hi everybody,
After showing my Saxons for SAGA and my Mexican gang for Dead Man's Hand, I will present you my medieval army.
Basically, it was a bretonnian army for Warhammer Battle.
But I have tons of old minis from the 80s and the 90s, and they do not really have a fantasy look, mainly due to the work of the Perry brothers.
So I will certainly use lots of those minis for Lion Rampant or Hail Caesar games.
That's why I've decided to post pics in this section instead of the fantasy section.
First, just some minis painted some months ago. Thanks to the Perry brothers for their fantastic minis !
- some foot knights :

- bretonnian sorceress / damsel :

- a knight with some of his men-at-arms. This unit is the one currently on my painting desk (17 MAA done, 12 more to do) :

Stay tunned as I have tons of minis for this collection, both painted (but I still need to update the basing) and to paint.
And I'll certainly add some more minis from historical ranges (Perry and Claymore Castings are really temptings, but some others too...) in the coming months.
And as always, you'll find more pics on my blog...

:-* :-* :-* Eye candy indeed!!!! :-* :-*
-
:o Amazing paintjobs on some lovely miniatures! :-*
I love how clean and crisp your heraldry painting is.
-
I rather like the floral element you used in your flocking. Can I ask what it is?
Cheers,
Fred :)
-
Lovely painting - what a great start to the day.
-
The heraldry is excellent as is the basing and everything else! True eye candy indeed!!!
-
That is some very nice painting and basing! :)
Cheers,
Scott

Great work on some fine miniatures
Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for comments, guys !
XIIht/XVth century armies (and Bretonnia) are my favorite period of history for ages.
And it's a great pleasure for me to paint minis for this period.
I rather like the floral element you used in your flocking. Can I ask what it is?
Cheers,
Fred :)
I use variety of tuft :
- little rocks and grass tufts come from a french online shop (http://www.minisocles-store.fr/ (http://www.minisocles-store.fr/))
- flowers are Silflor and come from a US online shop (http://www.sceneryexpress.com/ (http://www.sceneryexpress.com/))
- and some GF9 "summer clump foliage mix".
I have a little question for you, guys. I have a unit of bretonnian squires to paint and I'm undecided on the color scheme to keep an historical feeling on them (even if I use the GW minis for Robin Hood and his Merry Men).
Just to be clear : the following minis were not painted by me...
Must I paint them in a colorful scheme ?
Or must I paint them in a more neutral/natural color scheme ?
Thanks for help... :D
-
My vote is for the colourfull ones!!!
-
It depends on the scenario/use of the miniatures.
If you have enough you can paint a few as some nobles retainers and others as simple peasants like those for Robin Hoods merry men.
I tend to pick up 3 or 4 diferent nobles and their heraldry and then paint a few retainers on their livery colors.
Medieval armies would be made on this way. Several nobles with their retainers.
-
I think if you were going for militia, they would be more dull. But colorful is definitely more fun. ;)
-
Both sets are beautifully painted. As mentioned by Rumacara above, paint some in bright liveries and some as foresters so they can be used for a multitude of games/scenarios/genres.
-
Very nice painting!
As others have said, for infantry/bowmen you could paint them in liveries by very small groups of two or three (= each of these groups belonging to one of you knights);
or as a single, larger group (town militia, or recruitment by units);
or in neutral colour but historically you wouldn't happen to see many groups of "civilian" bowmen except in very special contexts.
For liveried troops I would suggest to follow the same coulour pattern for hoods as for tunics (as they were probably given two large pieces of coloured cloth to make both), and perhaps have a few different for variety, as you'll always have a guy or two wearing a "civilian" hood in the lot, at least if the campaign lasts some weeks away from their castle or town.
-
I guess I kind of split the difference going with mostly natural/muted colors...but with one contrating/brighter color to bring them to life.

I'm sure whatever you chose to do will look fine...all of your work is an inspiration!

Blue

Tasty! :-* Especially all that heraldry. Very sharp!
-
Lotsa different ways to approach painting your army. Truth is, no matter what suggestions others give, you'll know the look you want when you see it. I went sort of in reverse approach in that my "fantasy" armies always have a historical theme. I love painting liveries and my method is to try to keep my palette somewhat restricted and avoid introducing too many extraneous colors.
Cheers,
Fred

:o Magnificent painting, Bon roi René !
-
Those are seriously impressive-looking figures, Fred! :-*

Some gorgeous paintwork on this thread all round.
:-* :-*
Tancrede: That heraldry is simply amazing.
I thought that it had to be transfers at first it is so clean.

Thanks for comments, guys, it was helpful for me.
I've decided to go for squires in livery clothes (blue and red), and I think it works well (pics soon). Hoods and other clothes wil be painted in some muted colors, just as if it was the personnal clothes of the bowmen...
For the rest of the troops, they are already painted, so I won't repaint them.
Bowmen and lowrank men at arms are painted in muted colors, except some little parts in their lord colors.
Higher men at arms (wich I consider as poor knights) and foot knights are painted with their own heraldry.
For exemple, here are some of my foot knights and men at arms :

Very beautiful minis, Fred.
And as I was born in Angers, I like your nickname ! :D

Nice to see you here, Blue.
I like the way you've done your own Bretonnians.

Astonishing! :o
-
Fred,
It's great to have you on board.... it's been a while! I think the last time I heard from you I was asking about the John of Bedford's Emblem for his standard back in the days of the WABMedieval Yahoo Group!!
I had a sneaky suspicion that it was you when I saw your post in the Medieval Miniatures Painted thread but wasn't sure. V very distinctive and delightful high quality style! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Darrell.

These are stunning!

Been away a bit and can never outrun my enjoyment of the hobby for long. It seems like the WAB scene has cooled considerable in the past few years, however, that is a great segueway for a thread about basing. (Something I've been struggling with for months as I weigh basing for maximum aesthetic value against game system versatility.
Thank's for the kind words. Its good to be back.
Cheers,
Fred :)

Fantastic work. I always side with pretty colours over historical accuracy, unless brown and green blobs merging into one another on the tabletop is something that gets you excited of course.
-

Nice to see you here, Blue.
Thanks, I learned about the old man reading about his grandson Rene II during the Burgundian Wars. Rene I's life story is far too interesting to pass up. I like to think of him as a 15th Century version of "the World's Most Interesting Man". ;)

So, between some wine festival (I'm in Bordeaux, so...) and rugby match, I've found some time this week-end to paint my foot squires...
As said, I've chosen to paint them with a blue and red livery, just as my spearmen.

Those old GW minis are really a pleasure to paint.
Thanks to the Perry brothers !
Now, I must add 2 more to field them for SAGA / Hail Caesar / Lion Rampant games, and a little banner...
-
really really nice figures :-*
-
Very nice. That is a lovely looking army coming along here.
-
Very, very lovely, impressive painting!
-
In blue and red, you can also use them as Paris militia. :)
-
Thanks for comments, guys.
For today, Here are Bertrand and his Merry Men (in french : Bertrand le brigand et les Archers de Bergerac).
I still have to do a banner for them, but I will paint it soon (with the banner of the foot squires).

Stunning work - wish I was near that good :)
-
Some of the best painting I've ever seen :o; just one small question: why is the horned knight in the first photo standing in a hole?
-
Lovely painting! I like the little girl you added to the band of bowmen.
-
superb subtle painting - we need bigger pictures and some close ups! :-* :-*
-
Superbly painted army! :-* :o
-
Bootiful work there! Some of those old sculpts are fantastic to work with, but your paint jobs are top notch! ;D
-
Great work! lovin' it

Indeed - splendid!

Such vibrant and neat heraldry! I love it. :-*
-
A lovely bunch of figures. Great, vibrant colours.
-
Great! The two bowmen look so realistic. Old Warhammer miniatures??
-
Thanks for comments, guys !
Old Warhammer miniatures??
Yes. Some foot squires from the 90s bretonnian range...
As I have started playing King of War, I just want to give some love to my old Brets again (as they have nice lists to field them in KoW). So I made some archeological work in my bitzbox and built me some more knights.
For today, I just have some pics of another knight hero for my bretonnian army. Not very historical, but I like it :

More spearmen to come soon...

:-* :-* :-*
Look at that. Look at that red. Look at those freehand patterns. I don't even...
-
:-* :-*
-
pffft, just too much art instead of plain craft. I will never try... lol
No, those are truly gorgeous!
Cheers

Yes, I have some old minis in this army, especially from the 90s range (imo, the best ever sculpted for the bretonnian range). I have more knights lying in the bitzbox, waiting for their turn, but I'll take some pics of other units soon (as soon as I will have rebased them to fit the new basing).
-
For today, just a little pic of the just finished musician of the knights unit, with his leader...
