Title: WW2 fun ruleset for a dumb player ?
Post by: sundayhero on February 19, 2015, 04:40:33 PM
Hi,

I'm currently reviewing several WW2 rulesets. I already own NUTS from thw, especially for squad level fight (even if I'm studying the possibility of using of for bigger games).

My goal is to play 15mm (single based) reinforced platoon games (with about 1-2 platoons each side, with a few supports and vehicles), on a 90cmx100cm gaming mat. The board size is important.

I also want a game wich is solo friendly : I mean, perhaps not something as evolved as two hour wargames system, but at least with some kind of unpredictable events, random stuff, blind deployements, etc...

I want a game scenario based only, competitive play is not interesting me.

I also prefer  not IGOUGO games (alternate activations, reactions, etc...) since I like THW system and Force on force, for instance.

Finally, I'm searching for a SIMPLE game, not a simulation or whatever. I want a game wich "feels" right and realistic, but easy in mechanics. No book keeping, no (much) counters, no need to go inside the rulebook for every action, etc...

What would you advise for me ?

thank you for your help.

I recommend Chain of Command by Too Fat Lardies, it's pretty simple and fits most of the rest of your requirements.

If you want to play 1-2 plts per side skirmish on a 3x3 I would look at 6mm scale
Chain  of Command is a great set of rules but is scales perfectly for 15mm at 1 inch = 3.33 yards
Meaning a 6 x 4 table is 240  x 160 yards at 15mm scale

thank you for your detailed answer. It will not fit my needs, then (I already made the choice of 15mm, and my gaming board space is limited).

You could try 'Rapid Fire' and halve all distances etc?
Title: WW2 fun ruleset for a dumb player (I found a new ruleset)

I finally bought "a sergeant's war", from , a new ruleset wich seems to fill most of my needs (small table, game scale, simple to play but not simplistic)  :D

I also bought "no end in sight" a platoon level modern game from the author of 5men in normandy.

As most indie products, they are sold as PDF versions, with a quite basic layout, but it seems to be very well organized, easy to read, and there is pictures, maps and schemes to help too.

The game is still a "big" game (about 110pages), with quite a lot of stuff inside, like 7 army lists with vehicles and guns, from early war to late war, 7 scenarios (and rules to build your own), rules for artillery support and communication, rules for specific terrains (jungle, bocages, urban, etc...) and even come (at least these days) with a free extra Normandy scenario and campaign pack (generic scenarios).

I'm pleasantly surprised so far. I'll add some infos later, when I'll know more about it (for now I just "flied" over it, in the same time I was printing it).

So that what's the rules look like printed... :) (Author of ASW here)

Thanks for the positive comments! Feel free to ask away if you have any questions about the rules.

I figured if I wrote a rules set that was scenario-driven, without point lists, that I sure better make scenarios available for it. :)
