Title: 28mm Historical sculpts
Post by: TAX on March 24, 2015, 11:52:47 AM
Hello
I'm a war gamer from Sweden and is a new member on this forum. I've been watching and reading for a long time but never posted anything of my own work.

Well now I thought I should change that..
Lately I've been trying to learn how to sculpt miniatures. I have only done seven sculpts so I'm still trying to figure it out. Enough with the talking here are some pictures of number 5,6,7.
They are supposed to be Swedish farmer militia from about 1600th century, who were called "allmogen".

Hello! :)

And blimey, if that's your results after seven sculpts, I'm dead jealous.

Very nice and "natural" looking, would sit nicely alongside Perry minis I should think. Practice your mail a little bit maybe, it's pretty paintable as is already though. Is that "brown stuff" for the main sculpting? What material did you use for the weapons?

Hello again

Thanks everybody for your comments! I really appreciate them.

Very nice and "natural" looking, would sit nicely alongside Perry minis I should think. Practice your mail a little bit maybe, it's pretty paintable as is already though. Is that "brown stuff" for the main sculpting? What material did you use for the weapons?

Thanks for comparing me with the perrys :), I think I'm not holding their standard yet, but I think they are some the best sculptors. They are really superb at doing realistic and natural looking poses.
Here is a comparison picture with some perry wotr figures:

(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/030_zpstkcwbsbz.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/030_zpstkcwbsbz.jpg.html)

I've been trying some different putty's and the brown one is from privateer press, I don't know if it's the one people refer to as "brown stuff" but I like it, easy to sculpt with and becomes very hard when dry, but it's sometime hard to see details because of the color.
The polearm on the running figure is a perry halberd that I shaped to a spear and adding some putty to and the standard is also from perry miniatures, the axe is steelwire with a sculpted head.

I thought I will show some pictures of earlier and present work.

This is nr.2, an attempt to sculpt a Thracian peltast, his arms and hands became very oversized, but you can't see that in this picture  ;)
 (http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/systemkamera20429_zpsyrqf2jms.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/systemkamera20429_zpsyrqf2jms.jpg.html)

Nr3 is also a peltast, starting to get a hand on this, though his face and clothes are not good. He is also about 32mm..

(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/systemkamera20428_zpshgc5pz6t.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/systemkamera20428_zpshgc5pz6t.jpg.html)

this is the fourth one, a thureophoroi. I was pretty satisfied with this one, but he also became a bit to big..

More wip pictures of current works to come!

The Privateer Press website (http://privateerpress.com/content/formula-p3-brownaluminum-putty) calls it 'brown/aluminium' (brown stuff's official name was* brown/aluminium, then brown/neutral), and your photos and PP's look very similar, so... yeah. :)

* Unfortunately I say 'was' because, to warn you against getting too attached to it: it's practically discontinued. These days it's only supplied as special orders that are too much for most small hobby suppliers. It looks like they haven't had any bites yet - it's not available anywhere, as far as I know.

Your latest pics are looking great, anyway. :) Looks like you've got a decent grasp of anatomy and cloth, right off the bat. And I also know too well the problem of sculpts growing a little too much!

Thanks!

Well I been drawing models for some years, so I have a decent knowledge of anatomy, But It one thing to draw on a paper and much more difficult i 3D i realized...

To bad about the Brown stuff I kind of liked it, on my latest sculpts I only used it for armour and weapons, because I think it's god at holding sharp egdes, and you can file it.

Aha! :D

I don't think you're having much trouble with the learning curve of sculpting, though. I think having a good idea of form helps a lot.

Procreate was marketed as a replacement to green stuff and brown stuff when it appeared, though I don't think it quite  matches the abilities of brown stuff. One thing that others do is to use one of the many clay-like putties, which cure quite hard and are even better for edges and filing; either on their own, or to modify the properties of green stuff or procreate towards something like brown stuff, or further. Stuff like milliput, magic sculp, apoxie sculpt and other Aves putties, asculpt, etc. Depends on your preferences, though.

Thanks for all comments and feedback!

@ vermis: thanks for the tip, I vill try that when I'm running out of brown stuff!

Here is a picture of one of three sculpts I'm doing at the moment. It's a hellenistic general. He is supposed to lean his left arm on the hip and hold a sword in the right when he's finished. His feets looks very big on the picture, perhaps I correct that if They still look big when he have the hole body..
I'm not sure if he should be bareheaded, helmet or have a kausia ( a macedonian hat).
Suggestions?

That is some excellent sculpting.  I like the look of the Macedonian general - perhaps bareheaded carrying a helmet?

Thanks for the answers, sorry I'm always curious about these things. I see the heads are a bit bigger that the Perry's but well within good wargaming figure proportions!

The thureophoroi is the best so far, lovely cloth. The general's feet need to be redone but the rest is tasty! I still struggle with feet after a few years sculpting....

I left a comment on another thread about putties...will go dig it out.

Edit:

I use "Uro" polymer clay for almost all if my sculpting but I find Procreate very useful for building up quick and solid armatures.

A few tips, one option is mix a little milliput into it to help give a more "clay like" or less rubbery feel. Up to 5% will into the mix will give you a nice all round putty, more will soften it too much for my liking but extend your work time plus give you an extremely strong figure. Personally I only do this for strength (or if it's something needed sanding/filing) as I dislike the mess on my fingers and tools from milliput but it's quite nice to work with nonetheless (if you're curious I use a mix of milliput black and superfine white to keep everything tonally similar and grey).
The other option is to add a little polymer clay (sculpy, Fimo, etc). It gives it that nice clay feel to a degree and extrends the work time. If you intend to put the sculpt in a vulcanising mould then don't add more than 5-10% as it weakens the material. If it's a one off or for resin casting the go up to 50% and it should stay solid once cured. You won't need to bake it, the epoxy reaction will be enough to harden the sculpt.

Also, talking of ovens...if you've got space it's worth investing a small amount of money in a halogen oven. Mine cost about £25 and sits in my studio curing epoxy on "thaw" and cooking polymer clay on 120 all day every day.

On the Allmoge, you may find a lot of interest from members of a Stocholm club. If you search out Dalauppror on here, you'll see what I mean ;)

The sculpts look excellent so far. Detail and anatomy is quite realistic and remind me more of well detailed 1/72's than exaggerated 28's - you're doing a great job.

For your Macedonian General -how about a kausia with a fillet, making him a king? I don't think I've every seen a command figure like that.

You've got real talent.

Hello everybody!

Sorry for not posted here for some time, spring has come to Sweden with gardenwork taking up all my free time.

On the Allmoge, you may find a lot of interest from members of a Stocholm club. If you search out Dalauppror on here, you'll see what I mean ;)
Actually me and Mr. Dalauppror are both members of the same gaming club! He is the medieval Swedish guru, so he's given me lots of feedback.

Here are some pictures of yet another Allmoge soldier, personally I think he's the best miniature I sculpted this far. The problem with this one is that he is to small, more like the old 25mm than 28mm.. It's dam hard to keep the correct size.

(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/CSC_0011_zps4sx6zmd7.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/CSC_0011_zps4sx6zmd7.jpg.html)

This is my solution to keeping size and also speed up the sculpting, a dummy. I notice that I'm not the only one on LAF coming to this solution.
Perhaps he's a bit to "chunky".

The Macedonian general isn't finished yet, resculpted the poses of his arms a couple of times, but I think I got them now. Cloak, head, left arm and sword are not yet finished.

There hasn't been much sculpting lately, but I have at least done three dummies that I also have done a mould of. I've tested two variants of arms as you perhaps noticed. I'm going to test which will work best.

I can also give you a preview of what I'm sculpting at the moment.

It's a mounted thureophoroi, actually I'm doing two of them but only have one on picture..
I haven't seen any miniature company doing them so I thought it was up to me  :)

Better photos when they are finished.

A new head, a shield and some minor corrections since the vip picture.

Hello!

Here is a newly completed sculp. It's a Swedish/ Finnish dismounted dragoon about 1630 something, clad for a cold Winter. The carbine is borrowed from a warlord cavalry sprue. Pretty satisfied with him but there are some part that annoying me, his left arm is to long and his face is to flat/fat... I keep convincing myself that the next green will be perfect..

Those are amazing!  :o
Such fine detail for such small miniatures. No way I could do something like that.
You should seriously consider casting them, I think plenty of people would want them!

For the moment there's no plans of getting them cast. But you never knows, I feel that I'm still in the learning phase and isn't there yet.

And here is my take on Philip V ruler of Macedonia. I haven't seen a miniature of him with the horned helmet he's wearing on some coins so I thought it was time for that. The last picture is together with my pyrrhos green and a reference sculpt by Steve Saleh.

You become better in Sculpting with each Miniature I see from you! Your faces still look a bit "flat". The overall convex form of the face isn`t there yet, but I know about the mess with the sticky, bouncing GreenStuff and the Fight to get it in the shape you want it. The Eyes should be a littlebit more in the middle of the face but thats fine tuning! Overall the Miniature looks really fine. But one little suggestion in the end ! The horse is absolutly too small, even for an Arab! No King would ride on a Pony into Battle.

Thanks, it's always nice to hear some constructive feedback. The heads is still my big achilles heel and your'e right about that the eyes tend to be placed on the upper half of the head.
The heads also tends to be to big.
The horse is there because it was the only ancient horse I had..

Kind regards

Little Advice for the head problem. To avoid to make mistakes in the basic shaping or size of a head make a standard! Once upon a time far far away 12 years ago I´ve sculpted ONE Masterheadshape to predefine the size and Basicshape. After it was finished and cured I´ve made a pressmold with Magic Sculp and Vaseline. Magic Sculp is perfect for that, because its very soft in the beginning and ended up Rockhard. In the way I did it you can use the not finished used amounts of putty that are not yet hard, but to less sticky to further work with it. Weting you mold, put the Putty in press the two halfes together and then push a Toothpick or Kebabstick through the hole in the Bottom. That presses the Putty perfect in the mold and stick to the Kebabstick. Take it out and let it cure. Its the perfect Base to work on and you have never ever leavings of unused Putty to throw away.

I've resculpted some of my old greens that I wasn't satisfied with.
With this one I wasn't happy with his arms, that did hold a sword, so I gave him an umbrella...
(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/DSC_0087_zpsa6twrxq0.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/DSC_0087_zpsa6twrxq0.jpg.html)

With this one I have resculpted his left arm which was to long. He also got a carbine (he had a warlord plastic one before), spurs and a bandolier.

More pictures of new sculpts to come.

Nice work and not easy to satisfy everyone  :)

My only 'request' would to have separate weapons such as spears, javelins, lances and a closed hand that can be drilled for the weapon.

keep up the good work.

Currently I'm working on a Swedish 30YW army and wanted to have the Swedish general Lennart Torstensson as my CinC. But couldn't find a suitable miniature for him, so I decided to sculpt him myself:

(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/DSC_0110_zpszg5bn3gh.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/DSC_0110_zpszg5bn3gh.jpg.html)

(http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac169/tompaeken/DSC_0121_zpsbd0615ys.jpg) (http://s896.photobucket.com/user/tompaeken/media/DSC_0121_zpsbd0615ys.jpg.html)

I read that he was tormented by gout and had a hard time riding the horse so he was often seen carried in a palanquin. So I decided to sculpt him in that way.

Those are excellent!

Torstensson is great but I'd really like to see Philip in production as I am about to commence fighting the Macedonian wars with Rome.
