Hi,
today (and over the following days) I want to show you how I've built a scene with some buildings from the Edo period.
If the subject reminds you of something - a movie maybe - you are absolutely right. And here is the miniature it all startet with:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12244_zpse3uaero8.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12244_zpse3uaero8.jpg.html)
It's another miniauture from the Kensei series...let's call him Bodyguard ;)
So this was the scene I had in mind:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12132_zpsd735abe1.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12132_zpsd735abe1.jpg.html)
And I got help from a company named Kawai Shokai - they made plastic kits in 1/60.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12103_zpsfa37338d.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12103_zpsfa37338d.jpg.html)
As you can see, the scale is a Little too tiny for 25/28mm figures, that is why I took some elements from These kits and not the complete sets.
Today I want to show you how I mad the Jishinban (watch house). Among others the hompeage from 3dchaya has a 3d-model from this building as pdfs for free download:
http://3dchaya.com/views/content/us/contents/page01_03.html
So I printed side and front view, scaled it up as needed and made a model out of card board and blackened it with edding.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12135_zps205fc40a.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12135_zps205fc40a.jpg.html)
Then I glued some wooden strips on this (walnut and balsa wood); I made irregular cuts to the edges of the strips, to give them a more organic look; the Balsa Wood was treated with a brass brush
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12137_zpsf3f494bd.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12137_zpsf3f494bd.jpg.html)
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12138_zps075e5bc8.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12138_zps075e5bc8.jpg.html)
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12140_zps2dc71800.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12140_zps2dc71800.jpg.html)
changing the roof into a Wood layout, giving it some brown colour and adding the ladder for the fire alert
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12152_zps211f0e87.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12152_zps211f0e87.jpg.html)
I put this buidling aside for further weathering and attended to the eel shop, which is next to come.
-
:o
Brilliant so far!
:-*
I look forward to seeing this progress.
-
Very good :)
cheers
James
-
Thanks Mason and James! :)
Here we go for the second building - it's the local Unagi-ya; the eel shop.
Again I started with model from Card board - the used red type is not the best...you will get Problems when painting white over it :(
On the left you can see my inital plan and on the right side the final version. It's a Little smaller to fit the Roof I took from a plastic kit.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12158_zps667c4738.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12158_zps667c4738.jpg.html)
After adding some wood strips, I painted the remaining wall with a very light grey and the roof with a bluish grey. As you can see there are some more parts to be added later.
Aside from some platic Roof for the front I built an additinal window frame.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12160_zps258fe036.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12160_zps258fe036.jpg.html)
Then I gave the buidling some used look drybrushing it with a light ochre.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12185_zpsaebcbac7.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12185_zpsaebcbac7.jpg.html)
I also added the sign, so everybody will now know about the shop. Next to the shop a giant empty bucket was set - former home of the unagi.
Again I used some black pigments for further aging.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12229_zps34074d58.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12229_zps34074d58.jpg.html)
The Background Shows the next building to come - the local inn.
Until then - cheers
Andreas

Very nice building and painting. Sets the mood effectively.
-
:o
Ohh, these look very nice!
-
I'm enjoying the build up. :D
-
Wow, look forward to see more :o :o :o
-
Great work and very inspiring (I'm working on a japanese village too right now)
-
Lovely.
You have managed a nice, aged look to that place without making it look scruffy.
:-*
And that bucket is great.
I must source a great big wash tub for my own laundry soon.

Looks great! Straight out of the last few Samurai movies I've seen. :)
-
This is looking wonderful! :-) Great buildings, nicely understated finish...
-
Thank you very much for your comments guys, very motivating! Domo arigato!
So today I can you Show you the local inn.
Basically the same method - cardboard with Wood strips.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12163_zpsf8e12318.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12163_zpsf8e12318.jpg.html)
The window frame was built using 3 stripes as place holders.
The inn has a very low entrance and a panoramic window...of course it now is closed.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12166_zps0b3e9bdd.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12166_zps0b3e9bdd.jpg.html)
I used abachi-wood for the roof, which I cut into stripes and treated with a cutter knife and a brass brush
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12170_zpsf0c82afd.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12170_zpsf0c82afd.jpg.html)
I added broken walnut stripes on the lower side of the house
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12172_zpsdc28fc75.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12172_zpsdc28fc75.jpg.html)
Basic colour - clean yet:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12174_zps6322a9b8.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12174_zps6322a9b8.jpg.html)
after aging (using thinned ivory colour, drybrushing ochre and black pigments) we get this:(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12183_zps5767ed73.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12183_zps5767ed73.jpg.html)
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12184_zps5e94a6e9.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12184_zps5e94a6e9.jpg.html)
Adding some detail as a fallen sign, stones on the Roof secured by small wood planks gives the finishing touch.
So - the first halve of the abandoned edo village street is finished:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12258_zpsanz0ze5v.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12258_zpsanz0ze5v.jpg.html)
-
Sexy is the word I'm thinking of. Extremely sexy.
-
Wow!
-
very nice indeed
-
Thank you, Lucky, pws and skip!
I'll try to stay that sexy with the next building ;)
The last building in the Scene is the biggest, most complicated and will dominate the scene - the sake brewery.
Again I started from a cardboard model based on a Theater house from Kawai Shokai. As you can see in the upper right, the Roof taken from this set was not deep enough:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12161_zpsa9b19a5f.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12161_zpsa9b19a5f.jpg.html)
So I used some Oyumaru for moulding:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12167_zps42e2b10a.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12167_zps42e2b10a.jpg.html)
Filling it with Magic sculp resulted in a useful part:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12178_zps9414f8e8.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12178_zps9414f8e8.jpg.html)
Adding some liquid green stuff to hide the border between the parts resulted in this:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12179_zpsd202e39a.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12179_zpsd202e39a.jpg.html)
This time I used plastic Sheets on which all details were glued (grids are replica from the model using oyumaru):
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12193_zps99fe97fd.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12193_zps99fe97fd.jpg.html)
Everything assembeld:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12194_zps5c8a3a26.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12194_zps5c8a3a26.jpg.html)
Aging with the usual technics (light grey, thinned ivory, drybrushing ochre, black pigments):
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12196_zpsb9a6d2c4.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12196_zpsb9a6d2c4.jpg.html)
Finally I added some details. The small Roof in front of the building is typical for a sake brewery; they fixed a ball from fresh pine leaves when sake was fresh prepared - while the sake got older and better, the colour of the pine ball (Sakabayashi) changed from green to brown...currently there is no sake production running - so no pine ball :(
Unfortunately my Kanji skill is not the best...on the left it should read Tokuemon (Name of the owner of the sake brewery) and the right says sake brewery...
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12226_zps19dd4f71.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12226_zps19dd4f71.jpg.html)
So here is the second part of the street:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12259_zps6kt9pyhf.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12259_zps6kt9pyhf.jpg.html)
Next to come is the completed scene with all actors.
-
This is a lovely looking project
-
Great work, this will be a great piece when finished. But will you be happy with just this piece or build more? :)
-
Many thanks :)
Great work, this will be a great piece when finished. But will you be happy with just this piece or build more? :)
I'm not sure what you exactly mean.
There will be no more buidlings to come in this Scene, as it is a closed diorama showing a duel in a street. And it is a kind of standalone diorama, not part of a bigger scene showing more of this village.
In that aspect I am happy with just this piece.
But this diorama is the second part of a duel series I made. So I am rather sure that I will build more - even if the future projects may have no linkage to this scene.
Cheers Andreas
-
Hi Andreas,
just wondering if you were going to expand the scene besides this street duel setting.
It will a lovely diorama for sure but you should make a whole village next :)
-
Lovely work....very evocative....and very inspirational
-
Hi guys,
I finshed the dio and here is the whole story:
A Ronin was wandering the country and finally happend to come to a small town. At first sight it seemed completely abandoned.
The only living creature he crossed was a dog with his special loot:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8841_small_zpsylymeiuy.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8841_small_zpsylymeiuy.jpg.html)
Followed by the sound of a bamboo flute, a wandering monk suddenly stepped out of the shadows.
As the wind blew through the cape of the komuso, a metal claw became visible - a disguised assassin!
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8835_small_zpsrddu5bny.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8835_small_zpsrddu5bny.jpg.html)
Sensing the bloodthirstiness in the air, the Ronin drew his Katana awaiting the battle.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8830_small_zpsdcyjo36w.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8830_small_zpsdcyjo36w.jpg.html)
As time seems to stop, both combatants are facing each other the emty streets...
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12261_zpsvbmw8tal.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12261_zpsvbmw8tal.jpg.html)
But if anyone would take a closer look, he might see the shadowy figure in the sake brewery.
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8833_small_zpsijl07cdg.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8833_small_zpsijl07cdg.jpg.html)
Maybe a poor soul, hoping not to get in trouble...
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8846_small_zpswiawonml.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8846_small_zpswiawonml.jpg.html)
or maybe the one who paid the assassin?
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8849_small_zpshbcn6qic.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8849_small_zpshbcn6qic.jpg.html)
So here is the whole scene:
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12317_zps63qdvo7l.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12317_zps63qdvo7l.jpg.html)
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/SDC12316_zpsptkznihi.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/SDC12316_zpsptkznihi.jpg.html)
(http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/ag159/andreas163/Duel2/IMG_8829_small_zpsozyequ9x.jpg) (http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/andreas163/media/Duel2/IMG_8829_small_zpsozyequ9x.jpg.html)
Obviously a for an upcoming movie - as the Blue Screen technique is used :)
Cheers Andreas
