfare and Jack Frost is understands this.  He has formed a band to combat the musical advantage of Santa's forces' carol singers.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6005.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF6005.jpg.html)

The Chilly Blocks are small snowmen who act as shields for other forces. (cup cake toppers the old Minifig is for size only)

Some reinforcements.

Jack Frost leads the forces against Santa Claus hoping to freeze the warm goodwill of the season.

The BOOK!  This book contains the lists of the naughty and nice children.  Jack Frost wants it so that he can recruit all the naughty children into his army with promises of looted presents from the toy factory.  He sent in a spy.  Unfortunately for Jack the spy was a naughty child (now a goblin) that did not go to school, did not do his home work and so cannot read.

On Santa's side the bakers are preparing for war their ovens are kept red hot.  Santa is looking for a field bakery so that casualties can be replaced.

Some reinforcements for both sides (but mostly the cold warriors!)

The North Wind doth blow
And we shall have snow
This spirit roars around the town blowing the chimney pots down.

Storm Giant tend to be reclusive, preferring to dwell along remote coastlines or on tropical islands in winter unless called by Santa Claus. They are quick to anger in the face of Jack Frost and the Ice Queen's assaults.

If you go down to the woods today
You're in for a big surprise
For every hero bear that ever there was
Is there together because today's the day
The teddy bears beat your brains out!

Some warrior teddies who are much tougher than they look.

Our club did a similar christmas themed wargame at Crisis in Antwerp in 2005:-

Great fun. Some of our terrain was edible and you had to eat your way through it.

Thanks - I found your game and it was among those that I liked and used it for inspiration.  I am now writing some simple rules for the game.

I love the idea of edible terrain!  Hmmmmmm - Gingerbread house, Pantone hills, Maybe mince pies (pun intended) as special agents?

These two links are the only ones still working from my collection of "Christmas Wars" bookmarks, way back when I planned to do such a project:

http://www.wargamessupplydump.co.uk/santa_claus_wars.htm
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=93153

Two Hour Wargames also had a free and funny mini-ruleset that was titled Christmas Wars IIRC. Sadly, it's no longer available.

Cherno - the Two Houir Wargames rules were a tie-in to the Wargames Supply Dump range. I have those rules.

However, I did a Google search and found they're probably going to be released again (but as an add-on to 'Chain Recation 3.0', not 'Chain Reaction 2.0'), as the file has already been uploaded to the Two Hour Wargames site:
http://site.twohourwargames.com/CR3SantaClausWars.pdf

'Chain Reaction 2015' (which I guess is version 3.0?) is also available on the site, you just need to go through a shopping process (so enter whatever contact details you wish):
http://www.twohourwargames.com/free.html

I have everything from Wargames Supply Dump (I built the required terrain this year during the Build Something process) - so I too should get going with this. It's mid November already!

Many thanks - the first link I had already but the second was new to me.

Some more additions

These monsters from my Doctor Who collection have been repainted to become Snawmehn
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/Snawmehn.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/Snawmehn.jpg.html)

Ice Hawks provide scouting and light attacks for Jack Frost's army (e-bay purchase)

Santa's call for help was received by Captain Mulled Wyne and the Walnut on Sea volunteers of the Special Elf Service reported for duty (Hasslefree Frigures)

The field bakery - I found this device in a charity shop and thought "Useful" and SWBO sighed!  It has a spring loaded catapult device on it so it will be a combined bakery and Christmas Pudding hurler.
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7759.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7759.jpg.html)

Santa's transport made from card pulled by toy deer (from Charity shop).

And a hero appeared to reinforce Santa's army - found in the lead mountain!

Santa needs somewhere to live and work - and we need some objectives.

Santa's house is a laser-cut decoration from "The Works" with some painting and the lights switched on (bought after last Christmas for Ģ2)
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7747.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7747.jpg.html)

Santa's Elves living quarters - another laser-cut decoration from "The Works" sale for Ģ2
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7749.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7749.jpg.html)

The Workshop (an igloo type building made by a friend "Bezzo") and the Elves dining room
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7755.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7755.jpg.html)

The North Pole itself and some Ruby Trees (North pole is a stirrer and the ruby trees are cut from a Poundland decoration)
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7771.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7771.jpg.html)

Some ice spires made by Bezzo and some others made by me from assorted decorations
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1/dadlamassu/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7772.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/dadlamassu/media/Christmas%20Game/DSCF7772.jpg.html)

Cute project do you perhaps have more details on those Ice Hawks as I would like to get some to use as statues for my elven army.

Thanks for the kind words.

Sorry I do not remember where I got the Ice Hawks though grandson called then "Ice Eagle" = "Icicles" so they will get a name change.

I am sure that I saw them in a post here on LAF some time ago along with the figure I use as Jack frost and a snow beast and ordered them.  I just cannot find the post or remember where I got them.
