Title: 54mm Inquisitor - Painted 54mm Inquisitorial Staff Car
Post by: The_Baron on March 11, 2015, 02:45:13 AM
Greetings,

After a lengthy break from 54mm, I am back madly modelling for 54mm Inquisitor games. Yes I have jumped from 6mm skirmish to 54mm skirmish, and am a scale butterfly! I have cross-posted these models on The Conclave but thought I would put them up here too at the suggestion of James. (note the bases are either unfinished or WIP, and the sepia filter is just to bring the greenstuff/metal together a bit more in the photo).

I haven't had a chance to write background for these guys yet, but I am working on it.

First up, a bound Daemonhost - I posted some WIP pictures of him ages ago. He floats on a grav suspensor (space marine jumpack), his main torso is from an old keeper of secrets (I think), and head from an ogre maneater ninja. He is finished apart from the base. Super happy with how he turned out, this was a very in-depth conversion.

Rear view, showing his vestigial wings. By using guitar wire arranged around a strong brass rod core, I was able to 'float' him without a flight stand
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-26-01-08-26-09.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-26-01-08-26-09.jpg.html)

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-25-01-08-25-31.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-25-01-08-25-31.jpg.html)

Next up is a fairly stock standard gunslinger. While she has appeared on this forum many times, I just couldn't bring myself to cut her up - the pose and sculpting is excellent. My only concession was to bend the arms slightly for a more natural pose, and give her some pouches and ammo built to represent reloads
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-26-01-08-26-58.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-26-01-08-26-58.jpg.html)

This next one was a more involved conversion. Barbaretta body, a Warmachine Jack head (not sure which one), Reaper arm. I am still slightly working out what she represents - any suggestions? The weaponry brings to mind an ex pit-fighter turned bounty hunter, but perhaps I can come up with something else.
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-27-01-08-27-21.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-27-01-08-27-21.jpg.html)

Small buckler and dagger arrangement brings to mind a pit fighter
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-27-01-08-27-47.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-27-01-08-27-47.jpg.html)

And a really cool shotgun hanging from a belt
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-28-01-08-28-11.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-28-01-08-28-11.jpg.html)

This next guy is interesting - I believe maybe a Warzone model, he is too big for 28mm, and small for 54mm. I think he makes a great creepy mutant medicae, with his tools on his belt and mutated hand. The head sculpt is pretty poxy, I think I will give him a rebreather...
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.51.34.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.51.34.jpg.html)

A beastman mutant, Ogre Butcher given an increase in height with a GS belt. Not quite finished, he will need a knife on his belt, and a cool speargun on his back
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.50.28.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.50.28.jpg.html)

This conversion came together really naturally. An Inquisitrix with radical leanings (but not quite crossed over yet), she sports a wicked chain sword and a power fist. I have a matching other power fist, I think this will be given to another inquisitor and be central to the background....
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.52.42.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.52.42.jpg.html)

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.53.45.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.53.45.jpg.html)

And a group shot so far for scale
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.54.59.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-08%2018.54.59.jpg.html)

Paint schemes will be 'Blanchian' in nature, with lots of inks, sepia and splatters. The models may be in need of a few more greeblies on them, but equally I don't want to clutter them too much. My aim is to have a number of playable factions, in order to rope some old Necromunda players into some games.

Many more on the way, what do you think?

Cheers The_Baron

Some lovely conversions, and a 'Blanchian' paint scheme will suit.

You've at least got me to guiltily think about my unassembled guys.

Thanks guys! Fun scale to work with, good fun sitting around with a bunch of bits and blutack to see what goes together well.

Von Lucky, I see you live in Melbourne too, get some stuck together and we can have a game!

Lovely work. Your conversion-fu is impressive, esp in the larger scale. Looking forward to color on 'em.

Great conversions.
 8) 8)

I dabbled in a few myself when Inq first came out.
You should take a look at 54mm scale historical models for parts as the 40k universe is so weird and varied that even Napoleonic uniforms seem to work really well.

Thanks!

Yes definitely going to raid some historicals, rather tempted by the Victrix hard-plastic 54mm,  would make killer imperial guard (either the french or British) and easy to convert too as hard plastic.

Another Update!

And here is my next conversion. My radical inquisitor who has very clearly crossed the line, much like Quixos. He is clearly going to be a big bad in the campaign - power armour, daemon sword and power fist. Also a bolt pistol mag-locked to his armour. He is going to need less twisted minions to do his bidding without raising so much attention.

On to the conversion - sergeant stone's head takes on a new level of creepy, looks like Sam Neil in event horizon. Back storey will reflect this, experiments with the Mechanicus for faster warp travel. This ended... poorly.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.42.35.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.42.35.jpg.html)

I need to add an Armour plate over the hydraulic part to bulk it up a bit. Looks a little weedy at the moment. My Inquisitrix has the matching power fist, a relic of the Horus Heresy. This will be a point of contention between them.
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.43.36.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.43.36.jpg.html)

The pistol has a clip modelled on attached to the leg - it didn't suit him at the waist, here it is within reach. Still looks like it is floating, so may need to define this further.
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.46.22.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-20%2021.46.22.jpg.html)

More to come soon.

Thanks pocoloco  :D
Hmm that's a good question... The rough plan at the moment is to have a radical, middle of the road and firebrand Ordo Malleus, and associated retinues,  as well as an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor and Rogue Trader. And a space marine. And a Tau.... But no hard and fast plans, it really is the models which are driving this project, and the freedom to be creative!

Another model completed, a hard as nails Ordo Malleus Inquisitor. Once again power Armour and fist and sword mean he really is only a 'boss' character.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_181700.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_181700.jpg.html)

This is a Hitech Minis 54mm Exorcist model. He comes on an integral base, which has him stepping on some kind of servitor and book - nice enough, but not matching my other bases. It is also too tall, and the sides of the base are ROUGH. Like the sculptor sloppily schmudged some leftover green stuff on there at the last minute. Strange as the rest is so crisp. Anyway, after much careful cutting with a junior hacksaw, I removed him with only minor damage and made a new base.

I have been eyeing those HiTech minis from time to time, now you might have given me a reason to get few of those at some point :)

Tau in 54mm sounds intriguing, any source for minis in mind yet?

These conversions are so full of character.

Another useful source of parts could be the old demon princes that GW made some time ago.
You should be able to pick them up fairly cheap on ebay.

I suggest you Google Alien Commander 2.0 54mm  ;)

If you scroll up a little Mason,  the radical inquisitor does in fact use the legs and torso from an old demon prince - with a bit of greenstuff at the waist for height!

Hoping to get some paint on these guys soon, but maybe a few more WIP first. And a question for you too ( cross posted from the conclave )

Picked this guy up
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184050.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184050.jpg.html)

This is a Ral Partha museum scale troll model.
Here is a scale shot with my Inquisitor
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184205.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184205.jpg.html)

And a ruler
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184507.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184507.jpg.html)

So he is roughly 75mm ish tall.

And a shot of his face
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184111.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_184111.jpg.html)

Ok so the question is, to Ork or to Ogryn?
His race could go either way with minor sculpting (horns removed from back of head).
Size wise he could fit either, perhaps a touch big for a normal Ork but fine for a Nob.
Equipment he could be either, spread hand is a bit goofy and needs to be holding something. Equipment and clothing is humanish, but if he is an Ork he will be a Blood Axe. Putting aside fluff going against using an Ork  . Inquisitor (which can be explained, particulary for where my games will be operating).

And a last delightful shot of the box art, some nice fashion on this guy lol
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_183112.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150324_183112.jpg.html)

So, what do you guys think?

Cheers The Baron

Ogryn.

I know you're an RT and 2nd Ed fan like me Baron, and the orks used to be all hunched over and shorter than Marines, so the Troll is just too big and straight to be one. As an Ogryn, the conversion will be more straightforward and have a better final look IMHO.

Yep Ogryn it is. He is pretty much perfect already with some minor conversion. Don't think I posted these clear pics before of some of the completed conversions

Daemonhost,  radical inquisitor, beastman
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163156_1.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163156_1.jpg.html)

And Arbites Death Cultist, Inquisitrix, gunslinger and mutant medicae
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163218_1.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163218_1.jpg.html)

And a cross post from the clave, wip painting on the beast man.  Metal needs to be re highlighted after some extensive weathering, then some highlights on the skin I think. Skulls and trinkets not painted at all yet. Doll needs hair done
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-02%2023.07.55.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-02%2023.07.55.jpg.html)

Shot from the back showing his harpoon gun. Going to add lots of checks and color here as it is a bit dull at the moment. Arm is screaming for a tattoo too.

Greetings,

(cross post from the clave) I have been painting some more, but nothing too interesting to show yet. Felt the need to do some more converting (helped by a massive box arriving from Reaper), so started on this guy.

He is an ex-Elysian Drop Trooper, and now pulls security for Inquisitor Tannen (the giant chap in the power armour). A no-nonsense military type, I wanted to keep the professional look that the Elysian's have and not go too grim-dark. Tannen himself will be a Puritan, and I imagine most of his warband will fit a similar mould.

The conversion is based on the Reaper Master Series US soldier, which despite an unflattering online paintjob (really just the eyes actually), is actually a really nicely sculpted model. His harness is very well detailed with lots of straps, packs, combat knives and the like.
Despite this, he needed some 40kification, so I have done some minor greenstuff work.

Here he is with the padded armour plates sculpted. Note I have gone with big bulky carapace shoulder plates to increase his prescence. These are just blutacked in place here so sit a little high.

And with his lasgun. It looks a bit big for him, but I will add a scope and call it a Long-Las
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-10-10-01-10-32.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/Photo%20-%2002015-10-10-01-10-32.jpg.html)

He will be holding it from a tactical foregrip, so I imagine he can switch between a sniper and assaulter at a moment's notice. More soon.

Cheers,
The Baron

Greetings,
Next model completed! Jade Tarth, ex-Adeptus Arbites officer, sent to the Pit-Fights for her part in a secret society who dispensed off-the-books vigilante justice to the Imperial nobility.  Conversion using a Barbaretta model, with a warmachine cog head and arm from a Reaper master series model

Post by: The_Baron on October 04, 2015, 05:31:39 AM
Hi all,

I have been on and off with the 54mm models, but have just completed one of my favourite Dan Abnett characters.

I present to you Inquisitor Ravenor!

He can be incognito....
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/c33d3b13-a54e-4903-b87c-934d095ca97f.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/c33d3b13-a54e-4903-b87c-934d095ca97f.jpg.html)

Or be in all-out action mode, and display his Inquisitorial Rosette, with his dual Psycannons deployed from his armoured chair...
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/ae963701-b62c-42d9-8ba7-b23b8a6d6e2d.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/ae963701-b62c-42d9-8ba7-b23b8a6d6e2d.jpg.html)

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/1770650b-246c-40f9-b3e2-2aa1207c8211.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1770650b-246c-40f9-b3e2-2aa1207c8211.jpg.html)

He presents a rather large challenge to model - an emotionless armoured chair with few distinguishing external features. But he is such a rich character that I decided to model inside his chair too - it won't be seen often, but for me it adds a lot as you know he is in there, rather than the model just being an empty shell

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/6a696288-ae78-494c-affe-d777006050a9.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/6a696288-ae78-494c-affe-d777006050a9.jpg.html)

While Dan doesn't go into huge detail on what he looks like, we do know that he was burnt and very nearly killed, and the chair, and his willpower are the only things keeping him alive.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/4878852b-4e2c-4ee6-bdeb-b438d1851573.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/4878852b-4e2c-4ee6-bdeb-b438d1851573.jpg.html)

I tried to add lots of gubbins on the inside for the illusion of life support systems.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/ac1e2144-e3b3-44e1-a849-d47c071d970b.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/ac1e2144-e3b3-44e1-a849-d47c071d970b.jpg.html)

And a couple of action shots
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/1c9c1b88-e7bf-44c0-8fbd-86b9f3eda307.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1c9c1b88-e7bf-44c0-8fbd-86b9f3eda307.jpg.html)

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/19b0c1f7-d56d-47b9-999b-b34cb65f2e61.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/19b0c1f7-d56d-47b9-999b-b34cb65f2e61.jpg.html)

He would obviously dominate on the tabletop, so could only really be used when the 'big bad' of an Inquisitor campaign shows up. A fun and unusual project, I really enjoyed making him, hope you like him :)

Cheers, The Baron

This next one was a more involved conversion. Barbaretta body, a Warmachine Jack head (not sure which one), Reaper arm. I am still slightly working out what she represents - any suggestions? The weaponry brings to mind an ex pit-fighter turned bounty hunter, but perhaps I can come up with something else.

Thanks Noigrim! Yep that's the background I am thinking of - Adeptus Arbites vigilante death cult, taking the law into their own hands when Imperial Law lets them down. She is caught and sent to the Pits for punishment, before eventually ending up in the employ of an inquisitor.

That Ravenor armored chair is brilliant. Made my morning. Thanks.

Phenomenal effort.

Thanks chaps :) Haven't really seen much of him in miniature form, and certainly not in 54mm! Bit out of left field but good fun!
I'm going to have to come up a really bad 'big bad', so I can get him onto the table... thinking Daemon Prince. Have a giant chunk of lead I picked up at a bring and buy exactly for this purpose.

I love the overall 'feel' of this project, it really conveys the original, Gothic, grimdark look of the early illustrations used for the background, both in the Inquisitor book and earlier in the RT era.
All very sinister.
Even the 'good' guys.

I love the Inquisitor artwork from the rulebook, it really fired my imagination when it first came out - and still does to this day. You should all have a try yourself if you happen across any random 54mm or 1/32 models, it really is liberating to work in this scale, and pushes your modelling and painting skills.

I just revisited this thread as I am looking at how I might represent Ravenor on the table, having been reading the last in a trilogy featuring him, and vaguely remembered there being just such a representation here...and wow, what a truly inspired piece it is! It goes way beyond anything I had in mind ie the interior but it is a real show stopper so why not!

My 54mm SF endeavours are spread across the genres; I have started with Star wars as there are basic figures available which can be used with minimal conversion, but it is my intention to  include Inquisitor and a Retinue, and some Chaos creatures too. Oddly enough I have done a retinue but in 1/18th scale ie 3 3/4 inch/95mm figures!

Perhaps I will start a new thread on our (Skirmish Wargamers Collective) efforts in SF.

Thanks Mike for your kind comments. I love the Eisenhorn and Ravenor books, hands down some of my favourite 40k, and even overall books. I have a few of the Star Wars command models, they make an ok base for Inquisitor models - particularly if you swap out the obvious 'stormtrooper' type heads.

Would love to see a new thread, particularly of some 95mm models - how cool!

Cross post from the Conclave, but seeing as I haven't seen any photos at all 'in the wild' of the Kromlech 54mm Kaptin Orc, and no reviews...

Well when this guy, Kaptin Orc came up for a deal from Kromlech I couldn't resist. I present to you my 54mm Ork Kommando ready to be painted.

As I haven't found any kit photos online here is how he comes. Main problem from our gaming point of view is the left hand is part of the brick wall. It's a cool pose but not really practical for a gaming piece.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20170130_221657.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170130_221657.jpg.html)

Lovely crisp detail.

OK so after some very very careful cutting with a jewellers saw I was able to remove the hand from the wall, but a bit of damage occurred.

Scratch built a slugga and choppa

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20170204_225156.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170204_225156.jpg.html)

And then resculpted the hand

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20170218_151800.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170218_151800.jpg.html)

And here is the result. A cool model with a big presence. He is not massive, I'd say normal Ork Boy sized, but that suits my plans well.

Looks a bit like Captain America so my first thought would be to copy that characters colour scheme.

Cheers guys

Well spotted! I think that may have been a bit of inspiration from the sculptor - here is the model without conversions...

I won't be going that route as I want it to be a bit more serious. I did consider switching out the shield but it was too nice to ditch.
As he is in a body suit there really isn't much skin there, am maybe thinking camo pants and a plain top. More kommando like

Well I'd still want to follow the superhero trope and have an outlandish colour scheme. Purple works well with green.

It's up to you though!

Looking forward to this.  I have a few Inquisitor models, but I don't have the courage for 54mm right now.  Too rusty.

Quick and nasty 54mm scale Inquisitorial staff car. Made from a $1.25 op-shop toy.

Beginning with this

And little conversion (cover windows, plastic sheeting on roof and hood, a few imperial eagles)

And done!

I like the details on the car - the little Epic Rough Rider on the bonnet is inspired! :)
